I'm also used to the safety net of blues where it takes a lot more for presses to register so I am making a lot of typos hitting nearby keys, but I am already getting used to that. However, my typing does seem to be a bit faster already since I can type super light with it still registering.
The quality of the keyboard itself is quite impressive. No squeaky keys, which was a big issue on my old Rosewill (the spacebar drove me nuts!). It feels quite sturdy. I like that it just has a regular cord rather than one of those braided things because those always get so frayed after a while. The red LEDs are nice because they don't blind me to look into (the blue LEDs in my Rosewill were super duper bright and it could get annoying). Overall I am very happy with this purchase and am glad I went with the Filco.
Edit: I don't know why, but for some reason I am much better at touch typing on this keyboard, almost as fast as on my laptop. It is strange. It may be the layout and the shape of the keys that is affecting your sense for touch typing. At least in my experience that has been the correlation. I always have to look at my laptop's keyboard when I use FX keys; X being an integer.

In the case of my laptop keyboard (which is just a regular ol' Mac chiclet keyboard) and my "fullsized" desktop keyboards that is certainly the case (combined with me typing all my notes at school so I can basically type anything blind on my laptop now). Between my desktop keyboards though I think it might be related to the switches. I probably don't actually type faster on reds, I just make fewer mistakes so it feels faster. My biggest problem I used to have when typing with blues was that I would be typing so fast that I would sometimes miss letters because I was typing fast and just counting on it to register when it sometimes wouldn't. With reds it is so much easier for a key press to register that I seldom miss any letters anymore and end up making way fewer mistakes.

Hey guys, so I mentioned earlier that I got a Filco Majestouch 2 and I really love it.
Now, I`m thinking of getting a mechanical keyboard for my work office (Im a programmer). But obviously I dont want to spent a lot of money again, so I`m looking for a cheaper Mech Keyboard.
Something like the CM Storm QuickFire Rapid. It would be nice because it`s compact and easy to travel with if I need to.
Recently, NASL put out a coupon code to get 30% off the CM store, but unfortunately it doesn`t apply when shipping to Canada
I think Amazon has it for 74$, but i think those are Blue switches, and I share my office with other people so the Blues will definitely be annoying for them. Does anyone know where I can find Browns (any keyboard i guess) for not too expensive?
I really liked that the CM Storm Tenkeyless was so compact, and the detachable USB wire is nice too (for travel and stuff). I`m going to keep looking. I`m hooked on Mech KBs now since I got my Filco, I love the feeling!

Check out the CM Storm TK, it has a numpad. The arrow keys are still on the keyboard as well. I used to do a lot of data entry and so i needed to use the keyboard a lot. I would have bought the TK if it came out earlier

Hey, I'm not sure of your in the Toronto area but I picked up my cm storm Quickfire pro from Canada computers at Yonge and finch for just $69. It's got brown switches and it's a great keyboard if you don't mind a little weight.

Unfortunately I'm in Montreal. And I haven't seen any local stores carry mechanical keyboards lately.. So far all the suggestions seem to be for CM Storm keyboards, and that's pretty much what I'm looking for because they're a tad cheaper in price, but still give good quality. Maybe I'll wait until Boxing day and see if anything goes on special online.

Anyone know the best site for buying a mechanical keyboard from in the UK?
Also, any physical stores that sell mechanical keyboards in the UK where I could go and try one out? None of the major retailers seem to do them at all and would love to try some out before I buy.
Thanks.

I don't know many stores in Montreal but there are 2 that comes to mind, CIPC and Microbytes. Both are carrying mech boards but they are pretty limited in choices, not a lot of switches options.
CIPC have the CM Storm QFR in reds for 80$ HERE
Microbytes only have the QFR version in blue but you could ask them is they can get the switches you like (You may also do the same thing at CIPC if you really want browns switches). Else they have the Trigger and Pro version in browns but they aren't as portable. You can look on their website HERE

Do not choose the Corsair K60 keyboard! It is not completely mechanical, does not have MX switches on all keys. Escape, function keys, arrow keys, PgUp, PgDn, etc., are rubber dome.
|
i know, but does it rly matter?
|
If you really like the design of the Corsair keyboard and think your brother will really like it - then get it, it's not big deal that all the buttons aren't mechanical.
I would, however, also look into Cooler Master's keyboard line-up: Keyboards
The Steelseries 6gv2 is also a good keyboard, but do note that the left Windows key is a Steelseries function key. Also, the 6gv2 comes (since recently) in red switches, so if you think that blacks will be stiff try the red ones.
I would advise against buying Razer keyboards. They are just not as good as the others and cost the same or more.
Also, thermaltake and Zowie have mechanical keyboards, you should check them our as well.

Amazon.de has a gray Cherry G80-3000 for 52 €, so that's how low you could go for a fair price, but Corsair sells their keyboard for 87 €, and still felt the need to save money and not use switches on all keys. It sounds a bit like a scam, and you should punish them by giving your money to someone else (like Coolermaster). :-P

Hey guys, I've been looking at mechanical keyboards for a long time trying to find one that meets my exacting specifications (Volume Dial, Backlight, and normal Left-Windows key instead of SteelSeries' random proprietary one)
I recently came across this one at a local store and was wondering if anyone here had bought it and had some opinions on it: Gigabyte Aivia Osmium
It seems to have all the features I want in a keyboard, and the few reviews i've found online praise it's overall construction and feel. I tried lifting up the box and it DID feel heavy and solid, but it was well sealed and I couldn't try the keys. I was wondering if anyone owned it and could tell me a bit more about how the keys feel, how they are for typing/gaming, etc.
Thanks a lot!! :D

I'm surprised....ripster, do you play starcraft? You seem to be branching out of your old geekhack stomping grounds.
I just checked geekhack, and dear god did they change the layout. It looks like an amateur bbs now, like nexgenwars did XD
