If noise is a big issue a keyboard with blacks/reds and o-rings will be as quiet as any normal rubber dome, quieter than many. A brown switch keyboard with O-rings is a hell of a lot quieter than a blue one also. I live in a small apartment and am getting by with browns + o-rings without annoying anyone too much.

If browns are the way to go, could anyone suggest me a good place or good boards to get for the UK as most of the links i have seen in this thread are either US or AU based.
Thanks!

Yes browns feel quite different and are notably quieter. You can make them even more quiet with o-rings/landing pads.

thekeyboard co is the only UK store I know of. Apparently quite reputable even if their website is pretty ugly. Grabbing a Filco is never a bad choice.

Instead of getting a different keyboard altogether you might wanna look into o-ring modifications, they seem to dampen the sound quite a bit.

This is a good point. There is a video comparing the sound of each switch with and w/o orings. Ill try find it.

Here it is

Grabbing a filco is indeed never a bad choice (expecting my first filco to arrive tomorrow D but it's quite an expensive one. Any cherry MX switch aside from the blue one is noticably quieter, with the blacks and reds being the quietest in the bunch. There's some comparison video's available on youtube, take a look there.

They are expensive, Cherry is the cheap alternative from keyboard co. There is a post outlining which cherry has which switches a few pages back.

I can also attest to how quiet brown switches are with O-Rings. Honestly I've forgotten almost that I'm typing on a mechanical keyboard, because its so darn quiet. I'm not even joking. The only thing that makes it distinguishable is the branding and the tactile bump.

Just got my rosewill with cherry reds. About a year ago I owned a ducky with browns so I decided to go for a keyboard with linear switches this time around. So far I'm loving the red switches. Right before this I was using a qsenn, and while I can't necessarily say this keyboard is above and beyond better than the qsenn, it definitely is an excellent keyboard. I especially like the sound of the keys bottoming out for osu! ^^

i've got the same Rosewill here. Reds are indeed a joy to press and listen to. word of advice, take care when connecting and disconnecting the cable to the keyboard. It's not like you're going to be doing it a lot but if you read reviews, you'll know that there's a big issue with the port on the keyboard. The joints are fragile and can be dislodged. I've had mine for aroudn 4 months I think. I added some tape and stuff around so that it never disconnects.

Good to know. My rosewill redswitch came last night and im very satisfied. However i dont intend to unplug it and it did have a secure fit but still knowledge is power.

Just thought I'd share my experience with my Ducky DK 1087 with browns.

The keyboard was awesome and I was thoroughly in love until I spilled a full glass of porter directly into the keys.

After letting it dry (first mistake i think, should have cleaned immediately), finding almost all the keys completely gummed up, then cleaning it with only water (also to no avail), I tried swapping each switch individually w/ a q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol. I would clean around the switch, then depress them w/ the q-tip and give each switch mound a nice rim job (hehe). Then I would grab the switch between the nails of my thumb and middle finger and repeatedly move them up and down (so the isopropyl alcohol would hopefully get spread to any points of contact that were gumming up and remove the beer residue). Then I gave each switch another rim job and let it dry.

That pretty much worked and it got the keyboard back to about 95% functionality. Occasionally, some of the keys resist a little bit for the first press after not using the keyboard for a while. The only key I really have any problems with is the 'e' key. I think it's seating is a little off or something as not all key presses register on it, but if you give it a firm decisive click, it usually works and will work for a while. I've just gotten used to clicking my 'e' hard.

tl;dr: Cleaning ducky DK1087, cherry browns, w/ isopropyl alcohol + q-tip revives it from near death after have 10 oz. of porter dumped directly onto the keys.

When orange juice was spilled over my CM Storm QFR I just simply used my warranty and got a new one. No regrets other than the one month waiting period.

Hmm...that thought never occurred to me, lol. I'm not sure if I had a warranty or not.

So my razer blackwidow died on me after less than 2 years. I am quite deceived and for that reason, i want to invest in a better mechanical keyboard. One of my gf complaint is that the blackwidow is very loud so that is one criteria. Also, i do quite a lot of typing so i need a good mechanical that can do both gaming and tapping. I feel like MX brown may be the best choice here.

Only thing tough is it seems quite pricey and even more since i live in Canada. Ducky DK9008G2 PBT seems great but i am wondering if i could consider something else. Thanks for your help

it does look nice for a "gaming" device and not something with 3k lights and macro buttons all over the fucking place, I wouldn't buy it but it's good to see big companies getting into the mechanical side of things as it allows the consumer more diversity and hopefully the competition will create some more innovation and better products

I'm looking into getting my first mechanical keyboard. I've looked at all the recommended keyboards, but I'm unsure of what to make of all this. The keyboard would probably be primarily used for gaming, so are blue/brown switches better? I don't press too hard when I type. I like the responsive clicking/feedback I get when I used my friends' keyboards. What would be a good quality/value keyboard?

^if you can I always recommend trying different switch types before you buy- if your friends have mechanical keyboards for example. Or some electronics retailers carry Blackwidows so you could try blues.
Just going by what you're saying if noise isn't an issue I'd go with blue switches or browns if it is. Either way I recommend you try first.

Not a fan of those large wristrest type things on keyboards. 130-150 for browns is quite steep; for that price I'd rather buy a Filco. Cleaner board, I trust it more. Don't need backlighting either. The price just doesn't really make sense to me for what you're getting.

Well, I've only tried my friend's BlackWidow, and blue switches seem nice. I've heard brown switches are quieter, but what is the difference? My friend's bw doesn't seem too loud to me, but what is the difference in how the keys respond to typing? And what kind of keyboard would you recommend for good blue/brown switches?
