Browns have a much more muted tactile bump than the blues and they don't have the loud click. As a result, they're a lot quieter than the blue switches.
Blacks are linear switches, so the pressure increases as you continue to depress the switch. The actuation force on these switches are much heavier than those of browns and blues, so if you're used to blues you'll find yourself fatiguing quite a bit after prolonged use.
Linear switches are quieter than tactile switches.
In terms of sound, from quietest to loudest: Reds = Blacks > Browns > Blues

Rosewill RK-9000. $64 with free shipping. Full-sized board that's pretty much a Filco clone. Only downside to the board is the USB connector, which should be an issue if you're keeping your board stationary.
I would still recommend it over the Celeritas and the 6Gv2.
Also, from personal experience:
GAMING Reds > Browns > Blues > Blacks TYPING Blues > Browns = Reds > Blacks
Black switches too stiff for my personal preference.

Blues are louder, only because they have a click mechanism. Both boards will still be loud of you constantly bottom out. Get O-Rings to help mask the sound.
Having used blank keycaps (and still do on my typing board), I find it quite easy to type. I have come across the situation that you've mentioned and have used both methods. I usually find it easier to keep both hands on the keyboard to access the numbers, that way you don't have to manually look down and count left to right.

@Sawedust - Thanks a bunch man! I only have one question though: Where are you finding it for $64?

Hey sawedust, awesome information man! seems like your the only one replying on this thread =(
Anyways why do you consider reds the best for gaming? You have actually made me rethink my choices of keyboards! I'm going to look into cherry reds. I want the BEST possible gaming experience

From my experiences, Steelseries 6gv2 is definitely a very solid black keyboard. It's crisp and feels like it can certainly tank(?) a lot of damage. It's supposed to last a long time as well.
I'm not a fan of the blacks though. They have a little too much resistance for me and I want the tactile feel. I almost pulled the trigger on a brown/blue Rosewill when there was a deal for $64, but hesitated because of the infamous USB connector problem. I've read that the keyboard itself is quite nice though as long as you don't move it around much.

Where do you see the Rosewills for $64? I know that Newegg or somewhere had that deal a recently, but I haven't seen it at that price after that.

I have a cherry mx red keyboard. I came from membranes, and when I first started off it was very difficult to type properly. Red keys are really light. I was accidentally pressing keys all the time just by trying to rest my fingers on the keyboard. There is almost no feedback or resistance so it doesn't feel nice on your fingers like blues/browns with the tactile bump. Getting used to where the actuation point is was difficult as well. However, because they are so light, it makes quick and reactive key presses much easier, perfect for games like starcraft or even FPS. It has made my SC2 experience much less tiring on my hands, and my APM increased quite a bit as well. Even with all the difficulties I faced in the beginning, I came to embrace them once I got used to how deep to hit the keys and how much pressure to use. I love them for typing now since its like typing on air, totally effortless.

Kind of random, but do mechanical keyboards break in? I had a Das keyboard and the stroke was smoother and lighter than the new Filco I just bought. I'm wondering if there's a break in for the switches cause I had that Das for like 2 years.

Not really. The switch will pretty much always have the same actuation force requirement. Do the two board you have have the same types of switches?

Same switches, both are browns. The Das is lighter to press and the stroke definately feels much smoother.

super exited for my zowie browns to come in 2 days! replacing this disgusting rubber dome piece of garbage!

It's your imagination, or the keycaps of the two are different.
Apparently Filcos have some extra coating on the keycap, or something like that from a little Google-ing.

Any info on when the Steelseries 6Gv2 with red switches is going to be released for public sale?
|
So, im just thinking
Steelseries 6gv2 or TT Meka G1 ?

I have a cherry mx3800 with blue switches...had it about a year and its got pretty quiet
It's a beautiful typing keyboard....and for gaming I'd recommend it though the f keys are really far away which makes screen location in sc a bit hard but I still use them. I think Socke was using the same keyboard

The $64 Rosewills are pretty common deals over at Newegg, they have it every now and then. If another sale on those boards pop up, I will definitely post ITT to let everyone know.

Glad you're finding it useful! The reason why I like the red switches is because they're very light as CalvinL said. Not only are they light and easy to press, but the lack of a tactile bump makes it a lot easier to spam keys and have them actuate properly as you don't have to wait for the keys to bounce back up to the release point before another keystroke registers. Perfect gaming switch in my opinion.
And when it comes to using them outside of gaming, think of it as typing on a cloud of boobs. If that doesn't sell you on reds, I don't know what will.

Yes, mechanical keyboards do break in. The reason why the Filco board feels a lot tighter is because your Das has already been used for two years; the switches on your Das will feel a lot smoother and lighter, exactly what you mentioned.
Give it a few weeks and you'll find that the feel between the boards will become more similar as time goes on.

I have a bit of a mystery on my hands with my (wonderful) new noppoo choc mini. There are strange red symbols like this : + Show Spoiler + on the sides of f10 anf f11. what is the function of these fn+f10 and fn+11 keys? volume is clearly marked elsewhere on the board its not volume. I'm perplexed!

i haven't used mechanical for a long time, but i've used blues and currently reds. I play Sc2 and Quakelive and can attest to reds being great for both gaming and typing. I tried playing FPS with blues but the tactility didnt help especially when i had to double-tap to dodge. My movement was messed. With reds, that problem is gone since they're easy to press. Also, I find myself playing for extended periods without finger or wrist pain. Many complain that the keys are too light but I've since gotten used to this Rosewill rk-9000(which feels so good btw).
If you end up getting the Rosewill with reds, make sure you somehow secure the USB connector thingy. I read the reviews on Newegg and was very scared at first. When the $64 deal came up though, I jumped on it because I wanted to try red switches. I secured mine with electical tape and some strings.
I suggest getting reds. I've heard too many complaints from people using black switches to even consider them. Blues are great for typing and you can probably play SC2 with them but might have some trouble double tapping. Reds feel sooo good, man. I bought this Rosewill mainly to try out the reds and it hasn't let me down. The whole keyboard feels solid. Down the line though, I will be looking to upgrade maybe to a Filco Ninja with reds.

What is wrong with USB connectors?

On August 08 2012 02:51 AngryFarmer wrote: What is wrong with USB connectors?
the complaint is that the USB connector is very fragile and can be damaged easily. People have complained that after several months the keyboard won't work due to that. Here's a picture someone posted on Geekhack.
![[image loading]](http://geekhack.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=33408.0;attach=889;image)
if you move the cable connected to it, then you will start moving this area shown and can damage it. I've secured mine with black electrical tape.
[![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/P6K7i.jpg) it's pretty solid and hopefully it holds cuz this keyboard rocks. kinda weird though right? lol
