Any bits that obviously need changing? It's been a while since I've done this so particularly with the GPU I don't really know what's best. Edit - added total cost 6770 is fine, it can handle high and even ultra at 1080p. You need to replace power supply... this build will never exceed 200w so you don't need a garbage fake 650w unit. Get an Antec Earthwatts 380D or Corsair CX430v2 instead. You're not overclocking either so some H77s will be less and H67s will be significantly less. H67 will still allow you to upgrade to Ivybridge with a BIOS update. Thanks a lot, the corsair PSU looks nice. What should I be looking for in a motherboard for my budget? I was thinking about upgrading the processor down the line with something that will overclock, maybe a 2500K, is it worth getting a board that can do that now or replacing it with the chip?

In two years, you won't be upgrading to a 2500k or 3570k unless you are willing to buy used. So if this was the case, you would just get a core i3 and a H61 or H67 motherboard. When you want to upgrade, you'll buy a new motherboard since it will be required for the newer processors.

I’m looking for a completely new gaming setup, the current desktop I use is about 5 years old. I’ve made some small adjustments over the years, but nothing major. I’ve been following the thread for a while, but I’m still relatively useless when it comes down to the actual components. Anyway, here are my answers to the OP questions. + Show Spoiler + What is your budget? I would be hoping for something around the £600 range. I have £1000 set aside, but I’d like that to pay for my entire setup, so I’d want a decent amount leftover for a nice monitor and a good keyboard, alongside maybe a new headset. What is your resolution? Currently 1024 x 768, but I'm looking for a new monitor. I don’t really know much about monitors, but a friend has told me 1920 x 1080, so that’s probably what I’ll be looking at. What are you using it for? Gaming, primarily, with some time spent doing tasks from work, but these will be easily covered by any desktop. My main aim is to play Starcraft (mainly 1v1, but with the occasional 4v4), Guild Wars 2 and possibly Skyrim (or other games of this nature) smoothly on high/ultra settings if possible. What is your upgrade cycle? Around 2 years I would say. When do you plan on building it? I plan on ordering the parts as soon as possible. Do you plan on overclocking? I’ve never overclocked before and I would probably not want to, but I would consider it if it would make a significant difference. Do you need an operating system? Yes, ill be needing a copy of Windows 7 Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Not really. If it would make a significant difference without going too high over my budget then possibly, but otherwise no. Where are you buying your parts from? I live in the UK, so most likely any internet site that will ship to me, amazon or ebuyer maybe. I can also visit computer fairs, so just the name of the component with an around about price would be enough for me to find it myself.

I'll be using it mostly for gaming and I'd like to start streaming games like d3, sc2, and tera @ 1920x1200. I don't plan on upgrading for a few years, been using my current machine for almost 5 years to give an idea of my upgrade cycle. I already have an OS, might buy a second gpu later for SLI, and I plan on overclocking the 3770k to around 4.3-4.5GHz. MSI Z77A-GD65 & i7-3770k Bundle - $508 Cooler Master HAF 932 - $128 EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti Superclocked 1024 MB - $250 (same price at newegg) Antec HCG-750 750W 80+ Bronze - $110 Crucial M4 64GB SATA III SSD - $82 Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz - $50 Total: $1128 Max Budget: $1250 Any recommendations on better deals or possible upgrades would be much appreciated. As I mentioned, I'm looking to stick with the cpu+mobo combo but I'd say I'm probably 90% set with the choice. Thanks in advance! The hyperthreading of a 3770k will help with streaming but will basically be useless for gaming since most games these days still only use two cores. So you may want to get a 3570k instead but if you don't care than okay the 3770k is fine. The combo you posted for the GD65 and 3770k is $508 after mail in rebate. I'm not sure if you are including mail in rebates in your total or just don't know what they are? Mail in rebates aren't an instant discount - a form has to be filled out, mailed, approved, processed, and mailed back to you in the form of a cheque or prepaid credit card. This process usually takes a few months, assuming you followed the instructions correctly, the company doesn't deny / reject it, and it doesn't get lost in the mail - if any of that happens than goodbye money. The combo is $528 at checkout. Not really much of a deal to be had. Crucial M4 128gb is $125, easily fits into your budget: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=60445&promoid=1018 Really, you shouldn't be getting a 64gb SSD these days with this kind of budget. Corsair Vengeance is overpriced and has ridiculously tall heatspreaders that won't clear a lot of tower heatsinks. There are tons of other options available for $30-$40. A GTX 560 Ti for $250 is overpriced. A Radeon HD7850 is the same price and an overall better card. If you want to remain with Nvidia for whatever reason, GTX 560 Ti can be had for less. ASUS DirectCu II @ $235: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=64376&promoid=1018 , Gigabyte Windforce @ $220: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58366&promoid=1018 , EVGA @ $230: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130623 A full tower case is not necessary. A 750w unit is not necessary and the High Current Gamer isn't a good choice either. 650w is plenty of power for SLI and overclocking every component. Rosewill Capstone is better for the same price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182073 The 650w variant is OOS atm. There are of course other options that are better / equal for less such as the Antec Earthwatts for $100 ($85 after promo code IVYPSU15, ends 5/5) with a $20 mail in rebate, which is basically the same thing as the HCG - just with different branding: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371051 You're also missing a heatsink for overclocking.

I live in the UK and i'm looking to get a new computer soon and wanted to see if i could get some help finalising everything before i get it. Btw i apologise if this isn't the right thread to post in, i know its not exactly me that will be building it. I'll mainly be using it for streaming (mainly sc2), gaming (starcraft 2, LoL, maybe some FPS games like BF3), watching streams (dual monitors - streaming on each monitor so multiple streams open at once - which lags my current machine a bit) and working on my website which is in wordpress (reason i mention this is, again my current computer lags if im watching a stream on one monitor and trying to do a wordpress post in the other - dont know if that means anything or if its just browser / flash based issues) Alot of my friends use http://www.overclockers.co.uk for pre-built systems and i've been looking at a few and have narrowed it down to the following two (want to make some adjustments to them though): http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-224-OE OR http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-212-OE I'm wanting to put a decent graphics card in it (was looking at either GTX 580 or GTX 650Ti) and having 16gb ram. I've been reading up on the i7 2700k and the i7 3820 and they seem to be pretty much the same in terms of performance, however if i buy either of the above the i7 2700k gets a better clock (4.8ghz 2700k vs 4.2ghz 3820) I've answered the questions on the OP as best i can: What is your budget? Approx £1,200.00 What is your resolution? 1650 x 1080 (for each monitor - both DVI or VGA connections) What are you using it for? Gaming (Starcraft 2, LoL, few other single player games) Streaming (Mainly Starcraft 2) Watching Dual streams (one stream per monitor) website work Photoshop What is your upgrade cycle? When it blows up! (approx 3-4 years depending on whether i need an upgrade to do what i want to do on it, hence the upgrade now - cant stream on my computer or multitask without experiencing lag) When do you plan on building it? By the end of this month (May 2012) Do you plan on overclocking? The machine with come with an overclock. Do you need an Operating System? No. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Not at this current time, however i may consider it in 6-12 months time but its not important. Where are you buying your parts from? http://www.overclockers.co.uk - appears to be the best value for money in the UK Any help would be really appreciated, i'm currently at / near budget and just need to know if i should be spending more for what i want it to do and if i've made the right choices or if i should modify the orders in any way. I have built computers before, just never a gaming system (usually just standard desktop machines for reading emails / browsing the web, light gaming here and there) hence why i wanted to buy a prebuilt one from a company that (hopefully) knows what they're doing.

First of all; thumbs up for everyone here helping noobies build their computer! The posts here helped me enormously when I build my current computer (except that I managed to buy an half-compatible motherboard+memory, resulting in enormous bottlenecks) Anyway, since I got recommended to a german site by a colleague of mine, I found a good-looking pc to buy, but I wanted you guys' opinion first. This is the link: http://www.pc24-store.de/Gaming-Systeme/PC-Systeme-Intel/Six-Core-i7-3930K-Ultra-Gamer-HD7970-3GB.html I'm terrible at German, but the names of the items are still te same, and I might be able to translate some stuff if someone asks. Anyway, the list of items, with some follow-up questions: Items: CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-3930K @ 6x 4.00GHz (Sandy-Bridge-E, Top-Model with free multi)* CPU-cooler: Scythe Ninja 3 (High-End Cooler with quit 120mm PWM exhaust & 16 Kupferheatpipes (copperheatpipes?) For just gaming, the CPU is massive overkill. You have a 6-core CPU with HyperThreading while most games don't utilize more than 2 non-HT cores. I'm not very familiar with the Scythe Ninja cooler, but Scythe makes good stuff usually (especially the Mugen series is well-liked). I don't know the PSU brand at all, so no idea if it's a good PSU or a shitty one with good-looking specs. Other components look reasonable. Do realize that you're paying a premium for buying it pre-built. * free multi? Anyone knows what that means? It means that the multiplier is unlocked, allowing you to easily overclock the CPU. ** I'm usually a Nvidia buyer, I've seen some reviews, but I'm still torn between this one and the GTX680 2GB, anyone have advice for this? I wil change it to the GTX 680 otherwise. I'm not very up-to-date on latest benchmarks and prices, but I believe that the GTX680 is a bit more powerful than the 7970, but at a higher price. So it becomes a price-versus-performance trade-off that you'll have to make. Whichever brand of cards you bought in the past should not influence this as both companies make fine hardware and brand loyalty is a silly thing in the PC market. 1. There's an option to upgrade the CPU to an Intel i7-3960K @ 6x 4,20GHz, going to read reviews about this item later today, might cost me €379,00, not sure if that's worth it? Referring back to my first comment: The current CPU is already massive overkill for gaming. I would definitely not upgrade it. Instead, it would be more interesting to look at the new Ivy Bridge CPUs. While they may not have the 6-core power of the CPUs you mentioned, they're more powerful for less parallelized tasks (including games!) and use less energy. 2. There's another option to expand the RAM to 32 GB DDR3 RAM PC1600 (4x 8GB) for129,00 €, that's necessary for a long-term planning (5/6 years) with a gaming build right? 16 GB is already overkill for gaming. RAM is fairly cheap, so it's not that big a loss to have 16 GB in your rig, but upgrading to 32 seems excessive. RAM usually only gets cheaper as time goes by and DDR3 RAM is not going to go out of production any time soon. 3. The same colleague recommended adding an OCZ Vertex3 120GB SSD 2,5" for 149,00 €, it'd make the start-up processes much, much faster; any thought on this? SSDs are very nice to boost the speed at which the OS and software is loaded. It won't actually benefit your FPS though. I personally wouldn't go for this particular model as it has a SandForce controller, which is getting mixed reviews on reliability. In general: You speak about a 5-6 year timeframe for this machine. Usually it is rather unwise to buy an extremely high-end rig and use it for that long. It's often more economical to buy a cheaper machine now and refresh it in 2-3 years. The added price for that little bit of extra performance at the top end is quite high. You could literally half the price of the machine you linked (1770 euro -> 885) and have a machine that will perform nearly as good for almost every task.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3 (With High-End X79 Chip set (USB 3.0 & S-ATA/600)) Memory: 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3-1600MHz von G.Skill (Ripjaws-Serie with red cooler) Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD7970 mit 3072MB GDDR5 (DirectX 11.1 and OpenGL 4.2, 1x DVI, 1x HDMI, 2x Mini-DisplayPort)** Hard Disk: 1000GB 3,5" S-ATA Samsung/Seagate Hard disk (7200RPM, mind. 32MB Cache) DVD- burner: LG GH-22NS >>> 22fach Super Multi DVD-burner (S-ATA, DL, DVD-R4AM) Case: NZXT Phantom in black Power Supply: CobaNitrox 750W IT-7750SG Rev 2.0 (Modular, 80Plus certified, 6x PCIe) Other: 7.1 HD Sound, Gigabit LAN, USB 3.0, S-ATA / 600 RAID and eS-ATA / 600 Questions: Item questions * free multi? Anyone knows what that means? ** I'm usually a Nvidia buyer, I've seen some reviews, but I'm still torn between this one and the GTX680 2GB, anyone have advice for this? I wil change it to the GTX 680 otherwise. other questions 1. There's an option to upgrade the CPU to an Intel i7-3960K @ 6x 4,20GHz, going to read reviews about this item later today, might cost me €379,00, not sure if that's worth it? 2. There's another option to expand the RAM to 32 GB DDR3 RAM PC1600 (4x 8GB) for129,00 €, that's necessary for a long-term planning (5/6 years) with a gaming build right? 3. The same colleague recommended adding an OCZ Vertex3 120GB SSD 2,5" for 149,00 €, it'd make the start-up processes much, much faster; any thought on this? [EDIT] 4. I'm currently using Windows XP, thinking of upgrading to 7, home edition; do I need to go 32 or 64 bit? 5. Anything else I should add? Thanks for reading ![]() Budget, what you will use it for, resolution, etc. the normal stuff. If it's just your mobo you can just replace it for like 100 and save 1700 if your current PC is good. You don't give us enough information to really help you but I'll answer the questions: 1. no 2. no 3. SSD yes OCZ no 4. 64 5. What do you mean? It's overpriced and likely full of features you don't really have a use for along with a pisspoor power supply. Just for perspective here's the prices of all your components in germany for comparison: 510 + 33 + 174 + 80 + 425 + 83 + 16 + 40 + 140 = 1501 so you're paying around ~276 for having them build it. Verdict: No just no. http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=58313&agid=1728 There's something to consider if you want a pretty similiar prebuilt

(It's generally most likely to fit properly from the outside, unless you've got like a slotloader.) 2: If you have kids, pets, are clumsy, or have a high dust area, I'd put that shit in, pain in the ass or not.

The danger is that if something catches a cable, it can snap soldered connections off a motherboard. I've seen USB ports lost that way. And of course, it turns into more of a dust trap with more open spaces. The I/O shield DOES serve some good purposes.

It'll go faster the second time around ![]() Basically, forgetting the IO Shield means that dust and other small stuff can enter the case in that area, which can be an issue. Especially if random items are entering while the machine is running. Personally, I would bite the bullet and get the IO Shield installed. It's less work than you think, just disconnect everything, leave harddisks and DVD drive in the case, take out the video card, then unscrew the motherboard and take it out, CPU, cooler and RAM still installed. Install the IO Shield and then reinstall all the hardware.

The ammount a pre-built from overclockers.co.uk costs is ridiculous, it's soooo not worth it. Just save like £300+ and buy the parts yourself and build it, it's extremely easy with manuals. If you've built computers before, what are you worried about? As long as you're grounded and don't force components into places that they're not supposed to be, you aren't gonna break anything.
