Q: What should I be posting about? A: Basically, anything you want to talk about but aren't sure if it warrants a topic of its own. Heard a rumour you want to share? A new video? A question you are sure is super common but can't find the answer to via searching? A brilliant new idea that you want to vet, to make sure it's really as brilliant as you think it is?
This is the place.
Note: Posting standards will not be as high as if you were to make a new thread, but pointless spam will still not be tolerated. I have seen threads like these work out alright on other sites (for other games) so I figured, why not give it a shot? It's possible there's not really enough content for something like this to exist at this point in time, but no harm then, it will just die on its own.
A question I've always wondered is, how are the booths for tournaments? Are they all air conditioned? Do some tournaments have better booths than others? Does it get hot in there ? Does it ever smell in there?
Hey im new into starcraft and wonder what is the best race to go for? i dont care about simplicity or not ive played many RTSs before ( such as C&C and sadly Halo wars >.<) any pointers?
in the GSTL, TL vs ZeNEX, Life did a very interesting fast muta build against Jinro and won. my Gomplayer was lagging heavily so I couldn't catch the key timings.
My question is: Does anyone remember how many mutas and what time they got out? And what time was the lair finished? Did he drone and make muta or just save everything for more muta production?

Hi TigerSushi, Welcome to Starcraft !
Obviously everybody will give you different opinion on what’s best to play. Win rates tend to be pretty even regardless of what race you choose, with some variation caused temporarily by metagame. Basic idea is:
Terran, a lot of versatility in early game. Benefits greatly from being able to multi-task and micro (unit control).
Protoss, you will make gateway units every game, with different supporting units. If you like using sentries, stalkers, templars, colossus then this might be for you.
Zerg, very reactive, you need to scout and know your opponents build. Not the best at sieging / being offensive to defended bases until late game. If you like playing big macro games and not missing queens injects (good mechanics) then good race for you.
May be watch some streams or MLG/GSL/SPL whatever tournament you want and see which ones excite you the most :D
(and if your talking about BW... please ignore my post :p)
Also how come in SC2 are multiple people allowed the same name? BW was 1 name per person. IE) If i made the name Green someone else couldn't take it.. they should bring it back get's rid of all the bm smurfs.
I had two of the biggest fails in SC2 the other night. I built two dt shrines right next to each other and somehow managed to upgrade air armor before warpgate.
QUESTION: Why do units die so quickly in SC2? I dunno but for some reason the units all feels so "soft" compared to BW units and I never really thought about it too much until recently cuz I was playing around with Starcraft Master and I realized that it's a pretty obvious deviation from back then. Do you think decreasing attack speeds would help make units easier to micro and stuff? Cuz battles just always seem to end so fast that even if I'd prefer not to 1a everything it ends up being just a couple of steps above that with how fast battles can end. I mean, you'd think that by them making "perfect macro" a whole lot easier, they'd want you to do more micro but for some reason it feels like I micro less in SC2 than in BW...

Just venting and a little curious
I personally agree that this isn't great, but while you could say it makes SC2 easier you could also say it's harder in different ways than in BW.
I just prefer having the ability to make the most of my units in an epic drawn out engagement and that is "harder" as in there's less time to do the same in SC2 as you could in BW. Engagements end so fast. Laser shows. Banelings. Marauders. The whole game is faster; units move, clump, attack, and die faster.
A lot of engagements are decided by pre-engagement position more than mid-engagement micro (I won't count spellcasting in micro since that's really mostly just aiming an instant aoe of doom, be it storm fungal emp), this certainly doesn't exclude micro from it altogether, but it doesn't feel as important. (You'll still die if you don't pull colossi back from vikings, etc)
I was thinking of making a thread asking people to send emails to the media to raise awareness of the upcoming MLG. Maybe, send some emails to local news/radio stations in Anaheim, or maybe to CNN or something. Anything to atleast let MLG be mentioned on TV.
I even thought of sending a message to late night talk shows around Anaheim. They always do those bits where they interview people talking at various conventions/events.

The GSL booths never get too hot, their studio is kinda cold even in the summer. MLG booths can be scorching hot as far as I remember, but I thiiiiiiiink they may also be the most soundproof? Not entirely sure. I don't remember much from DH booths except that they were nice lol

Terran is the most aggressive and offensive multitask oriented race, and it also really lends itself to good use of terrain. Also probably has the most diverse styles of play with how different mech vs biomech vs bio plays out, and the relative viability of all three options in all three matchups (much less so mech in TvP). By far the most micro heavy race.
Zerg is the most passive race (though I think this gives slightly the wrong impression as they have a lot of aggressive options too, just that they benefit the most from being left to their own devices) and a race that will really benefit from a broad perspective I think (you will be very spread out, constantly increasing your creep and with bases all over the map you have to really be on your toes to keep them all defended). Probably the race that depends the most on having carefully mapped out openings, as you always wanna skirt the line of 'just enough' shit to not die, while being as greedy as possible. Least demanding microwise.
Protoss has a lot of bullshit they can pull, with viable timings at every stage of the game (kind of similar to terran). Early game you'll have a lot of micro potential and cute (bullshit) moves, or you can just sit back and go for a more economical play. Incredibly strong 2 base timings. Late midgame you will generally be playing a 'ball' game, moving your gigantic blob of combined arms around the map slaughtering shit and expanding behind it. Late game you have more map presence than any other race with the power of warp-ins turning a single pylon into a threat.
I was pretty sure he had me dead about 3-4 times this game. It got to the point where I just rage scanned his 4th base to see how far ahead he was with the intent of GGing out.
I wonder, how many top 8 diamond players I need to beat before I get out of plat?
I have not installed SC2 properly, but rather copied the game folder from my other machine and it works perfectly, but the replay files (when viewed in windows files browser) are not associated with anything. I tried associating them with Starcraft.exe, but all it does is start SC2 and not play the replay, so anyone has any idea to which file I should associate SC2Replay files to?

Hey what i did was open with sc2switcher which can be found in the support folder in your starcraft II directory see if that works.

This is sorta SC related but sorta not. I'm sitting here watching Sportscenter and they brought up a stat, saying some guy won four races and has five top 5 finishes. I've seen stuff like this in SC as well but the question is, when looking at the top 5/top 10 or whatever finishes, do they count the ones before it? Meaning, in the first example, did he only get one 2-5th plance finish or five between 2-5? Shit like this always bugs me >,<

You should try them all a couple of times and see which ones you like best
and if you go to youtube.com/filtersc he has a tutorial for terran and is working on one for zerg

No they don't.
It is useful to note that during the warp-in process, the unit warping in is vulnerable in two ways. First, enemy forces can directly attack the warping-in unit, suffering normal damage.

To be fair, Jinro got awfully close when describing toss.
The warp-in mechanic makes Protoss pretty hard to analyze as an aggressive or defensive race, because Warp Gate really allows them to do anything on the fly due to the near-instant reinforcement and how pooling up money is actually beneficial to the race. So Jinro isn't really far off when they said they can "pull off a lot of bullshit". While their unit compositions are overall linear, there's a lot of tricks Protoss can do that ultimately makes them the mindgaming race.
Though to be fair, Protoss has some rather extreme weaknesses. They have to rely on the sentry to survive the early game, and then they have to rely on some form of higher tech (Colossus or High Templar) to pull them through the midgame. Of course I'm talking about TvP, but ZvP is a pretty big mess as well. They can handle high burst damage (which is why Mech is extremely difficult to play in TvP), but they can't handle high DPS (which is why MMM is so dominant in this match-up). Zerg basically just streams in an extreme amount of Roaches to overwhelm Protoss while they can't have Colossus.
Hi, I'm new to posting on TL. I usually just read and so never made an account before. I just made this account and so I can't create a new thread. I wanted to make a thread about contacting media angencies to raise awareness of MLG Anaheim. Timing is very crucial So I can't wait 3 days. Could someone create a thread for me and just copy the following into it?
I am hoping that the community can pull together to create some attention for the upcoming MLG in Anaheim. I know, this is a very last minute effort, but I think it is worth trying. We should contact various media angencies to get their attention of this event. We could do it via email, facebook, twitter, or whatever.
First, here are some actual media releases that I did find related to MLG.
So, a comment on the press release. We would like an actual story and airtime on TV for MLG. So I think this is worth doing even though there is a press release.
Next, I'll list some things that are worth mentioning. Details about MLG I'm getting from the press release.
- Money Talks. Starcraft 2 Prize pool is worth 76K with 25K for first place. - Prove it is professional. Mention CBS Interactive acquiring advertising rights. Mention that players are on professional teams, salaried, and have big sponsors. Mention the press release. - Stress that it is international. There are players competing from different continents. - Mention the fact that it is something mainly distributed online. Media loves stories about the internet and a changing society. - Mention any top players that are really young (like Leenock/Maru) and will be playing at MLG. Media loves this kind of stuff. For example, the story of the 6 year old at a spelling bee. - Mention date and location. Other than the national news giants, the others I have selected because they are close to Anaheim.
Next, some companies to contact. I searched their sites for "MLG," and most have nothing except where noted.
-MSNBC http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10285339/ This has the most current info with the 3 articles listed above. Nothing really deserving of the title "story".
-CNN They have two feedbacks that are titled "News Tip" or "Story Idea". I'm not sure which is most appropriate. I leave to you to decide.
-Marketplace from American Public Media This is actually a national public radio show about business news that I like to listen to once in a while. They sometimes run stories about niche business news. When contacting them some history of the business side of eSports may catch their interest. Maybe focus on the online distribution? Best part, is they are located in LA so they should be able to send someone over on short notice if they are interested.
They often do bits where they interview people at conventions/events. Sometimes the fans are the butt of the jokes. It's up to you to decide if they are worth contacting. Personally, I think it would be kind of cool to see MLG on one of these shows. These are some located in CA.
Conan show website http://teamcoco.com/ No email. Just facebook and twitter. On right hand side of page.
Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated. Even if you can't contact everybody, please just contact at least a random selection. I'll post when I'm done making my contacts and I encourage you to do the same to show support.

You know QQ'ing aside, bacuse that's what I'm going to do in a minute, as a forever bronze Terran my thoughts when seeing the supply structure for each race goes something as follows:
vs T: A supply depot ooh lets kill it and supply block them.
vs Z: Crap an Overlord saw my push. Well at least I can kill it and maybe supply block them.
vs P: Sh!t Sh!t Sh!t a pylon! Why didn't I scout earlier! Maybe I can kill it before he warps in. Damn it!
The most infinitely valuable wisdom I could ever give you to help you on your personal trip through the leagues is this: Don't ever cry, whine, whinge or be affected by the perceived or actual short comings of your race. I am a zerg through and through. In the back of my head when I see a supply calldown I want to think about it being a shit ability for shit players that can't macro at all.
But I don't. Because if I do I will lose. I will think about things in terms of fairness instead of terms of victory. There is no fair or OP or cheap. There's a loss and a win. Don't worry blame your opponent or his race. You wouldn't say, "Oh I only won because my race is broken as fuck".
Just keep kicking peoples ass until you can find no more.

Don't worry my post was more to be humorous than any real issue I have against the other races. My failure to move out of bronze, for the last year and a half, is mostly due to lack of time to practice. Work and family mean I play about 4 games a week so improvement is slow.
Vs P: I tend to scout after depot looking for cheese and if I don't find any I do a 1 Rax gasless FE into 3 Rax timing with stim, shields and concussive when my first two medivacs pop. I also try to be active with my first marine looking for proxy pylons. I actually feel like I understand this matchup the best right now.
Vs T: I also tend to scout after depot looking for cheese and if I don't find any I do a 1 Rax gasless FE into marine tank medivac. My main issue here, aside from continuing to work on my macro, is I need to work on tank positional battles. Even if I'm ahead on my macro and supply I still lose way to many times by trying to break through siege lines. (I also have recently lost twice in the early game to massive reaper harrass. Is this a new thing? It hits between 6-7minutes with like 6-9 reapers)
Vs Z:
I'm still struggling here because I play it the least and am still trying together the hang of the reactor hellion opening. So I either die to an early bust because my hellions were late and I had no map control. Or I survive to the late late game but let the Zerg take most of the map.
In general though, when I lose I understand from the replay why I did, macro slipped, failed to scout, poor unit control, and i try to work on those areas for next time. Good news is i now win most of bronze v bronze matches and only lose to silver and gold. Maybe I'll make it out of bronze yet.
Honest to god, just pick a build and do it every time. With practice you'll be able to execute it comfortably and win at least 50% of your games then out of bronze and into silver you go!
I know that cheese is hard when you don't play often. I lost to a 8p double spine the other day. It happens; don't even think about it. As long as you (focus) practice macroing and executing a build properly then you'll improve.

Depends on how much you want to pay, but in general the Razer Deathadder is a very good product for a pretty good price. I'd go for one now after I got myself a useless SteelSeries Kinzu, lol.

I did: 1 Rax FE. I aim for 3 Rax 1 Fact 1 port & an eng bay by the time I push. I change whether I go tanks or straight to medivacs if I'm playing T or P. It's working as I'm playing silver and gold players now.
The only thing I can't hold is against one base Z if I FE. I always get baneling busted even with bunkers. So I've been trying the reactored hellion opening.
In any event after each loss or win I watch the replay and see where I was missing SCV production, where I was floating minerals and where my unit control fell short and try and work on it accordingly.
Judging from the players I'm playing I have been improving for several months. But when you play as many games in a week as some folks play in an hour it takes a while for your MMR to rise.

If watching pros play isn't boring to you (it took me some getting familiar with the game before pro play became interesting) then watch some videos and see what styles you like and what you would like to do (ultimately, obviously learning basics comes first). If no race really jumps out at you, just play random for a bit and see what you like.
It sounds like you have a very good idea of what you want to do. If you want analysis on what you should specifically practice shoot me a pm with a replay and I'll (probably) say focus on macroing. Until I reached platinum 9/10 Terrans that beat me did so by simply being able to out produce me and bury me under boots and treads.
The only thing I can't hold is against one base Z if I FE. I always get baneling busted even with bunkers. So I've been trying the reactored hellion opening.
Scouting. You see a baneling nest in the first 5 minutes, he's going to bust you. Maybe in gold he might be concerned that you're going to 3rax all in but in bronze- he will bust you. Simply put your barracks at the top of the ramp and build a bunker behind them and he'll never get in as long as you have more than 2 marines. Keep your 2nd CC in your main and oversaturate your mineral line while pumping marine-tank. Move to your nat once you have siege to cover the marines, float your second CC and build up bunkers/depots.
Even repositioning your barracks to be part of your wall at the nat can be useful. Every baneling that splodes on a building is a baneling that just helped you win.

Let's be fair here, bad pylon layout can cause killing one pylon to do far more damage than killing an overlord or a supply depot ever could, as long as its one of those special Artosis Pylons.
Also i like how terran and protoss have "viable timings" but only protoss' are "bullshit" I think cloaked banshees, BFH drops and strength of so many early game attacks from terran, makes both races feel like there is a lot of "bullshit" that can be pulled.

True, but that's a fault of the player not the race. Every race has a set of rules you need to follow in order to "not die". Having artosis pylon's isn't a weakness in the race, it's the player messing up.
I am trying to record some cast of starcraft 2, I know that you can get games under the feature tab, but they don't seem to be the same format. I am under the impression that they are sc1. If they are sc2 games how do i play them? If they are not where do i go to get sc2 games?
I don't know much about the casting scene and I know there are already many casters. I would use the small VOD if you need help brainstorming for games to cast and I would use gamereplays or another replay hosting site to find the actual replay.
Or you could cast smaller tournaments on youtube. Many great games get less exposure because it was in the Korean Weekly or Playham or whatnot.

I'm probably not as experienced as a lot of guys posting here, but what I've learned from SC BW and SC2 involving races is as such:
Terran: Mid to weak early game (depending on what you start up with, since everyone knows that zealots slaughter marines at low numbers, but marauders give you a slight leg-up now), a pretty strong mid-game (terrans have always been strong mid-game, since in bw it was tanks golis wraiths, but now in SC2 it's banshees vikings and tanks), and a mid to strong late game (thors and battlecruisers. the usual terran "it's big and takes forever to kill", however it should be noted that bcs got derped in the most interesting fashion). I have often found that terrans tend to win a lot since the campaign is mostly terran, and a lot of games are decided by the mid-game army fights, which terrans seem to excel at.
Zerg: Strong Early game (courtesy of ling rush and now roaches), a moderately weak mid-game (WHY BLIZZARD?? WHY DID YOU DERP HYDRALISKS SO!!!), but probably one of the nastiest late and end games out of the 3 (Brood-Lords+Corruptors+Ultralisks. Nuff said son). I also find that zerg are the worst when it comes to stationary defenses, and you will find a lot of people who are great at killing zerg since the majority of the heaviest fights in the campaign are against the zerg.
Protoss: I will say it right now, protoss were never my strong point exept in BW where you could mass goons and lots and win games. Pretty good early game (cannon rush, zealot push), a decent mid-game (not at the terran caliber, but stalkers and zealots are still a great combo, add on some colossi and immortals and you got a mean ground army there, PLUS they have void rays, which are addicting), and a pretty nasty late game (albeit toss have always been strong period, they aren't that horrid in sc2, since you have carriers, void rays, colossi, dts, high templar etc etc).
As bases go, the terrans have the most early game flexiblity since they can fly all around the map, and aren't restricted on structure placement like the protoss and zerg. And since they have siege tanks, they can turtle all day and give no craps whatsoever about being attacked from the ground, and they still have nasty AA ability with turrets, thors, and vikings. In addition, orbital commands make supplies no longer an issue, and mules give the terrans a crazy fast resource intake. Also the reactors and tech labs give you great variety on build-up. It's no longer follow a-b-c, you can now go a-a-b-a-c.
Zerg bases are... well... zerg bases. Creep now apprently is a requirement, since if you lose creep, the structures slowly start to die, and expanding creep requires creep tumours, even though overlords can now spew (yes, I mean SPEW) creep wherever they feel like it when you hit lair level. The zerg tech tree got tweaked a little, and their stationary defenses are terrible. And I mean TERRIBLE. However zerg have great army abilities, and with the new utility from queens larva spewing, they can build up very quickly. But again, due to garbage stationary defenses and the general thing of zerg units being kinda squishy, they tend to not do very well at very early game. Granted roaches gave them some survivability, but you're better off killing them early or trying to tech quickly. As resources go, the zerg are in the middle. Nothing fancy. You have drones.
The protoss are always fun because of the favorite line of ALL protoss players: You must construct additional Pylons. Protoss can build up fast, and since zealots are just strong as heck, you have good early and mid game. You fall off slightly late game but end game come back and win. Cuz you're the protoss. If you have good resource intake and can expo well and still fight, you're set. Add in the chronoboost from the nexus, and your early game isn't nearly as slow as it used to be. Plus you can cannon rush to A) Derp/piss off your opponents early on, and B) give you some early map control. Overall, the protoss haven't changed much. They took out dragoons and made DTs slower. If you played BW, you don't have to adjust much.
I know there are pros and other players who will laugh at what I just posted, but please, if you see any holes, by all means, tear them up and make them bigger, can always use a reality check.
Hey, I've been having troubles in PvZ where I can't abuse terrain using blink stalker, because I dont do damage and die to the roach counterattackil. For example, on Antiga I can blink up, snipe the roach warren, and blink back down. If he comes t kill my stalker I can blink back up into the main. On Ohana, I can't do this. I need another follow up from the FFE. I was thinking the double Stargate, getting some Voids to snipe the WR. I was needing a replay for this, and I cant find one. So if anyone has a GM level player doing this, please send it my way. Thanks.

Damn it!
This, along with scv pull is really, really hard to stop.

Can we discuss zerg ? I'm not even playing sc2 anymore but does anyone has a WR of zergs since the last patch ? I would be very curious, because everytime I turn on GSTL, a zerg is apparently demolishing everyone else.

And so it begins.
Better get the popcorn for this.
eh, intelligent discussions can be had. Zerg has been performing been phenomenally in the GSTL and it happened shortly after the queen + ol changes.
Ret has said helions are bad after the queen patch and when a player like Idra even says Terran may need a buff / queen change may have been too much, it definitely raises eyebrows.
Well, they wrecked MLG and are wrecking GSTL so far, but we also have to keep in mind that at Red Bull Battlegrounds it was a TvP finals with MC winning. While obviously the Koreans are the best of the best, we should take into account of other tournaments as well.
I do agree Hellions are pretty "Meh" these days, but I think that's affordable. If Terran gets a buff, we also have to keep in mind of TvP as well. That's why I think the only straight-up buff they can get is to the Raven, more specfically HSM.
Is there are simply programms, that creates overlay for SC2 with any image? Or tutorials, how to use Xplit or similar programms without streaming, but with overlaying image over game.
but srsly, blizzard is not doing any good for sc2. by improving queens and overlords they've actually DESTROYED my fav opening on small maps vs zerg - 10 pylon-10gate. It's not even a cheese just a way to put pressure and punish fast 2 or 3 bases... now its not viable so it's not like the game is imbalanced, but its BORING and it forces you to play expansion and only 1-2 strategies ALL the time (6gate immortals or 2-3 base colossi boring shit )
i'm wondering what the viability of a PvZ archon chargelot build is. after trying it on ladder in diamond league, it seems to hold up decently, but i'm not sure how well it works after that.
What do people think about adding a second Starport with Reactor in the mid-game no matter what and going heavy Medivac/Marine(/Viking, if he's going Colossus)?
In my mid masters(around 700 points) experience it works great against HT's because a heck of a lot of Medivacs heal so much HP that Storms are practically useless if you simply kite the Zealots. Colossus are easy to beat because of quad Viking production (obviously).
The down side is that you have to delay Ghosts or the second Ebay, and cut the one that isn't delayed respectively, since Medivacs and Vikings cost so much gas.

I'm sorry, but there is nothing true about what is said here. No smart Zerg would try fast 3 bases against a gateway first, one base play, and any attempt at punishing a Zerg for fast expo is a cheese. FE is standard ZvP.
There are far more styles than you apparently think there are. Watch some of the Protoss streams and you will see.
If you don't like what Blizzard is doing, go complain on the battle.net forums.
Honestly I recommend playing all of them for a while against AI. Give it about 10 games with each on a difficulty like Medium. See what one you enjoy more. I started as Protoss and switched to Zerg shortly after just because I enjoyed Zerg play style more.
Carrier based builds are peculiar, and strong. Unfortunately soon will no longer be possible.
I think it's hilarious that viable carrier based builds are coming out right before HotS removes them from the game. Same goes for defensive mamma ships.
But seriously, I think they have a place and like it was said, "You have to have a plan". You can't just say .. mm hm well he countered my Coloss and HT I will get carriers now. You have to be moving towards a late game goal of carriers.

I think the zerg buff was long needed. Zerg was underpowered before, but now that zergs are learning more builds and play styles,in combination with the overlord speed for scouting and new queen range to make it a little easier to defend in the early game zerg is now on par with the other races
In my extremely underqualified opinion the overlord boost was desperately needed but I was mildly surprised they went for ranged ground instead of air. However seeing it play out, I'm confident in the changes and their intention has translated into my games.

This is very true. Now that I've seen it in action it's become a bit more viable.

Queens, in my opinion were more used for early game defence instead of anti air. That goes without saying that the capability was quite welcomed.

This is targeted towards the Team Liquid site managers...
On your streaming lists, that show WhO is currently streaming, could you please add some kind of tag right beside their name as to Which race they play...
I understand it would be hard for the majority of the 100+ streamers that are on, to keep track of Which race these players play... but could you please add some kind of option where either the top players or some top percentage have a Symbol right beside their name?
I know that its possible to click their name, and then let it load.. but sometimes I WanT to watch a specific race and do not know much about the players.. including What race they play.

That's so cute ^^ Go to your profile and check the settings you can make it show the races of players that are streaming (right sidebar preferences).

So ... what happenes to terran now ?! What opening do we use ?
More hllions are not effective and prolongues siege tanks / 1 rax - FE , just puts zerg into macro mode or all-in / banchees delays your core army and doesn't denie the 3rd because buffed queens and hellions in small numbers can't deny creep anymore... and that s about all the viable buildings.
I go the 16 gas, naked factory reactor barracks into stim/shield/+1/6 hellion timing attack. There's a timing you can hit with some early marine/hellion if he goes early third that forces a few units.
I'm pretty sure you can find a Day9 Daily on it if you search/google "Illusion aggressive(or)aggression".
I blocked a player during a match (in the chat window) today, but when I watched the replay he continued to talk and apparently didn't notice it. I thought he should an error message or something?

1)Get the 1st syllable of your last name. If you can spell it differently then how it is usually traditionally done, the better.
2) Get the first letter or your first name and use it to for a second syllable together with 1 or 2 other letters.
Gin= a variation of the 1st syllable of my last name. Do= My first name begins with D.
GinDa GinDe GinDi GinDo <---- I Picked this one. GinDu
You can also flip it around. DoGin.

Also what does the TL community think about Carrier based Builds?
Personally I think there trash. Against Terran they aren't viable:
1) Terrans make marines. In BW hard counter to the BS 2 base carrier build was an MM Tank timing attack. Marines killed the interceptors, and the lack of splash resulted in the Protoss being crushed faced into the radioactive dirt of Korhal.
2) Vikings and AI. In BW Carriers would mess with unit AI. The new AI in SC2 is much easier to control and as a result units don't freak out as much. Not only that, but carriers had to be microed, a function that was removed in SC2. Also Terran have flying vikings, thus carriers can no longer abuse high ground.
ZvP. I don't really know, but it would really be hard to get to a critical mass of carriers. Also people forget that Interceptors don't heal, and can be FGed.
Carrier builds are generally only talked about in PvZ, and it can work. That doesn't mean it's the best thing, but it's neat to pull out once in a while. Harder to do it without getting scouted post buff, obviously, but hey, gotta be aware. It's not all about the carrier. Power point is that zergs could overreact and not know what to do against it, like a stronger version of the battlecruiser rush vs Zerg as well.
Pick your name to a random word that sounds cool, lol. This name makes no sense. I should change it sometime. You have to capitalize the right letters though, like Desktop vs DesktOp, see how op you look?
Is average points and win rate a useful stat for anyone? On SC2ranks it shows Z > P > T pretty clearly http://sc2ranks.com/stats/league/all/1/all and if you want to pull the KR only worthy server for analysis type argument, fortunately for me, it goes towards my favor http://sc2ranks.com/stats/league/fea/1/all I mean, I can get behind that average points and WR on ladder of all things doesn't add up to any form of argument, but 100 points discrepancy?
This coinciding with the ridiculous zerg streak we've been seeing these days, it's hard to believe that these zerg players actually got so ridiculously good so fast, or have been so ridiculously good and not performed like this before. The Zerg buff was probably just enough (more than enough???) to give them that push (whether it's in gameplay or perhaps more importantly, MINDSET) to perform really well on the stage. However I cannot deny that some terrans have just played,,, less than ideal :p
We can go back to a previous time, let' say 1.3.0, Terran sitting at 1236 globally and protoss at 1151. That's when TvP was basically unwinnable due to 1-1-1, right? :/ Heh I'm not sandbagging for my poor terran performance these days, D3 is has taken my time away ^^.
Enough of that, another topic is how potential hackers are reported.. We're just seeing threads with "___ hacking?"... It's not a great method I think because the thread itself gives people evidence. I think the link to the replay should be given, and the analysis spoilered so that people who intend to actually analyze the replay and not bandwagon on the shitstorm can do it without prior bias. I mean just reading one opinion can change how people approach a topic. What say you?
btw check MKP's twitter, "Z>>>>>>>>>P>T, but of course, he's Terran so take it however you wish, jest or qq).
I figure that when the May 2012 stats come out people are just going to say T still imba. But then people will be saying all sorts of things won't they.
EDIT: feelin a bit iffy on touching balance though. I mean no harm or offense ._.

1.) To pick a race - This is really important and a lot of people struggle to find what race they like. The best way is to go with whats fun! Seems simple I know, but it is a game after all! If you play terran because a ton of people on TL tell you they are op and you play them, but hate them - you won't have fun. I suggest playing all 3 races until you find the one you enjoy the most, and then you have your answer!
2.) A name. A name is what people see and identify you with and it is also very important. Again this isn't something that comes easy to a lot of people. You have to find something that you like. Sometimes it can be something very simple (people use names of items around them like Nestea did, or think of a product or thing they like or think is cool, like Jinro) Find something that calls to you, that you can be like "yeah, that's me".
As for my name well uhmm it's just kinda random, I liked it and it stuck :D

My name used to be Anti-Hero. Came from a Skateboard company. Creegz came from my high school nickname. My real name being Craig. Came from my friend who added an S on the end of my name one day, and it just stuck from Craigs to my other friend making it simpler to pronounce saying Creegz one day. It stuck from grade 10 to now, I'm 22 now.
Did Spades hack, or didn't he? I don't have the time to read through the whole thread to have my own opinion on it. I read, that PainUser said that he hacked. He seems to be a reasonable and trustworthy person. I just don't get it. Is there still doubt left for those who studied the replays?
Regardless of whether or not he did, one pattern I am noticing is that people tend to throw everything out of proportion, it's not like he won major tournaments by hacking. Realistically he may have cheated a couple people out of a few dollars, but nothing substantial.

Greetings TeamLiquid. I'm new to TeamLiquid, but all the big time casters (Day9, psy, Destiny, etc) have all refered to this site as the "heart of the starcraft community" so I figured I'd join the community and get to know the people. So far most of what I know about the SC2 community is what is published on YouTube.
Anyway, I'm a big fan of the Zerg (though they are a pain in the ass to get good with). On that note, I've got a few questions.
I've been having troubles knowing what to look for when scouting. I don't play terran and toss that much, and when I float my overlord in an opponents base at 6 minutes, I really don't know what I'm looking at and need to prepare for. I'm sure this topic has been discussed before, so can anyone point me in the general direction?
I havn't played SC2 in about 6 months, has anything major changed since last year?
anyway, good to be back to SC2, and I hope I can make a few contacts to game with here.
As a lower league Zerg player, my statements have to be taken with a grain of salt, but what I look for when scouting is when I'm against Terran and I see Gas by the time the barracks is completed, I can expect 1 of two things, banshees, or most likely, a quick factory into a few hellions to harass, in this case of hellions, make a couple spine crawlers and an extra queen. If I see another rax go down, get ready for marines, they will likely make siege tanks after a 3rd or 4th barracks, if they aren't doing much and it looks like they're walling the second a bit, expect a fast command center, make lings, attack and keep pressure on them as they will have minimal units.
Against protoss, gas is almost standard at around 12 supply, so one gate, gas goes down, but if they go no gas and make a forge outside their base, check for pylons at your base in case of cannon rush, but the usual approach to a forge outside the base is an attempt to forge fast expand (FFE). In this case, get to 3 bases and make roaches, do it FAST before their first push comes. Of course as Zerg you want to ALWAYS be at least one base ahead in mining. Push either of these races hard, keep pressure, but do not sacrifice any economy in doing so, just keep econ up and with spare larvae keep making units. Terran, also good practice as they are slower moving, move all of the overlords around the map for vision, they will be your greatest tool. GLHF
Hey, not sure if its the correct thread to ask this but id figure it would do no harm if i post it here, Basically i am trying to find a "casual" game for this summer to occupy my off time with while im working on something productive, last summer i found myself simply playing sc2 way to much and improving little... kinda getting sucked up and playing 2-5 hours per day for about 1 and a half months, kinda annoying and pointless if you are not in the "mind set" to improve and you are in the worst period balance wise that your race has ever faced . Point is, i will try not to touch the ladder this summer. But i saw the Hots beta at MLG Anahime and it seemed like a really fun thing to do this summer, and since its constantly changing and ladder will likely reset its likely i won't get frustrated/overplay it. Sadly, i am not sure if i will be able to get a beta key for it... so i would like a "veteran" that has played the previous blizzard rts betas to tell me if they actually have any program to give beta keys to highly ranked players on ladder ? Or will it simply be randoms + pros. I Know this is kinda of a stupid question but i really want to decide if i will actually put 60-100$ into some games to play this summer or if i have high chances at the beta.

I havn't played SC2 in about 6 months, has anything major changed since last year?
anyway, good to be back to SC2, and I hope I can make a few contacts to game with here.
there are several different unit composition, muta has kind of died out. mass upgraded Ling infestor Roach ling infestor Lings baneling infestor
Late game: ling infestors corruptor and broodlords Or Mass upgrade ling infestors into quick ultras
The reason for this is that it is safer to go 15 hatch now and terran also plays greedier to get upgrade marines, so muta cannot do as much damage anymore. The new zerg deathball requires lings with upgrades and infestors, therefore infestors style give a very nice transition into quick hive play. 13 mins for fast hive into quick ultras.
Terran tends to use factory for hellions to control creep spread and delay third but this is now kind of easy to deal with since queen has the buff. the transition from terran could be: quick double CC, mass hellions marauders all in, blueflame hellions and stim marines, banshee into mech play.
Tanks are also less common now, marauder marine medivac are more popular
A few months ago, muta seems to be quite popular and OP until toss becomes better at defending it. Now in general, dealing with FFE toss, you usually go for the stephano style max roaches (quick 3rd, 6:20 gas, roach warren etc) because it gives good defense against any gateway all in and also let you kill toss if he has small army and took a super fast 3rd. almost all toss goes for FFE nowadays. Gateway openings are really rare and hasn't changed since 6 months ago. late game properly composition: roach spines broodlords and infestors.
position your army well, the only way toss can beat this is either you spread the broodlords too thin and got sniped or mothership landed a vortex. try to get burrow and neural parasite if you ever see a mothership, you really cannot allow him to do an archon toilet.
As for scouting: Terran- no gas = either all in (quite unlikely nowadays because of the larger map size) or 1 rax FE or just 15 CC like a boss 1 gas = quick hellions mostly 2 gas = very rare, most likely banshee
Protoss- FFE mostly, the number of gas he takes varies different kind of strategies. Like 4 gas means tech heavy push like 3immortal sentries gateway warp prism push etc. 2 gas mostly mean 6/7/8 gate all in Gateway opening could mean a very possible 4 gating or if he took 2 gas, DT or stargate. Go gas steal if he is opening gateway.
Great MLG tourney so far. Can't wait for the final day to start. There's going to be alot of games to look over when the replays are released, especially in the open bracket and the earlier games of the US nationals. I should really go wash those dishes in the sink right now but...oh there's another game I haven't watched yet.

Dude I'm in the same boat, i have dishes to do, but I'm just gonna go to a Barcraft and then wash em later.
Trying to keep up with the NA scene, some names just kind of came out of nowhere to me, and I thought I was relatively up to date with the players lol. Was wondering if anyone could say more on who they are o.o
In GM... #13 NMxSouL - well, clearly on NMx, but who the heck is SouL? Must be new account since it only has 144 wins #15 LgNHorNyBnT - similar, obviously on Lgn, but who is hornybnt? Does he have a better known aka? #29 NpPpSomeNoob - who? used to be pretty low ranked, suddenly high gm with sick win-loss #39 NMxMoMo - NMx appears to have more than 1 protoss I don't recall hearing about xD seems to be consistently good though in past season as well
I saw a video posted here a few months ago from youtube that like, showed the comparison of the quality of writing between BW's campaign and SC2's. Shit was amazing, but I can't for the life of me find it through this search or youtubes or googles....does anyone happen to have that? ;_;

I don't know about that... See YellOw Vs. YellOw, both BW progamers
Oh god and they both play zerg..... that makes it even worse!
Everybody seems to be really manner on the ladder today. Especially the zergs. A few GG WPs, and even one guy who complimented my holding of his 8 pool and then using blink+obs+high ground warpin to bypass his spine wall.
Im just getting into watching SC2 as an esport and love it! Im just sometimes having problems on whats going on? and advice? what youtube vids to watch or what not or should I just keep watching games? Also cant play until I get a new comp.
Hey guys im new to SC2 having played about 40 games on ladder 1v1 and about 60 2v2, through this time Ive tried terran, protoss and settled on zerg. Something I've noticed is that no matter how much of the map I control in terms of bases (3 at saturation) I can't work out for the life of me how to take down a 1 or 2 base tank defence Terran.
If I try going in the sneaky way through the back they tend to have missile turrets up and when I come knocking at the front door with gateway units or roach/lings Im obliterated. Repeat this process a few times and then they push out and win usually.
Where should I look to defeat this?
Oh and Im bronze 1v1, silver 2v2 so yes, I am bad at games.
Are phones allowed in the player booths? Or what is or is not permitted in player booths?
What if someone has a device that vibrates if there is an imminent all-in and some device is used to signal the player of this all-in?
It just seems that if money is on the line, people may employ less than honest methods to win. There's been a lot of map hacking awareness recently, and I think it's a symptom of Blizzard not taking more swift action against these players. Just out of curiousity, why isn't Blizzard taking more swift action? Are they afraid of some legal basis since these map hacking claims can be at most tenuous, even if many good players can pretty conclusively decide someone is hacking?

I played ladder today for the first time since before the patch last season whereupon I held the rank 1 master spot. All of my matches today were against Zergs and I have to say that queen range buff was a lot stronger than I thought it would be. I guess 2 rax is easily defended now. Like really easily defended.
I'm starting to wonder what race distribution we will have in Hots.

Thanks for this. I was looking for that interview.
I have this "problem" where I literally cannot play Starcraft within the first like 3-4 hours after waking up. I've had a shower, worked out, eat foot, went shopping, drank an energy drink, but no matter what I just can't focus. I feel slow, and when I try to play the game I start to feel light headed.
Weird.
Also, they need to remove the random crutch. As Protoss getting paired against a random who plays zerg on a 4 player map is basically auto loss. I have to go 1 gate sentry expand and the zerg just gets three bases like normal, yet my economy is so delayed. I think from now all I'll just go like double proxy stargate or proxy DT. I hate cheesing but it's literally pointless to play a straight up game with them.
"Random Crutch?" Do you mean the race showing as Random in loading screen? He picked random, that's his race, it doesn't tell him what he gets until he sees it, it's not really an advantage, you just need to prepare for the worst and hope for the best honestly. I play Zerg, so seeing Random and showing Zerg usually gives the Random player a chance of being Zerg and six pooling me knowing I have little to no defense. I just prepare for it by obscuring my build enough to drop a spine crawler early, then proceeding normally. It shouldn't be a problem with adequate scouting. If you're really unsure, send two scouts, sacrifices a bit of econ, but it's a great help. My recommendation would be send second scout after first scout reaches first starting position you scout, then send it to the other one so the last two get scouted same time.

Yes it is. He knows what I'm playing and can work his build accordingly. I don't what what he is playing, have to use a sub-optimal build so I don't auto lose if he's not zerg, and have to sacrifice economy early game. A random players has none of this.
As a Protoss player, where you put your first pylon is hugely important. There's no way to scout before you lay that down, unless you scout incredibly early and therefore put yourself really far behind.
One of the nice things about playing Terran was not having to worry about random because marines and CC's are good vs everything. (Except banelings, fuck banelings).
When random, find a generic "all race" build and run with it. Random isn't a crutch dude. He has to work a strategy from the second the game starts, he's already at a disadvantage as he doesn't have a set plan when he sees Protoss like you could when you see Random. Build a Forge and a Cannon instead of the second Gateway, delay the gateway units a minute or so to make a cannon. That or my scouting technique which I do as Zerg, and it doesn't sacrifice much economy.

People posting like this must be in bronze league.
You think people actually decide their build and make important decisions during the loading screen?
No, if you know what you're doing (and if you're in diamond you probably do), you know exactly what build you're doing as soon as you see what the matchup is. I play all three races during the same season (just not random), so I know how this works. There is a 2-3 minute window where my opponent cant decide their build and plan accordingly that I cannot.
Developing a "catch-all" build for each matchup is impossible, since going 1 gate expo vs protoss gets your killed, going FFE against Terran/Protoss gets you killed, and going for 3 gate expo puts you incredibly behind vs Z/T. The only thing you can really do is fucking 4gate or go DT's. You can't even just go stargate because Terran automatically beats you and Stargate vs Protoss is really coin flippy.
The issue is, is that doing a fast expanding (FFE or Nexus first) will basically get you killed in anything but vZ, but if you go gateway expand vZ you're fucking dead unless you're just way better than your opponent. The only thing you can do is hope he is dumb and all ins your. Or just cheese.
I don't mean a full catch all build, just a simple opener that's versatile that gives you some sort of flexibility. That is the key to dealing with anything unpredictable, find some point where you can be flexible, scouting a bit early will give you the same information he will receive from doing the same to you. All you need to really do is identify he's random, and just expect more than "standard" openers or cheese from the opponent. That alone should give you adequate time to get to at least mid game. He's random, he doesn't just flat out get the upper hand. Knowing the opponents race right away isn't a HUGE deal. All you need to do is figure out what works for you to handle the VERY early game from everything, and then scout earlier to transition appropriately into something more comfortable.
You can FFE vs Terran, have you seen FXOz's build in the GSL vs Forgg set 2? Neat build. Protoss... I don't know. When I random I just announce my race but obviously the opponent doesn't have to believe me.

You keep talking in generalities but the issue is, the moment I put my first pylon down, I've committed to a build. There's no way to scout what race my opponent is by that point. I drop the pylon near the top of my ramp so I can wall in if need be, but this puts me at a disadvantage is every thing but PvZ since my builds can be easily sniped and get in the way.
Anything that isn't FFE or Nexus first is an auto loss if you play a zerg who goes 3 hatch no gas unless you cheese or one base all in. You're just too far behind. There's a reason why every pro ever goes FFE.

I hate that build. It's one of those things that worked a few times because people weren't used to it, but it's actually pretty dumb.
Oz does crazy shit all the time, the dude will go Nexus first in PvP. He's not somebody I'd ever try to copy a build from.
I've noticed people on ladder have become increasingly BM. Dunno if it's just me, but if not, these guys are making SC2 look bad. And LoL as an opponent, this isn't good for SC2's future. Blizzard should be more active in banning sad kids.

I was getting annoyed by this too and it's easier to just say ghlf and then hit f11 to block chats from your opponent. It takes away most of the irritation. Sadly not really an SC2-specific thing though. Got plenty of BM in BW, Wc3 and espeically HoN and LoL is not that much nicer. Just an internet thing.

yeah it really is just an internet thing. All online games are BM. Starcraft is definitely one of the least shitty communities for sure though. It's all stemmed from the anonymous nature of the interweb. Just gotta relax and remember, they were probably abused as children, or were neglected. In any event, it means nothing coming from a faceless person.
At about 1000 wins on League of Legends and about 200 ranked games I can firmly say that SC2s community is far in advance of LoLs when it comes to manners. I've had a few angry people but that's to be expected, ever game of LoL unless you're in your 5v5 premade team, suffers from one guy being really mad and explaining why his failure is everyone elses fault.
I'd have to strongly disagree that ladder seems rude after coming from that.
Do you guys thing there is need for another league between masters and GM? Has this ever been brought up? I think the skill between a newly promoted masters and a top master player is far to big.

Nope. The skill difference is big because masters is essentially the ceiling, going much beyond what most other leagues would cut off MMR at for a promotion. If you create a new league, it'd simply happen in that one instead. The skill level of masters (and subsequently all leagues) would plummet, being that masters players would be promoted out leaving space for more, less skilled diamonds to take their place.
It'll probably take a few years but eventually the other leagues will catch up to masters and the skill differences will shrink.

Got matched vs a bronze dude with a career total of 45 wins. Im in silver with a career total of 1174 wins (not all 1v1 ofc).
My upponent lost 7 out of 10 games lately while I had 7 wins 3 losses. This must mean that his mmr was declining while mine was on the way up.
Needless to say I think he had a snowball's chance in hell to win that game. And yes, he melted in 30 seconds from my little roach push @11 minutes.
What are your thoughts on matchmaking lately? My feeling is that its not as good as it used to be, there are a little too many of these games where you win easy peasy OR get roflstomped by a perfect timing push from a dude macroing like a boss. Frankly, Im getting a little upset and might even consider playing D3 for a while until that infamous expansion is released...
Short question that doesn't deserve it's own thread: Why am I matched up against favored people like 50% of the time now, and I don't mean slightly favored which is basically the other 50%?
Don't get me wrong I'm loving it, getting my ass handed to me but the better the opponent the faster I'll improve. low-mid masters EU zerg if it matters at all.

I think it's fine anywhere but the extremes. bronze/low silver or high master/grandmaster. For me working my way up from gold to master matchmaking seems to keep up brilliantly, one of the redeeming qualities of bnet 2.0

However it does only work INGAME, not in the chat channels or search etc. It also works fine in windows (windows 7 ultimate 64-bit, korean language pack installed).
Does anyone know how to fix it so that i also write hangul in the chat channels????
2. Why was sentry's damage nerfed in the past? Shouldn't this change be reverted now?
I don't know the reason it was nerfed, but is there really a pressing need for it to be increased? I think the sentry is probably fine where it is.
Dunno man. I'd be happy to hear the official reasoning about that. I sometimes don't understand why Blizzard goes +2 instead of +1 to see how it is like, then adjust if needed. E.g. sentry's old damage or queen's new range.

same set up here, do you have the toggles hotkeyed? sometimes they turn off and need to be turned back on. between input languages left alt+shift switch input language left alt + shift switch keyboard layout ctrl + shift (i dont think mine is default, check your settings)
on task bar: off - EN on - KO (earth) 가 (chinese) and right alt button to toggle between english/korean when keyboard layout is switched it'll say KO (keyboard) instead of above
so when it doesnt work i mess around with shift+alt and ctrl+shift until it works

Which key do you press/which move do you make as zerg, when you encounter the following:
You wanna attack a mining base from a terran with many lings. He has many SVCs and a planetary there. You attack the PF and the SCVs try to repair it. Now you wanna attack the SCV to at least do some economical damage to him.
How do you do it? I mean, when you just a-move, the lings try to attack the PF as their primary target (don't they?) but when you individually click and attack each SCV it becomes inefficient, cause most of the lings will run around not attacking anything.
So how can you make them lings attack many SCVs as possible?
why do so many god damn NA players all-in and BM ? I'm top masters, I regularly face the top of the top and I'm still just constantly having people go all-in and BM me when it works or doesn't work. WHY!?!?!?!?!?
Makes this game incredibly frustrating and not fun, and turns me into a huge whiner.

on task bar: off - EN on - KO (earth) 가 (chinese) and right alt button to toggle between english/korean when keyboard layout is switched it'll say KO (keyboard) instead of above
so when it doesnt work i mess around with shift+alt and ctrl+shift until it works
yea i already checked the hotkeys and i also see all the symbols down right etc and its all fine in windows. I can change between german, english, korean (keyboard/earth, 가 /A) with hotkeys and i understand all the differences and can use them in windows.
But still in the starcraft chat channel there is even this little "A" or "가 " on the right side of the line where you enter the text. and i can also switch between german/english/korean, but only german and english layout works perfectly. Korean (keyboard) gives me english layout and Korean (earth) gives me NOTHING when i type. Just stays empty.
Kas, Stephano, Sase, Nerchio, Naniwa, Socke, Thorzain, Demuslim, Sen, and Huk. In no particular order, also picking a top 10 is really hard, since it has to be changed after each major event.
I'd like to ask, am I the only one who thinks that dubstep "music" is played too much on SC2 streams (daily streams, player streams, etc). I am not fond of dubstep, but I could just be the odd out of the bunch in regard of music taste (I listen to many genres I just dislike that dubstep sounds like a tin-barrel rolling down stairs).
I agree, the general music taste of the average SC2 streamer is horrendous. I'd prefer they just do commentary.
It's always nice when they play something you like though, even better when they play something you like and you've never heard it before. Learning Sc2 and discovering new music!
I dream of a day where twitch.tv has seperate entities for the music and the other sound on stream. That way I can watch say Losira with game sound but without his terrible terrible music.

Yep, I usually mute the sound and listen to my own music. I don't like dubstep that much ;/
I've been wanting to watch either the GIGABYTE ESPORTS LAN Invitational (not my intentional use of caps, I'm just following Liquipedia) or Dreamhack. In my six months of watching LANs I've yet to see either of these prodigious events. Any recommendations?
I know this is going to sounds a bit crazy, but hear me out.
Make protoss warp ins at pylons cost energy on the nexus, you can warp in units at a nexus cost free. What would this do you might ask....
1. Fix PvP allowing the defender to have an advantage by being able to chronoboost gateways where the aggressive player cannot.
2. No more forcefields. I believe FF was added to the game because pvp was broken - no defenders advantage. If there is no FF protoss gateway units could actually be good units before upgrades (Stalkers/Zealots) - I think this would help balance PvT making protoss and terran more equal in the early game, and changing the power of warp in pylons dramatically. FF has always been the bane of zerg. No FF we could see a lot more variety of strategy in the matchup because units like banelings, zerglings become more powerful. Also lowers the effectiveness of units like collosus.
3. Great synergy with new unit mothership core (recharge energy on nexus)
- I'm a protoss player so don't tell me this is a balance whine, just tired of people trying to take legitimate wins away from me because i play with the "broken race" . /rant

I'm sorry, but this is not possible. A protoss cannot survive 7 minutes without forcefields, gate units sucks against stimmed MM and ling roach or just mass ling allin wihout FF and guardian shield.. if you want to remove the ff, give a new gate unit to protoss and maybe we can discuss it.
I really hope that blizzard wants to remove those stupid ability like FF or stupid units like colossi/roaches/marauders.. but this won't happens.

I said buff gateway units if you read #2 thoroughly. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. If PvP is balanced, then no FF --> buff protoss gateway units so they can stand up against ling roach, or MM.
Alright, I've been out of the scene for ages and I'm just slowly getting back into it now. I have to know, who are considered the best players in the world right now?
When I left, MMA/Mvp were the best terrans, DongRaeGu was the best zerg, and the best protoss was undecided, but Oz was a contender. I know that pretty soon after I left, MKP shot right up, and I know Squirtle and DongRaeGu have done very well for themselves as well.
So how do things stand right now? Feels so weird not being sure who the best players are. =P

Marineking and DongRaeGu are the best terran and zerg players right now if you ask me, they always place high in every tournament. DRG is probably the best of all right now.
Protoss is harder to pick one, although Squirtle is a good candidate. But I have a feeling he has had his peak. Genius apparently played well in GSL just recently, but he's teamless now, that drags him down... Naniwa of course is really, really good, but not in PvZ... Haven't seen Oz that much, he is probably up there still, he is in code S after all.
You can pretty much watch the GSL standings this far, and draw conslusions from that

Everytime he plays MKP looks amazing, but it was MVP who won the last GSL, against Squirtle. DRG is still probably the best Zerg, he had a pretty poor GSL last season but at MLG he looked amazing. Squirtle may be the best Toss but it's still a toss up (wahey) really between him, Parting, Genius, MC and maybe even Creator, in my opinion.
In terms of foreigners, Stephano and Naniwa are the two who actually make stuff happen. Recently Sase and Socke have been turning heads, Vibe won the US nationals, and Thorzain is in the GSL.
Surprising runs... Alicia got 2nd at MLG, and no one thought Alicia was a particularly remarkable Protoss. Sase got 4th, straight from the open bracket. Keen's been playing well.
People who were hyped up a lot but aren't really delivering at the moment... Nestea and MMA are the big Koreans, there have been like no remarkable US players in any tournament since forever. Huk's results haven't been great lately either (though I consider him a favourite to win DreamHack).

That's pretty much it right now.
Thanks very much guys! I actually forgot about Parting and Creator when I made my original post. Glad that DRG is still the best Zerg too. =)
Thanks again for the surprisingly detailed answers.
I've been playing terran for the past month or so. Have been a spectator since the beta and just recently got a copy. I thought terran was a cool race and decided to use it. I have realized that I think zerg would fit me better. I am a macro player and don't do much aggression, but like big timing pushes that just over power my opponent. Do you think I should switch over to zerg?

Parting is really good right now IMO. He might not have placed as high as Oz or Squirtle in recent events, but he's great.

You cannot buff heavily gate units, because of the warp mechanic. In PvT late scenario zealots are already too strong when u can afford to warp 20 zea in front of your army, imagine if they will be buffed (a lot).
So u have to remove sentry and warp, someone said BroodWar?
Guys, where can I find a list of tab priority for each race? Like when there are multiple unit types selected, and I tab continuously, what unit type would I end up selecting first, then second, third, etc...
Guys,am i the only one experiencing low frame rate during big battles on Daybreak? I used to have the same issue on Metropolis btw, only a bit worse actually.. I am not going to QQ about loosing on that map but defenetily some battle could have turned out differentely(For example not sieging on time or landing the EMPs on empty spaces because the the frame just "skipped"and the army already positioned elsewhere ect.) BTW i already play on the lowest graphics even tough my PC should be able to run on high(played the campaing at the begining on high).Anyway just wondering..(And my Internet connection is 30mb with about 11-15 mls so that should not be the case either)
So how can you make them lings attack many SCVs as possible?
... you can put them on hold position and they'll only attack whatever is in range but if you insist on wasting your zerglings trying to kill a PF then use micro to target scvs. ... just make banelings, throwing pure ling at a PF is a stupid waste 4 out of 5 times. (the exceptions being like, 3/3 cracklings or you just want to instantly free up supply)
This post sounds shitty but there's no real trick to killing a PF with zerglings. It's inefficient and you should only do it if you have a massive economy/unit advantage over your opponent or theres no scvs to repair. If I saw a PF at a 3rd undefended, I would use zerglings and mutas or zerglings and infestors or zerglings banelings and muta or infestor to kill the scvs immediately then burn down the PF as fast as possible.

My best advice would be to have different unit types on different hotkeys. Diamond Protoss and Platinum Zerg here, so, these are my hotkeys: 1 - Zerglings(vT/vP early-mid game)/Brood Lords(vP) 2 - Banelings(vT)/Roaches (vP/vT depending if he's Mech or not) 3 - Mutalisks/Brood Lords(vT)/Ultralisks(vT)/Roaches(vT) 4 - Infestors Caps Lock - Ultralisk(vT if I have Brood Lords out)/Mutalisks(harass)/Corrupters
As Protoss:
1 - Zealots/Sentries/DTs 2 - Stalkers/Void Ray 3 - Immortals/Colossi/Archons 4 - High Templar/Mothership Caps Lock - Phoenix

You want to get in his mineral line (half way from the PF and Minerals) towards his minerals and press H (or whatever your Hold Position keybind is). Zerglings will just attack what is in their attack range and will not attack the PF, as it has a bigger aggro? level than mining SCVs. Basically, this is what it looks like:

Why do you split your army in to 5 different groups...? Zealot, Sentry, Stalker, Immortal, Colossi, Archon can all go into one. Your spellcaster unit should be in a different group. And you might need a third group for harass/air units.

I usually do so for the positioning. Especially with Colossi and Vikings/Corrupters out, as I tried to stutter-step with Colossi because they will eventually get taken out, and it is actually 4 control groups. Zealots and Sentries are always in the same control group, spell casters are always on 4 for me and harassing is Caps Lock.

I can go into a unit tester and find out in 1 minute, or I can tell you theres nothing stopping you from trying it yourself. Find a custom game unit tester. It'll save you 5 minutes from playing a melee game.
Other then that, theres no list that I know of. But theres so few units that actually have tab priority it'd only take you 10 minutes tops.

If you're trying to reach gold and beyond, then all you really have to do is watch Zerg replays and pay attention to what they do.. And you should have no problem reaching Gold at the minimum in a relatively short amount of time.
How do protosses deal with the extremely flexible zerg. I find it hard to deal with when and where the zerg produces what.
If he makes a round of extra units or 2 or pure drones. Mass roach spam kills me because I can't trade well. If I go immortals blindly they go muta ling on me...
Any good advice on a flexible BO?
I know a lot of stargate openers, the 2 gate after forge fe the fourgate after ffe and other gate builds as well.

Dont attack a planetairy with lings. You could use banelings maybe since they do dmg instantly. But I think to take down a PF you need Ultra or BL. And seeing how PF is usually the 4th base, try to take down the other 3 xD

Even the pros don't use so many controlgroups for units. Positioning is done by boxselecting and moving the units, not by control groups.

Diamond Protoss and Platinum Zerg here, so, these are my hotkeys: 1 - Zerglings(vT/vP early-mid game)/Brood Lords(vP) 2 - Banelings(vT)/Roaches (vP/vT depending if he's Mech or not) 3 - Mutalisks/Brood Lords(vT)/Ultralisks(vT)/Roaches(vT) 4 - Infestors Caps Lock - Ultralisk(vT if I have Brood Lords out)/Mutalisks(harass)/Corrupters
As Protoss:
1 - Zealots/Sentries/DTs 2 - Stalkers/Void Ray 3 - Immortals/Colossi/Archons 4 - High Templar/Mothership Caps Lock - Phoenix
Even the pros don't use so many controlgroups for units. Positioning is done by boxselecting and moving the units, not by control groups.
Aye, but we all know if there are ~15 Vikings out, your Colossi are going down sooner or later, I like to have them on a control group in case I have to FF/move Zealots etc.
Hi everyone, first post So, i discovered an interesting bug yesterday, where a probe could pass through a complete wall-off by building a pylon next to it in a corner. I also posted this in the BNet forums, but so far nobody seems interested. BNet Forum link
I tested this bug more today, and it can be reproduced and even used in standard wall-ins for PvZ, for example if your scouting probe is killed on Metropolis:
So, this only works for 2x2 buildings, the probe cannot go through a gateway, and sometimes you have to build a gateway in order for the probe to get through, somtimes a pylon is enough.
Is this a known bug or am i the first to find this?

If I understand correctly, this has been known for a while and even used as a strategy back when you could block ramps with 2 pylons:
Actually its a bit different, considering that in my case the probe jumps over an entire 2-space building and not just through an edge of this ramp-wall in. Also this works on flat terrain, it doesnt need a feature like a ramp.
but the principle is the same, i suspect there are more pathing glitches in the game considering how complex it is.
Can anyone refer me to Sase's PvZ Immortal/Sentry build which has apparently revolutionized PvZ play on the ladder? I can only seem to find people referring to it.
With the prominence of the GM Maphackers rising thread, so many maphack accusations flying around the ladder. Wish people would realize how serious that kind of thing is. I don't mind being called terrible, I mean I AM terrible, but to be honest it really pisses me off when people just accuse any sort of game sense or even dumb luck as proof you are cheating...
Does anyone know if going 14 pool 14 gas then 16 hatch good for zvz? I'm high diamond and I've been trying this build, it really helps vs early ling bling aggresion almost 100% win if they go ling bling aggression, however If they're passive it hurts your economy somewhat because you don't get the queen as early since you're getting the expo. I don't know what would be a better, safe, fast expand build for zvz?
I was away for the duration of Dreamhack, so can some kind individual give me the link for the VOD page so that I can start watching em ? Much appreciated.

This has been around since long before sc2 but i've never seen it affect a sc2 progame, or any sc2 game for that matter... it factored in to a couple of BW matches though idk where to find the VODs
Hey anyone know where I can find SC2 pro gamer posters. It looks like JP has some on his wall but I can't find any pro gamer posters via google search. Anyone know where they can be found? Korean and foreign posters would be cool. Thanks!
On June 22 2012 16:46 enemy2010 wrote: Why doesn't every protoss just put a pylon at the zergs natural and 3rd at the start of the game in a ZvP?
That delays their bases so much, that the toss simply can throw his 2base alll-in at him and will win every single damn time.
And I don't see any way to beat this. And an investment of two pylons is NOTHING, but I can lose you the game as zerg right there.
Because then you're already 200 minerals behind while your opponent just has slight delayed timings on his expansions, and 200 minerals in the early game is quite a lot.

Do you guys know of any other way than ladder to practice? It seems to me that I never get any real practice because I always run into someone that cheeses or just does stupid things.

I just saw another Protoss player storm his own Zealots again. Any reason why people don't right click their HTs away to cancel the storm if they take too long to cast it?
It seems like the more I play the worse I get. I'm working hard to improve, practicing builds, taking notes, watching replays of others and myself. I was playing and beating low masters and now I can barely hold my own vs low diamonds. I seem to get worse and worse and I don't get why? Has anybody else gone through something like this? And I don't mean in one day of tilting. I mean over the past couple weeks its been like this. Before that I haven't played the game consistently since it game out due to life preventing me from playing. Now that I can play I'm having a horrible time.

A lot of the following you may already be doing. But it's all I can think of offhand.
1. You're distracted in your personal life. Even if you are pretty good at keeping your head in the game, even trivial concerns can mess with your head. For example, you may feel that more free time is good, but it could be that just the change in your schedule is causing you subtle stress. Solution - try to make a regular schedule and stick to it, wake up at regular times, eat at regular times, exercise at regular times, take breaks at regular times. Over time, sticking to the schedule should really help. Also, try to eat healthy and have some hot food every day that isn't a Hot Pocket. I mean, I eat those things myself, but they WILL mess you up after a while. (At least I feel messed up, whee! No, just kidding) Regular aerobic exercise is important. If your body is suffering, your mind will slow down, and your game will suffer.
2. You're working too hard at SC2. Working on the same thing forces your brain into repetitive patterns. Once you get used to repetition, your response time gets cut. Imagine if you're supposed to press a button every time you see a flashing light. The first 20 times the light flashes, your responses will be OK. If the light suddenly doesn't flash at the usual time, you may catch yourself. But 400 flashes in, if you've been pressing the button really regularly and quickly, and suddenly the light skips a beat, odds are you'll have hit that button. Solution - take a break, then get back to it. "Having a horrible time"? Hm. Definitely break time.
3. You're mindgaming yourself. Suppose you just watched a bunch of MarineKing replays. Before you studied timings and had more understanding of the game, you couldn't at all deal with someone like MarineKing. You would just push, timing, aggro, whatever, because that's all you knew. No structure.
But now you have a better idea of what you're doing, so you become - not afraid, but "cautious". Or you try to adopt MarineKing's style and fail. Or both. Either way, you lose more.
If you're playing better (i.e. thinking about MarineKing), why would you lose more?
Say you're trying to defend against MarineKing in your head. You know his style so well. But you know you can't handle him. So you play defensively. But defense isn't how you win. It's just how you lose more slowly. Before, you were pushing, you were testing, you had opportunities to win. Even if you're a bit more passive now than you were before you started study, that small difference in passivity makes a BIG dfiference in terms of winning.
Or say you're trying to attack like MarineKing, play like MarineKing, scout like MarineKing. But little things add up. Suppose MarineKing's micro lets him lose 2 marines, where you lose 8. Suppose MarineKing keeps 4 Marines at the ramp between his main and natural to deal with zergling runthrough, but you need 6, because you don't have his skill level. Suppose MarineKing only builds 1 bunker where you need 2. Just those few small differences means a difference of 500 minerals already. That's 10 Marines, a whole attack force. This also easily happens if you're trying to emulate a pro, but don't quite have the same skills to match.
Then, there's little changes players sometimes make to try to improve on MarineKing. Oh, it sounds silly, I know. Or maybe you could say players don't understand the importance of some moves? Anyways, sometimes I watch replays in which there's a crucial Xel'Naga tower at a crucial juncture, and a player just simply doesn't even try to take control of it. True, MarineKing's minimap awareness may mean he just sees things comings and runs the Marine away, keeping his investment, while a player without the same awareness might just lose the marine. But it isn't a good solution to just not use the Xel'Naga at all to try to preserve resources. Nor is it a good solution to lose a marine. Proper information is an essential part of pro player style - in this case, a player just has to do what they CAN do, hopefully practicing to increase minimap awareness.
Solution - play a few games intentionally "wrong" in which you don't try to copy anyone, and you don't try to keep your mind on all the possibilities. Aggro/scout as much as possible and for the entire game keep an eye on the minimap. (Try looking MOSTLY at the minimap and looking up at the screen as little as possible.) By this I don't mean "possible" like your normal game. At every moment, you should either be attacking or running away from things that are actively chasing your army. Preferably, you should be making constant multiprong attacks and retreats for the entire game.
The goal isn't to win. The goal is to break your mentality of adhering to pro styles by immersing yourself in an extremely active game, while also practicing the multifront aggro/scout micro and minimap awareness that you need. After a few games of this constant aggro style, you may have lost a lot of games, but you'll have a better handle of what your strengths really are and where you need to improve, especially when you watch the replay. If you're really doing badly on damage inflicted / casualties taken then you know what to practice. If you end up with 2K banked minerals, likewise. If you discover your tech is really fricking awful at X time - and so on and so forth. Do a few games like this before watching any replays.
You will find that it is really horribly hard to do this, and I don't mean this condescendingly. It's easy to attack every so often, lose your units, or even attack and lose a chunk of units. But attacking and retreating constantly means that you absolutely cannot lose a chunk of units on an attack. You MUST keep units alive or you won't have enough units to press in again. You absolutely have to minimize losses, and be extremely active, which is something that characterizes real master play. Even then, it isn't just a question of keeping alive. You have to attack too, and inflict damage, run back and forth. Super micro practice is best when done with constant in-game multiprong attacks, not in something like Starcraft Master.
After you've done a few games in super aggro style, wait a day, play one more game like that, then switch to super passive for a couple games. You can defend and you can scout as much as you like, and you can attack AFTER you repel a major push (of course if you don't repel a major push you're dead.) But generally stay at home and macro macro macro. Wait for them to attack. As before, scout as much as you can, but no "reconnaisance in force", and always always keep an eye on the minimap.
This is to push the limits of your defensive and defensive scouting games, while again increasing the incredibly important minimap awareness. It's also to increase your - hm, what to call it - breakability? Even once you manage to maintain constant aggression, that sort of training is only really most useful if your opponent is very good at multitasking defense. So even with aggro training, you can get into a routine of always knowing what's happening - even though you're looking all around, you're always the one with the initiative and setting the pace of the game with excellent scouting.
Defensive orientation means you're happily puttering around building workers or whatever, monitoring defensive type scouting game - when you're blindsided by a vicious attack. You're not setting the pace now. Plus there's a break in the routine that's been going on for the past 10-12 minutes (perhaps). So your defense is less effective, and maybe your macro game slips.
That is for the most part you're just doing boring routine sort of practice until the time your opponent's attack hits, then your real practice begins.
Practice whichever you feel helps you more. Defensive tends to be better for players that haven't studied timings &c. Aggro is much better for players that haven't developed super micro multitasking. But in any event, keep an eye on that minimap at all times!
When i 11/11 rax cheese i win 9 times of 10, yet when i try to macro after a 11/11 opening and fall back on an expansion I keep getting outmacroed even tho i make a bunker and 1-2 CC's into OC's behind my pressure (in TvZ i try to deny 15hatching and in protoss i try to snipe a third at minute 11.... what am i doing wrong?
That was a great read, I'd like to add something from my own experience.
I used to play WoW a lot, and was quite frankly very good at it (I was playing a Disc Priest for those that wonder, yes, arenas). But after I've been playing it a lot, and by a lot, I mean invest around 50 hours of gametime in several days. My mind went numb. I was doing everything reactively, not even having a thought process, and what do you know, same thing happened in Starcraft 2. I was playing game after game after game, and it got repetitive, boring, I was testing out some builds that I came up with and were rather failing, just to break the mono-play.
What I found out, how to prevent from having this "braindead" style in Starcraft 2, and in overall gaming is to have a side activity, it does not matter if you don't really like to do it as much as Starcraft 2.
If I find myself brain-numb, I just go and do push-ups (I'm a lazy person in general and not a body-builder by any means), but just to get the blood flowing. Physical practice (don't overcommit yourself, if you're exhausted, you're in no shape to do anything other than sleep and drool) is very important, it breaks the numbness, increased blood flow, as with being in the same position for a couple of hours really wears your body down.
Next stop, let's say you really cannot be arsed to do anything of physical strain, you just want to lay back and fuck around. Play some other video game! For example, I went back to WoW after playing Starcraft 2 for nearly a month, and only Starcraft 2, and what do you know, friends that I've been playing with are asking "dude, do you have a second account or something? you're playing way better now". It proved my point of just letting something settle down and then coming back at it, of course, WoW got boring after a couple of hours. The other day, I've had it with Starcraft 2, I spent 2 hours just losing to some cheesers or being generally bad, not spotting that drop coming, not dropping spines at my outer expansions etc. I said to myself "hey, you know what? I am going to play Age of Empires 2 again". I loaded it and tried to do some Starcraft 2 moves in it, it failed miserably, but it was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It does not have to be a MMORPG, play Max Payne 3, Max Payne 2, Baldur's Gate 2, whatever floats your boat, just give yourself a break from Starcraft.
If you don't feel like doing either of those things, here's another suggestion, read! I do not mean go on teamliquid and read stuff, lay down on your bed/sit in your chair and read a book. Want a suggestion? Read Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", there's a classic book for you, it's really awesome. It creates different chemical reactions in your brain rather than repeating that boring early-game as, let's say, Zerg, where you just go "oh, a Terran, ok 15 Hatch, ok 16 pool, ok 3:20 gas, ok scout out, ok what's he doing, ok imma build this, ok ovie sack, ok get defenses and get to lategame asap". That's boring, read a book, read a poem, read an essay, read something for your school/college.
Let's say you do not want to do none of these things and want to do something related to Starcraft 2. Perfect! Anyone can commentate a game, make your own amusement. Get two of your friends to play against each other, you just spectate and commentate in your room, just have a blast, you'll see things they WON'T see and that's how YOU can improve as well, as you're instantly going to think "wait a minute, am I doing the same mistake this guy is doing?". Of course, you can always look up commentators on youtube and just sit back and enjoy the show.
Also, I used to be a guitar player (just mediocre, nothing special), and every now and then, I pick my guitar up and just start playing songs that I still remember (I'm a metalhead, so I get sweaty every time I try to play a Slayer, Sepultura, Morbid Angel or Death song), it helps you let off the heat. Also, I've learned that the warm-up cycle I did for playing the guitar can also be used for warming up my hands/fingers while playing Starcraft. Just have a side-activity.
Hey, all! I'm sorry if this has already been asked/proposed, but are there any existing Liquid Rising desktops or plans to make one? I really like the style of the release poster and was hoping to rep it on my computer!

Download the right client? If it's giving you the option to create a starter account on EU then you are using an EU client. Download the NA client like so : http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/ Account
Ensure that you are downloading the North American version.
I feel like i'm getting better, it feels good. Today I beat TempO and I'm finally in Diamond, and I beat my masters Z friend yesterday and PvZ used to be my best matchup. Feels good .
Protoss is pretty favorable for Bronze but beware, the gold-platinum range of zergs will be an issue of pressure for you. They've learned enough that they know making 90 drones in 10 minutes is fucking SWEET but they don't yet know how to read aggression properly. I reccommend nothing but 2 base 4 gate pressure w/ a robo added on as you're pushing to deal with their predictable roaches.
But before that point I'd recommend +2 attack blink stalkers off 2 base every PvZ. (I screw around as random in the platinum range on EU)

Can't wait until Sunday, the first day of July, as the June win rates will be out. As of right now liquipedia states in GSL and GSTL TvZ is 17-24 (41.46%), with more matches to be played before the end of the month.
Not really. Players that don't stand a chance in GSL win all the time in GSTL. GSTL is where the ordinary can be incredible. I would prefer if one used the entirety Korean leagues instead of a single tournament. It's like only using the KR Weekly. Players are much more inclined to use unusual or unexplored builds there than they are in, say, the GSL.
Same goes for GSTL.
All of this, of course, is in my opinion and is not factual.
How come there are no Terran casters? I look up all the casters and all i see are protoss and zerg casters. Tasteless, Artosis, Khaldor, Wolf, Mr Bitter, Rotterdam, Frodan. The only Terran I know of is Gretorp.
Well, Day9 plays all races I believe, and while his actual level with them is questionable I would bet that all are at least masters, including terran. dApollo is high masters random I believe, so he is a quite good terran player too.
If you mean main races, then I understand where you are coming from and my only answer to you is- obviously Protoss and Zerg are the superior races
How does GM league compare to the GSL leagues? Like, Code S would be only the very, very best of GM, right? And Code A would be more like...GM in general? What about Code B? Does that start including top masters?

Code S, A and B players are all Grandmaster level, at least grandmaster on EU/NA server. The korean GM league is on a higher level than these servers, so I have no idea how high Code B players are ranked over there, but they would surely be grandmaster level on EU/NA.

That's my guess at least
GM League doesn't compare with GSL Leagues. Code A and Code S is a whole level above GM League. That's the best of the best of the best. Code B on the other side .. well, the question is what defines Code B? Somebody who played in a GSL Qualifier? Could be everything ..

Chronoboost on a control group would be a bit overpowered, since people could have one control group for all structures and just chrono them all at once. It would be very abusable.
That being said, can you chronoboost a cannon? I am wondering if that is possible, i've never tried, but it would be interesting to see a cannon shoot faster. That would be pretty broken though.

Depends what server. That might be the case for the KR server, but any Code S or A Korean could easily be top 5 on NA or EU GM. Code B players would also be top 25 or so GM on EU/NA.
You can't get a very concise translation from ladder points to tournaments. It's the same as ICCUP. If someone is A+ then they are godlike at bw but that doesn't exactly translate amateur/pro gamers tournament gamers.
Counter example to the importance of ladder rank in correlation with tournaments: Nestea uses the ladder to do troll builds and hovers between mid-GM and Masters.
However part of the Code B qualification process (for Koreans) is an account in Masters on the KR server. I suspect this is only to reduce the amount of applicants however, as anyone who wishes to compete in the GSL would obviously have to be above Masters level.

I took a few days off to play d3 with the hope of eventually making some money off of it. God damn that game is bad. It leaves me feeling sweaty, mentally lazy, and unsatisfied. SC2 by contrast makes me feel sharp, energetic, and happy after I'm done. I used to play a few matches before starting my calculus homework. God damn I love starcraft 2. Having more fun with this game than any point since release. Love the maps, love the metagame, and love watching high level games. Not worth wasting time on d3 to eventually be able to grind out like $8/hr at best.
New kid on the block... I'm new to the community, as well as SC2, though I played BW for about 7 years, and have been following competitive SC2 for a while now. Being a spectator and being new to actually playing are pretty different though, and in all that, I find a lot of the mechanics of 2 to be fairly different per race, as stated earlier in the thread, more about speed of production due 'softness' of units, and a bit more macro-heavy. Since in BW, I played Zerg as my main race, I now do the same in SC2, though their dynamic has changed for sure, and I'm just curious... Since this isn't like SC1 anymore of course, and there is a full-on ratio for match making, what's the simplest way I could go about practicing without trashing my MMR? Do you recommend any specific training maps? I found Shaggy's List of Training Maps, though are there any others anyone could personally recommend me towards above and beyond that his list might not have encompassed? I can already easily pick off and predict hard bots, but very hard bots are more difficult for me. Can anyone maybe suggest some safe builds that I could practice while I learn more about the dynamics and depth of the game? Thanks in advance, guys. Cheers
1. Double or triple the HP of all units (so you can realistically retreat if you need to; and so the army that I spent 15 minutes building up doesn't evaporate in 4 seconds) 2. Reduce the severity of splash damage (so that if my opponent makes a collosus I'm not forced to abandon half my available unit choices)
Until that happens, it's hard to have fun playing this game. Such a shame really, since it had great potential.
Cheers
Masters Zerg here,
I would suggest you start off with a very basic build (14 gas 14 pool 21 hatch) and just play a few custom games against a mate, or someone from chat (Mixed Fruit, TeamLiquid, Bronze Practice are quite famous chats for opponent search) and get a serious feeling about the flow of the game. The build-order is the least important as Zerg IMO. As soon as you know, what to do, with what, what happens with that, etc. You can search for Match-Up specific builds (15 hatch for ZvT, 14 pool 16 hatch for ZvP, etc) and just start laddering. Ladder-Rank is not important at all, because as soon as you get better, your rank and MMR will get better too.

Hmm. I appreciate the insight there man, noted. Linear movement now, I suppose. Kinda exciting, if ya ask me. There's just some old habits from BW there that I gotta work on getting rid of, mainly with how I try to micro certain units. Seems that micro in 2 just isn't as important as it was in 1, but I suppose that's just mechanical difference from streamlined pathing and old coding.

I'm going to take the liberty of assuming you are Terran from your icon.
1. Stim ONE marine and run it in front of your army. If you see a laser party then don't a move your blob into it, yeah? 2. See above sentence.
Man I wish i pushed way harder when i was top 500 (in the first few months of release) so that I coulda made one of those top 200 lists that Blizz pushed every week. I'd be able to brag about that forever

I do! In fact, this season I am playing only Terran (logged 250 games thus far) to improve since I feel so lackluster compared to my other 2 races. As R, it definitely feels a bit tougher at the moment as T to win when you spread your time across the races.
Hi thar. I will be going to Greece on tuesday, the day before ro16 in code s is played. My question is, does anybody here know how good the internet usually is on hotels? I will be staying at a 4 star hotel.
Does anyone know a cheap & secure way to buy NA sc2? $60 from Blizzard seems a bit too much for my taste, especially when it's like ~91 in my currency. 1 : 1,53

I only watched the 10th minute where you have stalkers & 1 immortal kiting 4 zealots. I don't think you should kite in this scenario because you lost an immortal. What I'd do is to pull a unit once it's injured because immortals and/or sentries (always outrun by zealots in terms of speed) are too damn slow to be effective in kiting.
There's also a three month waiting period to register streams with TL if I'm not mistaken.
I was going over my replays and unintentionally found this. I'm not entirely sure why it looked cool to me. Maybe it's because I know that I had 2 additional unscouted bases or the rest of the unseen map on my side was covered with creep.
There was just something about it that made me think, damn, creep is an awesome mechanic.
Where it's not healthy how pissed off I'm getting. I want to quit but, I simply can't I still love it. But, Terran it's just I can't do most of my match-ups anymore. (this isn't balance whine) Now with HTs popping when my medivacs pop I can't do my timing anymore so I'm having a 0% win rate unless they do something really dumb. And zerg, yeah that's it. TvT is just chess. I so want to quit like you have no idea then I see someone like MKP or all of the pros they aren't bothered and it inspires me but this stress is getting to me and idk what to do.
Does someone know what is SKT1 by.Sun's (or Rain) intro song in the Proleague? The title is in korean and i can't find a way to know the english name. It's the very first song in this video.
Hey, so this is definitely not thread worthy but I'd love to get a few people's opinion on my situation. Basically I've read a lot of post (and specifically one today) about plat players who have been plat for 2 years and never got any better, never got promoted or anything. That's basically my situation too! I've been plat the past 5 seasons, only had a quick time in diamond a couple of months ago but I had to stop playing for a couple of weeks right after and got demoted when I came back. So for most players who are in this situation, what people advice them is to practice more efficiently, trying to focus on specific aspects of their gameplay, and training with partners of a higher level. I guess I should do the same However I'm playing random, always have and always will. I'm not a cheesy player at all, I prefer straight up macro game 99% of the time. So I was just wondering if as random, there could be specific tips or hints on how to play better (note that focusing on specific builds isn't really relevant for me yet, I'd first like to get to a point of flawless mechanics).
Edit: also note that I always let my opponent know my race within the first 20 seconds of the game ... it can sometime do me wrong since smart players will understand "he tells me his race = he wants straight up play = I'm gonna cheese him easily" but I prefere it this way because not telling my race always ends up in playing a crooked early game (for both me and my opponent, he would have to be ready for anything and I would have to take into account him not doing stuffs like Forge Fast Expand in PvZ ... because he's scared of the Terran possibility of my randomness).
I play random on my second account and announce race. It doesn't equal being cheesed.
In short, I would figure out what matchups you are worst at and practice them specifically. Random is harder obviously. The best thing you can honestly do is study strategy forum threads, ask questions and get practice partners. Nothing really else comes to mind. Good luck!
I didn't know if this deserved its own thread, so I posted here, it is a player who levels other players for money (which I'm pretty sure isn't allowed)
So yeah, should we do anything about this? People do it a lot lately.
Report them and move on, nothing else to really do. Why you would want your account "Leveled" is beyond me. So you can get frustrated and lose in a different league until you're demoted?
I think they're doing us a favor by providing free ladder points at a later date for us when scrubs get their accounts back lol.

From your post, it seems to me that you're quite comfortable playing in your own style. Taking that as given, it's useless to give advice that you won't take.
(edit) - I understand this seems dismissive of the poster's purported concern. But really.
1. Says he should practice according to particular advice, but admits he doesn't do it and hasn't done it. 2. Says he is "not a cheesy player". If you're good, or are even serious about improving, cheese is a weapon in your arsenal. 3. Says he prefers a straight up macro 99%. Again, this focus on side issues. 4. Says he always randoms, always will. More absolutes. Besides which IMO even random players should take turns focusing on particular races. 5. Says he wants "flawless mechanics" - considering the wording of the post so far, I think this is idealistic and unrealistic, rather than merely a poorly chosen turn of phrase. 6. Advises opponents 20 seconds in - again (again) focus on side issues. 7. Justifies (6) with fear of "crooked early game" - more side issues. Your opponent should well consider the possibility you are lying when you inform of race anyways.
Again and again, there is focus not on improvement, but on all these side issues and semirealistic (at best) expectations.
If you want to play the game for fun, play for fun, and don't worry about "improving" or whatever. If you're so fixated on improvement, you could think that since everyone's improved since release, staying at platinum has meant you've kept up with the increasingly difficult competition. So there you go. You've improved, you're having fun, you don't need to take a lot of advice that apparently intrudes on your comfort level.
If you want to play the game and kick ass and move up in the field, then you'd better be prepared to smash all your side issues and preconceptions in the goal of kicking ass. But again, since it seems clear to me this is not something the poster's at all prepared to do, it seems that advising the poster in that regard is fruitless, thankless, and pointless.

Honestly? I'd take a break. Take a month off, then come back. No one will think less of you. Since you're having such anxiety about it, the proper course of action is not to repeat the behavior that makes you anxious.
As Terran's T3 problems are widely recognised, do you think armory upgrades should be combined into one category - mech. In other words, factory and starport units share the same upgrades. I think it's kind of inflexible to transition if you have 3 tech paths (engineering bay upgrades, air upgrades and ground mech upgrades).
P.S. I'm not balance whining or something, I'm just giving you a topic for discussion. Terran isn't even my main race.
Kinda makes me want to quote every single Zerg whine post from the 2011 into a thread and write in big, bold letters: "This is exactly what you look like". It's not pretty when anyone does it.

day9 did a daily about this recently and many Terrans have incorporated that daily, since a lot of Terran players were using it.
This primarily deals with gglord composition that a Terran cannot face in a straight on battle, especially since they keep maxing T1, T1.5 units the entire game. The only way you can win is to exploit the immobility of gglords (they are slow as fuck), just have your army where the gglords aren't and don't sit in your base. ALWAYS DROP, and by always I mean 2-3 drops constantly going down, you should have enough production facilities at that point to remake that army in 20-25 in-game seconds. Just chop down the Zerg's expansions (even if they have Spine Crawlers at their expansions, get some Marauders in the mix and use 2 full Medivacs), keep poking with your Vikings at the gglords forcing them to back off, but DO NOT OVERMAKE VIKINGS, if the Zerg sees you have 20+ Vikings on the field, he will just tech-switch to Ultras and possibly end up winning the game, as most of your army is air-only.
Whenever I face a high Diamond/Masters Terran, they either a-move into gglords (bad idea) and lose and just go "zerg imba, omg, can't do shit" or play a smart game and avoid the army at all times. All of those BM Terrans sit behind their wall of Siege Tanks and Supply Depots and then cry about imbalance when you bring your only siege unit in action, because you attacked their turtle, don't turtle late-game versus Zerg, you give the immobile gglord army map control, and that is bad.
Mech can be a viable solution, but 10+ gglords/corruptors/infestors+ground fodder can kill you if they get even a decent engagement. Think of your bio army as Speedlings in early/mid game, as that's how slow the gglords are, avoid fighting them at all costs and constantly poke with Vikings.
I’m a silver protoss player and I wanted to work on my mechanics. One of my bad habits is scrolling too much rather than clicking on the minimap. I was thinking of setting the scroll speed to 1% to force myself not to scroll. I was just wondering what people thought of this idea and if anyone has tried it. Any comments or concerns would be appreciated.

That's a really bad idea. It's not like scrolling is bad unless it's very far away. Set your scroll speed at ~75%-100% instead.

Oh really? I assumed it would be bad in the long run but I was thinking of doing it for a couple of weeks just it get me in the habit of using the minimap more. I also just tanked my mmr in order to attempt a Funday Monday so I was thinking that having a handicap that improved my mechanics would be good.

Question, why does 90% of the forum feel qualified to talk about balance just because they heard some GSL Terran say it's tough? 90% of this forum isn't even close to the level where the balance would affect them because they can't do things like inject constantly, or constant unit production and so on.
Answer: Because it's gotten more difficult for them. At the current time, most vocal Terrans are in a sort of negative feedback loop. They have a bad time on ladder; tournament; watching streams. They share the thoughts and others agree with them. Some come up with new strategies and some complain.
Im still a forever Bronze player who watches far more than he plays. With this in mind can someone explain why most commentators and casters these days are talking about how Terrans aren't opening with reactored Hellions against Zerg? Yet in the same games they say this (it's a very common phrase currently in use) the Terran opens reactored Hellions against Zerg, I mean I think an example of this was the NASL Ret vs Dimaga just recently, though I also heard it on a commentary of Sheth vs Thorzain on ladder as well as other (husky, day9 etc)
Who decides what gets put up on the front page of TeamLiquid? I think it's weird that the news feed about Prime's elimination from the GSTL is still up, when TL could be covering Homestory. It gives me the impression that the loser's bracket of a Korean competition (or rather, just the GSL - how come TL never front page mentioned MKP's all kill of Startale in the KSL?) gets precedence over a fantastic Eurocentric tourney like Homestory

I think the reason they say terrans aren't opening with reactored hellions is because there is a zerg build that gets from 4 to 6 queens (usually 6) which deals with hellion harass pretty well, so hellions become kind of useless. They can't stop creep spread effectively because they cannot kite queens (new range) anymore.

IMO most SC2 commentators just aren't that good at commentating, whether GOM, NASL, Day9, whatever. Although I really don't follow Day9 much (he's too entertainy and not enough informy for me), I'll quote his
Who’d be a caster? Low pay, long hours, and the reward is generally a couple of forum pages of people wishing you an untimely death. . . .There are only a handful of people capable of keeping the analysis and entertainment both at a high level and provide both ends of the spectrum at the same time; this is why Day[9] has his Pope-like status. . . . The world of commentating, much like the rest of western SCII, is currently in a limbo between amateur enthusiasm and professionalism. The players are not quite there yet, the competitions aren’t, and similarly the casters are still in a learning process.
--
On the topic of reactor hellions - there's OLD reactor hellions and NEW reactor hellions. Commentators generally just assume viewers know the difference, just like they should automatically know the hit count difference between 1v0 TvZ upgrades, or 0v1. (Again - I think commentators come up short).
What's the difference? Long story short, queens got a range buff, so Terrans can't just waltz in and own Zerg with a few Hellions any more. Now it takes a bit of doing.
There are threads on the forum going back and forth about "queen range buff" / "tvz" / "designated balance thread", just look at them a bit if you want more details. Or better yet, don't look . . . it isn't pretty.
Thanks for the responses and that article snippet really makes a lot of sense, it ties in with what I think Artosis might have been saying, about Korean commentators actually having script writers and researchers in comparison to a lot of foreign commentators who seem a lot more bedroom productions.
Also cheers for explaining about the queen buff, I'd known about that, just couldn't understand why casters kept saying reactor hellion was being phased out, then watching for yet another tvz, reactor hellion trying to deny the creep spread or get around it and break drones (ofc usually failing but still).

I'm a silver terran and have been for a long time and was wondering if i could get some advice. It seems that at the moment even though i can execute my builds well enough to get up to my late game army fairly quickly i still just get rolled by z/p, i attempt multi-pronged attacks etc and transition to ghost/viking accordingly most of the time. The main issue i'm having is most z and p know they can essentially roll terran if they protect from drop harrass at their expands and shut down ours. I've been a progamer stream viewer since i started playing and often watch players like kas/forgg/dragon/bomber and notice that although they will be 100x faster and more efficient with their builds, they don't seem to have the problem of just getting rolled by the late game armies of z and p. I played a tvp yesterday where i played my part to the degree where i should have just walked over to the p army and destroyed it, i scouted the collossus (and so produced appropriate vikings), my upgrades were 3:3 to his 2:1, and i even had 2 ghosts that landed some nice emps on the zealots, my army was maxed at 16 mins and i was annihilated without the use of storms or any kind of cutesy force field micro on the p part. I'm losing the will to live as i just don't know what else i can do to try and win... what makes it worse is im just a cruddy silver. is it normal to feel this way this low down in the ladder? I would really appreciate any tips or pointers on how to get up in the ladders and out of this max army wipe zone thanks

As you've probably heard 1000 times, always try to improve macro and build execution. However, to actually help this problem you should focus on practicing army control. In TvZ if you are going bio w/ tanks, always presplit your units if you have the chance. Keep bio and medivacs on one control group, tanks on another, and possibly vikings on a third one if you are up against brood lords. Always spread out tanks, and when facing brood lords, never clump up your vikings because one fungal is all it takes.
In TvP, you should use three control groups: MMM, ghosts, and vikings. Always scan ahead and try to snipe out the templar. If that is too difficult at this point, EMP will do. Have the vikings queued up to focus fire the colossus with shift clicking, stim the bio and A move with some basic splitting and concaving, and use the ghosts to EMP and snipe templar.
Also, in the late game for both of these matchups, nukes are a great addition. They are extremely easy to use. Just cloak a ghost and queue it up to move to a location and drop a nuke. It is so much harder to find it and pull away than it is to launch and this will cut into your opponents multitasking and micro heavily, especially if you launch multiple nukes simultaneously.
Hi, I have a mouse question. I have a naga razor. It is my second one. The first one got damaged through a lot of travel. Anyways it used to scratch the hell out of the hard top mousepad that I used to have, and it started to make the mouse jump around and stuff. I thought this was because the mousepad was a cheap peice of crap (rocketfish from best buy). So I ended up buying another naga razor, thinking my mousepad was scratched cause it was just crappy. I use the mouse on my desk without a mouse pad, and the new mouse has scratched my table all to hell. I have inspected the mouse and tried to figure out where a jagged peice or something may be sticking out and scratching but everything looks to be perfectly fine. I don't get it! Has anybody else had this problem and know how to fix it on the mouse? Other than getting a cloth mousepad obviously.

Blizzard has a new installer for those willing to test out the 1.5.0 beta code (including the Arcade add-in) that does NOT install in the same folder as your default StarCraft II folder. Even better, those that have Starter Edition accounts are also included.
Known changes - 1. All forms of AA are supported (from what I can see, it may be on by default, as there are still no in-game settings for AA). 2. (Windows) The beta installer is a *streaming* installer (ala DIablo III) - that means you get to play quite a bit sooner than a traditional (either online or offline) install. 3. (Windows 8) Windows 8 Release Preview is supported without modification. (This is something I have personally tested.) 4. Arcade (all those minigames, such as Aiur Chef and StarJeweled) are going to be added - StarJeweled itself already has been.
How to get in on the fun: The beta client installers (for Windows and OS X) are on the same page as all your game client installs. This is NOT a "closed" beta (per no less than Dustin Browder) - discussion outside the 1.5.0-specific BattleNet/SC II forums is allowed - in fact, it is encouraged. (Naturally, due to posting rules for Starter Edition account holders, outside the Official forums is the only place we CAN discuss it.)
Initial impressions - they did some serious cleanup to a LOT - if not all - of the base code; performance overall is improved, including playback of the cutscenes. (I have NOT changed my GPU since the beta, so it's not the hardware. I had to change the settings manually to my preferred defaults (1280x720/High LOD), which is supposed to be a no-no for GPUs with 512MB of DDR3 such as mine, despite both the beta and GM being rather nicely playable at those same custom settings. I wonder how it performs on the 1GB GDDR5 GPUs of more recent vintage, as I am considering the HIS HD7770 iCooler as one of my next four upgrades (the others are Core i5-3570K, ASUS P8Z77-V, and 16GB of DDR3-1333 DRAM).

MLG booths can be scorching hot as far as I remember, but I thiiiiiiiink they may also be the most soundproof? Not entirely sure. I don't remember much from DH booths except that they were nice lol
They have to be THAT soundproof lol, MLG crowds are by far the loudest, the hype at MLG is always sick. <insert link to dustin browder reaction in MKP's win at Anaheim>
Hi guys, I'm new to this site, and have been playing starcraft for a couple of months. I recently posted this video on youtube, and was hoping that someone could look at the strategy and see what they think of it. I didn't make the strategy, I just use it.
I have been promoted to Platinum league this season.

Wow you could not be more wrong. Supply calldown: All in timing or "I suck at mechanics". Comparing inject to supply call down is like .. saying chronoboost is like supply call down.

I do agree that larva inject quantity and income across the board should be slashed down, though. Also revert to 1 gas por favor.
