ChatGPT translation from official page:

GSL Official — Notice: Detailed Plans for 2026 GSTL

Hello, this is GSL.

GSL, which held its first tournament in 2010, has now reached its 17th year, thanks to the unwavering love and support of our fans. The 2026 GSL Seasons 1 and 2 were also successfully completed thanks to your enthusiastic support.

We sincerely thank all the fans who continue to support StarCraft II and GSL.

Fulfillment of the Crowdfunding Pledge and Background of the 2026 GSTL

As announced previously as part of our GSL crowdfunding commitment, thanks to the active support of our fans, we have expanded GSL CK to at least twice per month. We are pleased that we can continue to showcase players' matches and provide various forms of entertainment even during the off-season.

We have also been reviewing the GSL schedule for the second half of 2026 from various angles.

Thanks to the valuable support and funding provided by our fans during the first half of the year, we have established a foundation for continued content production. However, due to practical circumstances, it was difficult to hold GSL Season 3 in the same format as before.

Therefore, rather than postponing the use of the valuable funds raised from supporters or reducing the scale of the league, GSL sought a way to repay our fans for their support while bringing new vitality to the StarCraft II ecosystem.

As a result, we have decided to hold GSTL, the StarCraft II team league that fans have been missing, during the second half of 2026.

Through GSTL, we want to present a new form of tournament content and the unique excitement of team-vs-team competition.

We are also continuing to prepare for the next regular GSL season, while keeping various operating possibilities open. As long as the StarCraft II community continues to support us, SOOP will continue investing in and working on StarCraft II content.

2026 GSTL Overview and Schedule

The highest priorities for the 2026 GSTL are:

"Sustainable league operation and revitalization of the StarCraft II ecosystem."

Online / Offline

Regular season and playoffs:
Will be conducted online, with InToTheTV's Inu handling the operation, production, and broadcasting of the GSTL regular season and playoffs.

There will also be co-streaming broadcasts with co-streamers and players.

Grand Final:
As with the existing GSL, the Grand Final will be held offline at Freec Studio.

Korean and global commentators will be on-site to share the atmosphere of the final with the fans.

GSTL Match Format

The GSTL regular season will use a full round-robin format.

There will be two team matches per day.

Each team match consists of three rounds using a combination of formats familiar to fans.

Round 1 — Proleague Format

Bo5

Lineups are submitted before the match.
The same player cannot play more than once in Sets 1–3.
Starting from Set 4, a player who appeared in Sets 1–3 may make one additional appearance.
Once the winner has been determined, remaining sets will not be played.
Round 2 — Winner's League Format

First to 3 / All-kill

Each team sends out its designated opening player.
When a player loses, the losing team chooses its next player.
Once the winner has been determined, remaining matches will not be played.
Round 3 — Final Ace Match

Bo1

If the results of Rounds 1 and 2 are tied 1–1 in Round Score, a Super Ace Match will be played.

So each team match is essentially:

Bo5 Proleague → Winner's League → Bo1 Ace Match if necessary

New "Scrim Match" System

For the 2026 GSTL, GSL is introducing Scrim Matches to support players' personal broadcasting activities and provide fans with more content beyond official matches.

Free team scrims + victory bonuses

During the tournament, participating teams can freely arrange scrims/practice matches with one another through mutual agreement.

The winning team will receive a separate scrim victory bonus.

Live viewing through players' personal broadcasts

Scrim matches will be livestreamed through the players' individual streaming channels.

Fans can watch not only the games but also behind-the-scenes conversations between teammates.

Fan + player interactive content

Personal broadcasts may include viewer-participation events such as:

Challenge missions
Versus/battle missions
Other interactive events

The goal is to create content that both players and viewers can enjoy together.

Off-Season StarCraft II Content and Streamer Support

Beyond the official GSL/GSTL tournaments, SOOP says it will continue supporting StarCraft II throughout the year.

GSL CK

Held at least twice per month to provide regular content during the off-season.

International tournament broadcasting rights

SOOP has secured Korean-language broadcasting rights for popular overseas StarCraft II tournaments including:

RSL
Kung Fu Cup
MoG2
Wardi Monday
Support for streamer/pro-player tournaments

SOOP will actively support the production of small tournaments and exhibition matches directly organized by professional players and streamers.

Creator collaboration

SOOP will continue supporting StarCraft II tournament content such as ISSL, created by "Inu" of InToTheTV, who was selected as a Best Streamer.

StarCraft II viewing events

Accumulated viewing Drops:
Rewards will be provided based on the amount of time viewers watch individual broadcasts, with the aim of strengthening the community.

Streamer subscription promotions:
SOOP wants to attract users from other platforms while helping players and streamers maintain stable broadcasting activities.

Crowdfunding and Supporter Rewards

The crowdfunding money raised by fans is described as an important driving force for continuing:

GSL
GSTL
The StarCraft II ecosystem

GSL thanks fans who continued supporting the game even during the off-season when no official tournament was taking place.

They explicitly say:

"It was thanks to your trust and support that we were able to begin this new tournament, the 2026 GSTL."

The benefits previously promised to GSL supporters will also be applied to the GSTL content.

SOOP subscribers
Supporter-exclusive profile icons and emotes
Replays
Benefits for long-term subscribers
Etc.
Patreon supporters

Existing membership benefits will be applied according to each support tier.

Closing

StarCraft II esports is creating an opportunity for new changes and growth together with its fans.

Even amid changing circumstances, SOOP and GSL have continued alongside StarCraft II. Going forward, they say they will work together with fans, players, and streamers to build a sustainable StarCraft II ecosystem.

They are happy to present GSTL together with fans this year and thank everyone for continuing to love GSL and StarCraft II.

Please give the 2026 GSTL lots of interest and support.

My read of the announcement

The most important sentence is this:

"GSL Season 3를 기존과 동일한 방식으로 개최하기에는 현실적인 여건상 어려움이 있었습니다."

Literally, "Due to practical circumstances, it was difficult to hold GSL Season 3 in the same way as before."

That's somewhat deliberately vague. They do not say "GSL Season 3 is canceled permanently."

Instead, they say:

2026 GSL S1 — happened
2026 GSL S2 — happened
Traditional GSL S3 — too difficult under current circumstances
GSTL — created as the major second-half competition
Next regular GSL season — still being prepared
SOOP will continue investing in SC2 as long as community support continues
And there's an important financial implication

They specifically mention crowdfunding multiple times.

The message appears to be:

"The crowdfunding gave us enough resources to continue producing SC2 content, but not enough to run another traditional GSL season at the same scale."

Rather than letting the money sit unused or putting on a smaller GSL, they are reallocating it into GSTL + GSL CK + streamer content + international broadcasts + scrims.

That makes GSTL look less like a random nostalgia project and more like a cost-efficient replacement for GSL S3 that can keep the SC2 ecosystem active.

And the addition of scrim bonuses + personal-stream broadcasts is particularly interesting: SOOP is trying to turn the players' entire competitive ecosystem into content, rather than paying for everything through a traditional studio-based tournament.

Also, the board immediately below this announcement has:

"[GSL CK] GSL CK Spin-off: StarCraft 1 Team Battle Announcement"

dated August 5, which suggests SOOP is experimenting with team-battle formats and streamer-driven content beyond traditional GSL even before GSTL begins.

So overall, I would characterize this announcement as:

Not "GSL is dying." More like "traditional GSL has become too expensive/difficult to run regularly, so SOOP is restructuring SC2 esports around GSTL + CK + streamers + international content, while keeping the door open for future GSL seasons."

Cool to see some more content, but is it just me who doesn’t really get the point of team leagues when there’s so few actual teams left?

Be it the Kespa teams, or rooting for a Liquid, or having your favourite eSF team there’s something to attach to, stuff was fun

Teams can be formed rather quickly and stay if there is some money in it, that's not the issue. The problem could be the offline finals. BASILISK having to ship out Serral, Reynor and trigger to Korea for one match sounds expensive

Just in terms of buying, ramming various players together to make up a team complement doesn’t do it for me, but hey personal preference.

Definitely glad to have GSTL back, but I feel like if they had been more transparent earlier and given fans a set funding goal that would make GSL Code S Season 3 possible, they had a decent chance of hitting that mark.
