The pricing is ridiculous considering
1) Their tech isn't that good. The quality of the streams is acceptable, but nothing I would pay money for. Most commercial streaming services offer 720P+. See vudu, netflix, hell even HD cable.
2) They show fucking ads. If we are paying you money already, why are you trying to make an extra buck with ads? Absurd.

1) Feel free to provide a better stream for the amount of content they are, for a cheaper price.
2) They have to pay their sponsors too you know..

1) We don't have to. Many tournaments already have and for free (Dreamhack, MLG, IPL). Even with the VODs, I don't get clear 720p.
Pic Quality Comparison (May contain spoilers!!!) Dreamhack + Show Spoiler + (Ignore the Press ESC crap. Too lazy to redo.)
GOMTV + Show Spoiler +
I wonder which one looks better. I'm not trying to bad mouth GOM or say their pic quality is terrible, but it's definitely not on par with a tournament that was free to watch.
2. Uh, what? Sponsors pay them, brohan.

NASL are a couple of casters, one of them usually extremely lame, casting to a replay. Not at all comparable.
I do agree that $40 is a bit much, but don't compare live events to the likes of NASL/IPL/TSL.

Not really expensive. If you don't have a source of income it seems expensive.

1) Ok, then if other tournaments are doing it, go watch them? Dont crap on GOMtv because they choose to price their tournament and VODs at a reasonable price for what they provide.
2) I didnt word that too well. I meant that the sponsors pay/give items/whatever they do too keep their side of the bargain, so GOMtv has to do the same. Give more air time to their sponsors = paying their half of the deal.
I did however word #2 horribly

1. My intent was not to crap on GOMTV. They are great. My intent was to show you that there are other tournaments with better production out there for free. That's it.
2. It still doesn't make sense. We pay $25 and still get ads. Generally, you pay for a ticket to get rid of ads. With GOM, we pay for SC2, and get annoying ads played before every single VOD as well as those stupid popup ads that keep coming up even if you close them out. It makes no sense. It should either be a free service w/ ads thrown in or a paid service w/ no ads. Just my 2 cents. (Suggestion: Low quality vods w/ ads for free. That sounds awesome to me)
I think me not buying the tickets boils down to not being excited about watching Koreans play again. Their games have, in my opinion, grown increasingly boring. It feels like almost every game is a BO created just to kill your opponent within the first 10 minutes of the game and if it doesn't work, then you're fucked. Very, very rarely, do we get a game that's back and forth and exciting.

you sir are incorrect. They are not casting replays it is live, just not live when we see it. Think of it as recording it like on tv then watching it later. But the games were all played live just like the show was live but not on when you watch it on DVR.

Reasons to purchase a ticket:
1. DRG 2. FXO tonight YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!

$25 really isn't much, unless you're 12 I guess... I have to think that half the people in this thread complaining must make their own soap aswell. :|

Or:
-They feel it's not worth it. -They're adults and have other responsibilities such as a mortgage, car payment, etc... -They won't have the time to watch most of the games/VODs, so they won't be paying for it. -They're tired of buying tickets/passes to watch these tournaments when there are other great tournaments being put on for free. -They can't afford it.
There are many reasons. Stop being so narrow minded. Insulting people doesn't get you anywhere.

40 dollar is a bit much for a lump sum. the free stream is a joke.
just picked up a 30 dollar tee shirt. take my money e sports.

I'm not intending to insult people, but seriously, it's just not much money... most people probably spend more on useless stuff anyway. People are making it out as if it's robbery when you're paying next to nothing for 3 months of entertainment. It's kind of ridiculous.

What are you all talking about, GSTL is probably the last tournament that ill not not pay for. It is simply the best tournament out there, the hype, the games, the drama, EPIC!
|
Other - 25 days of play, 25 dollars. 1 dollar per day. Old GSL was 4 days for 5 dollars. Therefore the new price on a day-per-day or game-per-game basis is actually far cheaper. With 30 team matches from 4 to 7 sets per match, gives roughly 125-250 individual games. Its about 12 cents per individual game.
|
hmm I'm torn I jsut can;t drop that much money all at once on my budget but I really want to time to make a very hard choice
|
as a bigger fan of GSTL than the regular GSL season, i'm excited we get more than 2 weeks of sparse content. this new format lends to the growth as e-sports as being more sports-like (team play, camaraderie, hurray!) as well as many more games filled with drama, wild cards, trump players, and just content in general (seriously, i'm getting sick of watching wave after wave of Bo3 games, especially all the TvT's we had last season).
$25 is a price i don't mind paying and hopefully someday we'll have enough people watching GSL that it's 100% free.

How fuckin' cheap are ya'll when it comes to your favorite sport? There will be between 155 and 264 games depending on how close the series are. The no-ads ticket is $40 dollars.
That's between 15 cents and 25 cents PER GAME.
For the best Starcraft players in the best tournament format in the world.
Too cheap to drop 20 cents? Get the no-ads ticket for $25. Now you're paying between 9 cents and 15 cents. Assume the average game length is 20 minutes (based on watching every single GomTV game since season 1). That's as low as 25 cents for an hour of entertainment, or the high roller price of 75 cents for the premium-deluxe no-ads assuming every series is an all-kill.
I bought the $40 no-ads ticket as soon as it was available because it just made financial sense. I don't know what ya'll are spending your money on, but you must be super-shoppers or 3rd-world poor because I can't find many better deals for entertainment than the GSTL.
All I read in this post was a bunch of bitching and calling people cheap. Grow the fuck up. Pot, meet kettle.
Maybe people don't like being bombarded with so many tickets to buy at once? You ever think of that? Oh, that's right. You didn't because you were too busy acting like an immature asshole by calling people cheap.
Pot... meet kettle.
I would much rather pay $10 a month instead of having to shell out $35 right now for both the individual league and team league. Why? Because it keeps my fucking SC2 budget under control. There's also hundreds of hours of free content out there and paying for this just seems to be so pointless now.
It's smarter to purchase things on value, not on up-front price. If you can't do this, you really should reevaluate your approach to money.
Not only that, but 95% of the games in the Championship league or w/e the hell it was called were a damn snooze-fest. Korean players are becoming increasingly more and more boring to watch. All they are doing now is figuring out clever build orders to win and that's it. The Polt vs MMA finals is a great example of clever BOs, but the games were so damn boring with the exception of one of them. If you find one player building unit X, Y, Z & A-moving at the 7 minute mark with them "exciting," then holy hell do I wish you have some sort of exciting life outside Starcraft.
If you want show-games like the WWF, then the GSL probably isn't your cup of tea. Artosis and Grubby in the NASL have put on some epic and entertaining matches.
Edit - I'm also sick and tired of tournaments that run over 1 month. I've stopped following them completely. It's just becoming way too tiresome and boring to keep up with everything, let alone a tournament that lasts more than a month. Sounds like your beef isn't with the money. Not sure why you opened this thread in the first place.

yeah, i also bought a NASL pass to support it but ended up watching maybe 15 or so matchups. definitely worth what i paid for it, but i feel like i'm just much more entertained watching GSL, especially the team leagues.
