Q: What should I be posting about? A: Basically, anything you want to talk about but aren't sure if it warrants a topic of its own. Heard a rumour you want to share? A new video? A question you are sure is super common but can't find the answer to via searching? A brilliant new idea that you want to vet, to make sure it's really as brilliant as you think it is?
This is the place.
Note: Posting standards will not be as high as if you were to make a new thread, but pointless spam will still not be tolerated. I have seen threads like these work out alright on other sites (for other games) so I figured, why not give it a shot? It's possible there's not really enough content for something like this to exist at this point in time, but no harm then, it will just die on its own.
Hmm why not first post here. Obviously this wouldn't warrant a thread just in itself(one tiny balance fix, it would get closed right away) but I feel it would help stabilize the game without making zerg OP.
Letting the Queen have like a spell that temporarily stuns a unit for 3(haven't decided exact time, maybe just one second?). Perhaps the queen emits some acid stuff that roots the unit to the ground. This could help stop with reapers and especially blue flame helions. I'm thinking low time for stun so then you can still do those strats, but give zerg more of a chance. For example this will make it so with sufficient micro then zerg can stun the helions, try to quickly get a surround, and try to take care of that. But for example you might even need to make an extra queen just for all that. Perhaps 50 Energy for one stun thing?
Wouldn't that just encourage harass off creep? As soon as the queen is on normal ground, any of those units can kite away from her radius and go in for the drones.
Hey guys! I was thinking today about the whole orbital command/planetary fortress dichotomy and ended up wondering when it would be better to ignore the obvious economic benefits of the orbital command and go for the security of the planetary fortress. Is there a point where the benefits of the orbital command stop adding up? Are there certain matchups where the terran lack of mobility calls for the aid of the planetary fortress? I don't have a ton of experience so what do you all think?
Generally it's standard to have Orbital Commands at your Natural and Main. Usually the mules and scans from there will keep you covered econ wise. Then, "feel free" to make my third (depending on where it is) a Planetary Fortress. They're highly situational, if the expansion isn't exposed or likely going to be under threat from the enemy, I wouldn't bother.
Good idea Pandain. Maybe the spell only works on creep too. The creep reaches up and ensnares a single unit for a brief time, but does not work on massive units. 50 energy seems a little high though.
Edit: reread your post and realize you're suggesting AoE, hence the greater cost

Lol I wasn't suggesting AoE but that's an idea. Except I think then it would be too OP and even queens would be INCREDIBLY useful in other situations. For example, it's basically a diminished form of Fungal Growth.

Switch the spells: Transfusion -> Infestor /// Fungal Growth -> Queen. Would be great.

Seems silly. The infestor is a great unit because it can cast FG, If you switched those around you would get some sort of creep highway Queen timing push that would be unstoppable.
Zerg players seem to be doing better against reaper harass in the games I've been watching recently.
On September 07 2010 09:32 404.Half wrote: If you switched those around you would get some sort of creep highway Queen timing push that would be unstoppable.
Yeah, that's the main problem - queens should remain defensive unit, by design. But also fungal growth could lose/reduce its damage element, just stun. Meanwhile, Infestors now have ITs for pure offense, so they don't need FG as much as before, while all mid-late game would benefit if Transfusion was on combat caster, rather than queens.
No, you really REALLY need FG for mid-late to efficiently fight large balls of smaller units, especially holding terran bio still so you can baneling kersplode them. It really just belongs on the infestor imo.
I suppose a single target stun on the queen would be neat, but if you didn't take anything off, it'd be a 4th spell, which is pretty non-standard for casters currently.
I strongly disagree with switching the spells. Fungal growth is not only an incrediabbly useful spell vs. MMM and other builds in general, Infested Terran has not yet been proven to be a good "replacement" for getting rid of it.
So I wouldn't say an AoE spell for the queen, just one unit. Some things I was thinking: 1. Would promote the use of an extra queen vs. Helion things. 2. Might promote the "anti micro" which prohibits true control(such as the spell Forcefield and fungal growth) 3.4 queens would probably become more common(aka 1 for creep, one for the unamed queen spell.)
Not sure if this has been discussed before but it seems bringing back consume would be really useful for zerg. Lets say its researched from the infestation pit instead of Pathogen Glands and it applies to both the infestor and the queen, you suddenly increase the possibilities for zerg. After this suddenly infestors and queens become even more valuable due to capability to do multiple fungals, transfuses or laying down lots of creep tumors really fast at the cost of zerglings. Also gives zerg the really hive mind feel where smallers units are fodder for larger ones. Don't know why blizz removed it in the first place...
Q: Due to the viability of 1.1.1 builds on terran, and even sometimes protoss, along with the denial of scouting in these matchups, would it be best to build both a hydralisk den and a spire in the mid-game or simply focus on one while teching to hive and eventual ultralisks?
Similarly, especially in the ZvP matchup, what can a zerg player do against fast stargate play? Especially with many phoenix's, since zerg needs to get to Lair tech before any realistic anti air measures can be applied, it seems like the protoss is almost too safe going into fast phoenix play. It denies overlords any scouting ability, it harasses very easily and is very difficult to stop without infestors (which are very squishy and must build energy), and all the while it allows protoss to expand easily and transition into a stronger warpgate push.
Ive tried to fight this protoss stargate build many times but I feel the only solution is hydralisks and infestors in the midgame. It is unfortunate that a few phoenix off 1 stargate (4-7) may trigger such a huge response but keep in mind that a zerg player such as myself, denied scouting, is very afraid of a large warpgate push following the phoenix harass. I believe the phoenix harass buys far too much time for the protoss while the zerg must remain defensive. So, im asking how other zergs, or maybe protosses who execute this build, might counter.

If you didn't save your replays, then probably no. But you can load all replays you have saved in sc2gears, and it will compute all stats for you, even on maps, build orders etc.
Hi all. Something just occurred to me and I wanted to see what you guys thought.
I'm #4 in my Gold league at the moment, having been placed at #60ish gold to begin with. In between, I've won 65 of 120 matches. However, my opponents have not in general been gold level players themselves. I get a lot of silver and a few bronze (and the occasional platinum) with only a sprinkling of gold players.
This got me thinking: how the heck am I ever going to end up where I should be?
The matchmaking system ensures I get a decent win record, and thus a decent number of points. Since this applies to everyone below top tier, presumably I'm either playing more than others in my league, or they're being promoted out of my way. So even though, in all likelihood, I should be in silver, I can't see how the system can ever put me there. I mean, surely it can't watch me go from #60 to #4 and then announce "You've been demoted!"
Surely the 'favoured/even' comparison and subsequent point allocation should be based on visible rank, not hidden matchmaking rank, in order for the two to have a hope of converging. Or am I missing something important?

You have to beat more players in the league above you to get promoted, by the sounds of things you saying you mostly play silver/bronze players is because that's more towards your skill level, I'd guess you were placed in gold because you beat a fair few gold but havn't had the same results when playing against Platinum players.

Sorry; can't have been clear enough: I'm not asking how I'll ever get promoted, I'm asking how will the system ever manage to put me in silver where I belong
Because the matchmaking works, I win ~50% of the time. With that and the bonus pool, I keep earning points, which pushes me up the league I'm in. Let's say Mr Protoss, who's also in the same league as me vying for the top spot, is playing all gold players. He too is winning 50% of the time, and he's getting the same points I am because points gained are based on the hidden matchmaking comparison, not his visible standing vs their visible standing. If I play more than he does, I can rise higher in the league than him, despite playing easier opponents.
Strictly speaking, I should be in silver, but the system can't realistically put me there because I'm going *UP* the gold league. It can't possibly move me from #60 gold to #4 gold and then demote me to silver; that would just look stupid - even though it's the right thing to do.
Just a quick question on cheese prevention... (probably not so quick) [not sure if this should go into a separate thread or what not)
Long story short. In tournies (like the following : http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/1on1/goldplatinum16/rankings/ ) I have no problem playing Top platinum players and beating them. I've found that this is because people are less liking to gamble on a cheese move and rather player more "standard" game rather than lose, as losing == gg norekthnxbi
But when it comes to ladder matches(where losing isn't an issue for some) I constantly find myself losing to lower gold league players because of things like : 1) Toss towering up and Void Ray rushing 2) Mass siege in base and banshee rush. etc.
Anyone got any tips on how to fight off those initial cheese rushes with a standard 3-5rax build? + expansion?
Would you please crawl up in a hole and die? If that's too much to ask, could you at least stop sucking as hard as you do now? Letting us expand would be nice, or maybe you could stop forcing us to go for a 10gate all of the time.
I'm in ~800elo diamond, and let me tell you, it doesn't get any better.
I had 5 cheese games in a row earlier today. 6 pool, cannon into VR, proxy 2gate zealot, proxy zealot into VR, then banshee rush
The best advice I can give you is to scout more. If you catch their cheese early, they'll have no chance of catching you off-guard with it and lose due to their lack of economy.
First, check for obvious warning signs like: only 6 drones in base (duh), no gateway/rax in base when you scout, Protoss building a forge before their gateway, and Terran making nothing but marines. In the vast majority of cases, these are the visible openings of a cheese.
Second, figure out what the cheese is. Check your base for proxies, scan the corner of theirs for a hidden Starport, etc.
Third, make the appropriate units / static defenses to counter it. If someone Banshee rushes you and you have 2 missile turrets and a viking, what are they going to do?
Fourth, after you fend off their cheese, expand and out-macro them. If you soundly defeated whatever they were doing, they're not gonna be able to stop you from expanding, so take advantage of it.

you cant place directly into diamond, just keep playing and you will get promoted. The minimum number of games is ~20, but it took day9 60, and i have heard of others taking hundreds

It took me ~ 100 from bronze, jumped to gold, then plat, then into mid diamond. So yea, it varies, and depends on the level of your opponent.
the way you play can be more bm that the guy who curse you , because he know you got no respect while playing him ( because you think he stupid ) , so most people understand that and do what you call BAD MANNER , in fact many people deserve it and just make fun of the angry guy.
seriously many smart ass deserve the bm , but keep making fun of them ! just wanted to say it .

Ahhh yes, it's probably the F1 key I'm accidentally hitting. I didn't even know that F1 cycled through idle workers (that should be handy). I've never looked to see where it centers because it's always right in the middle of a battle and I go back the battle field asap. Gonna have to be more careful about that, or just never have any idle workers
More questions: Do armor upgrades help against fungal growth?
How do you disable the menu buttons so you don't accidentally hit them during the game when selecting stuff?
blizz said mid september... I am curious why its taking such a long time when they already know what they are going to fix. Its not like various tournaments haven't shown us the strengths of certain units/openings why not balance asap?
Reminds me of deathknights in WoW. Everyone knew they were OPed and blizz kept playing the "too early" card and we all had to suffer many months of seeing DK domination over everything from pvp to pve.
Armors don't affect spells such as storm and FG to my knowledge
I certainly think this isn't worth a thread on its own:
I would like to request a wallpaper showing only zerg creep on the screen so I could set it on as my desktop wallpaper. Something like 1920x1200 would be greatly appreciated!
Then I could shopp it and put it as my Home Screen wallpaper for iPhone ^_^
Is it possible to play multiple races in a tournament or is that frowned upon/depends? because my zvz sucks but my zvt and zvp is good, i also have a good pvz. so in tournaments i would like to go protoss against zerg.

Depends on the tourney. From what I have seen tourneys dont let you swap races at will and usually have some rules in place against this. This is why: Say your ZvZ sucks so you play PvZ, that Z sucks at ZvP but is good at TvP so he switches to terran. Your PvT sucks but for some reason for analogy sake your ZvT is amazing so you switch to zerg. Then you both proceed to do the race switch dance until the countdown timer locks your race.
How long the Planetary fortress is going to be imba?
It's just INSANE the amount of damage it does and the very little it takes to make one.... it's just INSANE.. one planetary fortress and a few turret's makes that untouchable unless you are like 100 food ahead of the Terran...
Does anyone know if the current ladder map pool is going to change soon? It's getting really boring playing the same maps all the time. Even custom games are blistering sand and steppes of war all the time, and I don't feel the urge to wait for 5 minutes to play an other map..

Anyone on EU server has problems with getting points? I've just played like 8 3v3 games with my mates and we've got no points for any match and haven't moved in the ladder.
***Would it be super douper helpful if there were ways of assigning sub-command-groups?***
For example suppose you play Terran and have an army of Marines, Marauders, Ghosts and a Raven, then you could assign the whole army to command group (CG) '1' (CTRL-1) and then the Marines and Marauders to CG '1a' (so CTRL-1-a), the Ghosts could be assigned to '1b' and the Raven to '1c'. You can then move the army around by with 1 and in combat you can control individual unit types with 1-a or 1-b etc In fact you could use any letter/character as the hotkey for the sub-group key, so maybe you could use the letter directly below the numbers e.g. the sub-groups in CG 1 would be '1q', '1w', '1e' etc; the sub-groups in CG 2 would be '2w', '2e', '2r' etc.
Possible advantages I can think of:
1. I think this would make it a LOT easier to select unit types quickly during a battle
2. If you have two or three big armies composed of different unit types it's easy to run out of hotkeys if all you can use are numbers - there are now many more hotkey possibilities
3. Hotkeys become more meaningfully grouped up - currently I use numbers '1', '2' and '3' for the army described above and the '5', '6' and '7' for buildings etc. This is a bit crap since '1', '2', and '3' are highly related to each other

i have a small glimmer of hope that all the blizzard maps on the custom list that aren't on the ladder are being "tested" for ladder input.

I doubt they are going to change the map pool mid-season and since they havnt even annouced how long a season will be/when it ends i think we will be waiting a while for new maps.
Don't know about subgroups but I've been thinking it'd be nice to have ctrl+drag select all of the same type of units on-screen that are of the same type contained within the drag rectangle. For example, if you ctrl+drag over 2 zealots and one stalker, then all zealots and stalkers on-screen are selected. Remember, ctrl+click will select all units of the same type of the unit you clicked on (same as double-clicking). So ctrl+drag is intuitive and I think it could be useful, without unduly reducing the micro tasks that keep the game challenging.
I have an idea for lack of new maps say for one week blizzard just dumps 10 or 15 new maps that they choose from the com unity. Then they put them into the map pool, but for only a week then they take them out and have everyone vote on which one or two they like the most. have that one or two maps get permanent slots in the map pool problem solved.
I'm trying to get the Guide Three award and the only thing I need is the Free-For-All Crusher. It says to "kill 100 enemy units in a free-for-all quick match game" Which I did by going to Multiplayer, Create a Game, clicked on FFA, and brought in an AI and killed over 120 units but I didn't get the award. Can anyone help?
I'm sure this doesn't warrant creating a new thread so I'll post it here. A few days ago, I played a game PvT vs a high Diamond guy. A friend of mine was watching me play from my place (ie. behind my back). I managed to win the game but we got nuked twice.
NOW, we both swear that there never was a notification, no sound and definitely no left-side alert either. Usually I'd say I missed them but my friend was watching without the stress that you as a player have and at the very least he would have noticed, at least ONE of them, I'm sure. In-game we basically wondered where the hell all the workers had gone at my natural. The second nuke we only caught in the replay even.
I'm actually wondering if this might be a hack? There was at least one instance in the replay which made it look as if the opponent was also maphacking, however there was no HARD evidence (ie. he didn't stare at the fog of war or anything). He basically just moved out to intercept my army at one point which he might have seen on the mini-map if he was hacking I guess. I know this could very well be luck but coupled with the "silent nukes", I dunno.
In any case, what I'm asking: Has anybody had similar experiences where you swear you weren't informed about nukes?
dkh I'd have to say it's probly a blizzard bug more than a hack.. just because I've seen a few other odd bugs as well.. it's just a sound/graphic thing, and i've had the wrong sound play for the race a couple times.. terrain jacks up graphically sometimes as well so.. probly not a hack

You need to do it in a quick match game; go to multiplayer and select FFA instead of the usual 1v1, then click find game.

This is untrue. Position in your league is your displayed rating and has nothing to do with your hidden MMR. Your hidden MMR is what decides where you're placed. Once the system is confident enough that you should be in silver and reaches another evaluation point, it'll move you down.

Yes, this problem shows up every once in a while, and for some reason resetting the client doesn't do much in the way of fixing this. I personally just ignore it, good to hear though that I'm not the only one with this problem.

I always assumed that this is a problem with battlenet. I had this problem a few times but most often associated with other bnet problems as well.
Does anyone have a standard zvt build order that they would like to share?
I've been going gas pool for quite some time now and the weaknesses are pretty apparent. I used to pool hatch and hatch first isn't a standard build. I am thinking about roach expand but it's so easy to punish and no real way to work around terran's reaction (marauders).
Well they've got 4 hours to wrap up 4 best of 3s, and the games haven't tended to be long. Usually VODs are getting posted by 0900 Eastern US. I expect they'll be fine The downtime for KR bnet is probably at a different time if at all, anyway

This post to due to the topic of Terran being OP in SC2.
My main discussion here is mainly about marauders. We all know about how well marauders with concussive shells can kite and kill units with the proper micro, thus making these low-mid tier units very cost effective.
I have 3 suggestions on what Blizzard can do to make the game more balanced especially for players who go against Terran bio:
1) Marauders concussive shells should be given a cooldown period just like charge(for zealots) just so melee units stand a better chance of doing some damage before dying or just to run away. Some of you would say that there would be no difference with or without a cooldown period because slow lasts for a short duration and if the cooldown is equivalent to that time, then it's as good as no cooldown whatsoever. However, this can be improved if lets say the cooldown period is in such a way that, assuming that a marauder is standing still and shooting, its first shot has slow, second and third shots doesn't have slow, forth shot has slow and so on... Wouldn't it be as fair as a zealot charging into a battle, slicing and dicing for a while charge is on cooldown and then charge again after several hits?
2) Secondly, just as battlecruisers were supposed to have two types of upgrades in the alpha version of SC2, marauders could be given two types of attacks to choose from. The first type could be the normal concussive shell slow but deals no bonus damage to armoured units. The second type could be the normal bonus damage to armoured units but at the cost of its slow. Players can choose which type of attack they want to use under different circumstances. In addition, when a player chooses to switch a marauder from one type of attack to the other, a cooldown period has to be incurred before they can switch again. In order to distinguish the two types of attacks, distinct physical features can be added to the marauders so the players on both sides can tell which type is equipped currently and how both players can use the situation to their advantage.
3) Give marauders energies just like ghosts and give concussive shells energy costs. However, the energy of the marauder should not be greater than its hit points so that feedbacks cannot 1 hit KO a marauder with full energy.
Well that's about it. I couldn't find a specific thread to post this up on so I'm doing it here. Please give constructive comments on my suggestions and if anyone who knows a thread where this post could fit in nicely then please add the link of that thread along with your comments.
I was wondering what unit is best to tank compared to price, unitproduction and dmg.
Is it best to let the Battlecruiser tank compared to Mass Vikings/Mutas? Yea the BC got a lot of HP, but it takes a lot of time to produce and very expensive. Didnt knew if my question was a topic worthy..
Just curious about the consistency of 'stop' and 'cancel' commands.
It seems to arbitrarily vary between escape and S and I really can't figure out the rhyme or reason to it-- and it always causes me to take two clicks for what should be one or to screw up.

BCs get a lot of HP/second from SCV repairs, so if you're repairing, it's best to let them tank
dont think it'll be a patch. EU doesnt have that breaking news and it just makes more sense to wait with the patch till this months GSL is over. or else all strategies will change, ppl will complain about the patch not coming like a day sooner or w/e and i dont think thats what blizz wants.
or maybe there just going to try the patch in america and see how it goes
I was thinking a bit about Zergs weakness early game, i mostly relate it to:
A) - Zergs inability to scout a walled-off player. B) - Zergs weakness to certian buils that unless you are prepared it is like ly to mean GG. C) - Zergs detection ability is a bit lacking.
Now tweaking the game to fix this would be pretty hard, i feel it is pretty hard-coded into the game and what units/abilities there is. I was also looking for fixes that does not make zerg rushes or zerg late game to powerful, for example doubling the queens health and damage would make defending against different early pushes easier but that would make Queen rushes powerful again.
So what i am thinking about is a makro mechanic, something similar to Scans. I was thinking about giving Creep Tuomors a new ability: Spawn Creep Sensor.
Every Creep Tumor would have two abilities, both on say a 30 seconds cooldown after the CT was spawned so you cant use them right away. After using one or the other ability you would no longer be able to use either again.
The Creep Sensor (CS from now on) could be spawned anywhere on the map, off creep and inside FoWm much like you can drop a scan anywhere. The CS takes 3 seconds to build to completion but during build time it gives vision as large as a CT. Upon completion it also reveals cloaked/burrowed units and start to spread creep. It is just as easy to kill as a CT.
Now i am just a plat player, and P at that, so i am not 100% sure how well this would work in the game. It would add a new dimension to zerg macro play, when do you take energy to spawn a CT instead of spawnign larva? Do you invest in a second queen early game just for this? If you forget your larvae injection you could use extra energy to throw down some CT's to use later for scouting/detection. But for each CS you want to use you have to think ahead and spawn CT's, and considering that they would be stationary and very fragile they would be less than great as detectors, ecpesially since they could be killed during the 3second build time.
But with skill they would definatly be able to by the Z time if he is being banshee/DT rushed.
Or, would this just give the Z way way to much map vision?
Hey guys, newbie here but just wanted to say love the site and loving the GSL at the mo! Hope I dont offend anyone but after watching so many commentaries I felt the need to share this. Makes me laugh everytime I hear him say it!
I don't know where else to post this so this topic seemed like a good idea... do you guys think a rage thread dedicated to rageposts would be a good idea? A place where you can just vent about how fucking no skill X strat is and how everyone who plays Y should kill themselves and only Z is the truly skilled race (hehe).
Every time I get done laddering and visit TL I feel like posting, but because I am bad I have nothing to contribute! Thoughts on this idea, anyone? Or does it already exist somewhere... a ranting thread.
Just a random question for someone who has been out of the scene for a while. Is testie known to be playing sc2? I'd almost guarantee he is (even if he says he isn't), but I know he quit BW for a bit, so I was just curious.
He always seemed like a player who liked anonymity, though.

I've tried this, but P just doesn't go with my style. I feel confined and limited when not playing zerg.

[H][Q] Preparing For CONUS Play While in Afghanistan
So obviously if I am in Afghanistan I am also on a satellite internet connection. (I.e. 1000-1400ms Ping) I can play on Battle.Net but the lag as you might anticipate is horrendous. So my question is:
What type of things would you do to prepare if you had this sort of connection?
I am currently using YABOT to practice builds/timings etc. I also have been laddering regardless of the lag and doing well considering the hinderance, but micro is nigh impossible.
I'd would also be interested to hear if you think playing with said lag could turn out to be a good training tool for when I get home. (analogy: Runners training at high altitudes so when the compete at sea level there body is accustomed to having less oxygen available, a bit of a stretch =D )
What other tools/exercises would you incorporate? Would you continue laddering or do you think it will have some negative effect?

Depending on how long you're staying there. If you leave in a week then I would just drop sc2 for a week, however if you're staying for a while you might as well practice. As for the micro problem, I say just forget micro all together. Depending on which rank you are you can just forget micro and try to win with pure macro. This will accomplish 3 things:
1) your macro will be great 2) it will save you a lot of frustration 3) when you get back to normal lag macro will be easy since you mastered that, so you can focuss more on micro.

I don't know if it works in your area but TLO and others have used Battle Ping to help manage bad latency. I don't know your income but another option is to get a second account that you use for training while in this situation so as not affect you primary's record. Not sure about how the lag would affect training, Huk learned a lot of great early game skills because he originally had a comp that died if the game went on too long. This might be a little different since the delay would throw off micro. It might help though for you to improve your macro, using it to compensate for having to pretty much A move your army.
Hope this helps
EDIT: Ninja'd by Amestir and he put it more succinctly than I did.

YABOT is great, take the time to practice basic mechanics, macro and such. Working on mouse precision and speed is good as well. Once you are comfortable with hotkeys, stop using then and use the mouse only for a bit to build precision. Watching replays nad VoDs is a good time investment as it can show you insight into some of the current state of the game.
Thank you to all for the useful information. As for Battleping it really couldn't improve my situation that much, I am the ISP for our unit here and the problem lies in Txing to the spacecraft and reTXing back to the base station in Atlanta. I suppose it could help get my traffic expedited once it gets on that side of the world. But I doubt it could help much, especially thinking of the 100 or so users trying to surf pr0n while I am trying to play =D
Good points on the macro game, I was expecting that somewhat, you hit the nail on the head when you said, "having to pretty much A move your army." Lol QFT. I have about 2 months left in country, been here for almost a year now and SC2 came just in time for me to have something to work at and make the time pass.
@Seide Thanks for the tip about not using hotkeys, never thought of that. Will do. I would say mouse precision is def. a weakness, I am a hotkey fanatic.
If anyone else thinks up anything good let me know.
Stolen from another board, a friend played a "maphacker", I thought it was interesting, watch the replay at 8x speed and do a camera lock on the terran player.
He left his camera locked on his bases the whole game. While he was microing reapers in my base He never scouted/scanned. Yet he countered my colossi with vikings. After he got my main base, he didnt attack my expo because my army was too big. As soon as i started my observer, he started his started his starport.
SC2 can affect absent-minded people playing BW (*cough*), into optimizing a hydra-based build, while consistently putting lair before den. Hehe, way to forget BW den doesn't need lair.

I'd like to know this too. I lost to a 4 Warpgate because of this X_X
Couple of suggestions (not sure if they have been suggested already):
Warp Prism with recall similar to that of the arbiter. Recalls friendly units in a small AoE (similar to the area of force field) to current warp prism location. Upgradable at the cyber core. 100-100 research. Would be cooldown or energy based obviously. IF energy based would add some nuances as good ghost use could stop from using them to recall units to flank. However feedback could be too strong, so I think it should have 50 energy max and the ability should cost either 50 or 40 energy.
Queen inject should be cooldown based and cost either NO energy or much less energy then it does currently. Maybe 5 energy, (though I favour 0 energy) with a 35s or 40s cd. Thus one queen can only inject one hatch at a time roughly. If you keep 1 queen in a single hotkey you can tell when the cooldown is close to finishing and thus its a soft timer on when to inject again.
One might think this change is making the zerg macro mechanic less forgiving as you cannot use 1 queen to spam inject several hatcheries if you havent been able to it has enough energy, but you have to look at what you are gaining.
In the current game, larvae inject is necessary to compete with the other races. Ideally 25 energy every 40s per queen/hatch REQUIRED.
If this was 0 energy every 40s (or even 5/40) this would allow for the queen to use the other spells more frequently. When the first queen pops out early game, one would have the option of saving for transfuse or quickly spreading creep. You could transfuse the 2nd queen or a roach to help tank against a reaper rush or transfuse that spine crawler when being 2 gated.
Not suggesting both these changes should be implemented as is, numbers can always be tweaked.
Another quick question. My 0 hotkey does not work. That is, I press ctrl 0 on a unit and it is not bound. The little button which appears over the hud also does not appear with the unit I tried to bind. However, if I fill up all 9 hotkeys, the 0 hotkey button does appear over the hud, but I can't bind any units to it. What do you think is wrong? I'm playing on a laptop, btw.
While watching replays, one can select player's vision by using dropdown box or E-1-2 hotkeys, however in most casted games commentators often switch to player's vision in a way that player's name is also shown in the center of the screen, and the dropdown box still shows "Everyone's vision". What's the hotkeys for that? Couldn't find it.
Anyone able to translate this? Found it at another board which has.. questionable credibility. According to that it says:
Starcraft set a stepping stone for Internet Cafe industry to expand dramatically; which in return generated "e-sports" and a title called "pro gamer" Before release, Blizzard disputed licensing rights with "KeSPA" (Korean e-Sports Players Association). GomTV steps in and monopolizes the license. GomTV hires shit-tier commentators and amateur quality broadcasting techniques compared to KeSPA which hired top-tier professionals in the industry. In addition, Blizzard demanded that Internet Cafes pay 233won (20 cents) an hour for having SC2 installed on any PC. SC2 never surpassed rank 11 due to Blizzard's ignorant treatment to gamers and the internet cafe industry Little over half of internet cafes in korea have SC2 in their library. The remaining half has created an anti-sc2 movement. Meanwhile, GomTV tries their best to make all loose ends meet by launching a global SC2 tournament Despite their failure in our country, they have sold over a million copies in foreign soil in 2010 and have considered SC2 as one of the most successful games to be ever released

Just wondering, are there any postcats of starcraft games?
For most Vods/tourney streams, the casters are detailed enough that you don't have to be able to see what's going on. I'm just wondering if someone tried to make an audio only cast

You have to hold down V.
And just to add to that, you have to select a unit or building belonging to the player whose vision you want to show, then hold V.

I know detection shows hallucinations in a different color so its obvious the unit is hallucinated. However, once shown a hallucination, if you engage in to a battle are non-hallucinated units auto-targetted? Or do hallucinated units still tank damage as if they were a regular unit unless manually targetted.
This may sound rather stupid but can you somehow try hacks just vs. the AI? I'm curious as to the ahcks that are currently out and I would like to see what is possible and what is not; partly just to settle my curiosity, partly to know 'what I'm up against' when I face a hacker.
Needless to say, I would never hack vs. another real player, as I have a very strong stance that it's beyond pathetic and something 12 year olds do to feel good about their abilities ._.
But yea, can you try it vs. AI without risk of getting banned?

Unplug your internet connection and play as guest. I am not fully aware of what kind of techniques Blizzard has in their anti-hacking arsenal but this is probably as safe as you can get. Just make sure you turn off the hacks before logging in to battle.net or Warden will probably snap your account in half.
Alternatively you could try creating custom maps that emulate the hacking experience if you want to be absolutely sure there will be no consequences, but I guess this wouldn't be ideal if you're looking to find out what is possible and what is not in ladder games.

This is an idea I had a while back and I think it would be pretty cool, Dont know how well it would imbalance the game though, but currently I think zerg suffers alot from AOE damage due to hydralisk being extremely slow off the creep and tanks, doing quite a bit a damage although the nerf should help however, I still think it would be cool if fungle growth worked two ways, in that such if you cast it on your own units it heals them for the same amount of damage it does over time any thoughts? obviously the movement impairing abilities would obviously still be in effect

You cant get any achievements when offline. You need to be connected to bnet to get credit. You get the bronze/gold/silver for killing extra units/doing it faster/losing less units depending on which challenge you are doing, I remember them being stated pretty clearly

when there is litteraly no hole for your overseer to pop in then he went WAY overboard with his cannons and you're so far ahead, u can take the whole map and at that point it doesnt really matter what he throws at you.
On September 25 2010 19:55 shin ken wrote: how do i scout as zerg when the enemy has a million cannons?
Don't forget about changelings. If you have an overseer, you might as well use the energy it accumulates to make changelings (or contaminate), otherwise it will go to waste. Detectors like photon cannons will reveal the changeling for what it is, but units and static defenses will still not auto-attack them. You should be able to get some scouting information before the changeling is taken out. They only cost 50 energy so you could spam 4 of them from a fully charged overseer, if necessary. Also overseers have more armor and move faster than overlords so they're less vulnerable to a few cannon shots.

The download does take quite awhile, especially if you do not disable the "peer-2-peer" option (at least for me and many others) for some reason when peer-2-peer is enabled on my connection I get throttled for upload/download speeds and it just craaawwwwwlllls. Your mileage may vary.
However, if you are a collector of cardboard boxes and pretty pictures, definitely go buy the hard copy. If this doesn't really matter to you then the digital download is fine, and you can install it multiple locations but only 1 connection to battle.net at a time!
Q: I'm interested of creating a US account in addition to my current account on EU. I'm wondering if i need to purchase a US version of the game to be able to install a US account or if i can simply purchase Starcraft II from any region and still be able to activate the cd-key in another region.
Edit:
Nevermind i recived an answer elsewhere. Appearently you need a US version of the game.
Something I've wanted to post about...but didn't think warranted making a new thread are custom games. Ok. So, you're in the lobby to a custom game. The person leaves the lobby for whatever reason. (Probably because they've viewed your incredible profile and are shitting themselves). Right, they leave...you're in the lobby on your own. The timer is counting down.
You have to log out to leave the empty lobby?!
I wish blizzard would fix this. I play a lot of custom games when I don't feel like laddering and the amount of times this happens is ridiculous...having to log in and out just gets so tedious.
I was wondering if you guys listen to StarCraft II Podcasts. Is there anything out there worth checking out? I really would like to get my StarCraft II fix while I'm driving to work, or in the intervals I have at work.
Sorry ppl, i think i need someone to pm me, im still not quite sure how this forum works, everything to me appears everywhere.
(now the closed thread) also this on my screen was on the top of the 2nd page? i didnt really read the date. I was just very emotionally moved when i read nerf 4 gate. (and nerf 4gate seems to be a popular topic, to which +5sec hell with 1.1 patch)

i have both, you just goto battle.net> log in> activate the game (na region)
now in sc you can pick with region you want in the log in but you do lose you stats and pictures =(
also practise mode is not fun, too slow, too many rocks.... so many many rocks.
Do people remember patch14? I think it was the patch right before the roach 2 supply nerf. I feel like that was the best patch and I think some of the other top tier players felt it was the most balanced patch. I wonder why blizzard f'ed everything up after that? It seemed like they were going in the right direction.
Hi all, I have a question about the campaign. How do you play the missions that you "skip" over? Do you have to re-play the entire campaign to play all missions or is there a way that I'm just missing?

I have a random idea about an Ultralisk/Zerg buff. To be honest, I haven't thought it through all the intricacies, and I lack high level play so naturally, it might not be very balanced at all. What got me thinking about it was 1) The Ultralisk AI is just horrible. One Zergling can almost appear to block an Ultralisk from attacking. 2) The Collosus, being a massive unit, is able to walk over other Protoss land units.
Taking these two items into account, why not make the Ultralisk able to walk over all land units (or just the player's units or at least Zergling/Roaches)? I think this would give Zergs a considerable buff and improve Zerg battlefied micro/strategy. Anyways, I thought this would be the right place to put this idea since (as it shows) I haven't fleshed out the idea too much.
I have an idea for a new thread in the SC2 Tourneys forum but wanted to post here first as I'm fairly (~1 mo) new to TL. As an old man of SC (29 yo) with a job and some other interests besides SC2, I don't really have the time to watch many (or any) games from all the SC2 tourneys that are happening. I haven't actually watched a single one other than HDH Invitational and the Razer King of the Beta Hill - I'd rather spend my time watching Day[9] and practicing. That said, I'm very interested in the pro-scene. It'd be awesome if we had a thread that just summarized results (like, ladder results from RO16 through final) for every major tournament. Apologies if such a thread / page on liquipedia exists, but I have not found it in about an hour of poking around. I saw this request to move results to first page of threads, but I want to go even farther - have ALL the tourney's results in ONE thread! Would really help those of us without a ton of free time to keep track of the proscene.
On a related note, I think it would be awesome if some caster would do an 'NFL RedZone' style cast for tournaments. Take maybe the quarter-, semi-, and finals, (and any other matches with big upsets or awesome play), take the most exciting/pivotal moments, and create a highlight reel so you can feel like you know what happened in the tournament and only have to watch maybe an hour or so of video.
If you guys think these ideas are legit I'm going to create a couple of new threads and hope someone will take care of these

A highlight reel would be amazing! I don't have time to watch 100 games a week, but would benefit greatly from watching highlights of the best plays or interesting tactics that happened in each round. Although usually any new and exciting tactics seen in these games are quickly discussed on the forum
Don't know if anyone ever though of this and definitely does not deserve its own thread but...
I thought of a somewhat creative way to bring back reavers without bringing back reavers. It will make sense in a second.
What if, instead of just interceptors, carriers could build a max of 2 or 4 reaver bombs that exploded for aoe damage but take up an interceptor slot. That way carriers would always have interceptors and could go 8 interceptors, or (if max of 2) 6 interceptor 2 bombs, or (if max of 4) 4 interceptor, 4 bomb. Make it an upgrade at the fleet beacon for like 150/150 as well. You wouldn't even need to cut interceptor damage as you would have less of them if you made bombs.
This would make carriers very good in small numbers as harrassment against mineral lines... 2 bombs exploding in the probes/drones/scvs's and the interceptors cleaning a few up then retreating before a response. Bombs could hit air as well, making them a decent response for toss to voids (I am low level but don't think protoss have a great response to void rays... this could help having some heavier air damage aside from just getting more voids than the enemy.)
Just an idea I had wanted to see what people though.

It would prob make carriers ridiculously over powered. Giving them a bomb like that would let them take on large amoutns of hydra/stalkers/marines with no problem. It would make the carrier into the protoss version of the 2 armor 1 food roach ie you would see it in every game every match up, and if the protoss could get away with it they wouldn't make any other units
Well maybe make it 1 bomb they can make on a minute cooldown, and the bomb takes up 2 or 4 interceptor spaces. I just miss reaver bombs but not necessarily reavers.

I like this idea a lot and think it could absolutely be implemented in a balanced way. However, as day[9] said on the state of the game yesterday, what SC2 needs is for every race to have a bunch of units that are broken-good. Terran obvi already have it, so give Protoss reaver-carriers, and then think of some cool broken-good units for Zerg.

Woot! TL-shirts FTW! I'm just waiting for the day that I'm wearing my shirt and I randomly run into someone else who knows what it means. Good times will be had.
Does anyone know if there are any logs made of chats in game? Some guy messaged me when I was playing about my post in the Training Partner thread, and being spoiled by MSN I neglected to actually write down his details/take a screenshot right then and there. Whoops.
I checked the SC2 folder in documents, but couldn't see any obvious chat-log folder/file.

I don't think there are logs of chats and if there are they aren't for you. Would love to have that feature. I believe there were 3rd party programs for this in Brood War but Battle.net 2.0 is a whole other piece of pie so I haven't found any for it yet and I don't think there are.
Howdy all, I have SC2 but have been losing interest in it over the last little while. Being an Old Guard from the first game this is depressing me a wee bit so I`ve been looking for people to play with online. I found you guys through Google so I`m wonder if anyone would be interested as a playing partner or something. I`m not really into tournaments, never played one through Starcraft before but there`s a first time for everything. I`m already in a gaming community by the name of Silver 5 Aces, but not alot of my buds play the game. So, all in all, I`m looking for folks to play with.
Heya Fetch. This is a thread that I'm sure you'd be interested in reading. Look someone up in the first post or add your own info to the list and I'm sure someone will get a hold of you.
i just want to say i am so angry at the point system for sc2 1v1. I am new to the game and have won 30 1v1s and lost about 50. Yet I have 0 points and even when I beat players who are favored over me I am lucky to get 2 pts. Is there ever going to be a standard amount of points you get for winning a 1v1 ?
That's what Overlords and their mutations are for... unless you don't know and that makes you a poor zerg player. I don't even play zerg much... I prefere protoss.
On the note of void rays and other such nonsense try to think out of the box when dealing with them. You don't need OP units for everything, SC2 is just like SC and BW it's a giant game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Once you figure out a units weakness just utilize it in every strategy, be maliable to any situation. An easy way to do this is go through the Challenges, Bronze level. It gives big hints of each races strengths and weaknesses. Sticking to just void rays gets boring, and I know ways for all three races to counter them.
Leath in that thread added the US at the beginning, but with this method you can find anyone from any server. However, I found that common names are harder to find
For example, if I google " DayNine battle.net/sc2 ", I can find Day9's character code.
Hey guys , I just made a Starcraft Calendar desktop application based on TL Calendar but i think it needs a little beta test before full release. I already had a few friends to test it , but unfortunately none of them are Sc2 players so it would be nice to hear somethings from you guys.
It's semi open source at the moment. All code files are released , I'm only keeping the art/styles to myself for a while as they are not my own stuff anyway ( Copy/Paste/Edit Official Blizzard art etc , I'll release them too in future (probably with full release ) )
It's all done in Visual Studio 2010 using Wpf / C# . It's more like a Winforms app written in Wpf , if you know what i mean. Hardly uses the strength of Wpf technology except all eye candy stuff. No data binding awesomeness or etc.
I also have wyBuild implemented for future updates/patches but not fully functional at the moment. So don't freak out when it tries to connect my website to check for updates.
If you try it , PLEASE let me know what you think about it and report any bugs / errors. I mean that's the whole point of beta You can PM me for any feedback , and I'll probably open a thread about it if beta goes well for any further talk and stuff.
Would you please crawl up in a hole and die? If that's too much to ask, could you at least stop sucking as hard as you do now? Letting us expand would be nice, or maybe you could stop forcing us to go for a 10gate all of the time.
Sincerely,
P
Haha +1
Cant stand how the early game is so boring. Late game is collosi wars.
