the octoshape plug-in...well, it bothers that i had to download yet ANOTHER plug-in, and i will probably have to continue to download updates for this plug-in. that's ok though, the stream quality with this plug-in is awesome, and practically lag free.
however, i didn't realize how much trouble this plug-in is. i opened the MLG stream and two octoshape plug-in processes open up consuming 200 MB memory each... that's a total of 400 MB. that's absolutely insane. i'm not going to start doing math, but that's a lot of memory. also, the plug-in uses your computer to repeat the stream to other computers. use of your computer + your bandwidth to feed other computer. and....for some reason for me, the plug-in doesn't close itself after you're done watching the stream. that's not cool...
your thoughts now that you know this?

Octoshape is kind of a bittorrent streaming system. You share your stream with others it consumes upload as well. Its not working for every browser and its a bit annoying to setup. I always had trouble to get it running. Suddenly it was working for about 3-4 month and now its in bugmode again. Really annoying thingy but yea streamqual is kinda good and no lags, but i still prefer livestream because of my bad upload speed :p

I know I can't even get the stream to work with my normal browser (Firefox). Only with crappy ol' IE.
|
octoshape only consumes bandwidth when you have the stream running. when you close the stream the process still runs, but no longer sends or receives data
|
I don't know why so many people have problems with Octoshape, I have been using it for years watching Gotfrag.tv then MLG tourneys. It allows MLG to put out a High quality stream without having to have a huge upload speed or a 3rd party website to host their stream.
As for turning itself off, by default it doesn't but if you right click on the icon in the tray you can go to the settings and change that. While you're there you might also want to turn off Octoshape opening when windows starts.

I have no problem with it in Firefox. Make sure your Firefox is updated and you have MLGpro and Octoshape's website Allowed if you use noscript. If you use adblock plus you might also have to turn it off.

Doesn't work with my opera anyone know how i can fix that? i have to run it in IE i don't wanna.
|
I personally throttle the upstream of it, as i cannot afford to upload so much. (We pay for data usage here)
It is quite frustrating to use, have plenty of hassles getting it to work.

I had it working fine in both Chrome 6.0 and Firefox, once I clicked "allow" to the like 10 different security popups that showed up.

I just don't get why you have to pay $10 extra for an HD MLG stream when you are using octoshape. I could see if you have to dedicate tons of bandwidth to upload to each person, but with octoshape a lot of it is users streaming to users.

The issues I had with Octoshape during the MLG Raleigh tournament were actually being caused by Java. Not only did it pop up its "Do you want to run this" thing in the background (so I didn't notice it until I decided to try closing/reopening my browser) but it also worded it so that pressing "No" was the right answer. Of course, I thought to myself, "Yes, I want to see this", which in fact blocked it.
I'm not a user interface genius but even I know that basic human interface design is to ask to allow, not to block >.>

I hate octoshape simply because of the occasional rewind of the stream for a brief moment. It's very annoying. T.T

Because MLG has to make money somewhere to be able to put events like this on. The site I work with requires a donation to get a direct HD download of the videos we put out. The download itself doesn't cost us that much, but if it wasn't for those donations we literally wouldn't be able to create the videos in the first place.

The HD stream also had a DVR feature. Octoshape also isn't free for them to use, They have to buy a license from them which is fairly expensive IIRC.

yeah, that's very true. the octoshape plug-in is expensive, and i'm sure if you want rights to use HD, it costs even more. hence, they have to charge you. at the same time though, we watch anywhere from 2-5 minutes of commercials between matches (i didn't count, that was a rough estimate).
it'd be great if octoshape was available to the community, the stream quality is really amazing even though it is a huge headache, and somewhat controversial. i think the issue is the combination of:
1. octoshape plug-in 2. octoshape charges for its use (i suppose that's fair because its commercial free from their end) 3. commercials from original stream 4. paying for HD content (MLG has sponsors...if i'm watching commercials then maybe i deserve HD?)

Octoshape works fine with my pc. Good stream quality, and most important NO_LAG. I always have lag when watching other streams if they have more then 3k viewers. This is so annoying, so i am very glad i could view the MLG for hours without any lag
|
Octoshape is also buggy, because during the IEM I had several streams running (GLHF.tv and the IEM one) and turned off the sound for both stream while doing something else and suddenly I heard the sound of an ad which was running on one of the streams. So I really hate that plugin, because it screws with my computer when I dont want it to be screwed with.

Agreed. On Livestream and Ustream there are always problems when the viewer count gets too high but after a few initial difficulties, the MLG stream was solid as a rock. I never had a second of lag or rewinds or anything. It seems like a decent amount of people had trouble with it, but neither I nor any of my friends did. I definitely have no problem with octoshape.
