Utter darkness seems to be relatively easy using mass 3/3 voidrays with mass cannons. If you are having trouble sacrifice the artifact early so you are only defending 2 entrances with cannons instead of 3.
Piercing the shroud was the same for me, ended up just running for the end of the level with raynor and spamming the net things on the hybrid.

And what did you do about the detecting hybrids (the white ones that shoot air)?
Honestly on In Utter Darkness I can't even get to the void ray event before I'm totally screwed. I just can't tell what I'm doing wrong. I'm pretty close to saturated if not completely saturated on both mineral lines and I'm pumping units so fast I'm pretty much broke the whole time but no matter what I do on brutal the hybrid wave that rolls in just as the void rays shows up just kicks my ass. I'd love to try this 'mass void ray + cannon' build a few people have suggested but I don't even last long enough to build a void ray.

supernova because i am superdumb, i cant beat that mission ;( any tips?

They don't detect in that level, just in the one where you have to free the three protoss. That or it majorly glitched out for me.
Piercing the shroud gave me almost no issues. As far as escaping goes, you can almost always just run past monsters and the zerg and protoss will just fight each other and let you by.
As a random update, I'm on All-In right now, fighting with no Nydus. Still fighting with no mercs, upgrades, or research. I have certainly played easier missions....
For the person who had lots of problems with the laser drill mission, still having issues? Or take care of it? I found it exceedingly easy personally. Though for lots of missions difficulty depends a lot on the units you have previously unlocked, this wasn't one of them for me.

Personally I had alot of trouble on gates of hell. It was more based off a lack of siege tanks but the end was pretty dang hard. I found supernova to be easy if you do an air rush to the top. All in...well abuse of siege tanks.

I built zero siege tanks. I massed marines and medics, getting the 12 war pigs as available. Only ran out to rescue the first couple drop pods. Spammed first damage then armor. Around the time I ran out of resources at that starting base I had plenty to push. If you don't it is relatively easy to move to the small base southeast of your start for a few more. The easiest, best, or fastest method? Probably not, but it works.

in Gates of Hell I activated the later drop pod drops (from the starport on) with a Mule...I wasn't able to rescue many though.
I also upgraded the barracks to drop troops at the raly point so I dropped spectres at Warfields BC and had them nuke the nydus... not the most effective but definitely the safest for me.
For All in after about 50 tries I finally had a critical mass of tanks and just covered the upper plateau with Barracks so nydus worms couldn't bust up there

I facepalmed as soon as I got to the post which said "thor stunning kerrigan", I hadn't thought about abilities after massing ghosts: shift-click spammed and discovered a few seconds later that Kerrigan was immune to snipe. Then my ghosts died.
I regret picking the hive mind emulator now, it's pretty useless given the gas cost and since any ultras in range are probably dead to tank fire already. I ended up using it on ovies to replace lost supply depots.

Medics?

It's not that, I was trying to use the emulators to get the ultras before they had any chance to soak up tank fire. Which doesn't really work when your tanks outrange the emulator. I wasn't really concerned about using ultras to block the ramp.

I didn't think any were particularly hard, but Maw of the Void was a fucking bitch when I was going for the achievements. The one where you cant lose a unit inside of the damage aura. It took absolutely forever, I think it took me about an hour and a half on brutal. Then I finally kill the main thing and I am greeted by the victory screen: Units lost: 1. FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
So I had to redo the bitch of a mission on hard again, needless to say I was both shitting bricks and screaming.

All In followed by Supernova.
Supernova's just annoying on brutal because you can't get a big army and you have to resort to cheap tricks like + Show Spoiler +waiting until the fire kills most of the protoss defenders and then swooping in with banshees on a suicide mission
|
I find it weird that people are having so much trouble with Supernova, I did it in one try and did all the achievements in one go as well. All I did was constantly spam banshees and I finished it right as the fire overtook the first base.
For me it was All In and Utter Darkness since my micro doesn't help me as much vs the constant swarm and more dependent on the right unit comp and position.
|
You did this on brutal? Did you complete all of the objectives or bypass them for the boss? I have read (though haven't bothered to verify) that you don't get credit for the win as far as the achievement goes unless you complete all optional objectives too.

Not hard at all.

Oh and if ur worried about high templars u can snipe them with irradiate, before you move in to kill the vault.

Use Phoenixes to lift the early hybrid waves if they give you trouble. Otherwise, Colos + maybe some meatshield Zeals rip up everything.

Took a couple tries for me to get supernova.
If you dont want to use a cheesy tactic, this is what I did:
Go marauder + medics to tank. Get banshees for increased ground damage, banshees rip shit apart. I had wraiths to take care of their air units. I had like a controlgroup of 5 or smth. Focus on phoenix and warp prism.
A tip: you can take out the top left base almost immediatly as the game starts, lots of free minerals there.
For some reason I was really frustrated on the great train robbery, because I tried to use MnM to take the train out. Switched to marauders and diamondbacks and it was ezpz, needed some anti air to kill ravens.
Maw of the void pissed me off. Just really disliked this mission. Just the general look of the terrain made it kind of annoying. Also no science vessel doesnt really make it easier.
All in certainly gave me a run for the money, i went with the nydus version. In the end though, siege tanks takes the day. Just make sure to keep em safe behind a wall of bunkers/flame thrower towers(or PF if you have that). Make sure you have the artifact covered also because in the end the zerg just start going gungho about it.
Engine of desutrction was a fun mission, took me a couple tries. I went with diamondbacks, marauders and medics. All you need really is anti armor units. Took the top left base for minerals. 3rd base was def worst where your units actually stay behind and shoot the buildings while the Odin is walking up a hill where you have no vision and is taking massive fire.
Piercing the shroud mission was really fun too, a little change from the base building ones and where you actually had to micro and not just 1a2a3a.
