I beat it without SVs. Wasn't easy, but it's not impossible.
For me "All in" was the hardest. I had restarted and reloaded many times on a lot of the missions, but "All in" was the only mission I passed with researches. Just couldn't beat it without them.

Engine of destruction was pretty easy once I got science vessels and upgraded my goliaths. For some reason I feel like I'm the only one that relied heavily on goliaths. The upgrade to make them be able to shoot air and ground at the same time is diiiiiiirty.

All in is actually pretty easy once you figure it out, even on Brutal. I tried it 6 times with different strats until i settled with mass tanks (No broodlords/Mutas for me). Just wall off using bunkers and flame turrets and get 200/200 of 3/3 tanks, then just wait till its over. You dont even need to use the nova if you do this right and you dont need to kill the nydus worms. Get about 4 SCVs in both paths and set them to auto repair. Remake tanks, bunkers and flame turrets as necessary.

In Utter Darkness, you need to have a perfect start with as many kills as possible. Or else you will be behind when your base gets overran, even if you kill all leftover lings.
Supernova and Allin are easy once you figure them out. if you know how to abuse Siege Tanks. I beat super nova with banshees, 2 calls of merc vikings, 4 Siege Tanks+2 merc tanks, just advance step by step with siege+unsiege and guard your tanks with Banshees+vikings.

The Train Robbery one and Engine of Destruction. I imagine Supernova would have been hard, but I cheated and read the Fire-Cheese strat on here before I started :x
I have the 3 Char Missions left to do. Can't wait to try out All In tonight :D

Honestly, I felt like Maw of the Void was the most annoying and frustrating for me. The first few fields were easy, but then when it was down to the final 2 or 3 I kept trying to finesse my way through them with my 16 battlecruisers, trying to keep all of them alive. It was just annoying watching them die in the fields to junk like 2 carriers and void rays and an archon, so I just kept reloading from a save or going in and out of the fields to get healed by SV, only to go back in to find the same junk already respawned. I felt like the bcs should have easily handled any enemy, especially with how slow and stupid they are. Then I just said screw it and went all in on the last two fields. Lost a lot of them, but was still able to kill the fields.

This is so weird looking at everyone's hard and easy.
For me The Great Train Robbery was a 1-shot, and I did it as soon as it was available. Simply massed diamondbacks, collecting all 6 freebies asap, microed them and repaired so I didn't lose any, and returned to my base in between trains.
I didn't have much trouble with Supernova either, just abused banshees all game. Pushed to the next available toss base, mined it out, pushed again up the ramp into the base near the artifact, continued massing banshees and then moved to the side of the map and blew away all the cannons between me and it, then took it out. My banshees were at 3/2 or something at that point. My bases got raided a lot while my banshees were away from home and I just loaded the scvs into the CC, lifted and ran away without defending mostly.
I replayed Supernova on Brutal again because I didn't get all the artifacts. I found it even easier to totally ignore the first available toss base and move to the available 'expo' patches along the bottom twice while building up more science vessels and banshees (and a few vikings) then take the Toss base at the bottom right-ish without much of a fight. I agree the templar are annoying but micro'd banshees can take being stormed a few times, and after that there aren't any templar left.
Outbreak was a cakewalk.
Media Blitz was incredibly easy.
All the Ariel missions were super easy.
I didn't find Maw of the Void too tough, abused Yamato Cannon like nobody's business. Abused the free DTs I got even harder. It really helped to get the armour upgrades give extra health tech, regular BC health is already huge and with +15% on that they're incredible at surviving. Just got them set up outside the rip-field, planned which direction I was gonna go in and then moved in a line annihilating anything that posed a threat to me that my DTs hadn't already murdered.
I found welcome to the jungle pretty hard.
Piercing the Shroud was kinda.. interesting. Not hard really and doable in one straight run without saving I think if you're really good, but I needed to save and reload quite a few times to make sure I didn't run out of troops. Then again I did manage to get all the achievements and the feat of strength from here on brutal
And I found In Utter Darkness to be a total nightmare.
Engine of Destruction was god-awful too. I'll echo the earlier poster who said that the order in which you attempt these missions really makes a difference. If I'd have had some decent tech and units (orbtial cc, auto-refineries, tech-reactors, lol-vessels, vikings, banshees) then this wouldn't have been tough at all.
The first mission, Liberation Day wasn't a cakewalk either. It's really easy to just run out of guys if you don't micro them right.
I'm just on the gates of hell right now and it's a little tough. I haven't given it a solid attempt yet though, I just loaded it up really early this morning to see how it was.

Clearly engine of destruction for me. I played without having any of the medvac-tech-line units (so no medvac no banshees no BCs). I had vikings which helped with the BCs at the end but i guess i could have just as well made wraith. And to make it even more fun on top of that i hardly had any protoss line research at that point which didnt help to make it any easier either. And with all that tychus just keeps running right into those fortified postions ... in the end i just kept throwing a nuke at every entrenchment to force those tanks to unsiege and the other units to clump up which made it manageable for my tychus-supporting medic marine marauder force.
|
@icemind,
basically ur telling us that u tried to play the mission with minimum upgrades and unit choices lol.
but ya, mere marine n medic is bad for this mission because of siege tanks and the lack of back doors that you can abuse.

I beat it with pure BC, no vessel first try. :|

I finished nova with marine/medivac and tanks had no problems with it, I didnt make a single banshee .
|
Definitely engine of destruction if you don't have easy tech for it. I spent a few hours on it reloading and trying out different stuff. All In I got to 99.7% on my first try and just reloaded it a few times and eventually stalled to win.

Air version of all in was quite difficult until I put together a better strategy while reading.
My key-points
+ Show Spoiler +4 viking patrol behind my minerals.
Few dozen marines/medics for shock troops in base.
3+ flame turret 2+ bunker 2+ turret both sides.
2 groups of splash damage vikings.
Second command center at the start to spam SCVs.
4+ SCVs at each choke at all times.
First time with this strategy was a very convincing win, no scare at the end or anything.
Marines kill Kerrigan. Vikings kill flyer.

I have had to work all week so I am not as far ahead as I would like, but I'm about to invade Char on Brutal, and have beaten every other mission up until this point, with no upgrades or research or mercs. Going to try to beat the entire game without any of that junk before I go back and get it all. So at the very least everything up to this point is beatable with the bare minimum (not going to make any claims about what units you need available from previous missions).
As far as missions go...
Media Blitz -- instead of destroying an entire base, I went around and destroyed all of the command centers. Seemed pretty effective... the mission was a joke
Final Protoss -- Walled off with DTs, and made sure to snipe any incoming overseers with air units. Slightly cheap, but quite effective
If anyone is skeptical about any of the other missions, feel free to ask and I will post the strategy I used. Will make sure to take screenshots when I finally beat it all, just for fun.
And as a side note, I'm not a spectacular player, have looked up no strategies, and did not play the beta, so it is definitely a very doable task. Wouldn't be surprised if it has been done by others.
Edit: I have gotten every main and optional objective so far, though not even close to all of the achievements.

- Outbreak (mass zombies, and I had no reapers to destroy buildings)
- Welcome to the Jungle (reasonably hard because I chose to do it with only marines/medics so Colossi and templar were a pain in the ass)
- All-in. As the last level it was reasonably hard and justifiably so.
Easiest: - Media Blitz ( Laughable level, was so easy I was wondering if by any chance I didn't choose casual by accident)
- In Utter Darkness (So easy it wasn't even funny, After killing the 2500 necessary, I gave up on playing and watched the zerg waves torn apart by my unmicro'ed army for the next 25 minutes)
- The Maw (the protoss weren't a threat whatsoever. 18 bcs 3/3/3 + 7 vessels for healing owned it hard)
- Engine of Destruction (just keep 12 scvs by him all the time, and build vikings + nuke with spectres. Did it on my 1st run, which was rare on Brutal)
- Gates of Hell (2-3 tanks + mnm raped it)
OK I have to call BS on "In Utter Darkness," considering that, after ~3k kills, they start hitting you with 10+ hybrids per wave. There is no way you "tore them apart with your unmicro'ed army for 25 minutes," sorry.

for people who have trouble with Engine of Destruction, all you have to do is pump wraiths from 2 port and keep throwing scvs to repair thor. expand and calldown some war pigs in bunkers and it should be insta win
|
Personal hardest was a Sinister turn, I kept beeing stuck in my base and losing too much. Took me a while to figure out a proper strategy for it.
Engine of destruction was relativly easy, mass viking/bashee made quick work of everything.
|
Definitely Supernova. Storms fuck FUCK my MnM and banshees and I never have the minerals to mount a second attack because the fire fucking destroys EVERYTHING T_T
In Utter Darkness is so easy if you just mass colossus and stalkers and cannons on the cliffs whenever you have the excess minerals.. 3436 kills quite easily t-t
|
I can't understand why everyone seems to think the train robbery mission is so difficult. Upon gaining Siege Breakers and Dusk Wings, that level was laughably easy, especially when I obliterate the, oh noes, "death squad" marauders within three seconds of entering my tank range.
A few missions I am struggling with however are Utter Darkness and Piercing the Shroud. The latter mission I managed to complete just barely with Raynor at 20 HP, but I always fall short of 2500 kills for Utter Darkness on brutal. It's really tough.
|
All-in for me was ridiculous because I 1) didn't take the psi disruptor 2) didn't take PF 3) didn't get faster gas
so the regular waves tore up my bunkers, so i needed banshees to tank kerrigan before she starting ripping up tanks, but also needed the banshees to kill nydus with. oddly enough, building a giant arc of bunkers worked better than trying to funnel them through a choke. mainly cause kerrigan was guaranteed to rip through a couple.
