Four years ago their yearly budget was €4.5 mill, this game is worth like.. 8? times that even if they go 0-0-6.. and it's all without any investor help, just a brilliant manager. Very reminiscent of 90s rosenborg. Qualifying to Europa League is some €4,5 mil. That's still likely a huge chunk of Bodo-Glimts annual budget. At some point I'm going to have to sit down and figure out the scale of all these financial boosters and size them against teams' budgets. There is so much going on in so different scales that it's very easy to lose the track of what actually matters and how much.
It's probably better for them long term to play against mid-tier teams in Europa League rather than being pummelled in CL.
If they can produce good form in Europa League year in year out like Sevilla, that's still a remarkable feat.
Ah, Rosenborg in the 90s were quite the giant-killer! Can't remember their stars off the top of my head though.

Btw, HJK from Helsinki is currently playing for their Europa League qualification vs Silkeborg (Denmark). Their most recent player budget for a year is roughly €2 mil, so there's some huge financial benefits if they get through.
I'm a bit spooked on how big their financial advantage is in the domestic league. So far they've been the forever favorites in the league, but still somewhat beatable on most seasons (7 out of last 10 titles for them). We'll see if that changes if they keep qualifying to the Europe more regularly with the Conference league around.

Finnish league being a summer league still affects how and when HJK is at their strongest. Having a competitive team playing competitive matches 365 days a year is a different beast than having a clear off-season in between starts. It won't be that easy to retain players that would only play the european games for the winter months, or only play finnish domestic games from April to June.

yeah most of these groups dont feel like CL groups to be honest. I know people like the idea of underdogs and all that (im having a dejavu to 2011/12 Sc2 conversations) but this is supposed to be the competition for the best clubs. CL with games from teams that have such a skill gap isn't really interesting (and it seems to be getting worse by the year with the way the path of the champions and all that crap is set up). It seems every year the group stage gets more and more irrelevant.
Does anybody remember or care that before winning CL last year RM was beaten by a club named sherif?

Although I see us as a Ro16/Ro8 team at best these days, so in a way it’s good to get some glamour ties guaranteed

Wow that group C!
I still see Bayern as favorites getting through first because of all the drama in Barca, with Barca beeing second just above Inter. Pilsen is dead in the water

Did anyone watch the first episodes of Welcome to Wrexham? I really enjoyed it. Mac and Deadpool seem like really genuine people and I hope it works out for them at Wrexham.

Imagine Barca not making it out of Group C, after they practically sold half the club for transfers. Group D looks like Liga Europa group.

Inter are a decent side that gave Liverpool a tough game last season, less flashy names perhaps but they’ve a cohesive side that’s played in a similar fashion for multiple seasons now.
I could definitely see them give Barca a run for their money, especially as Barca have half a new team and haven’t gelled it together yet.
Bayern look bloody terrifying though, don’t think either of those teams have a shot.

Oddly enough, Group D is really the Group of Death since all four teams have an equal chance of advancing.
But it'll definitely have the lowest viewership by far due to lack of any big guns. Only interesting team to watch seems to be Sporting for youth and flair (Tottenham under Conte is a bore fest). And that's not even a cool underdog to root for (Copenhagen, Vitoria. Celtic).
All in all, what a super meh group...

Be interesting to see how Shakhtar go. Will the desire to fight overcome the player drain and lack of home ground advantage?

I'm sure Southampton pulls out a 2-0 win today

how tf is that not a pen against McTominay? what is VAR for?

It feels like it should be a handball, but I can't really point the exact moment it's a definite handball either. They're all kind of weird bounces while he's somewhat tangled with the other guy. I don't know what the natural position should be there and when the bounce rules apply and so on.
I'd probably be pissed if they didn't call that for team and relieved if it didn't get called against my team.

i think a part of that decision would have been influenced by che adams literally swatting the ball away. it bounced off both players with che adams making the most 'deliberate' contact

Welp... Liverpool seems angry. And City down by a goal early again. Everyone except Arsenal seems to be a struggling a bit compared to their normal level.
