They made it clear with Messi they were willing to throw fuck you money at football. To me this just feels like the logical next step after buying a bunch of European clubs.

doesnt make it any less insane

For one billion they can buy all professional clubs in The Netherlands and they'll probably have some money to spare. If true it is indeed insane but I doubt it is true.

I saw 400 mill/year be the offer. Supposedly thats what messi was offered too.

Messi the reported salary was also mental, but at least he would have been there a few years and one can make the case that such a marquee recruit can draw eyes
What makes the Mbappe one completely mental is that it’s purportedly for a single year, and basically would let him extricate himself from PSG for a season prior to joining Real, rather than (albeit unlikely) be on the shelf on account of not signing his new deal
|
At the same time it would signal: You can play here and it wont end your career, unlike the Messi signing.
And in the end, if they ever want to reach some acceptance they have to elevate themselves above the retirement league status like the we have seen from the Chinese, Americans or at some point also the Turkish league. And well, we all know how the Saudis/Qataris try to solve every problem they face... By just throwing insane amounts of money at it.

i feel that mbappe is going to refuse it just to stick it to PSG

Makes no sense. Mbappe is neither the player nor has the "star power" and attraction that Messi and even cronaldo have still.
In case it wasn't clear, in a very hot take, my personal view is that real would make psg a very big favour by taking him away.

Haaland is more brutally consistent, and people are hyping the Haaland/Mbappe rivalry a ton, hoping for a new Messi/Ronaldo thing. Which I really pray against despite my atheism, there is not a segment of the football furniture more irritating than those die-heads
He’s still young too. He’s incredibly gifted and great to watch. Not in a football veteran ‘respect the underrated skill’ sense, but he’s running past players he’s scoring ridiculous goals etc.
Anyone who’s vaguely into football will get out of their seats for an Mbappe in full flow

The owner of the Tottenham Hotspurs....

I don't watch French league games but in CL I found watching Mbappe rather underwhelming TBH. Sure he has his highlights and he is good but I was never under the impression he can make or break a game like Messi and CR did.

Did Messi make those games instead? He was part of PSG as well... Or was it just that this pointlessly star filled squad of PSG generally really isnt really suited to let those players shine. PSG is like FIFA fanboys just selecting the players with the highest overall ratings and mixing them in a team and then crying that they still lose because there is absolutely no chemistry... While Real and Barca indeed really crafted their entire teams around CR7/Messi. There was never a doubt about who is the centre piece of those squads... While with PSG, they were/are really just getting absolutely everyone money can buy.

france vs argentina wc finals for me is a very good example of how mbappe can carry his team when his team doesnt perform. hes produced similar moments at psg a number of times too. haaland on the other hand seems to me a guy who will get you a definite win when youre already winning

Who could possibly have expected the man who moved to the Bahamas to avoid paying tax could be guilty of corruption???
Good thing the UK Government gave Spurs a 200 million pound loan at the height of the pandemic, the owners are so poor

Mbappe is definitely the current best player in the world who can decide games on his own. I doubt anyone would disagree and suggest a different single player who has better skill and aura

He has surrendered to US authorities.
NEW YORK, July 26 (Reuters) - British billionaire Joe Lewis has surrendered to U.S. authorities in Manhattan and is expected to appear in court later on Wednesday to face insider trading charges, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan said.
Federal prosecutors accused Lewis, whose family trust controls a majority of the Tottenham Hotspur soccer team, with orchestrating a "brazen" insider trading scheme by passing tips about companies in which he invested to friends, personal assistants, private pilots and romantic partners.
Two of Lewis' pilots, Patrick O'Connor and Bryan Waugh, were also charged with insider trading securities fraud. They reaped millions of dollars in illegal profit from Lewis' tips, prosecutors said.
Lewis' lawyer David Zornow said prosecutors "made an egregious error" in charging Lewis, 86, and said his client had come to the United States voluntarily to defend himself against the charges.
Lawyers for O'Connor and Waugh did not immediately respond to requests for comment. They have both also been arrested, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors said that in 2019 Lewis lent each pilot $500,000 and encouraged them to buy stock in oncology company Mirati Therapeutics before it released favorable clinical results. O'Connor texted a friend that he thought "the Boss has inside info," according to the indictment.
After Mirati announced the positive results, its share price increased 16.7% in one day, and both pilots repaid Lewis for his loans.
Separately on Wednesday, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil insider trading case against Lewis O'Connor, Waugh and Lewis' then-girlfriend Carolyn Carter.
A lawyer for Carter, who is not facing criminal charges, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
