It's visible that he lacks some confidence, but that is to be expected after that long of a pause. Funny thing is he showed more desire and was more vocal than Maguire.

hes actually better on the ball than maguire because hes played in midfield, he has pl winning experience, played under fergie and with vidic/rio, and most importantly hes usually better at defending than maguire too. jones over maguire 100 times out of 100. i watched the highlights of the game and theres this moment that really sticks out to me, where he rushes out to close i think neves? (forgot already) outside the box and gets his body in front of the shot point blank. the urgency and the desperation to block the shot was something vidic would do, and except maybe bailly i wouldnt count on a single other defender at utd to attempt the same thing.

Also Vidić/Rio combination and how would they terrorize other attackers was a joy to behold <3

He looks like the stereotypical hard man, no-nonsense British bulldog type of defender, so he’s played as one. I’m not sure he actually is that type of player, especially when it comes to organising the defence around him. Especially in the modern game you can still be a very good defender and not the vocal organiser, especially if you’re good with the ball but someone has to do it. John Stones has often looked a Rolls Royce of a player ever since Ruben Dias came into the defence, he didn’t suddenly become a better player overnight. Confidence in your partner and full backs and knowing where they are breeds confidence in your own positioning. It feels Maguire is expected to be this 80 million pound, ball-playing, defensive organiser and leader of men for a huge club that isn’t particularly functional and his inability to do all of that is crushing his confidence. I can think of very, very few centre backs in my time watching football who could do all of that at a really high level. I don’t know how you fix such an issue, but if Rudiger went from totally out in the cold to one of the most in demand (potential) free transfers, it’s certainly possible that fortunes can change when the collective context is right. I get shades of Harry Kane and the captaincy, feeling you have to do too much and if anything caring too much and having to show ‘passion’ just making him play less focused and effectively.

unfortunately hes stuck in a role too big to fill and hes succumbing to the pressure of being the captain of united and simultaneously be a solid defender. the best case scenario for him imo is for him to stick out this season and use the break to refresh and clear his mind, with or without the captains armband next season. if he fails to do so however, i think the best solution for him would be to eventually move clubs so he can start anew without the burden. its obvious right now that he has a mental block now because his and the teams performances throughout his captaincy hasnt been good enough and he will feel highly complicit. its gotten to the point where hes failing to do the complete fundamentals right. at the moment he is literally only good at making contact with the ball with his head. hes not even able to direct the ball, just make contact. hes shit at every other aspect of the game right now, in defense and in attack. he wasnt this bad last season so obviously the pressure of captaincy is getting to him, especially now when he has figures like ronaldo, varane, cavani etc who not only perform better each game but are so much more accomplished players. if he wants to make it at utd he has to be prepared to step down as captain for the benefit of the team and himself.

Bayern currently have 9 confirmed cases of Covid in the first team as well as several in their staff. It basically rests upon whether or not Alphonso Davies caught Omicron. If he did, everyone who was in team training has to enter quarantine. That'd force the match to be rescheduled because Bayern wouldn't have the required amount of players available.

Kimmich was going to get it in December but then had to isolate himself because he got Covid so I'm not sure when he's gonna get the jab. Haven't heard anything regarding Choupo-Moting on that front, just that his Covid infection was apparently quite bad. And a quick search tells me that Cuisance was also not vaccinated but that's no longer Bayern's problem.

Aston Villa have sealed a deal to sign Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona for the rest of the season with an option to buy. The Brazilian is due in Birmingham for a medical to complete a transfer under which Villa will pay about 65% of his salary. The move reunites Coutinho with Steven Gerrard, a former Liverpool teammate who is Villa’s head coach. The pair played together from 2013-15 and Gerrard’s presence at Villa has been key to the move. Gerrard had contact with Coutinho more than three times in the 48 hours leading up to the deal being agreed and on Thursday publicly described the 29-year-old as a “special footballer”. Villa’s option to purchase Coutinho will be valid until June and is understood to set the price at €40m (£33.4m). The Guardian article
