Granted, we won the World Cup with no actual left back, but yeah, that position has been one of the biggest issues for Germany in the past few years. Same with right back, but at least we had Lahm there for a long time.
I don't even know why Podolski gets nominated anymore. But generally, our midfield, offense and goalkeepers are all pretty strong.

But sometimes, Gomez is exactly the player you need. The guy who shoots twice all game and scores each time. Actually I'm pretty sure he's had games where he touched the ball like 12 times, shot once and made 2 goals.

Yeah everyone needs that kind of player.

So since the English squad once again qualified without too much trouble, does that mean they will again waste their potential and disappoint in the main tournament?

This is the year, THIS IS THE YEAR!! We are the best team form wise in Europe, best qualification in Europe, beating the bookmakers favorites France 2-0 comfortably at home, beating the Germans in their own backyard. Only ones we struggled with is vs Spain who we always struggle with, avoiding them until semi final would be nice.
But this is the year. JAMIE VARDYS HAVING A PARTY!! BRING UR VODKA AND YOUR CHARLIE!!!!!!!!! Engerland Engerrland Enggerrland :D

Wow the hype train really has left the station. I'm sceptical. We/England have a better chance than usual but I thought that about the World Cup and that didn't go to well.

I have no clue why Podolski got nominated, but w/e. Our team looks strong enough to do well, anything is possible.

Well RB/LB has always been a problem in Germany. Imo Jogi should've nominated Schmelzer, Ginter and Weiser. Those guys had a good season and imo you need real RB/LB and not 4 CBs. Probably Mustafi will play RB and Höwedes LB, like they did in the WC (Until Lahm replaced Mustafi after the Algeria game.)
I am really excited about Brandt, Kimmich, Weigl and Sane though! They are very young but incredibly talented. Especially Brandt, he played absolutely brilliant is his last season games.

Haha yeah other than the suspect back 4 and not much outside of Gomez and Muller as out and out goalscorers, the midfield is still a German midfield of power and precision!
|
Germany will still need to leave 4 of those players at home. Usually there will 1-2 injuries anyway.
About Podolski, yeah, I dont know either. But he deserves better than to be first included and then axed. I guess we have enough good midfielders so that there will always be 1-2 who just make up the numbers. Might as well take him as it seems to work quite well for the teambuilding aspect.
I'd be surprised if we win it. Yes we have some world class players, but overall the squad is not on 2014-level. With Müller, Özil, Gomez etc, we will probably get a few goalfests in groupstage/ro16, but after that, I think our defense will not be up to the challenge. Also there are too many eastern european teams around this tournament, and they tend to be our cryptonite at tournaments (also applies to italy, and maybe spain). A ro16 game vs romania/slovakia/russia with all eyes on Italy in a possible quarterfinal already might prove to be a classical trap game.
My early bets for final stages are ro8: Spain > schedule-generated-inavoidable-surprise team Portugal > England on penalties ofc Belgium/Italy > Germany France > Iceland :D
ro4: Spain > Portugal snorefest as 2012 France > Belgium/Italy
Final: France > Spain

Portugal has a lot a options for the midfield. I don't remember a time where we had so many options for that position.
João Moutinho, William Carvalho, João Mário, Adrien Silva, Renato Sanches, André Gomes, Bernardo Silva, Danilo and Rafa Silva.
I don't even know if all these players will be on the last 23.
On a side note:
I hope Sheffield Wednesday does well in the Play-off. Carlos had a dream and I hope he achieves it

I think that Germany will make it to the quarters/semi's and then underperform, losing to a good team (probably the eventual winner).
I just really hope that when we lose Löw finally goes. His selections just aren't as good as they could be (really? No Schmelzer or Ginter?) and you could make a pretty good argument that the 2014 team won the WC in spite of his management.

Gomez only scored against the lower table teams when he was in Bayern

Yeah his scoring ratio was super inflated, and honestly the amount of chances he would scrub before scoring was scandalous. A world class striker would have had twice the number of goals he did in those years.

Yeah lower table teams like Barcelona (2013), Real (2012 + a crucial penalty) or Inter (2011).
Gomez was just unlucky. His prime was right when Van Gaal and then Löw changed Bayerns / Germanys playstyle to a more ball dominating style, were the striker has more of a support role with his back to the goal. Thats just not Gomez game, he needs the ball right at his foot at full speed. In a counter attack oriented team like mou´s Inter, Athletico or this seasons Leicster he would have murder teams.
You dont score 26 Goals in 44 CL games by accident. And dont give me that "inflated by bad teams" argument, you could say that about anybody who plays for a good team.

Gomez wasn't unlucky. He was inefficient, lazy and slow...
Mandzukic and Lewa perfectly fit into Bayern...

About Gomez, I understand why he is a controversial character. Sure, he has missed many chances. But I think many people are focussing on mistakes more than they do with other players. I mean, his miss against austria is probably still the most likely thing associated with him.
His scoring rate for germany is still comparable to that of Klose. Did Klose succeed at Bayern? I dont think so. Do people feel the need to point that out every chance given? No? Then why is it repeated so often for Gomez?
On the other hand, who has ever even once brought up the fact that Lahm was directly responsible for the goals that lead to germany losing the 2008 final and in particular the 2012 semifinal? If Lahm's winning goal against turkey 2008 is shown again, will there also be a vid about him getting basically nutmegged (dont know the correct english term) seconds ago, leading up to turkey equalizing? (No disrespect to Lahm, I know he is a great player, I just used him as an example)
Another example: Cristiano is always painted to be the football equivalent of an ultimate douchebag. The fact that he reportedly trains more than anyone else is barely reported here in germany, as it wouldnt fit the picture.
Once you have acquired a certain reputation (no matter if justified or not at some point), it's hard to remove it. Even if you accept the fact that Gomez wasnt doing as good as he could at Bayern, this was now 3 years ago. I bet that 90%+ of people who claim that he STILL doesnt score enough or work hard enough, have seen like 2-3 games of him at club level at most over this period of time. Disclaimer: This includes myself.
Apologies for the spelling. I'm tired.

Meh, I really wanted to see Guardiola in the Europa League

Does England show some games on free tv? like some from FA Cup or CL games?
I have looked the viewing figures from sky england and germany. Seems super low for me. Bayern had ~0,85m viewer at pay-tv on average per bundesliga game (2nd BvB ~0,75m). In England ManU is 1st with ~1,2m viewers on pay-tv. I am talking about national viewers.
Bayern and Dortmund have always 10m-14m viewers on free tv (ARD / ZDF) when they play DFB or CL.
