Hi guys I'm basically starting to work out and I've read the SL book and parts of SS book. But I'm really interested in this guy's program too http://scoobysworkshop.com/. What do you think would be the best? Thanks all!
I realized it'll be useless to just ask without telling what my current situation is and my goal. I'm 5'11 145lbs and not strong but also not weak due to doing sports in school. I went to gym yesterday to gauge where I was at and I could do 135lb x 10 of bench press, squats, and deadlifts without too much trouble. I'm looking to get stronger and a little big bigger as my build right now is quiet lanky. Thanks all!

A huge bonus is that the cafeteria is awesome. What is your research on? I might get an article published by the end of the year, depending on how lucky I am in obtaining a sample for my work. It basicly involves mapping out the entire human metabolic pathway if I understood my mentor right and doing it such a manner that the data is easily accessible to others and on a computational form. https://notendur.hi.is/rfleming/SummerStudentProject2012MetabolicCartography.pdfThis is the project description if you are interested. It is a really ambitious project and it's going to be interesting to see how it goes. Ahh ok cool, that looks interesting. Is the research part of your degree, or just work? It's just a summer programme for me but it really helps when I do the research project next year for my BS degreen in Medicine. It's a mandatory part when you study medicine in Iceland. Viking Doctor... Imba

i get that too, took to going to bed early and just going back to sleep every time asap (read: lying there for another hour in darkness). its alright for me coz i dont do 9-5s, only mostly 2-8s which (theoretically) gives me plennnty of time to live an awesome life (*rolls eyes*)
if you're eating/drinking a lot then i think waking up is pretty inevitable (maybe you adapt to it eventually) coz you need to pee after a while. its the waking up 3-5 times in one night that really pisses with me

Starting strength or strong lifts will be considerably more effective at building strength. Also, what sport did you do at school that allows you to do a bodyweight bench press for ten reps on your first try?

It usually allows me to sleep like a log. Occasionally I get into a cycle where I go to sleep an hour later every night which ends up with me going to sleep at 7AM after a week or two. Even so, staying awake until I'm properly tired has always helped me with sleep

i used to do that but i realised that as soon as you feel tired whatsoever, that is probably when you're supposed to go to sleep immediately. so i try to notice it , and get into a habit of it. im kinda trying to think of it like i do food - after a good workout you wanna get some good food down you asap, and after a good workout you wanna get your body to sleep asap to start proper repairs.
feel constantly latent/dazed/weak, its either coz im wanking too much or coz ive been smoking, or maybe latent lifestyle/emotional dullness. got 2 cigarettes left AND NOT GONNA BUY ANYMORE AGAIN AM I GEEZ and not gonna wank for a while to see if that helps lol. and do some freakin work today to help my emotional state!
im pretty sure smoking seriously fucks with your ability to intake oxygen, my breathing during lifts has been really awful/erratic/insufficient after i quit then started a bit again - even when i can do another rep physically, i cant get the oxygen in, and give up!

I've thought they were not so good, they're good for breaking a cycle of not being able to sleep but shouldn't be used regularly. At least that's what it said on the pack. I think it was something like you become dependent on them.

There were a few very talented and skilled litfters but overall it blew me away how many were able to power snatch/clean their way to nationals and even the Olympic qualifiers (both spots went to super heavy weights that couldn't even come close to snatching their bodyweight). No wonder were so far behind the rest of the world. On the bright side got to meet dim sum who's a pretty cool dude, didn't get to catch his lifts though. Also saw some powerlifting and strongman events, pretty impressive stuff from some of the strongest men in the world. Got a month or two supply of supplements from free samples from vendor booths too You're an Ultralisk of a man, why didn't you compete?! I'm still 5-10kg away from qualifying for nationals. If the #s stay the same ill make it easy next year.

i dont think they're good, besides that doesnt teach you anything/help you solve anything . theyre not biologically sound, ie you are just dumping some random chemicals into your body and the weaker side effect is to make you drowsy...stronger side effect is nausea, delirium and heart attacks.. theyre just not natural at all
i think im not eating enough maybe, i stopped paying such close attention lately and have been having tons of veg+fish rather than rice and stopped the chocolate mostly, so i think im not getting enough of everything. i done one decent set of bench press today then my eyes already started closing/feeling heavy and the rest of the sets were total fail. (i didnt do squat today coz done it yesterday then went home coz of similar weariness suddenly setting in)
anyway it was still good coz i got people to spot me to failure anyway, and next time is 2 plate deadlift
edit: oh whoops i done an extra 5kg on deadlift today by mistake haha oh well (i went 8-5-5)

Nationals update
The arnolds was a very cool experience! I met decaf and we watched the 53kg womens class...which was disappointing without the top women competing. (All the top women are put into the olympic trials in another session.)
Thursday I flew out to Ohio and checked my weight right away. I was 63.1kg, which was a little high (I think I was eating a little too good the last week lol) I ate some celery and carrots and then alternated hot tub and pool for an hour. Afterwards I checked my weight on a teammate's scale and i was 63.7! My teammate gave me some quick tips and I headed straight to look for a sauna. The front desk directed me to a ymca 3 blocks away which I spent the next two hours losing .5kg lol.
I woke up in the morning and went to the official scale and I was 62.2. Then I was forced to put on all my sweats and sat in the sauna for another hour. The temperature of the sauna was only 140F which is probably why it took so long....
At the weigh in, I went LAST which was fucking annoying since I wanted to eat really bad.
The warm up room was very cramped( I should of taken a picture.) I felt pretty good after rehydrating and eating and warmed up fine. Another coach from my team worked with me, since my coach was busy with another lifter. He noticed I start too upright which causes me to loop the bar a little. There was no time to fix it so I just snatched normally. First attempt at 87 I smoked. The next jump to 91 I looped a tad, and the same with 92kg. My coach made good adjustments to my attempts since I'm not sure if I would of made more than 92. So I ended my snatch session with two prs (91 and 92).
Clean and jerks is when I realized how sitting in a sauna for 3 hours will affect a person haha. My warmups were getting a little sluggish once I was getting to the top weight. My first attempt(108kg) felt a lot harder, but I made it fine. Which I then told my coach and he made my next attempt only 111. The bar felt super heavy off the ground and I caught the bar a little low on my right shoulder. I readjusted for the jerk and made it cleanly. Third attempt was 113. I absolutely smoked the clean! I went to set up for the jerk and thought to power jerk it. Bad decision since when I think to power jerk, my feet get a little too wide. I felt the bar move a little forward as I got it overhead and lost it.... 2/3 attempts made with two more prs.
At the end I was a little disappointed I spent too much time cutting weight and my last missed attempt. I learned alot and will definitely do better next time.

In my experience for a complete beginner, SL > SS.
Think about it - the extra two work sets are going to help them get the neurological component of strength down that much sooner, and with proper coaching (provided by a friend or this thread or whatever) it's going to get them adapted to the proper form as well. Typically they can handle the extra two sets for a good long while, provided the nutrition is where it needs to be, and eventually the workout sets back to 3x5 anyway.
Furthermore, they're not going to start out with the back or hip flexibility, or in most cases the muscular control to properly clean. Rows are a great way to build a strong and solid back in the mean time.
SL is what I have the guys that come to the gym with me and aren't already regular lifters with solid technique start out on lately, and though we focus mainly on the squat, they're definitely making better overall progress than when I used to throw guys on SS.

It's like two hours away from me. Shoulda went, but I'm in class still anyway.

Got measured for a nutrition study I'm participating in today - since september, I've only put on 8kg, but when I was measured in september that was with creatine supplementation (carrying mad water weight) and this time was without. As well, I've only added .3 cm to my waist, but I've added almost 3 cm to my hips (squats and deadlifts for your girlfriends everybody). Blood work will probably come back looking good - and I noted on all the surveys how high my diet is in vegetables and saturated fats, but that I haven't had grains more than three times in the last six months. Way to go Paleo/TL HF, skewing health/nutrition studies m i rite?
