Could someone post/link a video where putting vikings on stop is shown to be better than hold position. I'm just not seeing it.

Daaaayyumm that's excellent. Do you know what other situations/units this comes in handy for?

What are you going to do with the stop hotkey now? It's pretty obvious you were thinking about ditching it.

We were not considering ditching it. Unit abilities need to be prioritized so that we can assign each command to the corresponding key in order of shortest to longest time to press while taking hand strain into account. Attack, Hold Position, Stop, Patrol, and up to 4 abilities need to be prioritized based on their average frequency per game and how time sensitive they are. Stop came in surprisingly high in our tests, but we are trying to figure out how much of that AFpG was due to the fact that stop is S in the standard layout while hold position is significantly further away on H.

So, what we need to figure out is, are there more instances per game where hold position is better used than stop or vis versa. This is incredibly difficult when polling people that use different hotkey groups (too many variables) however, we're attempting to get people using the darkgrid layout to submit replays for our analysis program (designed and written by Voltaire)

My guess is that Stop should be used more frequently due to stutter stepping. You should probably only ever use "Hold" when you specifically want your units to hold (ie, there are seiged tanks nearby). The rest of the time, you want your units to aggro normally. In those situations, the difference between the two seems small, but can be enough to change the result of a battle.

You both bring up great points. Just got a load of new tournament data, currently aggregating from 2129 games (wish we could get a hold of GSL replays). Hold position is on the top of stop by 2.6 average times per game in Protoss, 1.8 average times per game in Zerg, and 1.4 average times per game in Terran. Due to the fact that stop is a much more convenient key to press, I'm going to say that the Pros must have damn good reasons for reaching over to hold position.

Most players who have played a while (especially pros) have switched the hold position button to a more comfortable one. I use W. There's no reason to keep it at H.

Good point, but I wonder how many of the pro players are so set in their standard ways that they don't change their keys at all.

Me2 but i have to put the thumb on ctrl in order to do it, thats not efficient^^

Im curious if i will want to play with thumb on shift, could u post the keys that u will use (not their usage) so i can decide if i start practising or wait for the new concept please?

I don't place my hands in the normal position so I just do this. (I play Zerg) and everything is mashed to the left

Standard Template
Backspace[Base Jump] - Space
Burrow - R
Mutas - Q
Hydras - E
Ultras - A

Then all Zerg Upgrades correspond to the Keyboard ( for the 5x3 Box )

Ex) Evolution Chamber

Melee - Q Range - W Carpace - E

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My hotkeys normally are

1 - Hatches
2 - Queens (Debating moving to mouse key, and just using Space to swap between)
3-8 - Units

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whether or not each key combination may be individually faster however it is entirely user preference and depends on natural/learned hand placement on top of variability in each persons hand.
Play to learn, not to win.

For the GSL data, maybe you could ask Artosis about the Stop vs Hold command, since he is behind the scenes, he may know the standards for the Code A/S players.

I'm eagerly awaiting for the final layout.
Thanks for your hard work!

That's a good idea. I'm sure Artosis has a lot of other things to do, but who knows, maybe he'll respond...

Episode 1 had to get deleted But it was a train-wreck-and-a-half. I accidentally revealed some personal information Maybe I'll release it later just for laughs once i can edit the video. Help yourself to the rest of it in the mean time :D

Also, long term with the new layout there will be multiple versions for people with varying hand sizes, for all of you long fingered individuals out there :D

Thanks for all your hard work. I've been meaning to learn a new setup for awhile and this could be the encouragement I need

I was wondering if you had put much thought into the inject method? My experience using the Base Camera method is that it is sub-optimal with more than 3 bases (or as soon as you add a macro hatch). If I wanted to assign 3 control groups to queens do you have any advice which keys I should use. By using that method I might be able to reassign Capslock also.

One other thing - should I be using Centre on Current Selection? I'm trying to think of when I would have something selected that's not already grouped and coming up blank.

This sounds interesting, although to be honest i am pretty happy with my hotkey set up, which is a slight modification of the Cartesian Hotkey Setup that Shurafa posted around this time last year, and i have been doing that ever since. I don't think i would ever spend enough time switching again, as i am now used to this one, and it does the same job as your really, although admittedly not as efficiently.
The world is ending what should we do about it?

Playing with it for over a week now. For the terran hotkeys I suggest changing either "Y" for Halt, or Y for lift/land. When your building is finishing and you want it to lift instantly, if both are on the same hotkey you can't spam lift while it's still building. I'm also using ` as a screen hotkey (not using "Center on current selection"). I use ERTGB (in that priority order) for units, DF for cc/production, 3 for an scv that has to build something (3 -> V/C is the easiest compared to the other control groups), 4 for upgrades (ebays/tech lab), 5 for depots (to lift/lower quickly, although i haven't used that for real yet). Also not sure why salvage bunker was so far away (N), I changed it to Q. I'm pretty used to it right now, I'm winning again in the GM league. Still not 100% used to it, noticeable in panic situations where pulling scvs and repairing and stuff is required. I'm glad I switched though.
