Unit abilities need to be prioritized so that we can assign each command to the corresponding key in order of shortest to longest time to press while taking hand strain into account. Attack, Hold Position, Stop, Patrol, and up to 4 abilities need to be prioritized based on their average frequency per game and how time sensitive they are. Stop came in surprisingly high in our tests, but we are trying to figure out how much of that AFpG was due to the fact that stop is S in the standard layout while hold position is significantly further away on H. So, what we need to figure out is, are there more instances per game where hold position is better used than stop or vis versa. This is incredibly difficult when polling people that use different hotkey groups (too many variables) however, we're attempting to get people using the darkgrid layout to submit replays for our analysis program (designed and written by Voltaire)

My guess is that Stop should be used more frequently due to stutter stepping. You should probably only ever use "Hold" when you specifically want your units to hold (ie, there are seiged tanks nearby). The rest of the time, you want your units to aggro normally. In those situations, the difference between the two seems small, but can be enough to change the result of a battle.

There's no reason to keep it at H. Good point, but I wonder how many of the pro players are so set in their standard ways that they don't change their keys at all.

Standard Template Backspace[Base Jump] - Space Burrow - R Mutas - Q Hydras - E Ultras - A Then all Zerg Upgrades correspond to the Keyboard ( for the 5x3 Box ) Ex) Evolution Chamber Melee - Q Range - W Carpace - E ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My hotkeys normally are 1 - Hatches 2 - Queens (Debating moving to mouse key, and just using Space to swap between) 3-8 - Units ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Whether or not each key combination may be individually faster however it is entirely user preference and depends on natural/learned hand placement on top of variability in each persons hand.

Hold position is on the top of stop by 2.6 average times per game in Protoss, 1.8 average times per game in Zerg, and 1.4 average times per game in Terran. Due to the fact that stop is a much more convenient key to press, I'm going to say that the Pros must have damn good reasons for reaching over to hold position. For the GSL data, maybe you could ask Artosis about the Stop vs Hold command, since he is behind the scenes, he may know the standards for the Code A/S players. I'm eagerly awaiting for the final layout. Thanks for your hard work!

Episode 1 had to get deleted ![]() ![]() Also, long term with the new layout there will be multiple versions for people with varying hand sizes, for all of you long fingered individuals out there :D

![]() I was wondering if you had put much thought into the inject method? My experience using the Base Camera method is that it is sub-optimal with more than 3 bases (or as soon as you add a macro hatch). If I wanted to assign 3 control groups to queens do you have any advice which keys I should use. By using that method I might be able to reassign Capslock also. One other thing - should I be using Centre on Current Selection? I'm trying to think of when I would have something selected that's not already grouped and coming up blank.
