I wanted a more proactive support character that I could carry with in emergency situations, plus firin' your lazor never gets old. If you need a support that could turn into a carry, I'd actually shy away from Lux. She needs a lot of farm and kills to be relevant lategame, and with a supporty laning phase, she'll never carry hard enough. Blitz is more likely what you're looking for, although I understand the playstyle is extremely different. If you absolutely have to build support Lux with possible carrying in mind, I'd go something like Philo, Kage, Boots -> CDR boots -> Cap -> DFG and/or Void Staff. Something like that. Maybe with a Doran's Ring or two in there.

I play support on my team, and although we win bot most the time, I feel I can do better if I know how to pick the ideal support to complement the carry and counter the enemy duo as well. So how do you pick which support is the best to take? What compliments your AD carry, and what is effective against their combination. Sometimes picking a certain support to deny a strong combination is also smart. For example, against something like Taric + Graves, if you already have Vayne, you are going to want someone like Soraka to counter all of their burst. When your AD carry has a weaker laning phase, you are probably going to want a support with good sustain. If you have an aggressive AD, like Ez, you can run a really aggressive support like Alistar or Leona. I'm a very mediocre support player however, so take what I say with a grain of salt, hope I helped.

So how do you pick which support is the best to take? The following is mostly my opinion. Know your AD. In order from aggressive to farmy, the most common ADs: Tristana (strong lv 1,2,3, very strong late, weak level 3~9 or so. Alistar, Sona are good with her) Vayne (the AD with the most reliable CC. Extremely good combo with Alistar; also good with Blitz and Janna.) Graves (relatively bursty AD, low range. Alistar, Sona, Janna.) Ezreal (uses more mana than other ADs, and very strong early harass. Sona, Soraka, Janna.) Kog'Maw (very squishy, but large range and high damage. Janna, Sona, Soraka) Caitlyn (extremely long range and good at trading damage by herself. Sona, Janna, Taric). Know both your and the opponent's teams. Opponent has fiddle and leona? Janna should be a strong consideration, as her ult is one of the strongest peels in the game. You're up against a Vayne/Alistar lane (CC chain), and your AD is Graves? Consider Soraka to keep Graves safe. Team needs a hard initiation? Alistar has one of the hardest of any support; Blitz, Sona, and Leona aren't bad either. EDIT: oh yeah none of these are hard rules btw, there are a lot of nuances to support

I play support on my team, and although we win bot most the time, I feel I can do better if I know how to pick the ideal support to complement the carry and counter the enemy duo as well. So how do you pick which support is the best to take? It depends on a lot of things, you want to have an idea of what you're going to do before hand. If you want to run an aggresive bot lane, then you are going to want supports like Alistar, Taric, Leona, even Blitzcrank. Most AD carries can successfully play an aggressive bottom the best being probably Tristana, Vayne, Ezreal and Corki, the poorest being Ashe most likely. Caitlyn is a very aggressive laner but can lack killing power, making Alistar/Cait lanes susceptible to high sustain supports like Soraka and Sona. Ultimately you have to be aware of how you are going to want to play a lane, that oftentimes means having an idea of what your opponents are going to pick, since this is not always the case that you know this beforehand, you have to plan for every eventuality. This uncertainty, combined with the power of high sustain supports to neutralize aggression, makes Soraka and Sona the most popular picks. Going up against a super sustain lane is tricky because you either have to burst really well and have good communication, or else you have to be confident that you can outfarm your opponents, knowing that you are likely to lose the harass battle and could become zoned. The other thing to keep in mind is that you are not just picking your support based on your AD carry, and the opponents AD/Support bottom, you are picking a support to pick the best support possible for your whole team. This is why you will often counter pick certain team comps with your support. Janna is extremely good at disrupting AoE team compositions. Sustain supports can help against Poke team comps, and you can counter pick a team with alot of gap closers by taking Alistar for his ability to peel for your carries, or you can counterpick karthus with soraka and use wish to lessen the effectiveness of his ultimate.
