this is pretty lol

are you aware that america/canada are the absolute nicest countries in the world for immigrants? if you are white and living in an asian country the racism is absolutely overwhelming, you can not expect in any way to live any kind of normal life, and everything is your fault
i can't believe someone like susie who has lived in korea and america can come here and spout nonsense about america being in any way a worse place for minorities to live in than korea

just random shit i have seen in korea:
i was coming back to korea and at the airport they had about ~70 vietnamese people that were obviously being imported as slave labor to work in the factories up north near the dmz... the viets were being screamed at and hit by customs agents

koreans backed by the police import south east asian girls on the premise of being dancers to work in brothels for sleezy salaryman

sometimes i'll try to go to some places and they'll tell me "korean only", so ill be like what why, and they'll say oh one time a white guy came here and had a fight or something retarded

lol

if american businesses did that, they'd get sued
if america started importing slave labor, the world would go fucking nuts
even half koreans trying to go to school in korea end up committing suicide for all the abuse they get from insanely racist LITTLE KIDS taught by their parents to hate everything not korean

god i could go on but its pointless if you have lived this long and not realized such a simple truth. we have a black president ffs, i've never seen so many stupid posts in such a short amount of time

You think ALL of America is "accepting" as you put it? Maybe the bigger cities, maybe the metropolitan areas. You go out west more, south more and you really think that racism doesn't exist there? As a fuckin' grad student in Indiana I got told several times "Oh, you speak good English!" (to which I reply, No, I speak English WELL), or have people say things like "oh but your people blah blah blah".

We have a black president after HOW many years of black citizens fighting for their freedom?

At the same time, do you feel that teh white people in Korea represent all white people? The ones here are GIs who like to pick fights and English teachers who think that they are the shit. Arrogant and cocky and degrading, as if they are gracing us with their presence.

No matter which country I go to, it's pretty apparent that there is a level of racism. The looks I get for walking around with my white boyfriend range from disgust to jealousy - all depending on the individual who is looking. So don't give me the whole "America is so wonderful" because although it might be nice for immigrants on a legal level, there's a reason why most asians stick with their own (Chinatowns, Korea towns) - and it's not mainly because of the language.

Metropolitan areas are not any less racist; the people there just tend to know better how to keep it to themselves.

And it's definitely not like white people are the only or "the most" racist people either (as I've picked up heavy undertones of in this thread). I am not saying that white people are less racist, but that racism is an individual choice rather than an ethnic one. I am a white person and I've been on the receiving end of racism many times. My brother was once on the receiving end of a racial hate crime from a black person and very narrowly escaped getting beaten brutally when a teacher arrived on the scene. Asian people aren't exactly immune to being racist either. The biggest difference is the ways in which different peoples discriminate. Blacks and whites are more likely to be confrontational; asians tend to get socially exclusive. I'm generalizing of course, but that seems to be the way things go.

Part of the problem, I think, is that as a society we are hung up on race to begin with. Even the same people who claim to be racially friendly go out of there way to be politically correct rather than treating people how they deserve to be treated as individuals. Take for the incident with the Duke lacrosse team. Currently they are suing the school because the school administrators went out of their way to sabotage the case the students had even though it turned out the students were innocent ("[The Dean of Students abused her position] by advising the plaintiff lacrosse players not to tell their parents of the rape allegations made against them and of the legal jeopardy facing them, and advising them not to seek and obtain legal representation."). Why did the administration betray the students? Because they wanted to be perceived as racially friendly.

For the record, Obama might not be the best example to bring up in this thread either. Exit polls indicated that race helped him more than it hurt him and that age hurt McCain. Should we be talking about discrimination by age instead? Or if we want to keep things racial, why are there so few asian and hispanic political leaders in this country?

But then again, as I was trying to point out earlier, thinking like that is also dangerous -- the individual running for office is all that should be considered, and factors such as age, race, physical appearance, etc, should be discarded. If we wanted to be truly fair, we probably shouldn't even allow anyone to see who they are voting for. But Americans would probably be unhappy if they elected a 400 pound fat guy with greasy hair and a pock-marked face.

Mortality you got a good point, the reason whites and blacks are more confrontational is because different culture values compared to asians. This is just how most asians are shy and less social compared to others. In asian culture, it emphasizes obedience, respect, rely on parents, not get in trouble. In western society, it is more independence, outgoing, freedom of speech.

Pfft, racism is everywhere. Even in Singapore, except we have cyborgs watching our every move so that we won't run amok and start swearing at every differently-colored-skin people or people with funny accent.

And susie's post was just sad.

America was built on immigration. There isn't a single person living in America that hasn't come from somewhere else within the last 400 or so years, besides the Native Americans. American growth is fueled mostly by immigration. If you go to a country where the population is virtually homogeneous, you are pretty much asking to be discriminated against.

The OP's article missed a few facts. The town in question is a place called Keswick, small farming, blue collar community. Apparently the town is mostly white but there's a small community of Koreans in the area. There's already been previous acts of racism in the area, mostly something called "nipper tipping", where local kids go around the docks and push Korean people in the water while they're fishing. Awhile ago some kids pushed a few fishermen in the water and then got their asses kicked. While the Koreans were on their way home the bloodied racists chased them down in their car and knocked em off the road, killing one and paralyzing two of them. The driver is about a month away from going to prison 5 years.

If anyone looks up the "model minority" motif and ethnic antagonism, they'd realize citing Obama as a sign of civil rights progress is one of the biggest fallacies they can make. Also catbert, for someone claiming the equality of American culture, you have a rather condescending tone towards Koreans.

i dont know many black politicians worthy of becoming a president, it has nothing to do with them fighting for their freedom. If anything, the fact that this country got a black president should speak in the favor of the guy you arguing with, but you trying to flip it over before someone uses it in the argument.
racism is absolutely common, nothing new here. In US it probably generates worse scenarios overall, but imo in asian countries people are less accepting and more traditional in general
also funny quote about your white boyfriend, im sure u get WAY more "looks" in korea then the hateful US

my point is that both countries have their flaws in being racist.
as for the black politician statement, it was to show that it's just NOW something people accept. he's a smart cookie, and thus why people voted him into office unlike the white president before him who wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

my retaliation was to the kid who was telling me that the US was the nicest place for immigrants; stating "i can't believe someone like susie who has lived in korea and america can come here and spout nonsense about america being in any way a worse place for minorities to live in than korea"

bottom line. both countries have their racist/prejudice/double standardness.

i cannot even fathom being a racist, let alone punching someone in the face because i dont like their race.

no seriously though, you really have to hate asian people to just walk up to them and punch em in the mouth.

racism should be identified as a disorder.

lol funny how the white kid cousin said next day to the korean guy "you f#%^ing chinese, that's my cousin you punched." He is smart enough to not to punch the korean guy knowing he will just end up like his cousin, but a teacher overheard this racist comment and suspended him.

hate to break it to you but people don't elect presidents, so people voting for him is a dead argument. maybe the correct question is how many people voted for him because hes a democrat? how many people voted for him just because hes black? i dont have any faith in the majority of people's ability to choose a correct politician.

this particular one has alienated a group of americans, reversed the majority of bushie boy's policies which is whats expected of democrats regardless whether or not its correct. thats my point, thats my problem with obama so far, i only put faith in his ability to smooth diplomatic relations

im an independent party member (e) meaning i stick to the middle gray area and decide which guy sucks less in a demo v repub vote-off, because as i was signing up to vote i think i had to choose a party affliation, that was a long time ago for me

as for the black politician statement, it was to show that it's just NOW something people accept. he's a smart cookie, and thus why people voted him into office unlike the white president before him who wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

my retaliation was to the kid who was telling me that the US was the nicest place for immigrants; stating "i can't believe someone like susie who has lived in korea and america can come here and spout nonsense about america being in any way a worse place for minorities to live in than korea"

bottom line. both countries have their racist/prejudice/double standardness.

obama mirrors bush so far in his actions chief. nice fail liberal bias

you're gonna tell me that people voted for him because he's just like bush? ps. i didnt vote.

hate to break it to you but people don't elect presidents, so people voting for him is a dead argument. maybe the correct question is how many people voted for him because hes a democrat? how many people voted for him just because hes black? i dont have any faith in the majority of people's ability to choose a correct politician.

this particular one has alienated a group of americans, reversed the majority of bushie boy's policies which is whats expected of democrats regardless whether or not its correct. thats my point, thats my problem with obama so far, i only put faith in his ability to smooth diplomatic relations

im an independent party member

what do you mean "people don't elect presidents"? I always thought they did lol. Unless your talking about the electoral college, but then thats just geting technical about the whole thing.

He says "people don't elect presidents" meaning a large amount of people that votes don't vote for the correct reasons. They don't follow politics often and do not know the issues.
