A long time ago I made this thread to share my lil confrontation with some dude who I was friendly with (or so I thought). It was my first in-my-face physical encounter with racism. Being the proud boxer I wanted to knock 'em out. Nevertheless I went through the company and learned that he twisted things around and said that I called him a "cracka" first (please, I'd never used that weakass word). Anyway, I went to a mutual friend on the job and learned a bit more. Turns out he was beaten up quite a bit in school coming up, until his police officer father put his foot down and said enough is enough. They bulked him up and supposedly he fought the bullies off. He's carried the complex with him since, which explains why his fight-never-flight instincts are so active. They really did a number on him that he's gonna be carrying for the rest of his life. In an odd way I identified with that. He apologized later and the whole thing just kinda went away. But as I got to see more of him on the job, his antics became crazier and crazier. His laughs were maniacal, he'd take huge chances unnecessarily, as if he wanted to die. I didn't have to do shit, that stuff's gonna catch up with him sooner or later. Anyway I just wanna say that racism is one form of bigotry, what makes it racism is simply the motivation behind it. Its intensely personal, which can really blind and damage a person. It stops a lot of people from thinking. There's always other ways to settle a score, even physically, but it takes thinking and planning. If I had gone through with the "carve a fear into him" option I'd be satisfied for a week...and arrested most likely. It's not worth it. You wanna plan your entry AND your exit. Either say fuck it and be unbreakable (and confident in the fact that plenty of good people exist) or stealth-fuck the person (physical or otherwise) and be gone when he comes to. It's like SC, different race plays different. It's not always fair but playing smart wins, period. In any tricky situation (doesn't have to be racism, could be about anything that blows outta proportions), ask yourself how much it's really worth to you, and do the proper thing.

If anything, the fact that this country got a black president should speak in the favor of the guy you arguing with, but you trying to flip it over before someone uses it in the argument. racism is absolutely common, nothing new here. In US it probably generates worse scenarios overall, but imo in asian countries people are less accepting and more traditional in general also funny quote about your white boyfriend, im sure u get WAY more "looks" in korea then the hateful US my point is that both countries have their flaws in being racist. as for the black politician statement, it was to show that it's just NOW something people accept. he's a smart cookie, and thus why people voted him into office unlike the white president before him who wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. my retaliation was to the kid who was telling me that the US was the nicest place for immigrants; stating "i can't believe someone like susie who has lived in korea and america can come here and spout nonsense about america being in any way a worse place for minorities to live in than korea" bottom line. both countries have their racist/prejudice/double standardness.

I said maybe because I honestly don't know that much about Canada. They might be as terrible as Europe when it comes to these issues for all that I know.

You go out west more, south more and you really think that racism doesn't exist there? As a fuckin' grad student in Indiana I got told several times "Oh, you speak good English!" (to which I reply, No, I speak English WELL), or have people say things like "oh but your people blah blah blah". We have a black president after HOW many years of black citizens fighting for their freedom? At the same time, do you feel that teh white people in Korea represent all white people? The ones here are GIs who like to pick fights and English teachers who think that they are the shit. Arrogant and cocky and degrading, as if they are gracing us with their presence. No matter which country I go to, it's pretty apparent that there is a level of racism. The looks I get for walking around with my white boyfriend range from disgust to jealousy - all depending on the individual who is looking. So don't give me the whole "America is so wonderful" because although it might be nice for immigrants on a legal level, there's a reason why most asians stick with their own (Chinatowns, Korea towns) - and it's not mainly because of the language. If that's the most racism you've experienced in america you are pretty lucky. I've had situations where i'm with a korean chick and guys will straight up come up to her and ask her why she isn't dating one of her kind, and I'm totally fluent in Korean and respond 'shut the fuck up' and everyone thinks i did something wrong...lol I'm not sure what your point is about how long it took to get a black president. We have one, that's the point. North Korea has a nuclear weapon, would you say, YEAH SURE BUT LOOK HOW LONG IT TOOK FOR THEM TO GET IT THERES NO DANGER!!!1 DUHHHH!! No. It makes no sense, I have no idea what kind of argument you are trying to make. I'm not a GI or english teacher and will not speak for them. Some Asian ethnic groups in america stick together because of their crazy nationalism and xenophobia. Never in my life have I been told that I shouldn't date a certain group of people. I know guys whose girls would never tell their parents they are dating a non-korean because they would literally disown them and kick them out the house. Asian culture is oppressively suffocating and you have no room to be an independent thinker. Don't blame racism. Every china/korea town is in a big city and large cities are the most tolerant places on the planet.

No I think we're pretty good - I mean, of course racist people exist here but in my opinion we have always been good at accepting immigrants into our country. I think the real racial tension here is between natives and white people :\ But even that has pretty much settled down. I am proud of my country in regards to how we accept other cultures/embrace them. The original article is really an isolated event... Yea it's "retarded" but I honestly don't think it's that newsworthy. It'll get settled probably rightly in court.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but you seem to be intentionally (or unintentionally) twisting some things around here. Just because he claimed that the US is one of the "nicest" places for immigrants doesn't mean that he was claiming that there aren't still many cases of racism in the United States (in fact no one in this thread is arguing that, quite the opposite actually). I don't think that what he said was out of line at all, nor do I think that your last line in the quote above really addresses what he said. Just what I think, though. I also found this quote from you particularly interesting: On May 03 2009 15:18 lilsusie wrote: You think ALL of America is "accepting" as you put it? Maybe the bigger cities, maybe the metropolitan areas. You go out west more, south more and you really think that racism doesn't exist there? As a fuckin' grad student in Indiana I got told several times "Oh, you speak good English!" (to which I reply, No, I speak English WELL), or have people say things like "oh but your people blah blah blah". First off, I fail to see how a compliment of all things is a good example of America not being accepting. If anything, that's a good example to COUNTER the point that you were trying to make. Compared to what Rekrul wrote in regards to some Korean places not allowing foreigners in and how that, while racist, is perfectly acceptable (and honestly I would probably agree with him, without knowing any more information on the matter), your comments here are particularly intriguing, and it's interesting to see how opinions differ on the notion of acting a certain way based upon one's past experiences when the country and races change. To elaborate on that last point a bit, I know that the school that you're referring to is Purdue (I have a good memory ![]() Although, when you said "or have people say things like "oh but your people blah blah blah"", that's a different story and my comments don't really apply to that ![]() Anyway, not that I'm trying to start an argument or that I disagree with your bottom line at all (nor am I trying to pick on you by any means), but I did find some of these things particularly interesting and worth commenting on. I agree that there's racism in all countries, but I also think that many people tend to attach more significance to things (such as race) than they should. I also agree that the article in the original post is a sad story, and that the punishments should be better balanced, but I've seen far more racism in this thread than I can see in the article =[ I really think that it was a mistake to make a thread here about this article, it's almost certain to get ugly (and I guess it's not exactly pleasant now either).
