My pick would be world of warcraft, as it is probably the most played game,Even though i dont play it myself. Guitar hero also is a revolutionary and verry popular game. Feels a bit unfair to compare recent games with games from the 70,s and 80,s. Off course recent games are way and way better in every aspect. @below: How is it wrong? you cant compare something like space invaders with halo? Or wulfenstein 3d with doom (not even mentioned in the list i think) There is a reason the old games are not played annymore, most people like new games alot more. Everything is better, the graphics, the smoothness of the gameplay, the seize of the game. I love old stuff (my first computer game was a version of pong and i loved it, but when doom came i loved that even more) but have to be realistic.

The gameplay is way simpler, the graphics are worse, you couldnt play online with others (wich makes games a lot more fun) They realy are worse then contemporary games in every aspect. Lets be honest here, who of you still play games now and then from the 70,s and 80,s or even 90,s? My favorit game is not mentioned btw, maybe because it was freeware. Return to castle wolfenstein/enemy territory (based on quake engine), wich i still find the best fps even today.

I think reds the best. Anyone that thinks blue is the best is wrong.

like battlefield bad company for the frostbite engine.. its so much fun to start the maps with a lot of buildings to hide in and in the end everything is destroyed. otherwise i would consider gta 2 or gta san andrews, half-life 2, dawn of discovery, the first call of duty, diablo 2, pokemon yellow was awesome too back in the day... but in the end... im voting for super mario!

Newer games should, generally, be higher in quality, because designers of new games can take into account the successes and failures of various older games. There's a greater space of knowledge and experience to tap now than before, as well as superior computing resources to support your design. Those advantages are often pissed away by crap designers, or snatched away by jackass higher-ups. But they certainly exist.

But not necessarily in gameplay - that's why there are classics that can be pretty old. For example, I do still play Master of Orion 2 every once in a while, there just hasn't been a worthy successor yet. Of course, this is all a matter of taste and also age. If you didn't experience it back when it was new and shiny, chances are that you'll see only the dated graphics and can't be bothered to give it a try.

Lets be honest here, who of you still play games now and then from the 70,s and 80,s? So daft. 1) By the standards of the day the graphics were awesome. 2a) There is beauty in simplicity: even games like Asteroids, Joust, Combat!, Pac-Man, would provide countless hours of play time - moreso than many games today 2b) In the mid-late 80s games became more complex. Games like Star Tropics, Wonderboy, Golden Axe, TMNT Arcade, Zelda, Super Mario 3. Ultima IV takes on average 100 hours to finish. 3) Really? Online play is your argument? go outside In the 80s and even sooooooo far back as the 90s people did this cool thing where they would get together and play games...in person! It's a novel concept for sure. In all seriousness, you should've seen how packed arcades were and how competitive people were over Galaga or Ms. Pac-Man. NES created a 4-controller adapter for 4 player games like Gauntlet...holy crap, how is Gauntlet not on this list. I could go on and on but seriously, video games were a family activity in households lucky enough to have an Atari or NES. I played games with my parents, grandparents, uncles...etc. Games brought people together -- which I could argue they do the opposite now. 4) My wife and I (32 years old) have a retro video game night once a month and host about 10-15 people who come over to play games like Sonic, Toe Jam & Earl, Zombies Ate my Neighbors!, and Super Mario Bros 2.
