Buffalo Trace is always my suggestion for an easy to get into bourbon

A little late but I second that as well buffalo trace is very high quality stuff.
I just picked up evan williams single barrel 2003 and it is quite good but I think I'd rather have buffalo trace.
Also picked up highland park 12 y.o. as my first scotch and I am enjoying it.

I like Buchanan's leathery taste. It makes me want to smoke a cigar and read an Ernest Hemingway book all whilst wearing a fake mustache. Don't ask why. I'm a girl with father issues, I guess. I drank half of my ex roomates boyfriends 12 year Glenlivet. That stuff was too strong, but I was desperate and didn't feel like driving anywhere. I tasted The Aberlour a'bunadh 12 yr at a cigar shop in Houston, maybe my tastebuds were off but I tasted a little bit of mint flavor . The jerk at the cigar shop paired my tasting with a honduran cigar (don't remember the name) but it was quite sweet and a little "nutty".
Of course when I am on a budget, I opt for the plastic container type of whisky.
Buchanan's ramains my favorite (only tried the 12 and 18 year).

I've been having the Balvenenie Doublewood 12 I got from my fiance as a birthday present. I really enjoy it, I'm by no means a scotch expert though. It's fairly strong from start to finish, I know some who prefer it straight but I always add a single piece of ice just to take a tiny bit of the edge off. After finishing my long paper for school last night, I had a bit to reward myself and it was quite nice.

I'm a little bit surprised. The Standard 12y Glenfiddich is a quite "soft" whiskey... Anyway, we had a Whiskey Festival a few days back and damn my purse, I bought three new bottles!
An Irish Writer's Tears (Pot Still) (exactly this version with the two glasses! )
An Auchentoshan "Tarte Au Citron" (The woman from Wemyss was really nice!)
And a special bottling of my local Whiskey bar. It's really great 15y old Deanston! Seems that is selling like hot cakes; I got the last bottle in their shop (they still have a few bottles in their bar).

I love ryes and I'm all about the Whistle Pig

It's my birthday tomorrow and I'm looking to treat myself to so etching nice in the not too expensive range. Say under 100 CAD. What does TL suggest? Bonus points if you know it is available in the state run liquor gulags.

Bonus points if you know it is available in the state run liquor gulags. Over here, that amount buys you nearly any bottle you want under 16 years (unless it's rare, special edition or overmarketed). So unless you only like Macallan 18 or Ardbeg Gallileo, plenty of choice. I recently picked up a bottle of Springbank 15, I must say I'm really pleased with it. I usually drink a lot of peat, this one is unpeated, but very nice.

As said above, it would help to know what you are looking for.
Happy birthday.

My day to day go to is usually Jamison or similar Irish whiskey. I grew up on crown royal, jack and makers mark. Looking to broaden my horizons.
Sadly in Canada, even more so Nova Scotia, 100 dollars a bottle gets you to the high end of the middle shelf and not much over.

Anyone who has experience with Tobermory 10? Its not cheap imo (about 60 dollars) and thats even with a discount. I want to broaden my Isle-collection though, and this one isn't usually available in Denmark. Opinions?
Btw so happy to see this thread bumped once in a while.

We enjoyed it a lot along with the whole city while visiting Shwarzwald this summer :-) This and a remote restaurant called Cafe Faller, in the mountains :-) About the bar, the skeleton with sunshades and a beer keg under his arm deep down the well in the toilets was so fucking unexpected. (yeah, you read correctly)

And seem to be decently priced as well. I wish it was the same in Finland..

^awesome to have such a wide variety of things you can sample (makes deciding on what to buy a lot easier)

Agree about the prices. We even found a 5L beer keg for the enormous amount of 5.5euros !!! And it was not even awful ! Made for a nice evening in the camping ^^ Off-topic though, since it was not whiskey :-p
