I Always found it to be a fresh Highland whisky, with a bit more salt and smoke compared to many others in the same price range. I know it's not a great whisky, but for its price tag, I enjoy it. I didn't dislike it but felt that it wasn't worth the price. How much does it cost in Sweden? In Canada, a bottle of Oban 14 will cost $110 compared to say $90 for Dalwhinnie 15 (which I like). But then again, a bottle of Highland Park 18 would go for $150 so I doubt I'd be getting one of those any time soon either. edit: Prices are for Ontario, Canada. Other provinces will differ slightly iirc.

With that said, Sweden does have high taxes on alchol.

Now, however, I've begun my whisky journey. So far (Not in order of greatness): Laphroaig Triple Wood: Fantastic; I love peat. Smoke, burning furniture (antique furniture), very little salt. Slightly twiggy fireplace. Brilliant from nose to finish. Be wary: your palate will be smokey for some time after a dram of this. Lagavulin 16: Amazing. My second favourite. Winter warmer; I get antiseptic cream, sea spray, seaweed, dried fruits and lots and lots of burning furniture. (since writing this originally, I've had some more lagavulin; it's still amazing more fruits now than smokiness, however) Highland Park 12: A disappointment. High quality, well crafted but I don't like the pungent presentation of sweet flavours. I get brownies, some fruit and lots of vanilla.. Dry finish is really nice tho. Johnny Black: Not much to say, not very interesting, can't recommend it. Buffalo Trace: A bourbon, AMAZING! I love the flavour of this. I smell more time nosing it than drinking. I get big vanilla, hints of oak and wood sap on the nose. Palate is bold, full, rich; more vanilla (which I love) and oak; very smooth. Finish has hints of licorice, some candied popcorn maybe and yes, more vanilla. I will certainly be buying more of this. Maker's Mark: A real disappointment. It was touted to be a great introductory bourbon but I found it to be too weak and indistinct. Really needs a 46% or higher bottling to bring out some flavour. 40% just isn't enough. Nose was candied fruits with a hint of vanilla and pickle. Palate was much the same but tasted watery. Finish was totally unremarkable except for some oak notes. It's like buffalo trace but half as good. Glen Moray 10 or 12: Boring. Similar to highland park but with the addition of some citrus notes. Very indistinct and again it's bottled at too little ABV. Possibly sherry-finished which I don't like. Can anyone offer some insight to bourbons similar to Buffalo Trace? I've sinced tried a sip of Elmer T Lee, which I will be buying shortly and Woodford Park Maple Finish - really amazing but a bit too sweet to buy a whole bottle.

You should be able to get some Lagavulin 16 for about that price if you shop around. If is a great peaty whisky and a bit less harsh than the Laphroaig. Both of those are my favorites at the moment. Enjoy!

What do you reckon is a good starter, that won't burn too large a whole in my wallet? glennfiddich 12 ~24€ laphroaig 10 ~ 30€ dalwhinnie 15 / laphroaig quarter cask /glennfiddich 15 ~35€ ardbeg 10 ~40€ lagavulin 16 ~45€ makers mark ~25€ & wild turkey rare breed ~30€ are decent bourbons to checkout all below 50€ good to top quality and should be quite easy to get evrywhere. Yeah, Canada has some crazy taxes on alcohol. Things are about half price just south of the border in the US which is probably more in line with prices in Germany
