Little bit of background, I am a teacher in a university still in the early years of my life. Every year as you may know new students come and begin their studies. I teach on a predominately male course (Comp Sci) so women are few and far between where I work. Needless to say I have been doing this job for 4+ years now and I am really enjoying it.
Anyway September 2013 saw the arrival of the new students, difference being that one of these students was a rather attractive female, who at the time didn't really catch my attention. As the year went on I became more and more interested in her, as I found out more about her, and it seemed that she liked me too. We had similar interests and were begging to start opening up to one another.
Before anyone says that I shouldn't be looking into one of my students, then let me put this straight. I have no contractual limitations when forming a relationship with anyone in the university, and all people in the university are over the legal age etc etc. It is however frowned upon by the upper management as some groups have to be reorganised, but this doesn't take time at all.
So with this in mind I still was wary of how to approach the situation, because if all went well then we could see each other more often. However if I did miss read the signs then I could be faced with an awkward position in my job role. I decided to confide in my friend, who listened and agreed to help assess the situation and bring us closer together. For the first month this was great, we spent more time together and it was good fun.
Now for the depressive part. To say the least I am destroyed over all of this as I found out last night that my so called friend, had taken advantage of the situation (That I had to take things slower than people normally would due to work implications) and decided to begin dating her. I really have no clue what to do or where to turn to, because I still, especially now, can't tell her how I feel. He did say he would never tell her and he feels like an arsehole, however I just don't think that quite cuts it. Am I over reacting? SI there anything I can do about the cluster fuck of a mess I'm in now?

Basically: Emotional and/or Intellectual connection + Sexual connection = A dating relationship. Just emotional + Intellectual connection = Friendship.

Being in an exclusive relationship does not necessarily equal sex all the time. You can certainly cheat on someone before you start having sex with them.

You reek of someone thats never had a relationship before l0l. If you're dating someone(put a label on it for example) cheating is usually a bad thing, unless you decided on an open relationship, which most people arent cool with.
Again, how is it a "relationship" if they're not having sex? If I were dating a girl for a long period of time without having sex ( not that I ever would. Just seems stupid IMO ) I would not have any qualms about having sex with someone else, and I wouldn't expect the girl to not have sex either. That's just me though.. Agree to disagree.

Basically: Emotional and/or Intellectual connection + Sexual connection = A dating relationship. Just emotional + Intellectual connection = Friendship.
So yeah sexual connection is a necessary ingredient to a dating relationship.

Are you really saying any girlfriend or boyfriend anyone's ever had *doesn't count* unless they've slept together? Or that your girlfriend doesn't *really* become your girlfriend until you've had sex? That's ridiculous, and it's just trying to play off semantics, because what the hell is an exclusive "friendship"? A relationship doesn't start at sex; there are countless other intimate moments and flirting and dating that you've agreed not to perform with others.
If you agree to be in an exclusive relationship with someone, and you end up sleeping around, you've cheated. Period. That's not an opinion; you're literally breaking the agreement between you and your partner. That's what it means to be cheating in a relationship.
If you're unhappy with the arrangement of the relationship (whether sex is expected or not expected or anything else is lacking), you should talk to your partner and try sorting things out. If they can't be sorted out, you should break up with them for whatever reasons, and then move on to fucking other people. You don't cheat on your significant other first and then pretend it's validated just because your dick is in charge.
Sex is extremely important to many relationships, but wanting to have sex with other people just because it's sex doesn't override the commitments you make in an exclusive relationship.
