Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.
Japan has a mix of PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor), BWR (Boiling Water Reactor), and several ABWR (Advanced Boiling) plants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_reactor#Classifications). All three of these kinds of reactors are the safest reactor types currently in commercial use.
All of these reactors (and most of the other ones) are designed to handle loss of coolant circulation with their backup systems for certain periods of time. These times are long enough for most repairs to the coolant system. Since Japan has strict earthquake codes, I imagine these are the safest commercial nuclear power plants on the planet.
On another note, I am looking forward to the new generation of nuclear power currently in testing and experimental phases. (One uses 99% of fuel, not hot enough to cause a melt, and one has a self limiting fission reaction (hotter it gets, the slower the reaction becomes)).

Are you okay? Have you gotten in contact with all your friends/family?
Yes. My phone was working there entire time so I've been answering emails and checking the news the entire day. I'm in souther Tokyo, and down here it wasn't so bad. Haven't been able to get in touch with my friend in Sendai yet though.

Do you mean Aomori? I couldn't find an Anomori town anywhere. Aomori prefecture is partly on the ocean, but the city is somewhat protected by a big bay and not far from mountains. From what I found, they still have a tsunami warning, but it's not as severe as the coastal areas. I haven't seen any news of damage from the city itself.

That's really sad...
I have some parents in region of Aichi-Ken, can you tell me how bad is that area. I understand japanese, so if you know any TV Stream or radio, even sites which is better than NHK would be useful.NHK doesn't update really often, or provide pics...
an entire town in iwate prefecture was destroyed by the tsunami. just, there's nothing left. they've found hundreds of bodies in sendai's wakabayashi ward.
Does 88k surprise you guys? I expect for the death toll to be in the hundred thousands minimum. An 8.9 is not to be taken lightly. 2nd strongest earthquake this last decade and the 7th most powerful in recorded history.

Entire communities have been swept away. I think a lot more bad news will come from there and the passenger train and ships swept away are only a small part of it.

This looks pretty serious I hope there isn't too much injury in the areas affected, and that all the TL members and others living in these places are doing ok, and that they can get in contact with others...
