Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

BBC have been quoting that Japan has the Fukushima plant 'under control' but they have evacuated around 3000 people from the immediate area around the plant.

I really hope that is not the case. Last I heard they put the fire out, and that the reactors were okay. But if they are having this much trouble, then maybe I heard wrong. Let this not be true!

According to the IAEA there is no nuclear radiation given off by the reactor. They shut it down completely.

Good god thats terrifing. I heard some news of a gas plant explosion but did not hear the extent of it.
It s sad news but it s also "lucky" that such an earthquake struck Japan, one of the most prepared country (antisismic buildings etc) or the death toll would have been much much worse.

Well, the fire itself does not seem to be thr problem. The heat radiated by the fissionable material is orund 7% of its energy output. That is why it needs cooling. I hope the flooding is sufficient for that.
I'm in Tokyo, just got my power and water back after an 8 hour outage. I'm a little bit to tired to go on a rant, but if anyone has any questions, I'll try and answer them here.
(Still feeling some minor after-shakes as I'm typing this up)

You cant believe the japaneses official comments 100%. Since saying their might be a meltdown could cause a mass panic.

BBC: An update now on the nuclear power station in Japan at the centre of a huge evacuation order: Officials have said the reactor cooling system that failed after the quake at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is expected to return to normal soon, according to the Jiji Press news agency. Thousands of residents were evacuated as a precaution.
