I like the deathadder, but I upgraded from Microsoft Intelli mouse so what do I know? I seem to claw my mouse since I have pretty big hands (I'm 190cm).

Mice not included in the poll that has votes:

I used to use the MX518 and its a really great mouse. But i switched to the diamondback 3g and have been very pleased with it. I use the palm grip and the diamond back better fits my hand for the purpose.

I've been using a touchpad for about 5 years now for everything, that includes playing Starcraft and whatnot (one of the many reasons why I suck at Starcraft). Although back home my parents have a Logitech Mini hooked up to their computer and it's really nice and responsive.

I don't know if Deathadder is the best one, but that's what I'm using atm so I'll vote for it.

I have pretty small hands so my switch from a G5 to Salmosa helped me a lot RTS-wise. Can say im quite pleased with it even if it does take some time to get used to the shape of the salmosa. But, it is still very light and you wrist won't get fatigued easily which is a big plus.

So my vote goes for the salmosa but i can't really say which i would prefer. Im hoping to buy the abysus and try it out any time soon when i'll have some extra cash.

If someone here wants to get some information on why a mouse is good and what mouses fit those conditions, of course shape is up to preference so it is not included in the benchmark.

My personal favorites are the SteelSeries Kinzu and Intellimouse Optical 3.0.
Kinzu doesn't really work for FPS games though because it seems to have huge +/- acc issues on low sensitivity.

Deathadder is currently considered to be the best mouse when it comes to the insides, you can think in many ways about the shape though as I myself don't really like it for example.

Lol, Mini Optical has absolutely awful tracking, you must give some good mouses a try if you feel like that one is nice.

Pros don't use Razer Salmosa Mini? G1 is hardly used anymore by anyone, Boxer and Stork bot have switched back to mini opticals a long time ago and I haven't seen anyone use anything but the mini optical in a long time.

And even the Mini Optical is a terrible piece of equipment for anything but SC which requires no good sensor from the mouse, for fps games or even SC2 you will easily notice the awful tracking of it.

For games where the mouse actually needs to be good the progamers usually use Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1, Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, Deathadder or something along those lines.

I use a logitech mini optical as a travel mouse, and a G5 as my home mouse. the LMO just feels so right in my hand, but I like the G5 for actually getting work done on my desktop computer. Also have the Razer Salmosa - it's not bad all things considered, since it's one of the few razer mice that fit my hand.

Haha~ I guess it's true, but the only comparison I have is the mice hooked up to the computers at libraries and my touchpad~

Honestly though I've always been more of a spectator than a player anyways.

Although razer products are REALLY amazing, the diamondback causes carpal tunnel. I'd go with some of their newer models for the shape.

Hey, I'm a big fan! Brown-nosing aside, do you know why that specific model is causing CTS?

design and weight are the only things that matter for RTS games (as long as the sensor isn't TERRIBAD). Currently using a modded DeathAdder (rubber grip on sides + feet) but I wanna get the Xai again, that shape is just awesome.

I have the following:

Logitech G5
Logitech G9
Logitech Mini Optical
Razer Abyssus (newly revised Salmosa)

Logitech Mini Optical wins for me by a large margin. The G9 is a terrible mouse ergonomically speaking so I won't even get into that - basically instant CTS.

G5 is good for palm grips but I find that less than ideal for RTS, but is your comfortable everyday mouse.

It comes down to the Abyssus and the LMO for RTS games, and while the Abyssus does have better DPI and theoretically better tracking, the buttons are louder than the LMO, the feet are much noisier on my Razer Exactpad (quite ironic, isn't it?), and I hate the extremely slippery sides of the mouse (what was Razer thinking?!). The LMO has nice quiet buttons, tracks well on my pad, and I can grip onto it without any issues. High DPI is completely useless for RTS games, anyways. You can't beat the price of an LMO, though they're being discontinued, which is quite a pity. On the other hand, I do prefer the overall shape of the Abyssus over the LMO by a bit.

LMO all the way for this fingertip grip user - just too many gripes about the Abyssus.

Originally I was happy with my G5 for Starcraft, but I didn't know what I was missing until I tried the LMO.

I would love the try the G1 or G3 if I can get my hands on it, but I doubt they will be better.

Currently using the Ikari (it's bad for SC, but not terribad) which is an awesome all-around mouse, very comfortable. I'm waiting for Blizzcon where i think Razer will announce their new line of SC2 branded products which will surely include at least one mouse.

Logitech G3 does the job quite well, I love it. All the other models are for right-handed only.

Razer products are so overated and overpriced, it's a real joke. I hate the whole publicity about ''You wanna be PRO at video games? Then you NEED our products!'' Then of course all the rich newb kids ask their parents a Razer mouse and keyboard for Christmas just so they can get owned on SC by some korean kid who plays in a PC Bang with the shittiest equipment ever.

If it was up there I'd be voting for the SteelSeries Ikari Laser, love its ergonomic design when I'm playing shooters but I find I'm comfortable using a claw grip for SC.

And when it comes down to it, I find SteelSeries' products more appealing then Razer or any other company.

Yup, for example abyssus has quite good shape. I had problems with my wrist before and I'm just amazed how it hurts so much less after I got abyssus.
I have small hand and use fingertip grip, that's probably important.

i am a huge fan of the lightest and cheapest razer models; i used to use a krait and now use a salmosa and i've been really happy with them both in terms of performance and comfort. i've never seen the need for a 'high-end' crazy expensive deathcopperadderxxx ultra with 10 buttons and a retina scanner, but then again i only play bw sc2 and tf2

Maybe you've guys read my thread a few weeks back about me getting a new mouse.

I bought the wireless Logitech Performance Moue MX. It's really good, and the wireless is so good that there's absolutely no difference with wired mouses. I surely recommend getting one.

Ugh, wireless. I will need a scientific examination of one of those before I ever try one again. The ones I've seen are really heavy too :/

My vote goes for Logitech MX300. I own a pair of them and as a former Quake 3 player, I needed a mouse that could keep up with my low sensitivity in a FPS. (62cm/360turn) I like the shape of the MX300, too.

Too bad the MX300 along with the MX500 (The best optical sensors of all time, the MX's.) are not made anymore.

i love my mini

I've had a number of mx series Logitech's and they always have a short life expectancy, but I do like them. I don't like the G series mice either (I have used the G5 and another one in the past).

The poll in the op is so bad.. There are 1000000000000000000 mice, and even if you could get all the mice on the poll, the results would be so small.

Mx518 is probably the most common mouse, doesn't mean it's the best. I've had the Mx500, 510, and 518 (all very much the same), and I never liked any of them. Too big and bulky. The side buttons and shape is nice for standard browsing but for gaming it sucks.

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=82573

I have used many mice. I have large hands. I use fingertip grip mostly. I prefer smaller/light mouse.

My Ranking:

Razer Viper:

Best gaming mouse I've had so far. Opti 1000dpi, Very light, Smooth struts on bottom, narrow & not heavy, and no extra bullshit buttons. I don't really like the rubbery grip clear line across the side but I don't really touch it anyways.

Logitech MX300:

Oldschool mouse, opti 600 or 800 dpi (cant remember), light when you remove the weight, same as above but slightly wider.

Logitech G3:

Laser 2000 dpi, same look as 300 but heavier and has extra buttons for web browsing.
Great mouse for browsing and still pretty good for gaming.

Logitech MX310:

Opti 800 dpi, used this mouse for years (had 2), pretty solid, never really liked the ergonomic shape but its pretty similar to the MX300 but slightly heavier (I think you can remove weight) and side buttons. Great for browsing and pretty ok for gaming.

Logitech MX500 & 510 & 518:

Opti 800dpi, used these mice for a long time, All pretty much the same, never liked the bulkiness or shape, heaviest of all these (even with weight removed), has side buttons for browsing. Good mouse for browsing not so good for gaming imo. PS- the only difference I found between these are the colors..

And of course I've gone through lots of cheapy opti mouse in the downtime between other mice.
If you must go with one of these the best one I had was something like 'A4 tech' and it was grey kinda slender/long and light opti mouse with 800dpi I think. Pretty light weight as well.
looks kinda like this:

PS- I currently have G3 and Viper plugged in simultaneously and I switch between them for gaming/browsing.
The G3 has much higher sensitivity.

PPS- If you use my mouse button fixing guide/blog the MX300 is the hardest to fix. And I haven't tried opening the Viper or G3 yet to check for weights because the screws are under the struts (but I think they don't have any anyways).

also to note, I dunno if it was a driver thing but I since changed my mind and used the g3 for gaming and never looked back. (although the left button did just malfunction yesterday, logitech has like 5 year warranty and I'm gonna get a replacement for free, no shipping or anything)
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

I consider no mouse to be close to optimal. I think it's so they can keep coming out with a better mouse and people buy it. How fucking hard could it be to make a small mouse with a good shape and buttons at the right spot with a good sensor thrown in it.

I know some fps players prefer to palm the mouse but it's stupid. Using finger tip control is faster and honestly it give you more control so no reason to use palm grip.

First gaming mouse I had was a mx310 which served its purpose at the time. Next mouse was a copperhead and omg never get a copperhead. Got a g3 after that and was genuinely happy with it but has it's faults. After feet wore out I decided to get a g9.

For those who don't know g9 has "grips". The are shells you put on mouse that have a different shape. The control grip is designed for finger tip. Not only is it not small enough(like EVERY other mouse) the thing is not made for freaking human hands. How your pinky and index finger rest on it as feels very uncomfortable but also very poor control, it can slip a bit if you pick up mouse. Plus the material used on it is funky to touch it.

There is a secret option for g9 no grip. While not designed to be held without shell it's easily better shape then control grip. The sides are flat and vertical and thumb buttons are more difficult to press but the biggy is that it's pretty small for gaming mouse. Only adjustment on size needed is to take a lil bit off the end.

Then there's fat grip and well it's fat but actually a really fucking comfortable mouse with the greatest material ever on a mouse. I guess I don't need to tell you problems with a mouse being fat though. I used no grip for about half a year then fat grip for a month and I'm thinking of trying to go back to no grip.

What do you guys think of teflon feet? Would it make mouse too slippery. My g9 mouse feet have been fucked up since the beginning since 50% of the feet aren't touching mouse pad.

I'll give you a mini review as i just recently bought a xai laser mouse (new steelseries one):

I just recently bought the Xai laser mouse. My old mouse was the intelli explorer 3, i bought it because loads of the fps forums said "this is the mouse to buy, all the pros use it!" but i found that because of my screen resolution(1650x1080), on everything except SC the mouse wasn't very good. Intelli only has like 400dpi so unless you play on 600x800 screens or a game like sc that runs at that reso/lower then all of these mice the pro use, including the mini optical, are useless for any modern game or reasonable resolution, that's what you should invest in a high dpi mouse if you want to play sc2.

LCD thingey on the bottom

The steelseries Xai for me is perfect, it lacks drivers, so no fail to load drivers or other driver problems, and you won't find the accuracy problems that software acting as a middle man brings. There is a small lcd on the underside of the mouse that you can change profiles/settings with, also there is software which will allow you to change everything too, but you hit save and it loads it onto the mouse. Also if you go to lans i guess it's pretty useful to have all the dpi settings ect hardwired, but i sure don't get use out of that function.

It's got 5000+ dpi, which is pretty sick, nice weight, not weighted too much in the centre or front or anything, pads on the bottom are not glue based so apparently you don't get dust (that's what it says on the website, haven't had it long enough to test that). It's got 2 side buttons on each side, so that's 4 extra buttons ontop of the standard two, which is cool, although as a right handed person this ambidexteric mouse makes it quite hard to press the buttons on the right hand side.

If you have massive hands i wouldn't recommend this mouse, it's smaller than the intelli explorer, about the same size of the salmosa. It's a smart mosue, nothing fancy like razer, quite simple looking, and from what i've read anyways steelseries are meant to last longer than razer, but tbh my bro's razer hasn't broken and he's had it at least a year now so. And lastly there is an on the fly dpi switch on the top, not sure i really need it, maybe if you are a cs pro (or think you are) you might need this. Mainly i use it to pick dpi for different games without having to go through the menu to change the dpi to compare it.

The price is a bit steep I'll say that but i think it was a good investment, definitely the best mouse I've bought

Hope this helps!

So it seems like certain mouses work better for fps than rts and vice-versa. Speaking strictly SC and SC2, which would be most optimal?

Logitech G7, which is basically a wireless Logitech MX518

and I know how people feel about wireless mouses and latency, I'm really picky about that too.
Had it for about 2 years now, and I couldn't tell the difference in response between this and a wired mouse. It's awesome. Too bad they don't make em in europe anymore, if I ever break it..

I used to use a Razer Copperhead, but I got a Steelseries Kinzu for free and have been using it ever since. It's a really simple mouse but it is amazing. It feels so comfortable and smooth, I would def recommend it ^^.

If someone here wants to get some information on why a mouse is good and what mouses fit those conditions, of course shape is up to preference so it is not included in the benchmark.

according to this site mx518 kills

and i completely agree with that statement

what a horrible post

first of all, you are wrong about "pros" using that. Second, 6 feet tall guy has much bigger hands compared to a 5.6 guy. Youre suggesting to use same mouse size with way bigger hands, thats just absurd

The MouseScore results are heavily skewed towards FPS play. In RTS, everyone will be using high sensitivity because speed is more important than perfect accuracy by a lot. So even the worst mouse on that list wouldn't make any difference (it would never experience its malfunction speed or lose perfect control).

The only thing that's really important in RTS is the DPI setting of the mouse and the weight distribution of the mouse (meaning the way the weight is distributed across your grip). The proper DPI will depend on the resolution at which you play the game, and the weight distribution is important because you will be in constant motion with the mouse and don't want to lose your grip because of induced torque.

Most modern gaming mice have perfect control speed way above what would be physically possible for even the fastest gamers. In terms of perfect control, just about any mouse is fine - Logic MX518, Razer Diamondback 3G, DeathAdder, Salmosa, Abyssus, SteelSeries Xai, etc...

Other parameters about the sensor you should consider are:
1. Does it have line correction / drift control? Many sensors have this, and it is annoying if you want the best control. SteelSeries Xai has the ability to disable this (they call it FreeMove) and some of Razer's latest mice such as Abyssus also disable this (good thing).

2. How high is the lift off distance (how much do you have to lift the mouse before it stops tracking)? Generally, lower lift-off distance is better. If you pick up the mouse a lot, it is annoying for the cursor to move inconsistantly as you pick up the mouse and set down the mouse. This distance depends on both mouse and mousepad, but the effect is usually multiplicative:
- suppose mouse x has 1mm lift off with pad a, and 2 mm lift off with pad b,
- suppose mouse y has 1.5mm lift off with pad a, then mouse y will have ~3mm lift off with pad b

Ugh, wireless. I will need a scientific examination of one of those before I ever try one again. The ones I've seen are really heavy too :/

The mouse is indeed quite a bit heavier than the mouse I had before (Logitech Mx510). Still, I just LOVE the fact that there's no wire tugging my mouse all the time. Maybe not the best mouse for competitive StarCraft, you're right. I'd still take it over any other mouse for slower paced games like League of Legends or the RPGs I usually play.

I love mice with ergonomic shapes. The Deathadder is perfect in my eyes. It's big enough that my hand doesn't cramp after 20 minutes, and of course all that super fast responsive hype.

used the logitech mx510 for like 5 years. best mouse i have ever used. i had a smaller mouse, i think logitech optical? i don't remember but it was a small mouse and i actually broke the right click button.

i actually had to change my mouse to the mx518 this year because i couldn't find the 510 for sale anywhere. this mouse seems to be exactly the same except it doesn't have the same speed settings as the 510 which made me cry for a couple months on iccup because i kept misclicking so often.

voted 518 but would have voted 510. also, i'm not a fan of razer mice. i have a deathadder sitting in my basement and i just hate the feel.

also, i'm a palm gripper

Deathadder is my favorite on that list, using it right now. I just wish it were a little bit smaller.

I also love the Logitech Mini Optical, but it's only good for BW Can't do twitch movements in FPS games with it, and I can't be bothered to just keep switching between it and my Deathadder.

This was a really good read!

But I have a question. How do you overclock your mice (as he recommends MX300 & 500 owners should do to get max performance)? And does anyone know if overclocking a LMO helps out with the tracking?

So far I like my Salmosa best. Other mice are very close though.
I used a MX518 for quite a while and still have one on my other system, but nowadays I prefer smaller mice.

Its funny you say that, I've recently replaced my death adder due to causing me wrist pain, and it also puts pressure on the same area of my palm. Which is unfortunate because the mouse tracks flawlessly.

Tried replacing it with a xai, lol that thing is bad... so many technical problems I had to send it back for a refund. It has a ton of positive acceleration, the mwheelup/down randomly activate while the mouse is being used(in FPS's these tend to be auto-bound to switch weapon, which is how I noticed it), and the mouse is useless on a cloth pad, it collects lint over the laser and causes extreme tracking problems. I googled each of these problems as they came up to see if it was just a bad mouse, but alas, it seems many many people have the same exact issues with the xai. Which is unfortunate as the xai fits my hand better than any mouse I've ever used.

Replaced the xai with a Razer Imperator, research showed the mouse had a big z-axes tracking problem, but no other notable issues so I gave it a shot. First thing I did was test the z-axes problem, and it really isnt a big deal, whenever I pick up the mouse it moves like an inch to the bottom right, I don't play low sens games where this would be an issue for me. For the first two days of owning the mouse it had a bad tracking problem where if the mouse would sit and rest for a minute before being used again, it would 'wander'. As in when I go to click on a button/icon as soon as I stop moving the mouse it continued to move straight down every time about an inch. I started an RMA process when the problem just went away on its own after 2 days, I've had flawless x-y tracking since.

I've become a pretty big fan of the imperator, causes no wrist pain, tracks excellent(unless you pick it up) and it fits my hand great for both palm, and claw grip (I switch grips based on what I'm doing in game never even noticed it until people started all this mouse grip talk) I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a right handed ergonomic mouse.

I've tried :
- Logitech :
Mini Optical
Mousewhell Optical (exactly the same as G1)
MX5XX

- Razer :
Diamondback
Copperhead
Krait
Deathadder

- Microsoft :
Intellimouse (i don't remember which one, it was one of the first optical microsoft mice)

I'm a palm user. So far my favorite : mx500 (the intellimouse is a very close one too)
The Steelserie kinzu seems really really nice judging from the pic...

And finally at the very least : all of the razer mice. You read it right. I'm not a logitech or microsoft fanboy or whatever but all of the razer mice annoyed me to no end. The least annoying was the deathadder but it already broke in like 3 month. Since then i've been replacing it with the mx510.
I'm not sure if the razer's users have actually tried the others mice. Pretty surprised at the result tbh...

Hey, I'm a big fan! Brown-nosing aside, do you know why that specific model is causing CTS?

Therefore, I'm now a big Kaboo fan! :D

I think it's the fact that the back of the mouse pushes into the palm just under the knuckles. This has given me SO much ache and pain buuu. I love razer a ton though. Their products are THE best gaming mouses out there as far as I'm concerned. I'm going to replace my diamondback at some point with another razer product

Seeing that your using a mouse that you claim is causing yourself cts. Kinda contradicts the image of day9 being smart. Just saying.

he's saying that it causes him cts, and that he knows it. And thus, despite the positives of the diamondback (and razer products in general) he is going to replace it.

does that mean he's dumb? i don't think so...

Note the "at some point". It seems to me he has been playing with it for quite a bit of time and doesn't plan to get around to replacing it soon. Which is rather dumb. His gf even bought him a hand massager for cts.

I've had my Diamondback 3G for less than 2 Months and i am already having pains in my shoulder and neck from the weight and wrist has been hurting. I love it as a mouse and its great and all but i can't go on using it. Still haven't voted, i hated the Intellimouse, i have one and i can't even use it is so annoying. Getting an LMO in the mail next month sometime so ill vote about a week or two after i get it.

I'm disappointed that there's no option for the Razer Mamba on there. One of the best mice I've seen or used. Fits my hand perfectly and is super-responsive, even in wireless mode. But if I had to choose one from the poll, I'd go with the DeathAdder due to it being the same shape and size as the Mamba, I'd think it would be just as good.

I recently got the g9, it's not as comfortable for regular use, but it's really good for control and precision in gaming. not too big so it's good for finger tip fast movements.

I haven't found a mouse better than the Logitech MX518, though admittedly, I haven't had cause to really look over other mice. Has anyone switched from an MX518 to something comparable? Mine's on its last leg, and the only other option I see is the G5.

i use the logitech anytime ax mouse. yeah its not for gaming, it's for portable purposes (i have a laptop). but it's pretty big and the fucking awesome thing about it is that it works on ANY surface (including glass tables). darkfield laser ftw! my only qualms with it is its pathetic battery life (about 2 weeks >.> )

I bought a logitech mini optical because of the hype and it was a big disappointment. Ok this mouse fit well in my hand but its optical sensor is really bad. And it's not a question of dpi, my logitech G5 is way more precise even if I put it at 400 dpi.

Switched from a G5 to the Salmosa because of SC. No comparison for me, the salmosa wins hands down.

I definitely prefer the G5/MX518 for FPS games ex BF2BC and TF2.

I sat back and looked at how I used my mouse for fear of developing CTS in the near future. I don't think it's a problem if you have large hands. The only things touching my mouse are my five fingers. Maybe a light touch on the palm or so. I have big hands though (nearly 8 inches from wrist to tip of middle finger), so don't dismiss what Day is saying... It's Day[9].

Personally I use the Steelseries MMO (Wow) mouse and it just feels right in my hand it's also pretty big for those of us with larger hands (my friend is 6'6'' and LOVES it). I never get fatigue from using it and the way the mouse is designed none of your hand rests on the mousepad (which is a big issue I used to have with the sidewinder), but the price is a bit much. Around 80 dollars retail for cheap.

I have heard from a few people though that macroes will be supported in SC2 so all the extra buttons will be useful if macroes are in game (such as 1 button to select your hatch and make a drone).

is this for SC2 or SC1 or just in general?

I loved my Mini Optical for BW but I've found its difficult to use in SC2 with its low dpi, even though thats what made it great in bw

anyone else running into the same problems?

Well I've had the MX518 for a while now so I picked that one. I'm sure there are plenty of great mice that have been released since then, but I guess I'm the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." type so I've yet to try any of them... Maybe if my 518 finally breaks, I might look into another mouse, but if there isn't a huge difference, I'll probably just end up getting another 518 since I'm so used to it already...

i had mx518, after some time and beer spilled on it decided to try something different and bought a razer, shipped it back, got a g5, broke it in about a year and realized that mx518 is all i ever needed( its almost 3 years old now)

For all the people that are curious as to why the MX518 is picking up so many votes, it's really because it's a solid mouse that pretty much has everything you need in terms of performance for gaming. That coupled with the fact that it's been incredibly popular since its release easily explains the number of votes it has.

I would really like some of the haters out there to give some sort of performance reasons as to why it is they think the 518 "sucks for gaming"... Personal grip preference and comfort aside (since these change from person to person), I really can't see how the mouse would fall short at all in terms of specs as they relate to practical application and results, much less fall so short that it could be said that it "sucks"...

I used an MX510 for nearly 10 years and thought it was the best mouse ever. The thing is so old you can barely recognize the Logitech logo, and the paint has peeled off in multiple places. I picked up a Salmosa for $20 on a whim last year, and I absolutely love it. So much so that I can't believe I used an MX510 for an entire decade without ever trying out new mice. The MX510 is just so bulky and cumbersome in comparison. If you think your MX518 is a super awesome gaming mouse, it might be because you don't know any better.

Well, the "bulky and cumbersome" feeling would fall into personal comfort. I know some people who actually liked the weight of the old wireless mice with the AA batteries inside. Of course with the wireless mice, an argument can be made that they are less suitable because of their latency (especially for older models), but when it really comes down to it I can't help but feel that wired mice started to reach their limits even before the release of the 518... Of course the 518 is still an optical mouse and we've had laser mice released since then, but I've yet to hear about significant and appreciable strides made in actual performance. It feels like the focus lately has been more on ergonomics and features (like adjustable weights or grips) than on things like DPI and tracking, maybe because mouse manufacturers realize that a very small percentage of people actually turn their mouse DPI to the 1600 mark and above so there's little point or little room left for improvement that could really be felt...

Of course people naturally gravitate toward the latest products when it's time to buy new peripherals, but I think sometimes we need to sit back and ask ourselves how much better they actually are. Of course this isn't to say that ergonomics and comfort aren't important, but mainly to point out that ergonomics is not something you could objectively point out as being better or worse for all people. Truth be told, I feel like more progress has been made in recent years in the field of mouse pads than mice themselves... All this being said, of course I will certainly try out some of the newer mice when the time comes, but I will find it hard to justify spending an extra $30 or so if the only real difference I can notice while using it is the shape (unless that shape is somehow significantly more comfortable) or some extra buttons...

I would actually be curious to know how many votes a mouse like the MX310 would have gotten since it's even more common and few people would probably notice a real difference between that and the 518...

Voting for Salmosa since there is only one better mouse for me, and it isn't on the list: the Razer Abyssus! . ( i actually think it's almost the same mouse anyways so no big deal here)

also for SC LMO was great, as were good old Logi MX310

Woot...found a G3 for $30 and decided to jump on it. For some reason I love to hoard computer peripherals. We'll see if this mouse can dethrone the Mini Optical, but I have strong doubts...

For anyone who owns both, can you compare the handling, and clicking noise of the two?

It's pretty natural since mice tend to be a long term investment for people. I can't think of a whole lot of people who spend enough time trying out 20 different mice to see which one is actually best. Generally people will do a little bit of research and just buy one and stick with it unless the one they buy is really horrible. Especially when it comes to gaming peripherals, where being accustomed to your peripheral is a key point to consistent performance, it does no good to constantly be swapping your equipment.

I'm still using my MX510. My hand is pretty big. How big is your hand and how do you hold the Salmosa?

Edit: I lied, it's an MX500. They're basically the same though.

Been using the Copperhead for just over two years now, 2000 DPI is more than fast enough to get to where you need to be quickly, but low enough that accuracy doesn't go out the window. I've never once had the mouse skip, or get stuck while playing. I'm looking at picking up a new Razer mouse sometime in the near future, most likely the Salmosa. I gave up on wireless mice a long time ago, and I do not intend to go back, I'm sitting AT my computer, I'm not really sure why the cord is bothersome.

As a multimonitor high resolution user and user of a wrist pad i use the g9 for everything mostly becuase it's great outside of gaming more so then it is inside of gaming it's not like i'll use two mice one for productivity and one for gaming.

My mouse got here rtoday (REALLY FAST shipping) its a LMO and i am EXTREMELY happy with the quality of this mouse. Based on the mouse alone the things i like are: The scroll wheel - you can distinctly tell how many notches you are scrolling, The grip - It almost forces you to use a Claw grip (maybe fingertip) and it just feels comfortable with that grip. and the buttons depress very quickly and its just an awesome mouse.

Just bought a Razer Lachesis, and I'm really satisfied with the feel of the mouse. I'd like to know one thing though - do you guys use any special mouse pads and, if you own one, do you consider it a waste of money or a good buy i.e. the 50€ Razer mouse pads? I'm currently using my mouse on a wooden surface, which has the typically marbled woody look to it, and I see my cursor skip from time to time. Is that due to the marbled surface or is that a hardware flaw?

Is it purely the mouse or also uber long gaming sessions that would get you CT with any mouse?

My guess (educated guess) would be that its the wooden surface.
Personally i have a cloth mousepad and i don't think its bad at all. Many people have the Exactmat (my friend has one) but i don't know that it matters too much.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll test it out and see how it performs.

This is very true.
The Salmosa is a breath of fresh air for fingertip gamers with short fingers.
I railed on Razer heavily and angrily across the internets about 2 years ago when I purchased the copperhead because it's for fingertip gamers! only to find the thing was far far too goddamned long, it's a huge mouse due to it's length :/

The Salmosa regular (haven't tried mini) is amazing for someone with small hands and who is a fingertip gamer. Conssidering I have such small hands, it would've been better if I was a palmer but that's just how it is, I need a very small mouse.
MX518 is bad in my opinion.

What I do need though is a small mouse with many buttons for FPS games, I currently have this.
http://images.google.com/images?q=microsoft intellimouse optical -explorer symmetrical&hl=en but I'd like something more modern, possibly even smaller and with another button on the left for my thumb. (I've been considering the Xai but goddamn it's expensive)

It's in no way connected to the LMO known to SC players, its just smaller so its "mini plus". The shape is pretty terrible when I used it a few years ago and afaik. it does have 400 dpi and just as terrible sensor as the LMO.

I've used the Death Adder, Diamondback, Lachesis, MX518, and the Intellimouse 3.0. ...and the Naga.

I loved the Intellimouse 3.0, and I loved it a lot. Unfortunately, they saw fit to make the 4.0 and drop the 3.0. I died a little inside. I used that mouse until the day it died and still keep it's corpse within arm's reach of my computer, just so I never forget it's gaming glory.

MX518 was my next mouse of choice, and I've been recommending that mouse ever since. It has a really comfortable grip due to it's surprisingly large size. My only complaint ever was button number 8 sitting too far back behind the scroll wheel, I never used it.

The Razer products seem to be designed to fit different hand gripping styles, and always bothered my hand a bit, especially the way they prefer "dead space" between parts of your hand and the mouse. I use a more resting position on my mice, so I prefer a mouse designed for such. Though, I have to admit, the Naga has a whole crap top of buttons on the side. I like buttons, a lot. So I scooped up the shiny for my current rig, but still keep my MX518 on standby.

BTW, the Naga is too small... I expected a 17 button mouse not to leave half my hand off the back. Gives it a nice pivot point, but stresses my arm a bit because of it.

I think a lot of the "gaming" mouses have unnecessary crap and end up being too heavy, but I'm sure there is one out there that is nice and light...

for me microsoft basic optical mouse v2.0 is perfect.. good shape and very light

Im looking for a new mouse for my new laptop im getting mostly going to be paying sc2 and TF2 maybe some other fps also. Was looking at getting the logitech G500 what are your guy's thoughts?
I have big hands and can use either grip but I think I use claw grip more. I like logitech's warranty. and I also like how some of the razers feel.
The laser on the g500 is positioned more forward which I would think would work good for fingertip swinging and accurate movement instead of being centered where u have to move more your arm with it.

I have to say any one who is accustomed to the MX510 or MX518 will really enjoy the Razer Imperator.

The Imperator offers more features than the MX series with multi position thumb buttons, higher polling rates ect. It also is not nearly as heavy as the MX mice.

I just picked up an Imperator and absolutely love it so far, and would recommend it to any one who has used and enjoyed the MX series mice in the past.

I`m using mx518. Probably not the best mouse there is for me since my hand is fairly small. Not like it really matters at the level I play.

I'm afraid its buttons are quite high off the ground and it looks larger than the salmosa. Is that true? I have really small hands

I've been using the Logitech VX nano for the past ~2 years and its very small but unfortunately it broke

Hmm now that I think about it my grip is more of a finger-tip style, I dont even touch my palm with the back of the mouse

MX518 is my first optical mouse, been using it since then. I thought it wasnt comfortable for playing Starcraft though :/

For FPS its hands on the most comfortable one yet. Its still relatively expensive these days, the price has changed.

Well if we dont favor the mouse, why purchase it in the first place? I like the MX518, purchased it twice, that counts as a preference.

Mx518 and MX310 are the best mice for gaming as a study has shown. But the shape and weight also plays a factor in a good mouse that the study didn't take into consideration.

I've always hated most Razer mice so much because of the shape of them. They almost always feel so awkward in my hand. ;(

I have a Logitech G5 right now, and I really love it, but I'm sure there are even better mice than that so I don't really feel like I could judge what the "best" mouse is.

I think the MX518 would be too heavy for RTS in general. Though for precise clicking and movement its a fine product.

For SCBW and unless you have gorilla hands logitech mini is by far the best mouse there is. No wonder 80% of the pros use this mouse. I used it for about 6 years and it kicks ass, very reliable too.

For SC2 and if you have big hands a good pick would be the G3. Too bad Logitech is now all about fancy looking "gaming" mice and cordless stuff. Mini is a bit outdated for bigger screen resolution.

A nice alternative would be Logitech RX250 (mx 300/G3 shaped) which is really unexpensive and has a very decent 1000 dpi.

Forgot to mention I tried Razer Krait once which is supposedly a RTS mouse and I really really disliked it. It is sensitive but in a very weird way and the shape isn't comfortable at all imho (way too long).

I don't like gaming mouses cause my hand's are too small and i use a weird hybrid palm/fingertip grip. I prefer mini optical mouses like the logitech, and the one i'm using right now is an A4 optical, which fits my gaming grip really well. It's small, simple, quick, and good. D

As a competitive CS 1.6 player from back in the day, gotta give a shout out for the MX518. I find my click accuracy is very good in SC, but I am only a C-level player, so don't take my word as gospel for SC :D

Voted copperhead...

Been using the copperhead for ages when I was playing war3/cs

Recently got a salmosa before they discontinued it and use it for work, I tried it with games and prefer the copperhead.

The deathadder is a good mouse also as I have tried on my friends one.

Switched to the deathadder from the MX518. Not regretting it at all. I like the increased responsiveness, although it did take me a bit to get used to.

I will say i feel like the 518 is more accurate though. I just don't want to admit my skills at 1.6 have significantly degraded in 5 years away. (but seriously, i think the mouse does have a little bit to do with it).

For nearly 10 years it's been the Logitech Mx510/518.

But now I'm interested in checking out the new wireless Razer. It'd be nice to get rid of wires except for charging.

1.MX518 / MX510
2.G5

I bought 2 razer mouses and tossed them away, overpriced, plastic and have clicking problems. Also they are so small for my hands, maybe they are good for asian users, who have tiny hands. They are very well designed though.

Logitech G9x for me. I can safely recommend it to everyone. Especially if you like Logitech's form.
Batteries of my old cordless one were getting useless. I'd never recommend a cordless mouse to anyone. So I did check some sites a few weeks ago. Recommended links for everyone considering to get a new mouse:

(old but the kind of testing a mouse is different from all standard tests)

(watch video tests à la above link, but more recent)

I use BOTH MX518 and MIni Optical

I've used ie3.0, G5 and tried out many other mice

BOTTOM LINE, LOOK NO FURTHER :
MX518 for FPS
Mini Optical for RTS

GOLDEN COMBINATION.

Don't see why Kaboo has to be so biased against the IME 3.0 and not even put it up on the poll. It is by far the best mouse for value, one of the best mice period, and they last forever. They're especially good for people with large hands, and you know what they say about large hands (big gloves).

As a former pro CS player, I'll stick to the IME 3.0 for a long long time.

I have tried many mice. I can't use any mouse other than a mouse shaped ergonomically like a mx518. My hand hurts way too much after even a short gaming session with any razer mouse.

How is the Imperator not on this list....

plus, keep in mind that many people "voting" haven't used more than one or two of these, so the opinion will be incredibly ill-informed.

Why is logitech g5 even in this poll? That thing is heavy as an iron anvil. It's great for Counter-Strike but terrible for Starcraft.

The Salmosa is by far the best for starcraft but most people don't have the apm and multitasking to realize this.

I recommend everyone here plays osu! if they want to get better at using their mouse.they see how big of a difference using a smaller one makes; because you wont be able to do the higher tier maps on it unless you have near perfect mouse settings and control.

Just ask KawaiiRice if you dont believe me.

I'm using a 518, and have been for the past 5 years. I started raping in FPS after switching to it.

Although I'm really interested in trying the mini optical. The 518 is too heavy for RTS.

MX518 for my hands just did NOT work out right. Deathadder is still a little big, but there is not a smaller mouse I can find that is just as good as the Deathadder. The Lachesis was loud with the clicker, and a little weird to hold since it was ambidexterous. If they made a smaller deathadder I'd definitely order that in a heart beat, the tracking is just vastly superior than any mouse I've tried so far (Lachesis, Imperator, MX518, G5, etc...)

The MX518 is like the ultimate mario mouse - reasonably good options for everything, although probably not the best at any single facet. Certainly my favorite of everything I've used. The only downside is that the mouse is not very light, which means my grip doesn't lend itself to especially fast movement, so I have to operate at higher mouse sensitivity. I do use a fingertip grip, slightly modified because I use an ergonomic mousepad with a wrist support. (I have never been able to use a claw grip due to extremely long palms.)

Logitech G5 works perfectly for me in SC2, but it's horrible in SC1.

For SC1 I use some 10€ Microsoft mouse that came with my laptop.

But i can't really say what's the best mouse, cos I havn't tested any other mice.

Logitech is awesome. I've had this wireless Logitech mouse for over 13 years and it is still working fine. That means, I got it in 98, around the time StarCraft came out, a little later, and I've have been pretty much been playing all my games with it since then. Still using it right now. The wheel may be a little bit wobbly, but everything is still working really damn well, in terms of precision/reliability etc. I'd tel you the model but the label it so worn on the bottom it is hard for me to tell.

Anyways, point is Logitech rules!! Yay!!

I prefer the shape of the MX518, and the ability to customize DPI to match my SC2 resolution. Since I played BW at 640*480 with a 400dpi mouse, I've found the best way to handle SC2 is to use the same ratio of DPI to horizontal resolution. Thus for 1680*1050, I use 400/640 * 1680 to arrive at 1050DPI, easily set in the Setpoint software. Then I can leave Windows mouse speed at 6/11 and SC2 at 50% to have the same mouse speed in Windows and SC2. Tried a Razer Abyssus but didn't like the way the buttons flared at the edges.

MX518 feels the best in my hand. I had the MX300, MX500, MX510 and MX518. They usually broke after a year or two when I was playing CS1.6 hardcore, and had my current mx518 for 3 years now (only playing bw and sc2).

1-anyone knows if Logitech Mini Optical is out of production?

if so, what's the upgraded model of this mouse.

logitech doesn't have many good mice atm. They really need to have successors to the mini opti, g3, and mx300 indefinitely.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

man I'm disappointed in the lack of intelli mouse 3.0s

also I had a G5 before I bought this, used it for around 6 months and one day I was just browsing the web and the axel holding the scroll wheel in place broke, decided to get a 3.0 and haven't thought about another mouse since.

I'm using a logitech G9. I like it better for gaming than my previous mouse, the MX518, but it really only suits the claw grip. I think this is the best grip for gaming with precision but is just a bit less comfortable than a fatter mouse that you can rest your hand on when not gaming like the 518.

edit: but overall the G9 is an amazing mouse, really worth the cost imo. It's really solid and comes with tons of customizable features and also good software. I also really like that you can set the scroll wheel to fly freely.

mx518 is the best mouse of all time, it has everything just right. Although this is probably entirely by chance, the mouse is perfect for high DPI (high resolution) games.

this actually reminds of buying a spare mx518. i was really pissed off after my logitech dual optical (totally awesome!) kinda gave up on me. problem was i was foolish enough to use an everglide mousepad at the time without using extra glide stickers. meaning the glide pads were grated down eventually until the mouse was sliding on the entire plastic bottom.

after i found out it cannot be bought anymore i tried fixing it with some spaghetti pieces and glide stickers. but it didnt really work out (who would have thought of that?!)

my tweaked mx518 onto 500hz will serve me well for another 10 years...i just hope i have a brand new replacement one bought i can just unwrap and plug in when the time comes

gotta love the nerds

I've been using a Razer Krait for a year and a half now. Its size is great for my hand, but it's relatively small. I just like how it's so simple and cheap, but with the accuracy we all expect from a Razer.

Really, mice don't matter at all, if you don't use a ball mouse or one that skips/ has really bad + or - acc, it doesn't matter. Even in FPS games like Quake or CS, where you think that the pros all use really high tech mice to maximize aim or reaction time, they don't. Most use 400 DPI 10$ Microsoft mice unless they are sponsored and need to endorse a product.

So im looking to replace my krait. Is there much diff between the salmosa & abyssus comfort wise?

I wanna get something without drift control. And its highly unlikely ill find them in a store that i can go to and test.

Currently using the MX518, which I am loving. Having previously used Explorer 3.0, which also is a decent mouse. But I prefer to MX518. Never been a Razer-kind off guy.

I voted G3 because that's what I've used for years since my last logitech broke. It's the most comfortable mouse for me. I've never been a fan of these lumpy, oddly shaped mice.

However, since they don't make them anymore, my next mouse, if I had to buy one now, would be a Logitech MX300 - hands down. Outperforms almost anything out there and it maintains the classic logitech shape I love.

I have used multiple mice over the years, and have mainly been a fps gamer. I really enjoy rts as well though and trying to get better and deeper into the mindset of rts.

I had a logitech mx500 and must say it is a outstanding mouse.

Although I've had two steelseries mice, a ikari laser, and a ironlady. I think I will stick with the steelseries mice because I do love them so much. They are the most comfortable mice i've used.

I suggest the siberia headset as well! (:
