Ronaldo was the only player on par with Zidane in that era in my opinion.
top team players get overrated I agree but look back at the performance when he was still in Juventus. I mean he literally carried the team into 3 CL finals in a row.
Seriously Totti was comparable to Del Piero or Ruud Gullit at best if we are talking about their peaks
I would say Roma won the serieA mostly because of Capello being the coach there that season.

Thx to Holgerius campaign, Totti has lost X amount of respect at this community. TBH it seems to me Totti is now very underrated here, considering he was one of the best(or the best) player last decade. Only few players managed to stay on the top the whole time.
But compering Totti to Zidane is still stupid.

To wrap up the season, there are some high profile fixed games as usual, happens every year. I used to work for a bookmaker in uk and still know some of the staff. There are more in la liga and bundesliga but i don't have information about them. -man.united 2-1 arsenal watch diaby (honestly do u think they can win if u watch the whole game) -liverpool 1-2 arsenal watch glenn (same here) -portsmouth 3-2 hull (last min) most place bet on hull+1/2 and 3 of them are going down anyway(ports, hull,bu rnley) -burnley 0-1 blackburn ref side penalty kicks -chelsea 1-0 man.united most place bet on juicy united +1/2, a draw is enough to escape with profit -burnley 1-2 portsmouth ref side penalty kicks -1/5 of the birmingham games (chinese owner) there are several more i know in the future (eg liverpool v chelsea, might have overwhelming bets on liverpool because chelsea wrap up the title before the game) but i shan't list all of them.

oh lol Holgerius. Come on man.
Man U pretty much shot themselves in the foot (or Rooney shot himself in the knee so to speak). Our chances are slowing slipping away to win the league Unless Chelsea somehow loses to Bolton lol at home, lol again, we are going to be hurting real bad.
|
Man U doesn't need to win the trophy AGAIN! Let's give it to Chelsea!!
Hopefully we don't screw up our last few games and let the title run away from us.
Man U vs Man City is going to be great, City in good form and Utd not doing too well but i'm sure they'd be up for a derby.

You wouldnt rate Zidane higher than Scholes? Hahahaha.

QFT. Real Ronaldo is the only guy comparable. Losing A WC final, getting your knee badly injured and then scoring two goals in the final and winning the next WC. That's what i call being a champion.

@ Drone You have to be fucking kidding me comparing Klinsmann to Totti in terms of skill. O_o Klinsmann was awesome, but compared to players of Totti's calibre he is one-dimensional. Once again let me ask; how many games with Totti as a trequartista have you actually watched? Seriously?
Totti is a player who is excels in almost every aspect there is as an offensive player (started out as pretty much a winger, moved into the middle as a playmaker and then ended up at the top as a striker). The versatility he has is quite extraordinary.
He is a splendiferous goalscorer who's in the Top 10 in Serie A of all time (despite not playing as a striker for the majority of his career). There's a billion ways Totti can score goals; he has spectacular long shots and free kicks, goals after 60 meter solo runs, a dozen of brilliant chips, the ability to shoot just as well with his left foot (do me a favour and check out the goal vs Sampdoria 06-07). Simply put; a great blend of quantity and quality when it comes to goalscoring that few players in the world can match. Even pure poachers like Inzaghi are way behind in numbers.
He is a gifted dribbler. While he has basically never been the ''Lololol-I-can-do-40-stepovers-in-a-row-and-then-accomplish-nothing-but-at-least-I-look-really-fancy''-guy, he is more than capable of going past opponents or hold the ball in an excellent manner. These days he's pretty slow (plagued by constant injuries), but in his prime he made dazzling raids and embarassed the world class defenders that inhabit the defensively strong league that is Serie A. His technique is both functional and effective, yet he can still do fantastic things that makes you rub your eyes and wonder ''How the fuck did he do that?'' when he controls a long ball from the other side of the pitch perfectly with his backheel.
And then his main attribute; he is one of the most excellent playmakers the world has ever seen, the vision he has is unrivaled. Watching Totti on a good day is fucking orgasmic, it's football porn at it's best. There are passes and throughballs that would make Xavi green with jealousy (not really, but they're on the exact same level and Totti does it in a tougher area of the pitch and often with little space and his back to the goal), beautiful backheels and flicks that can penetrate even the most turtling teams (watching 3 guys surround him and then get completely fooled by a backheel is so hilarious). The role he once had in Roma (and sometimes in Italy) was one that I cannot find an equal to, he was such a one of a kind focal point for the entire offensive. As soon as his team won the ball he would drop down, receive it and then there would be a goalscoring chance seemingly out of nowhere. One touch and then someone was set up superbly. Truly one of the best one touch passers ever.
And fucking fuck, the major reason the world will not look back on Totti as a GOAT candidate is indeed titles, both individual and with teams (they go hand in hand generally). I guarantee you 100% that Totti would've gotten the World Player of the Year-award instead of Zidane if simply any italian player had scored that golden goal instead of Trezeguet. He wasn't one bit inferior to Zizou in that tournament, in the final or the entire year. I also feel very confident that he would've had a good shot at winning it in one of the non WC or Euro years if he had been in a big club that had won CL. 2 of Cruyff's Ballon d'Or's came during seasons when Ajax won the European Cup you know. You are so blind and ignorant if you can't see this; really, the reason we haven't been able to point out one season where Totti has been the ''best player in the world'' is very much due to no success with his club, because week out and week in for 10 years he has, as an individual, delivered world class football on the exact same level as Zidane and Co, yet anglophiles like you don't even seem to realize it. Fuck. During most of these years he's been overall just as good or better than the winners of the individual awards, but when you don't get the silverware you have no realistic chance of winning them. During 06-07 I watched nearly every single game with both Roma and Milan, and Totti was outshining Kaka literally ever week. He scored over 30 goals that season, won the assist league at the same time and was playing like a god for the most of the time. Still, Milan won CL so Kaka won the Ballon d'Or (who deserved it though due to the marvellous tournament he had, but overall Totti was at least his equal and when they met H2H Totti scored the goals and won the game for Roma). Totti was even kept out of the 30 man shortlist for Fifa World Player of the Year, it was fucking absurd and pathetic. Roma gets knocked out by a team whose last three signings costed as much as every player Roma bought the previous three seasons (or something absolutely silly like that, can't remember exactly now) and that means his ridiculousy impressive season means nothing? Bullshit. So yeah, skillwise he's such an underrated player and I do stand by the statement that he was Zidane's peer as far as skill goes. And once again, I fully agree that one cannot objectively claim that Totti is as great or legendary in the end, Zidane was just too insanely dominant and clutch in the biggest moments.
@ Whitebox Yes, from his generation Zidane and Ronaldo are both greater overall. And listen here; Messi, Rooney and a bunch of others > Totti lately. >_<
@ economist Totti is superior to Del Piero. The Italian Footballer of the Year-award has gone to Totti 5 times compared to twice for Del Piero despite the fact that Del Piero always played for the greater team and therefore had more success. When Italy raped in 2000 the star was Totti. When Italy won 2006 Totti was the one who provided more assists than anyone else, scored a game winning goal in the 94th minute, controlled the flow of Italy's game (together with Pirlo) with subtle methods and was elected into the official All-Star Team. Had it not been for the injury Totti would've been even better (before the injury he raped faces during Roma's crazy winning streak and after the WC he went on to become the most prolific goalscorer in Europe that season).
@ kroko I severly doubt I have undermined the respect for Totti, because I don't think there was any to begin with. Nice to see at least some acknowledgement for Totti though! ^_^ Totti's constistency is indeed a good thing to point out, he has been absolute world class since forever unlike many others who had mere seasons of dominance.

me comparing klinsmann to totti is something i consider a great compliment, klinsmann was pretty much my favourite player growing up. he was definitely more of a striker than totti but he actually really excelled in making great heel-passes and flicks, just like totti. they're different players and not really that comparable, that's something I agree with, but my point was basically that totti isn't going to be mentioned among the best players ever 10 years from now. klinsmann isn't mentioned among the best players ever today (and he wasn't 10 years ago), even though in 1990 he was among the best 3 strikers in the world.
basically, totti is more like klinsmann than he is like zidane.

but ok, how about this comparison then
matthew le tissier? he's probably the greatest player ever that never achieved a thing. :p best long shots through all time too.
and you can't say that I don't give him credit because im an anglophile, apart from the freshly mentioned le tissier I haven't mentioned any englishmen at all.. you can say that I'm an italian-hater and be somewhat on the money I guess, but it's not like zidane ever played for an english team.
|
How about no; you're comparing Totti to a guy who was never a regular in his national team? Wtf?
|
Norway28678 Posts
le tissier never being a regular in his national team wasn't at all because he wasn't good enough.
|
|
Le Tissier is the epitome of a player that was amazing for his club, which were never gonna win many titles and overlooked by the national coach

The Cassano of England?
Totti underperformed in Italy compared to how he plays in Roma, but he still contributed heavily to them reaching 2 finals in the 4 tournaments he played in (and in the 2 in which he fucked up, they failed hard).
|
if Roberto Baggio isn't considered in the top 5 why would totti be -_-
|
He shouldn't be, as I have said several times.
He might've been though, but he decided that he wanted to spit on people and stay in Roma.
|
matthew le tissier was silly good, i don't know how he never got more than 8 caps for england's 1st team.
+1 to holgerius and totti for using the word "splendiferous"
