Huh? You earn beakers per turn (top left). Every tech has a price in beakers (science). Every turn, your beakers get put toward developing any one technology. If you switch techs before it is completed, those beakers stay invested (you don't get a refund to spend those beakers on some other tech, and when you later switch back to that tech, it will start where you stopped). Eureka rewards reduce the total cost by half (and hence you can research half a tech, then switch if you think you'll get the Eureka reward). The civics tree works the same way, but with culture instead of science.
On a related note, know that Civ players will often say "beakers" not science (as above), and "hammers" not production. This may be confusing, since the icon for production is now a cog, but trust us, it used to be a hammer. + Show Spoiler +For some reason, no one calls culture "notes," food "corn," or faith "birds" (or snitches? that's what the CivVI icon looks like to me.)

Should we start some community games? Either pick a setting and map seed and have everyone give their input or everyone post their own playthroughs like the civfanatics community games.

Is there a way find out the map seed of the game you're playing?

I've never played a community game of CIV before. A set number of turns per player, with a written log?
Edit: In my mind, we'd have a save game that'd circulate as with the DF community game we had a few years back. Does that even work with CIV6? Is there a smarter, more awesome way to do things?

I really hope Firaxis buffs city states but at the same time allows to base aircraft and upgrade units in their territories if we are allies.
Would solve so many problems.

Hammers? You mean shields, right?

Completed my first game over the weekend (random Spain, Prince, 6 civs). I started about 5 games before this and kept rerolling within 100 turns because the early game feels very slow and unrewarding. With Spain, I stockpiled thousands upon thousands of Faith, switched to Theocracy, then bought a ton of Conquistadors and Infantry with Faith and dominated every other nation simultaneously.
I don't quite know what to make of Civ6. Maybe I haven't played long enough, but it didn't immediately grab me the way that Civ2 or Civ5 did. I'll try some more random games and see if my impression changes, but it felt like things went slowly. It's weird having games where, due to positional requirements, nobody builds the Colossus or other ancient/classical Wonders. I like that the leaders are a little more predictable in their behavior since you can immediately see their tendencies, agendas, likes, and dislikes.

That city tile breakdown is so hard to understand. I'm glad I started with Civ 2 though I don't remember what its city tab looked like either.

So once you discover the Satellite tech it doesn't reveal the entire map, is this a bug or am I missing something?

Yeah just figured it out as I finished a Spaceport District and started building a satellite then got a great scientist, oddly enough Carl Sagan, and sent him to the Spaceport and finished the Satellite next turn.

Also, crouching tigers suck.
Everyone starts in a similar position with what kind of resources are around them. So on balanced you might have at least 1 resource you can farm, 1 for a pasture, and something to mine. In standard, you might get stuck with 1 stone while the civ next to you gets two horses and cows.

I loved how the faces of the citizens would change based on era / happiness / specialization
