Has anybody actually succeeded in beating the first retaliation mission with mutons without a crazy amount of savescumming? I just finished it, just on veteran level, and I must have reloaded around 15 times easily. The aliens were killing a civilian a turn, forcing me to rush the alien groups with minimal setup. Mutons are absurdly powerful this early in the game and I got the shit aikido'd out of me when I tried to slash it with a sword.

Playing on commander level, got introduced to mutons and MECs on the same mission. Got wrecked, total squad wipe. I'm going to try it again tomorrow, but I'm not looking forward to it.

I'm against 2 guys in my 3rd mission, I ambush, and in one turn, 2 of my guys are posioned, so they're done, another guy gets knocked unconsious, sik 1, and then my last person panicks and jumps from the highground to miss a l33t pistol shot. ??????????????????

But honestly? Not better than XCom EU/EW. First and foremost, i don't think it's as enjoyable because i constantly feel under pressure by timed everything. Timed Missions, timed Strategic View, etc - i'm the kind of player that wanders off path to see shit (a "100% player"), this game punishes you heavily for straying off path. Not a fan of that. Timed Missions every now and then, okay - but here pretty much every mission apart from attacks on supply trains are timed (hard timers or soft timers like civilians). And the worst thing, personally: the strategic map. There's constantly interruptions, "look here!" - "no, look, more shit happening here" - "dark events, here, have a look, you can't do shit with that information but still, POPUP!". It feels like babysitting an ADHD kid on crack. All in all, it's a lot more stressful than XCom1 - while i do understand that this adds something for other people, it takes away for me. I want to relax while gaming, not being pushed around constantly. ![]() edit: and who thought it was a good idea to add the "come 'ere tongue attack"?

The world map tho. yeah there might just be to much stuff popping up trying to draw your attention from here to there. Don't really feel like I am time pressured there tho. I do almost all the 'gathering' so long as the reward is useful and so long as you do a blacksite now and then the avatar program is no issue (sofar, in July atm)

I love the pressure. Legendary/Ironman is only lacking in the very very very early game department difficulty imo, it keeps pace much better with the game, but i can see how after maybe 10 playthroughs i will have to mod it.

At the end of the day tho, its more X-com, and it scratches an itch that i can't scratch anywhere else. Maybe if i stop sucking so hard, the timed missions wont be an issue anymore, so let's keep killin some aliens shall we? gg gl.

Mutons are absurdly powerful this early in the game and I got the shit aikido'd out of me when I tried to slash it with a sword. I did, but that's because one of my snipers performed a SICK 7 damage hit on the 1st muton with a 37% hit chance, lol. The one time I reloaded was when I tried to sword chop the other muton, turns out that wasn't the brightest idea I had during the mission (he countered the sword chop for 6 damage :D) I noticed that in general since there are no chrysalids yet, you can forget going for civilians and just try to kill the aliens fast. This works excellent on veteran difficulty. Guys I... I don't want to lose dammit ![]() They're all finally good soldiers, with decent aim, I don't want to restart over and not get them from the character pool T.T And btw I adhere to the Marbozir school of thought that you resolve your problems with grenades :D That guy actually taught me how to play Xcom1 and Civ V. btw, will the skins I put on them save themselves in the character pool or will they reset and the next time I draw the soldier, I will have to reskin them again?

I have a few modded out guns that I rotate around as soldiers get injured and its annoying to have to go back to the armory to unequip them when they added buttons for the other items ><

The very slow overwatch creep always felt a bit cheesy to me but if you want to play like that I can certainly understand the frustration. I do almost all the 'gathering' so long as the reward is useful and so long as you do a blacksite now and then the avatar program is no issue (sofar, in July atm) Not even talking about overwatch creep, which is lame. But setting up nice ambushes (fair enough, with overwatch out of concealment, but that's kinda what the tutorial teaches you anyway) sometimes simply doesn't work because you can't reach a decent position with enough time left to actually finish it. It's a bit "not fish, not meat". On one hand people argue "yeah but you're a terrorist organization now, so it makes sense to put stuff on a timer". And then the game forces me to rush an (actually, almost every) attack instead of ambushing (like, what terrorists do). If you wanted to limit overwatch shennanigans (not that i see a problem with that in the first place, same with people who remove their timers - why would i give a shit or even complain about how others play the game?), give it charges. Which would've been totally fine by me. It just struck me as a very odd design choice. Imo, it's pretty much along the line of adding things for the sake of being able to say "yeah but xcom2 is totally different compared to EU/EW". Yes it is. Different =! better though. I never looked at EW missions and thought to myself "wouldn't it be awesome to have this and all other missions on a timer".

You have less aim when you overwatch and not in concealment (aim * 0,7) and against dashing target it adds up (aim * 0,7 * 0,7). A 70% shot would become a 34,3% aprox. That's why you need to flashbang the fuckers, because if not, they will get into melee as overwatch is not reliable against them, because they freaking dash to get into melee. m4ini, that's not true, i play on Legendary and i set up ambushes all the time (i like my snipers on high ground yes or yes). You need to be fast to set up the ambush of course, but that's not hard. Also, don't go full overwatch in ambushes, except if you have very very very good chances at killing the whole pod.

I'm not good when it comes to turn based strategy games. What now, am i not allowed to enjoy the game because of an idiotic design-decision that nobody asked for? Why not make it optional? Come on now. A sniper on high ground is btw not an ambush. An ambush is an ambush. As in, you get into a position in concealment, and wait for an enemy to spring the trap, instead of shooting first to "pull" the enemy into it. That certainly does work, most of the times anyway.

I can see why they added the timer tho. Especially with concealment added they want to limit people creeping at slow speed. But it is entirely possible the timer is to tight at certain difficulties. As I said I can understand people who don't like it and they can change it all they want, that's the advantage of a modable singleplayer game ![]()
