So, what is Xcom?

X-COM (sometimes stylized as X-Com) is a science fiction video game franchise featuring the titular fictional elite international organization tasked with countering alien invasions of Earth. The series began with the hit strategy video game UFO: Enemy Unknown created by Mythos Games and MicroProse in 1994. The original line up by MicroProse included six published and at least two cancelled games, as well as two novels. The X-COM series, in particular its original entry, achieved a sizable cult following and has also influenced many other video games; including creation of a number of clones, spiritual successors, and unofficial remakes.
A reboot series entitled XCOM was published by 2K Games, beginning with the strategy video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown, developed by Firaxis Games and released in 2012 to critical and commercial success, with two more games following in 2013. A sequel, XCOM 2, is scheduled for release in 2015.

XCOM2 announced!

“New York, NY – June 1, 2015 – 2K and Firaxis Games today announced that XCOM® 2, the sequel to the Game of the Year* award-winning strategy title XCOM®: Enemy Unknown, is currently in development for Windows-based PC. Developed by Firaxis Games, XCOM 2 transports players 20 years into the future, where humanity lost the war against the alien threat that has established a new world order. The secret paramilitary organization known as XCOM is largely forgotten, and must strike back to reclaim control of Earth and free mankind from the aliens’ rule. XCOM 2 is currently scheduled for release in November 2015. The game will also be coming to Mac and Linux via Feral Interactive.”

Some things that we know:
-PC exclusive, no console port.
-Extensive mod support!
-New classes
-Bradford is back!
-Snake ladies! ?
-CLOSE RANGE?!
-Teenage Sectoids
-Release is February 6

Looking forward to it? Can’t resist the hype? Can’t wait for the new source of dank memes? Want a taste of the Xcom world right now?
Play the old games! They still have a very large fan base and active players, XCOM enemy unknown has aged very well and if you already beat it, check out the long war mod! It’s like a free expansion that makes the game 5x better.

XCOM: Enemy unknown, enemy within

Original TL thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/games/344833-xcom-enemy-unknown
Enemy within is an expansion to enemy unknown, it adds new toys to fight the aliens with, removes a bunch of bugs and is generally awesome, a great expansion. You do NOT need to play EU before EW, EW is the same as EU + new features.

The Long War

"Takes XCOM to a new level." - Jake Solomon, XCOM lead designer, via Twitter
"This mod is the absolute best way to play XCOM" - Wired
"This is a collection of profound and surprisingly careful changes ... It's like a free expansion pack ... " - Rock, Paper, Shotgun
"Terrific ..." - Kokatu
"Turns XCOM: Enemy Within into nothing short of a serviceable turn-based military alien invasion strategy wargaming simulator." - Polygon
Named by PC Gamer one of the 15 most brutal mods of all time and in November 2014 was the site's Mod of the Week.

The long war is a MOD for XCOM: Enemy within made by a passionate group of modders. The mod adds a ton of features, rebalances the entire game, and corrects thousands of bugs from the base game. It increases the campaign length and difficulty. Best of all? It’s completely free and in constant tweaking and upgrading. The modders are very active, taking feedback from the community and updating the mod accordingly. Don’t worry about the stability of the mod, it works very well and even corrects numerous bugs and crashes from the original games.

The mod is in beta15 right now, with lots of awesome changes like bonus from your starting country, not just your continent and new voice packs and soldier nationalities!
It’s worth mentioning the outdated version of the mod, beta14 which works very well, doesn’t have all the new cool things from beta 15 but is considered a bit easier by the community.

Should you play XCOM: EU/EW before playing long war? Very encouraged, you don’t need to finish a campaign but it would be good to familiarize yourself with the game before jumping into the long war, it is difficult and the game doesn’t really hold your hand, it’s easy to get lost with the tons of stuff that you can do. If it’s too hard for your taste, you can personalize your experience by modifying the game .ini, it’s very easy to do and allows you to customize the difficulty level to something you have fun with.

Different, but if you are an old school, it's not better. They are very enjoyable tho.

They're a lot different. The rebooted X-com was designed to be a super easy but still permadeath style game where failure shockingly is an actual object. Its got a lot of features different from the original such as a smaller team limited actions instead of Time units and so on to modernize it. Xenoaunts was made from the start to be a spiritual successor to the original (imagine the original as baulders gate) and includes almost all of the original features but cleaned up a bit and changed slightly to please the base that kickstarted it. Xenoaunts was made without the knowledge that x-com was ever going to be made keep that in mind. I would recommend getting EW expansion it adds a ton to the game and it unlocks the best of the long war once you finish your first run.

TLDR: DA:I=x-com Pillars of eterinty=xenoaunts Whitcher 3=xcom-ew-Long war original x-com=baulders gate

You really should.
At first I didn't like it but its one of the few games i keep coming back to. Its got a certain intangible quality to it that's hard to describe, and the long war mod is just mindblowingly brutal :D

From what I've read I think theres going to be a lot more ADVENT soldiers milling around and the aliens are going to be more miniboss's instead of the meat and potatoes kind. Sectoids are going to be keeping their pistols but are going to be much stronger psionicaly. One ability they spoke about is resurrection of dead AVENT and xcom soldiers. Kinda like how sectoids made zombies (still have nightmares of trying to fight them with ballistic weapons). Those lizard things are going to be able to pluck your people out of cover and blind them up int he open for their allies to shoot to ribbons.

I think it's very unlikely that the viper's pull/bind will allow enemies to shoot at the incapacitated soldier. That would practically be an I win button for the aliens.

It probably works more like a ranged seeker strangle.

xcom 2 is appropriate, xcom was a reboot of the ufo games, they arent really successors.
They are smaller scale, smaller squads, 1 base etc.

Now xcom 2 is made for PC, which historically is more open to strategy games, so lets see.

urgs, guess xcom 2 will have more of those pick 1 out of 3 missions. But atleast it makes more sense now and they do it to increase replayability.
So while I dislike this path, they refined it alot. Basically everything seems bigger and better thanks to being on PC. And well this time you are the aliens without the better tech.

That looks awesomeeee, I'm guessing the green ish rooms are not "excavated" yet. It appears to have a lot more micromanagement to do, and i love the idea!

Looks super cool. Base micromanagement is something I'm awful at, but this looks like it'll be a lot more fun. The whole "choose 1 of 3" and panic systems didn't make a whole lot of sense in EU. However, in this game not being able to be everywhere is logical and it seems like there isn't an annoying "+1 panic" increase but a more active alien response, which will be more interesting to deal with
