Is playing as the Papal state interesing in any way? Seems like controlling the Curia would have some cool effects on the Catholic world at least, and the starting provinces have a nice powerbase.

I'm at 208% overextension... why the hell are these tiny Italian provinces so costly and full of basetax? I've gotten too used to conquering huge swathes of Arabia and Mongolia, I take a chunk out of Milan the size of Switzerland and my overextension doubles >

I've been really happy with how my ironman Game as Japan has gone so far. Manchu and Qi are now my vassals. I'm allied to Oirat and Buryatia.

Managed to unite Japan before 1500 without any major concerns when my Daimyo's declared war on me. And somewhere among all of this Ming imploded.
Then I proceed on beating up Korea and taking their lands.
Then the main thing I've been doing since has been eating up Jianzhou/Manchu bit by bit. Declared one war against them that I shouldn't, but didn't lose anything major aside from having to annul treaties with Oirat. Now they are my vassal, but I currently have -160 AE against them

It's fun, feels very similar to playing Tuscany or Milan. You get some extra stuff like being able to excommunicate (if controlling the Curia) and papal ideas are nice, but you can't form Italy. Forming the Kingdom of God is not worth it.


Oh yeah and no regency councils, whenever a pope dies you instantly get a new one.

Papal states is very interesting from what I remember. Not too big but not really small either, bordering the HRE but not in it and the natural way to expand is to take Italy which will cause some trouble with the emperor.

Best opening move for Papal State in my opinion:

Do everything to please Austria you possibly can. Then wait for a call to arms which will most likely come within a year, accept, and you will have relations high enough to join the HRE. While waiting for Austria you can try to take Urbino, if Urbino allies Aragon it will be hard, if just Hungary it's doable, ally Savoy/Milan/Venice and go for it.

Joining the HRE takes away half the fun... I prefer staying out of it and fighting the emperor.

No map yet. I missed this week and had a sub who did.... ok. Lost Provence and Dauphine to France and got bullied into giving up my Swiss provinces to Austria, but finished off the rest of the AI minors and formed Italy, took 2-3 provinces from Venice, retook Sicily from Mamluks, and started conquering Tunisia area. Overall I guess no complaints since he did better than the AI would have, but I had planned to sell my Swiss shit to Austria in exchange for help against France. O well.

Hansa was finally partitioned between brandenburg/austria/sweden. Mamluks lost several wars against Ottomans and now have formed a strong anti-Ottomans alliance with Persia and Venice. Burgundy formed Netherlands, which means France got all his French region provinces for free. Almost all of Europe has converted to reformed or protestant, leaving Portugal as the only remaining player Catholic, and ai Kongo (which converted to Catholicism through an event) as emperor, lol.

Trying to figure out what to do in this upcoming session. France approached me for a NAP, PLC approached me wanting to war Austria, and Spain wants to war France. Portugal also offered me colonies in exchange for selling them Salerno (which is a core of the pope from when they used to be my vassal) so that they can release the papal states and become curia controller. Thats the only deal I am sure to do, as Salerno is only 3 base tax and I can get a west african colony and go for the Mali gold mines.

Also trying to figure out where to go in terms of NIs. I went trade->offensive, and the sub took Economic as a 3rd idea set last session, but only has 1 idea in it so far. I'm 160% ahead of time in mil tech so plan to swap economic for a mil idea given I'm surrounded by a potentially hostile Austria and especially France. Quantity seems like it could be a no-brainer as it would massively increase the size of my army. Then follow that up with Economic 4th idea set and then probably quality 5th idea set? Economic is meh on its own but the policies are OP in combo with the rest of my ideas. Would let me run economic-quality (5% discipline), economic-offensive (20% arty combat ability) and economic-trade (+10% PE +10% TE) for 1 dip 1 admin 1 mil each month.

Thoughts?

i am about 80% sure that they changed it about a year ago and you dont get the stab hit anymore.

Why did the Netherlands' player translate Nieuw-Nederland to French? I'd declare war just to attempt to change the name.

@DrunkenOne: That's an interesting situation. You probably need to side with Austria or France and attack the other one. You already have a possible ally for each option. Can't help you with the ideas but military > anything else in multiplayer.

Doubt the Burgundian nobles would like their prime colony to be called after a land they mostly used to extract taxes from. If he was planning on forming the dutch nation he should have just called the colony Nieuw-Nederland in advance.


By the way how did you guys balance France and the Ottos? I've played MP with a couple of friends a while last summer, and France and to some extend the Ottos were so strong we decided to disallow people playing them. Both France and the Turks haven't grown much, did you guys form coalitions or so?

The people would be speaking French and thus using the French version of their colonies new name. This at least sort of makes sense. Like how Nieuw-Nederland was eventually surrounded by english colonies and then later just conquered, the colonists would still be Dutch and speaking Dutch, but also be a part of New England.

I'm not familiar with how much military idea stacking goes on in MP games but I can't think of a stronger military policy slate than the economic one. Religious w/ quantity + quality is also decent but religious is of questionable use in your case and bonuses are still worse (unless you're doing some ShiaPrussia morale stacking).

also, isn't aristocratic generally considered the strongest multiplayer MIL opener? They have the best bonuses for early game snowballing.
