I figure they'll look to SVG to provide expert analysis, while Simmons makes grand, questionable, and hopefully entertaining commentary.

Simmons is awesome. He probably doesn't put the effort into the analytical side he once did, but he's still entertaining to read.

Ouch, Melo ranked #17 in ESPN's player rankings.

A little bit high, but not unreasonable in my opinion as he was producing at about that level near the end of the season with Lin gone. The team has clearly been built around him, so there's no reason to suspect he doesn't continue to produce that way. His PF eligibility gives him a bit of a boost too.

Edit: It's also worth mentioning that the categories being used are going to affect things. I think ESPN typically follows an 8-cat, no-TO's format, which is not standard for Yahoo. If you ignore TO's, then Melo was ranked 19th over the last two months of last season.

Edit2: I'm an idiot and just realized you meant ESPN's real life rankings. Ignore above

So top 10 will be a mix of (not yet announced):

LBJ
Dwight
Wade
Paul
D Will
Kobe
Love
Durant
Westbrook
Rose

What order would you put those guys in from 1-10? D Will sticks out a bit in this group for me. As good as he is, I think he has a lot to prove this season if he truly is a top 10 franchise type guy. For what it's worth, here's my top 10:

1. LeBron
2. Durant
3. Dwight
4. Rose
5. Paul
6. Wade
7. Love
8. Kobe
9. D Will
10. Westbrook

I like your list with only minor tweaks:
1. LeBron
2. Durant
3. Dwight
4. Paul
5. Rose
6. Wade
7. Kobe
8. D Will
9. Love
10. Westbrook

I'm dropping Rose because of how well the team did even while he was out and due to us not knowing how he's going to recover from his injury. He could easily drop much further if he loses a lot of his explosive athleticism.

Upped Paul because of how he's been able to prop crappy teams in the past (Hornets) and the success the Clippers had with him in their first year together. He has the ball in his hands all the time, so you can't deny his influence on his teams' success.

Wade and Kobe are where they are because of how complete their games are, their mental and physical toughness, and their proven ability to lead a team at the highest levels of the game. Despite being the older members of this top 10, they still find ways to be very effective and continue to adapt.

I dropped Love because his defense is still suspect and we've yet to see if he's able to lead a team to any significant success (i.e. postseason). It's not totally fair to hold it against him since he hasn't had good teams around him, but I'm also reluctant to put him too high until he's proven he can be the best player on a team that can make it deep into the playoffs. For all we know, he could end up being a Pau-type who, while tremendously talented, needs to have a Kobe-type taking the lead to get far into the postseason.

DWill is questionable, but he has a great all-around game and has led several Utah teams to some playoff success as their best player.

Westbrook has had the success at the highest levels as a major cog, but he's still not quite there as a leader or the type of player who makes his teammates better.

I think Rose is towards the back end of the top 10, and arguably could be out of it. I think this last year really solidified the fact that he's just an All-Star level player with no big impact on his team's chances to win the way CP3/Lebron/Wade/Kobe/Durant are.

Love should be closer to the top 5, and definitely above Rose and even Kobe at this point.

Dwight is more and more for me becoming below the tier of "if we drafted today who would be a lottery pick" status. I think fans and even analysts underestimate coaching and how much Stan Van Gundy is responsible for the defense, which Dwight gets major credit for. I've stated in the past that his defense really has no effect on top tier perimeter players like LeBron/Wade/Kobe/Durant and in this era I think that matters BIG time. He isn't KG level defensively (versatility wise) but people keep saying he is a 2nd or 3rd best player in the league due to scarcity which I think isn't a good way to evaluate players. If that's the case Kobe and Wade should be bumped even higher since high usage, good efficiency do it all SGs are the rarest commodity in NBA history. I also have a HUGE problem with Dwight being ranked anywhere near the top 5 when thinking in terms of dominance. He hasn't had 1 season, not ONE - where he's approached the levels of straight up dominance any of the aforementioned future HOFs have, nor has he had a season of comparable monstrous destruction of other recent bigs, most notably the Duncan/Garnett/Dirk triumvirate or even a Shaq level (I know that's asking a lot). Just the more and more I think about Dwight and his playoff and RS performances I don't see him as a once in a generation talent.

Top 5 should be imo Lebron, Wade, CP3, Durant, Love, Kobe, Dwight, Westbrook, D-Will, Rose.

This takes into account recent performance too which is why injured guys like D-Will and Rose go to the back end of the pack.

The biggest travesty is Blake Griffin being ahead of Pau Gasol (and to a lesser extent Bosh).

As for top 10: Lebron, Durant, CP3, Dwight, Wade, Kobe, Love, D. Will, Rose, Westbrook

He should be behind Pau and, yeah, probably Bosh, but who cares about 2 or 3 spots?

Yeah I think Blake's been put in there based on his potential/future rather than where he really lies as of now. It betrays what the list stands for but Dirk was #11 and I'd still say he's still ahead of K-Love as the game's best PF. Lists like these are never perfect.

Dunno how you can first criticize Rose's impact on his team's chances to win and then praise KLove one sentence later. If ur criticism is true for Rose it's double that for Love.

The T-wolves would be trash without Love, probably a 20 win team. The Bulls were still the #1 seed in the east playing without Rose.

Well it's worth arguing that the Bulls made the Conf Finals with Rose and bombed out in the first round without him.

Some may point to Noah being out, but would they have beaten Philly with Noah playing? I doubt it.

Rose has a pretty monumental effect on the Bulls offensively.

Everyone is keen to praise CP3 consistently (and rightly so) but it's worth noting Rose has taken his team deeper into the Playoffs in just four seasons than CP3 has in his 7 years in the NBA (since we're on the topic of how a player impacts his team winning).

Rose has his deficiencies as a player but he's worthy of superstar status in the game. Only thing that can hold him back is his injuries.

ESPN 10-6:

10. D-Will
9. Westbrook (too high IMO. I think it's a travesty he's ahead of someone like Dirk)
8. Wade
7. K-Love
6. Kobe

ESPN's all-NBA team would be:

PG: CP3 (I can't imagine Rose would be ahead of him with the top 5 yet to be announced)
SG: Kobe
SF: LBJ
PF: K-Love
C: Howard

I'd have Dirk over K-Love and Kobe/Wade is a toss-up. A pretty strong team all round.

Second team:

PG: Rose
SG: Wade
SF: Durant
PF: Dirk
C: Bynum

Which team would win a game between those two?
