edit: he was also linked to Phoenix, BOS is definitely a major player in this though imo (more than Lakers). If anything I am all for him getting the most money where he would have the most playing time. It is what his agent should be telling him at this point in his career and what I would do if I were him.

(boston needs to aquire JET through a s&t to go back after mayo). if he can get paid and still be on a contender, I don't see him taking less money for a nominal increase in chances. A contender that didn't even offer him the qualifying! That's just rude - there's no way he's going to stay. No contender is going to have the money to give him what he would have gotten on the QO (about seven and a half, I think.) So Mid-Level is the best he'll get on a contender. Mini-Mid from a serious contender. Otherwise just sign a 4 year, 31 million deal with Phoenix.

With fields they lost a slasher and their primary wing defender and Jeffries was pretty good for the intangibles. I understand that they don't want to overpay Lin and Fields but they aren't even close to being a contender like this. People keep forgetting how awful the Knicks were without Linsanity last year. We all know that Felton is actually a really good player. Felton playing badly last year just means Knicks get him really cheap. Stock market-like: when a stock's price drops, the common man wants to sell, the rich man wants to buy. Lin was very very good last year, but not worth thirty million on the books, in three years, I think? Plus, most of that winning, I swear to God, was because Amare was injured. Fields is also great, and I think worth the 7mil a year, but only WP among the stats agrees with that sentiment. They backed off maybe because his Sophomore slump was relatively slump-ier than most players. Jeffries sucks. Kurt + Camby are cheap big men. Who love NY. Being big men, they have multiple effective seasons left in their tanks. And them playing means less Amare. God I hope they trade Amare, or that he starts playing at least average. Maybe Kidd will turn Amare back into a monster, who knows.

Felton was only ever good under Mike D'Antoni, under another PG dominated offense he sucked. He is fine in transition, and plays fine PnR, but he isn't stellar in either location, and in a half court offense he is slow, and often makes the incorrect decision, or misses his window of opportunity. And Lin is worth 30 million in jersey and ticket sales alone, never mind the fact he will probably be close to voted into the all star game from Chinese fans. If you think Lin is expensive for 25 million, Felton for 7.5 million (near the same price) is not worth it.

However, there are no guarantees that his off-court value stays so high, particularly if he regresses to the mean and becomes a very average player next season. He pulled in a lot of casual fans during Linsanity, but those will be the first fans to leave once they get bored of him. If he doesn't perform to expectations, then NY will have to pay a lot of salary and luxury tax for someone who could end up being no better than a backup PG. The fact that the Knicks are so committed to Melo and Amare only makes it riskier because they are virtually guaranteed to prevent Lin from realizing his full potential simply due to how they play (iso-heavy and ball-dominating). Personally, I think Houston pulled off a brilliant move by making it so hard for the Knicks to match. Lin will likely be worth the money he'll be getting paid by the Rockets due to the large Chinese population there, and their lack of any other star player to take the ball out of his hands. Even if Houstin ends up landing D12 or Bynum, they're close to the perfect type of players to pair up with a guy like Lin. They can afford the gamble because both the on-court and off-court circumstances make their worst case scenario a lot more palatable. I hope Lin ends up in Houston because I think his humble manner will suit the organization better, the fans will embrace him and stay loyal to him (unlike fickle NY fans), and he'll be more likely to reach his full potential on that roster than while playing next to Melo and Amare.
