Even last year--his worst season efficiency wise (depending on the metric you use--I go with TS%)--he was still just 0.1% below league average. For a guy of his stature you'd like him to be above average though so you could make an argument there. But in the years he won chips, he was a pretty efficient scorer. Not LBJ amazing, but pretty good for a guy who gets the defensive attention Kobe does. Based on last year, Melo (and Kobe!) need to really up their shot selection. Both teams have made moves that can hopefully facilitate this, but I'd back Kobe and the Lakers to be far more effective next year than the Knicks. The Knicks will improve purely on their depth alone but I'm as yet convinced the Melo/Amare combo will start miraculously working. At his age, Kidd just isn't that good

It's the same reason you'll see a marked improvement in the Warriors' D next year with the addition of Bogut. If you can have just one really good wing defender and a really good defender at the 5 it makes a huge difference to your D. That or you can go the Miami route and just stack your perimeter with 3/4 really good wing defenders. I think it's easier just to get a good 5 though.

People would be surprised they were ranked 5th in defensive efficiency last season (only Chicago, Philly, Boston and Miami were ahead of them). Especially if that big man can even do a half decent job of defending Pick N Rolls to the rim when he is switched on to the ball handler. All those top defensive teams have some combination of loaded wing defenders and pick n roll killers that just grind offenses to a pulp.

How do you not lottery protect that pick?? The move he gets the most acclaim for, i.e. getting CP3, is tarnished by him getting browbeat into including EJ in the trade. In fairness to Olshey, Stern would have vetoed the CP3 trade 99% without EJ. I think he would've let CP3 walk than look to be playing favourites or being "unfair". When you get a chance to get a superstar level talent I think you have to make everyone and anyone available to get them (unless it's comparable superstar talent). The two important assets of the trade we EJ and the Minny pick (#10--Austin Rivers). If I were a Clippers fan I'd be happy with the deal they sent to NOLA for CP3. It would've been great to keep EJ, but I wouldn't baulk on losing CP3 because I didn't want to give up EJ.
