For the PC. One of those sim games where you manage a hospital. Very fun though and can be pretty intense.

No AI, get a group of friends together and try it, you'll be amazed how far much more fun this simple game is than most multiplayer games out there.

Not sure how many people know this game, but it is awesome and it has really nice combat mechanics and a competent main character that is so rare in jrpg.

Dragon Warrior Monsters: Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: I was so lucky to discover these games in my childhood. Very seriously some of the best Square-based RPGs ever made still today. What makes it so special is it's pioneering in monster capture and breeding systems, and furthermore a very nice battle system (The sound effects aren't bad either ;p). I would recommend these games to anyone who enjoyed Pokemon, or enjoys Final-Fantasy-style Game Boy games.

+ Show Spoiler + Hipster game of the year to be sure, but I loved SuperGreatFriend's LP of it. This probably isn't really 'hidden' either, but it's better than listing a game which only has nostalgic value.

One one of my favorite games of all time, makes a good case for games having the potential to be art. http://store.steampowered.com/app/37000 Oh my god, this, a million times this. For another great time, check out the studio's previous game, Pathologic. It's nearly impossible to play due to extreme bugginess and a horrific translation, but if you can make it past that there's nothing else like it. Here's a good write-up about it: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/04/10/butchering-pathologic-part-1-the-body/

One of the best RPGs i've ever played, up there with the likes of Final Fantasy. I'd strongly recommend it to anyone liking RPGs with turnbased combat. Has an awesome dark atmosphere(Though the sequel is the exact opposite), an amazing soundtrack and fun combat. I've got triple digit hours of entertainment out of the game and would strongly recommend it. If you enjoy this you'll also enjoy it's sequel, Shadow Hearts: From the New World.

Even though this is a game that Europeans might be familiar with, it didn't come out in America and is thus largely unrecognized:
