Why does a hidden gems thread contain some of the most famous and critically acclaimed games of all time? Like with anything else there are going to be some people who haven't heard of _____, but there is no sense in which a game like Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger is obscure enough to warrant inclusion in a list like this. In the case of the latter there was even a spotlighted blog post on this exact website, what, a week ago? And it's been rereleased how many times?

I'm trying to remain impartial to games that people mention, I agree with your points. never played either chrono or mana, but I heard of them before...and after looking up that they were some of the best selling games of the time, which explains why I know of them well.
Removed from the list, thank you for the input.
it was suggested at least twice and I thought to myself, man, is this really unknown...? am I just crazy? Nope, I'm always right of course =P ...at least this time
I SO agree with the world ends with you (NDS RPG). I'm glad it's on the list. For how GOOD, INNOVATIVE, and everything else about it is, I'm amazed they have only sold so few copies. Perhaps they should have poured more money on the advertising; it is a new franchise/universe after all, not like a FF game where they only have like 1 15 second advertisement on TV and be done with it xD
A fun as hell 3rd person shooter for current-gen. Very short, but awesome with great graphics and tight gameplay.
I don't know if it's a "hidden gem", but I know that no one ever talks about it. It like, came out, and some people lost their shit over it, and then no one talked about it again after a month or two. It's really, really great, though.
Chrono Trigger was never released in my country, had to use those adapter things for your snes where you stuck in the foreign version of the game and a random local game, so it was pretty obscure here. However, the sequel on ps1, chrono cross, I'm guessing not as many people are familiar with, which is a shame because any fan of chrono trigger or squaresoft games in general needs to play it.
Fucking classic. Oh god the nostalgia is killing me. This is the ultimate co op platformer. How cool is it to transform into raging beasts lol. My favorite is definitely the wolf. >>>>>> <<<<< >>>>>> <<<<<< haha.
I cant remember the name for this. Actually it was in japanese when i played so i dont even know the name. You fly around or something and during fights, you use these cards to do attacks. Special cards can make you do fireballs or combo attacks and shit. Man goku was the boss in this game. When all your dudes like yamcha are failing hardcore, goku comes to rape nappa and vegeta.
Before there was stupid 3d DBZ fighting games on playstation, there was this. This game is so fucking awesome. You charge up to get ki, then you can fire kamehameha or shoot the small pea shots. Then there are basic moves and even some super special moves that goes into a long combo ending with a crash through a mountain. Trunks/goten were so imba cus they were so small ;;; Nothing would hit them lol. Butouden 1 and 3 were also cool but this one takes the cake imo.
This game has a special meaning to me. But regardless of that I remember enjoying it alot. There was like 3 or 5 different kingdoms with their own heros and units. You are going for domination or something. You field units and move around the board and when u attack the enemy, it goes into a 3d animation (its fucking ugly by today's standards).

This is an interesting point, as I'm trying to keep the list impartial and fair, I'll look into it, though...aren't a TON of games not sent to Australia? due to laws etc/shipping?
Lords of Magic is absolutely sick. It is one of my favourite games and is simply an amazing game.
8 fully unique factions with unique racial attributes, unique set of units (a few cross over) which include infantry, cavalry, ranged, scouts, magical and legendary as well as a whole set of unique spells and hero/leader units.
Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Life, Death, Chaos and Order. Whenever I go to start a new game I just have spend time thinking about who I want to be and what hero leader to start with (like a HoMM game).
Here's some of the sick music to hook you in:
The game is actually amazing. In an army you can field up to 9 slots of whatever you choose as well as one hero to lead each three, them being Warrior, Thief or Mage.
Thieves can stealth in the overlay map as well as in battle and if you find an enemy leader unit, you can actually stealth up and subdue them and they then become a prisoner - to which you can interrogate, tortue, execute or use to trade.
This is one of my favourite games because it just encompasses so many cool things. All units grow in level where champions max out at level 10-15 and normal troops go up to level 6 I think. You can leave leader units in the three buildings which you recruit from and they add experience per turn to it, so a high level warrior will allow for high level warriors and melee units to come out at higher levels right off the bat. You can upgrade each building to allow for faster experience gains and when you upgrade the mage tower it also upgrades the little building beside it which is a library. In order to learn new spells, a mage can occupy a library and choose to study from one of four tomes of spells. Higher levels learn faster and upgrading the mage tower allows for more mages to learn at once, which again makes it faster. Leader units can also wield a huge variety of artifacts. Two slots per hero.
Pretty much for whole fucking game is awesome and has some of the best quotes.
You can fully parley and negotiate with the other races, trade everything from resources to units and spells and form alliances. Turn based map mode with real time combat which you can pause at any time.
Find a full free legal download of the game in the download section at http://mantera.xorgate.com/website.html as well as to download the GS5 mod, updated two days ago.
This game is 14 years old but you know if people are still playing it and modding it then it is fucking good.
I agree! Modding it??? are there any communities? My only complaint is that playing multiplayer is an inconvenience (though at least it's possible) but it seems like it could be polished more. There are some big bugs such as in multi, if you have an AI in battle they might freeze up (i don't remember the specifics, I think if like you're deciding whether or not to advance to the next level of a cave, the AI will take forever to think AKA not think at all and just freeze). Also I kept losing my save data lol. I kept having to use cheats to beat the campaign so that I could use the Death faction again. After a period of time ( a few months? ) if I come back, sometimes suddenly it says i have not beat the game lol so i have to do that cheat where you spawn dragons, and then keep doing that, and keep spawning more dragons in 1 troop then splitting up new dragons so that I could move infinite in 1 turn until I finally find the where the Death people are rofl.
Anyways, GREAT game I wish there was a sequel. You're right, it's very memorable. The music was fantastic, the strategy was great. It was such a good game.
Wtf lol I check IGN they didn't even review this game wow lol. Also the MSRP was ONLY $14.99??? I remember buying it at the store cus it was cheap. I'm SO glad we picked it up. Cus usually we don't buy games (bro pirated them... but hey I was very little and he wasn't so I didn't quite understand lol, please don't hate on me!).
Also, it's rated E? that's unexpected o.o I guess there really isn't anything too violent though, all the violence (arrows getting stuck at people and stuff) is like off-screen or you don't actually see them getting stabbed and whatnot.
Not sure how many people know this game, but it is awesome and it has really nice combat mechanics and a competent main character that is so rare in jrpg.
Radiant Historia needs more love. It's still my favorite game of the year despite coming out in January and me playing lots of great games since. I grew up in the 90's playing JRPGs, and Radiant Historia is probably my favorite since Chrono Trigger. Engrossing story, memorable characters, skillful battle system: it's a sharp contrast to all the other crap games released in the genre in the last 10 years. The ending is so good I cried. The game's only weakness is that after a good hook at the start, it really drags for about 10 hours (a bare bones walkthrough is probably a good idea to avoid boring repetition, honestly). Total playtime is about 40 hours with no walkthrough, but closer to 20 with one.
This thread is also filled with very well-known games. Just because it came out before you were born doesn't mean it's hidden. I mean, Altered Beast? C'mon, that one came with the Genesis! You may as well add Super Mario Bros.
I do have to second Landstalker though. That was a great game on the Genesis that virtually no one heard of even when it was new.
RPG for the Gamecube. Hidden gem for me, at least. No one I know has played this/know what it is. RPG with a lot of depth that challenged not just mechanical skill in fights, but had various puzzles/mazes that required some thinking (to the mind of my 11 year old self, yes.) Very good story line too, with personality depth of characters that could have come out of a novel. Maybe i'm romanticizing the game because it was a big part of my childhood, but I feel it was damn good at least.
This was the game that popped my all-nighter cherry, and the first I played more that 20hrs straight.
Glad to see Blaster Master, Mischief Makers, and Monster Rancher (2) on the list as well. And especially The World Ends With You. I think Kirby needs some more lovin' though:
Kirby Super Star:
-- Action/Platformer -- Quite a few adventures with several ways to play the game. -- Known as "Kirby Super Star ULTRA" on the DS with some extras. -- It's fucking Kirby, dawg.
Kirby's Avalanche:
-- Puzzle -- The first good Tetris-esque puzzle battle game (besides Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine for SEGA Genesis). -- Paves the way for similar games, such as the wonderful Pokemon Puzzle League.

Brigandine is already on the list under PS1 <3<3<3
Will be adding another update to add a few of the previous games I didn't get the chance to at the time.
yea thats it haha. The sequels follow the same gameplay and are great also.
I dont know how hidden this one is but its among the best arcade side scrollers along with D&D Shadow over Mysteria, The Simpsons, X-men, Knights of the Round, and Captain America and the Avengers.
Aliens Vs. Predator
There are 2 predators and 2 humans to choose from. You can play 4 players. Predators are imba with their shoulder cannon but the humans have their own quirky playstyle.
;; actually it looks like 3 player is max from the pic haha.
I played the shit out of this game when I was stuck with no internet for like a month at my dad's house when I was 13. It's ridiculously long, but it was the first tactical rpg I had ever played so, I guess I have a bias towards it.
I got about 70 hours in before I stopped and from what I could tell in the story there was no end in sight. They claim it's over 150 hours long, and I don't doubt it. Still, pretty fucking fun to at least try out and play for a little while.
Not sure if this qualifies as a 'Hidden Gem', considering I don't know its popularity.
Made by the person who made 'Give Up, Robot' for Adult Swim, it is a Platformer but not quite the same. It is an entire game world rather than levels 1-40, which makes it that much better. What stops you from getting to new areas are the tons and tons of upgrades. I just replayed through it for the 2nd time and a 100% clear took well over 7 hours, and not 7 hours of failing on the same room 100 times, 7 hours of content in general. Great game, a little backstory if you are into that kinda stuff as well. People say CaveStory is the best indie game of all time, I say this trumps it (considering I didn't finish CaveStory and I have finished this twice ).Download here:
I've heard this game was successful, but I've never met another person who's played it in person. Sort of a simple flight simulator/ dog-fighting game, but with elements typically not found in those genres of games. There is a storyline and if I remember correctly, your successes and decisions lightly affect later stages of the game. I also enjoyed how customizable your ship is. For a game made in 1998, it was pretty ahead of its time.
