I have to agree with this. It has a pretty unique combat system that's very fun. The main character is badass in a competent way, unlike the whiny emo retards with overly large swords that infest most jrpgs.

Also, if people are including classics like Dune II and Planescape:Torment, you might as well include X-Com: UFO Defense. That's one of the very best games ever.

Just got my copy last week, it's a lot of fun. I wish I had another player to play against though.

And to round off my Genesis list with a 3rd:

Fantastic RPG, better than the SNES version in my opinion.

Brandish has camera controls that take some serious getting used to. But once you get the hang of it, it's a great adventure game with some fun and challenging bosses to beat along the way.

And some may not call it obscure, but it's certainly one of the more difficult games to find for the SNES, and one of the best:

Great strategy game for the system. To be honest, I have so many games that I wasn't able to spend a lot of time on this one after I bought it. But the time I DID spend on it was fantastic.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but holy shit I can never get over how fucking good this game is. Gameplay, story, music, visuals, characters, battles... it's just got it all. This is one of those games where, if you have a DS, buy it. Might not even be a "hidden gem", but so many people brush it off as another JRPG. Nope.

Best played with a friend, Goof Troop is an action/adventure game that requires a fair bit of teamwork iirc. Loved it as a kid

[Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles]
Also best played with (3) friends, if you can find all the gameboys and cables... Intense multiplayer with shouting and screaming "ohmygodI'mdying HEAL ME!". spells and attacks can be combined by stacking targetting reticles and that's a lot of fun too. I want a true sequel so bad... DS's would make things so easy.

[Custom Robo]
Actually a super fun action game where you customize your robo's parts, weapons and abilities before doing arcade-style battles. Multiplayer, too.
