I rented it about six times and finally bought it when I found it at the age of 15. Upon researching it, the one that came to the US was actually the second game, but they never released the first one in the west. It was also the lead-in project for the company that went on to make Gran Turismo, which is evidenced by beating this game on the hardest difficulty, thus unlocking a stage where you use a stock car or indy car. Not just this game, but the whole series. It's an action/shooter game: Sample of arena play in Armored Core 3: Silent Line (my favorite iterations are Armored Core 3 and Armored Core: Silent Line) I think the fifth one is coming out for PS3 and 360 fairly soon. By fifth I mean Armored Core 5, even though there are 13 games on official platforms and a couple for phones in Japan. The stories are all fairly immersive and there is an overall timeline, the missions can take anywhere from 2 minutes to 40 minutes.

AMAZING game, if you like puzzles very zelda like you should try this ASAP, I would say it's even better than the original zelda, at least just as good. Not as good as the first one, but I still finished it and had a good time thinking the puzzles through! PD. First one is Zelda like, 2nd one is complete 3D

PlayStation and PC. File under Action/Adventure. This game was a gem, so fun to play back in the day and was quite infamous. Not many people cared for it, but those who did wanted a remake for a very long time. That's how good it was. I miss this game so much.

Wii: Xenoblade Chronicles, RPG I am not sure about its popularity in Japan and Europe but it wasn't released in NA because Nintendo though it wouldn't sell much. I had to import it from UK and mod my Wii to play it. This game will give you easily 120+ hours of gameplay with all the sidequests. Just finished Xenoblade couple days ago, amazing game, loved the story and the big ass world. the only problem was that it was way too easy to kill the last boss!, I just grinded up to level 88 in 3-4 hours after reaching the last dungeon and breezed through it, after I finished the game I didn't have any incentive to finish up the last and best sidequests

Just a little bit about the story, the main characters and everyone in the world have no idea what's behind a great wall that's supposedly the edge of the world, after traveling a lot they get to the Wall and you wouldn't know what they find!, very entertaining RPG

Katamani Such an amazing fun/weird game, I actually went out to buy the PSP and PS3 version after they were released. It's quite cool that without adding too much to the gameplay, a simple stage design+collections+art filter makes the game feel so much more different and funny

Here are a few that come to mind. I checked in the OP to see if they were mentionned but I didn't read all the page so I apologize if they were! Saturn (so many hidden gems there! very underrated platform): Amazing game. An RPG with a truly original gameplay, with some shoot them up elements. Very immersive and original universe too, I highly recommend it and I don't think it got old. It's fairly short for an RPG, so you don't have to commit your entire life to it. Might be hard to find though. My favourite tactical RPG, great gameplay, plot and soundtrack. It didn't get too old either, so if you can find it go ahead! The only problem is that episode 2 and 3 were never translated from japanese... Great and original action game in which you're a futuristic fireman fighting fire! Doesn't sound exciting, but trust me it is. You must try it if you find it. The intro is a classic of cheesy japanese anime :p Great survival horror game, scared the shit out of me when I was a kid! Dead Space probably owes this game a lot, just replace the spaceship by a submarine. The game is a bit too talkative and easy though.

Awesome game similar in style to Zelda. Good dungeons, possibly the best lead female character in a game ever, good story. Just get it. And to whoever said Shadow of the Colossus, YES. Amazing game.

One one of my favorite games of all time, makes a good case for games having the potential to be art. http://store.steampowered.com/app/37000 Yep, this game is amazing. Was recommended to me by a friend, and I don't regret it at all. Killer7. Amazingly artistic and a complete mind-fuck. I see it on the top of lists from time to time, but I don't think enough people have actually looked into it. It's definitely one of the best Gamecube games, but it was ported to other systems as well.

+ Show Spoiler + This action/rpg for the NES will stick with me forever, being my favourite game and all. I seem to come back to playing it at least one playthrough when I start it. Two high school dudes going around beating up other high school gangs to rescue a girlfriend. Course there's more to it but I think the gameplay, humourous quotes and animations speaks for itself. I know there's been a "remixed" version for the GBA and I think there was a port to the Wii but nothing beats the original game on the NES. Also, Castle Crashers' character design was inspired by this game.
