Fighting is only part of the NHL's game, not the rest of the world's game, and give me one good reason that it should be a legitimate part of the game besides "It makes money". That has and always will be a force that degrades and devalues any and every type of art/sport.

I'm starting to think you don't watch hockey year round. Really now? How the heck you think Canadians play the game and why other countries look to our model and systems? It's a winning formula.

"Making money?" It's always been apart of the game and yes we enjoy violence. Why do you think the ratings have been so high? Degrades the game?

lmao

That's fresh.

Canadians are part of the NHL.

Other countries do not model our penalty system when they straight up eject and suspend players for starting fights. And please, try to claim that ratings are so high just because people start fights in the NHL. That's a complete joke and you know it. Fighting just detracts from the players actually playing hockey and brings no real benefit to the game.
A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else.

The thing is it happens. Whether it's intended or not.

Heads up.

Stay alert; stay safe.

I get it. Your mad that the Sedin's got targeted. Yet the problem with your Canucks is simply the following: they aren't manning up and answering the bell. Instead of talking and whining about it. Bieska and your other big boys have to step in. Not just chirp. You see what happened in the Sens/Rangers series? You send the message loud and clear that you won't tolerate it. Not just the refs sometimes the players have to take matters into their own hands.

The culture in the Canuck dressing room has to change or else cue the music & Haiku:

Here a little slice, there a little cut. Chirpy little devils don't know when to keep their mouths shut. Take it like a champ; win the Stanley Cup. Hey, hey, hey that’s what playoff hockey is all about!

No it isn't. We get HNIC over here and it was mentioned on the tele:

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2012/04/nhl-playoffs-start-with-strong-tv-ratings/1#.T449fdVrXDo

Sorry bud, but your just spewing nonsense nonstop. One of the reasons the ratings are doing so well is because people want to see must-see hockey. Human beings are hotwired to get pleasure and enjoyment out of violence. You can try to suppress it all you want but it's human nature. We gravitate to such things. It's only one variable.

A lot of the top Europeans come to the QMJHL, OHL, WHL, etc. You should know those divisions as that's where most of the hockey players that get drafted from.

The media coverage is mostly drivel. They can try to kibosh the league all they want. You cannot take fighting out of the game. It will always be there. Just like the hits. If it isn't the head as we've seen. They'll just go for the next best thing: knees and legs.

Hockey was never for the light-hearted and these guys know what they have to go through in order to win it all.

Take your bumps and bruises. Might lose a few teeth while you're at it too. The grit has to come from somewhere and you have to protect your own players.

Wow the Red Wings are awful. All three of those goals were basically scored by themselves. Time to get a new coach in there?

Also way to go Raffi Tores, making matt cook look like daniel sedin out there.

And these are all skill players. Sedins don't fight because it would be retarded for them to sit out. And all the fights after hits are retarded and unnecessary if the refs would just do their job, like how they really dropped the ball not kicking Neal out after the first hit in the flyers-pens game the other day.

Did I say the Sedins have to fight? lmao Other guys have to step up for them.

No man. The Canucks haven't been answering the bell at all. All they've done this series against the Kings is get in their face and chirp.

Last game what did they do after the other one went down? They didn't even open the door for the poor sap, lmao. There was no response from ANYONE.

Fight fire with fire.

I remember Sundin fighting once or twice in his entire career. You know why? Because Domi or some other guy like Roberts was always there to nip it in the butt from the get go.

In other words, NOT IN OUR HOUSE.

Bruins do this very well. They don't back down from any fight and if you're in front of their net you will pay for it. Even as the whistle blows.

Don Cherry...is that you? Either way, I agree with you that fighting has its place but it's gone too far now because of referee incompetence. And I assume the Canucks organization probably thought the refs would do their jobs but guess they got taken for saps by the zebras. Still, the answer to a flying elbow isn't a fight, it's a long suspension from Shanahan.

The first ten minutes of a hockey game should tell you exactly how the refs are going to call it. When there's all sorts of other shit going on you cannot always rely on the refs either especially behind the play.

Like I said, take matters into your own hands and this isn't Don Cherry. It's common practice.

So what you're saying is that refs will always be retardedly inconsistent and as such players should resort to vigilante justice? Man, and people are wondering why hockey isn't going mainstream

It's true, you need players that are willing to protect skilled players if you plan on being a consistent team. You can play dirty and on the edge without trying to injure. A player that can agitate and still make plays is irreplaceable in the playoffs.

I think hockey isn't going mainstream because it's too difficult to actually play. You either need an ice-rink around, goodluck getting icetime, or somewhere to play roller hockey. You also need to pay an arm and a leg for decent equipment where others sports require a ball and an open field.

Do you honestly think something like disciplinary inconsistencies stop a new person from tuning in and watching an NHL game or going out and playing hockey? That's something that you wouldn't notice if you were new to the sport.

Mainstream? It would never be mainstream in the US regardless man, lmao. Sorry Gary Bettman but all those expansion teams weren't a good idea.

No man. Refs have always missed calls. ALWAYS. They're doing their best with all the shit going down.

The Leafs would have been in the playoffs a few years back if it weren't for Kerry's missed calls against the Islanders, but you know what? That's hockey.

I'd like to see you do a better job refing some of these games. In the playoffs the refs are used to letting things slide to let the teams decide it, but with all the shit going down. We're seeing them tighten things up more.

Anyway, blaming the refs will get you nowhere. The Vancouver Canucks should know that by now. You have to play your game and stand-up for your star players.

The ref's set the bar, and if the bar is set too low, than the team has to resort to some sort of action to make sure that the skilled players are unhurt and can do their job.

Example is Karlsson got bullied by Boyle, they both go off. Really only Boyle should had come off. Next game, Carkner attempts to fight Boyle, Boyle declines, Carkner fights him anyways.

Regardless if you think the actions were right or wrong, the Sens felt that the refs were not doing their job, so Carkner went in and settles it. Look at Game 3 of the Sens Rangers game. Good, clean hockey game.

I think the issue is this. A long time ago, it was only vigilante system. However, everyone knew about it. If you do something to our skilled player, pain is coming to you. Then the system went to ref only. Where everything was cut down and the ref's controlled the game. I think the system right now is a little bit of both, so players aren't sure what to do.

I think wunsun hit the nail on the head with what's wrong this year in my opinion. We had Shanahan open the season with his banhammer which started getting some people talking, so he relaxes the banhammer. And then we get Lucic's awesome incident with Miller, and the GMs start making noise. But then they start calling damn near nothing so now we've got the refs going all over the place and no one has a clue what's going to be called and subsequently some people think they can get away with murder, and a lot of the time this season do, and this is continuing through the playoffs which is a shame.

Anyways, I think Gillis did a decent job building the team with toughness but everyone is just off their game for the last month or two asides from the goalies. For example, last year Edler was a force of nature but now he's just coughing up pucks and blowing coverage, and we've got Kesler who's regressed like hell maybe due to last year's injury. Plus we're a Sedin down :<

Backstrom - 1 game
Also a joke. Give him at least 4 games. It's the exact same thing as Asham except this time he does make contact with the head but doesn't punch him. Thank god the crosscheck hit Peverley's visor otherwise he'd be a mouth-breather for a few months.

LOL, really?? As Backstrom approaches Peverly immeadiately puts his stick up right near Backstrom's head like he is going to highstick him in the face before Backstrom has done anything. This comes after 3 games of the Bruins taking shots at Backstrom's head whenever they can. If Backstrom doesn't recieve the match penalty he likely doesnt even get fined.

Edit - I can agree with this though:
This Wheel of Justice website looks more and more like the real thing... I can't wait to see what happens to Torres. Probably "a good hockey play".

You can't compare the fighting in today's game with the fighting in the game that 'people grew up with'. Fighting in the 80s was a useful tool for protecting skilled players from being targeted. You want to run Gretzky? Cool, but that means Semenko is going to be collecting your teeth. It was a deterrent to some of the tangential crap that has no business in the game other than to spoil it.

The same cannot be said for today's version of fighting. Because of the way the rules work, fighting no longer works as a deterrent because you can't take an instigator penalty. So fighting servers no useful purpose - it's just a distraction. The only guys doing it on a regular basis are useless hockey players who have no other contributing skill other than the ability to wrestle with an equally useless hockey player for a few minutes before falling to the ice. It accomplishes nothing. If fighting had a purpose, a guy like Matt Cooke would be getting beat up a lot more.

It's funny that we're talking about this on a StarCraft website given that people are always talking about "growing ESPORTS" or "ruining ESPORTS." I'm a guy who is interested in growing the game of hockey and I worry about how all of this unprofessional conduct makes the sport look to its potential audience. If I didn't grow up with it, it'd look like a joke to me. You don't see this shit in anything else that dares call itself professional. At the very least, they should do what the WWE did and brand it as an 'entertainment' sport as to stop the confusion =P.

How many people here find that the most entertaining hockey played each year is the IIHF U20 tournament after Christmas? When you watch it, how much time do you spend missing fighting?
