I'm gonna steal a good post off of another site I visit because I think it's worthy of discussion as these playoffs are quickly turning into a joke:

The playoffs may have reached a tipping point. I love the speed, the intensity, and the hitting. I also don’t mind the fighting. I hate, however, the cheap shots, the attempts to injure, and the bullying/intimidating after the whistle. Most of all, I hate the capriciousness of the decisions. I want the best players and team to have the best chance to win but refusing to interfere in the game means that the best cheaters win. It sullies the competition.

The NHL needs to own this since it is their fault. It’s pretty simple. The referees and the NHL are unwilling to enforce the rules which necessarily and inherently leads to frontier justice. This stems from last season when the Bruins were allowed to bully their way to a Stanley Cup by referees who refused to call penalties. The exclamation point was then not suspending Weber. Now the cat is out of the box but there is no way to put it back in without engaging in capricious justice.

For instance in the Senators–Rangers series. I hate what Boyle did to Karlson. Totally bushleague, has nothing to do with hockey, and provides no entertainment value. If the refs had acted as impartial and just arbiters they would have penalized Boyle, the Sens would have had a two man advantage, Boyle would have been “undisciplined” and nothing would have escalated. Instead they abdicated their responsibility.

By contrast, I have no problem with Carkner jumping on Boyle. The signal had been sent by the league that they weren’t interested in enforcing the rules. Vigilantism will always emerge in the absence of law. Moreover in the abscence of law vigilantism is always right. The problem isn’t trying to get rid of fighting. The problem is a cowardly refusal to enforce the rules.

What the NHL needs is the rule of law but they don’t understand the concept. They want to interfere as little as possible in the outcome of the contest but they don’t understand is that their policy of non-interference creates the context within which the contest is held. In this case doing nothing is doing something.

Neal will be an interesting test case. He should be suspended for the rest of the series. If he was that would cool everything right out and justice would be served.

So I’m torn. The games have been amazing but that is despite the NHL’s disgraceful handling of discipline.

Boyle-Karlsson was no different than any of the other scrums that go on in any game though?? Jumping someone towards the end of their shift in response to a scrum is stupid and cowardly. Bullying and intimidating have always been a part of the game. I don't know why that dude is kind of trying to lump that in with cheap shots.

Far more egregious has been basically all of the dumb shit the Penguins have been doing, Backstrom's crosscheck to the face of an oppoent (after coming off a concussion himself no less!), etc

The Weber thing thing was certainly not a hockey play, but it was hardly some kind of suspendable thing in my mind.

I think the Weber thing was suspendable just because of the emphasis on the head this season. Weber had no other intent then to cause pain/injury to the HEAD of another player when he put Zetterberg's head into the glass, and that was right after a miffed punch to the head. It was near the end of the game and it really was absolutely unnecessary and a potentially dangerous play and Shannahan himself said it was mostly due to no injuries to Z. That is the problem imo intent should be the primary and not if they got injured or not because just because you got lucky a player didn't get hurt doesn't mean the behavior behind an action wasn't there.

Hell reports are that Z's helmet was CRACKED so if true gives an idea of intent there (or how shitty their quality of helmets are

Oh and that Shaw suspension was lulz worthy imo. So inconsistent these playoffs.

As a Vancouver fan, I have to say I'm looking forward to Wednesdays game. Vancouver with the exception of their goaltending (both goalies have been great as far as I'm concerned) has simply not showed up for a game yet.

If they get swept I think AV will face some heat. Otherwise, I'm loving the series. Kings are showing some real drive to win!

As for the officiating... How could it get any more inconsistent? I don't know if it's been posted already but theNHL Wheel of Justice is hilarious!

I got todd bertuzzi banned for life for what he did to Steve Moore so this is not a very accurate wheel IMO.

Then again I got Todd Bertuzzi banned for life so an obcsene gesture towards Shea Webber lol

Agree. Was there another Boyle-Karlsson incident, or are we just talking about that thing where Boyle kitten-pawed Karlssons head a few times? How can anybody take a post seriously that begins by positing that as an example of "totally bushleague".

It just seems to me like the media coverage of the NHL is getting more hysterical each year. Getting pretty tired of it!

PS. I will say, though, the officiating/disciplinary action has been inconsistent. Not that that's new or anything...

Hey Toews, how about that piece of shit teammate of yours who gave Sedin a flying elbow? Mind him getting a few games retroactively tagged on or something? Like I said, these upcoming hearings are make or break for the NHL imo, how many pending hearings are we up to?

The NHL needs to clean this shit up. Letting this kind of violence go on (and just letting fights go on in general) makes the NHL look like a joke across North America and the rest of the world, even if it is the hockey league with the highest skill. Clean checks/hits are part of the game, but fighting isn't. Keep this a professional sport instead of a damn UFC match. The mentality of these hillbilly players that just want to throw punches and make retaliatory shots at opposing players makes it embarrassing to be an NHL fan, and the only way to change their mentality and get them to grow up is to strictly enforce rules.

Oh give me a break. Fighting has always been apart of the game.

Embarassed? Yet you cannot get enough of it and keep watching and you crave it. Violence is hotwired in our heads. The refs have already stepped up by making a lot of calls early on in the games to let them know they'll get penalized. Shannie is doing all he can do. It's nothing more than a glorified title that Colin Campbell knows all to well. He just handed out Asham 5 games and Neal 1 game for the charge. There's not much else he can do.

When your adrenaline is running that high and the crowd is responding to everything on the ice. It's only going to rally the players up more.

No jokes here just hard fought battles.

I think the issue was that Boyle ran up to Karlsson after the whistle (he wasn't even near Karlsson when the whistle went off), and then grabbed him and pushed him a couple times. Just the run of the mill stuff that happens after the whistle during the playoffs.

The issue was that they both got 2 minute penalties, even though Karlsson didn't respond.

Okay, disregarding the whole fighting strawman you just threw up, what do you think about bashing heads into things or running elbows into them maliciously?

Fighting is only part of the NHL's game, not the rest of the world's game, and give me one good reason that it should be a legitimate part of the game besides "It makes money". That has and always will be a force that degrades and devalues any and every type of art/sport.

One game suspension for James Neal, four game suspension for Asham. Methinks they both deserved at least one more game. But hey, it's gonna be a sweep anyway!

So the recent suspensions:

Shaw - 3 games
I think this one is fair. I do believe Shaw tried to avoid the goaltender, but as Shanahan points out, he could have tried much earlier.

Asham - 4 games
I think this one is also fair. Xcheck to the torso followed by punch behind the head.

Neal - 1 game
This one is the joke sentence. 2 hits in less than a minute that could have injured 2 players. I would have suspended him for at least what Asham got, probably more because it was 2 events in less than a minute of play.

Backstrom - 1 game
Also a joke. Give him at least 4 games. It's the exact same thing as Asham except this time he does make contact with the head but doesn't punch him. Thank god the crosscheck hit Peverley's visor otherwise he'd be a mouth-breather for a few months.

This Wheel of Justice website looks more and more like the real thing... I can't wait to see what happens to Torres. Probably "a good hockey play".
Edit: And the medical team of Chicago will be fined for jumping on the ice before the whistle :p

If you don't like the fighting don't watch the NHL, there are various alternatives to hockey leagues you can follow. It is part of the game, and a part of how a lot of people grew up watching it. The cheap shots are the part that ruins it, and it is usually pussies who cannot fight the other teams tough guy straight up who do it, they should be axed from the league or given suspensions that are the same length as the injured players injury, with them paying that players salary out of their own pocket(hopefully the next CBA the PA lets fines be a bit steeper).

I'm starting to think you don't watch hockey year round. Really now? How the heck you think Canadians play the game and why other countries look to our model and systems? It's a winning formula.

"Making money?" It's always been apart of the game and yes we enjoy violence. Why do you think the ratings have been so high? Degrades the game?

lmao

That's fresh.
