They lost the team because no one would give Marcel Aubut a free $300 million dollar new building to play in so he sold the team.

The language barrier helped BUILD THE TEAM.
Lindros refused to go there because he didnt like the french culture. So they traded him.

They got the rights to eventual Hart Trophy winner Peter Forsberg, as well as Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Mike Ricci, Kerry Huffman, Steve Duchesne, a 1st round selection (Jocelyn Thibault) in 1993, a 1st round selection (later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, later traded to the Washington Capitals—Nolan Baumgartner) in 1994, and $15,000,000 cash.

Since the trade, they have won eight division titles and two Stanley Cup championships, due in part to the play of Forsberg, and the later addition of Patrick Roy, whom the Avalanche received in a later package deal that included Thibault

And Lindros got a bunch of headaches... nice trade Gauthier!

get your facts straight.

New $500 million areana announced in Seattle The current arena houses the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL seats 17k, which is kinda low on the numbers side. NHL has said playing in current areana while new one is building new one is OK.
In 2007 and again in feb, Don Levin (Chicago Wolves owner) expressed significant intrest in planting an NHL team in Seattle. Theres an article on the Globe and Mail site about it but its behind a membership wall.

Phoenix is 50-50 coming here(seattle)

Quebec City is NOT garunteed a NHL team. There is other intrest, there is other cities. Seattle absolutly could host an NHL team and is taking all the same steps as QC.

edit: wrong article linked >_<

The deal is preliminary and contingent on overcoming some major hurdles -- including Hansen’s success in landing both an NBA and NHL team for Seattle.

the building in quebec faces no hurdles... if u will pardon this pun..
the building in quebec is fait accompli

its too late dude.... the wheels are already in motion...
Betman has already promised the owner of Quebecor the team.

also, until this thing is built.. where do they play?

" The sightlines, however, benefitted the SuperSonics at the expense of the junior Thunderbirds, with a scoreboard that was significantly off-center in a hockey configuration."

the scoreboard was over 1 of the nets lolz

The KeyArena in Seattle is a disaster for hockey and unusable at the NHL level.

all this stuff has been discussed ad-naseum on the Fan 590. i listen to it while i'm playing SC2 .. this is how i know all this crap.

but honestly... i'm still waiting to understand how people in Churchill are going to make it to a Jets game?

the only way the Quebec City government is spending 7 million on "Emergency Renovations" for the Colissee is if they've been guaranteed NHL hockey next year.

Where will the team play? Did you not read my post? Seattle has a WHL team, they can play there for the 2 years while new building is built. Its not great but its only a bit worse then QC's arena.

I do not listen to the fan 590 cause I don't get it here. If betman said QC gets the team you'd think that would be all over TSN.ca and Sportsnet.ca. Its not. Nothing in the Globe and Mail, Nothing on CBC.ca either. Makes me not beleive you when you say QC has already been given the team.

dude.... they would play in "THe Key Arena" and i've already outlines its problems. the scoreboard is over 1 of the nets.
The Key Arena is unsuitable for play at the NHL level.

cmon man.. they have to rape Glendale for another $20 million before officially leaving. this is why they can't announce it.
they have to prove to some accounting auditor how the Coyotes lost $20 million this year and that gives them the right to pull that money out of an "escrow account"... after they get that cash out of the escrow account that Glendale filled up with tax payer's money they are GONE!... this is robbery without a mask.

btw.. Fan590.com is owned by the same guys who own SportsNet.CA
in fact its new name is "SportsNet 590 The Fan"

Yes, the key arena is where they'd play. I know its flaws but I Betman has stated the building is fine for temporary useage while a new arena is built.

I don't see Glendale giving another cent personally.

Nordiques attendance was fine.
the Canadian dollar was worth $0.72 in USD.

Marcel Aubut sold the team for a major profit and they became the colorado avalanche.

the Montreal Canadiens had to pay for their own new arena.
Aubut wanted the government to pay for a brand new facility.
The government could never do this if the Canadiens paid for their own new place.

Rather than spend $150 million++ for a new arena he sold the team and collected premium US Dollars in doing so.

Don't compare Quebec City to Seattle as far as support for hockey. There is no comparison.

I spent 1 four month work term in Seattle...no one knows anything about hockey nor cares about it except transplanted Vancouver-ites.

I remember telling people at work i was going out that night to play hockey... half of them said "you mean ice hockey right?"

Just because a team isn't necessarily a traditional hockey town doesn't mean it won't be a viable market for hockey. Texas, California, Carolina, Florida, and Georgia all have/had hockey teams.

Also, yes, there are other forms of hockey. I don't see how that is a point at all. We play inline/floor hockey in the summer months all the time here in Minnesota.

Out of the locations you named, only the California teams seem really viable. All others have had trouble in recent years. Dallas had ownership problems and attendence decline, Carolina had 3000 ppl in the stands before winning a cup but then seem to have stabilized in recent years so we'll leave them be for now. Florida Panthers were rumored to move last year and Columbus is just horrible for 10 years now and is also in talks of moving if people don't show up. Just because there is a team there doesn't mean it's a viable market.

The NHL THOUGHT it would be but they made mistakes imo.

Florida is about to clinch their first division title and Dallas and Carolina are both stable now. Furthermore, just because it's a Canadian location doesn't mean it's an absolutely sure thing either. Quebec already lost the team once, and a big part of that is the language barrier between QC and the rest of the league.

So Québec lost their team because of the language barrier ....

Now you're going to explain your logic here before I officialy label you as a royal troll haha.

I didn't say that was the only reason, but to my knowledge, QC speaks French more or less exclusively, yes? This creates a barrier between the rest of the league and that city. This isn't Europe. We don't exactly have a multilingual culture, so speaking different languages can ostracize fans from outside the region and players that may be looking to play there.

Alright. Well let me reassure you here. Yes, 80% of people in the province of Québec is born speaking french. The major concentration of non french speaking people is in Montréal. I'm 20 minutes north of MTL and there's not a lot of english this far out. Now the Canadiens don't have trouble signing players because of that. They have trouble because they suck and the pressure to play here is the highest in the league (maybe Toronto is on the same level).

Now when the Nordiques were around, most of the staff were people from Québec but I assure you that everyone important speaks english very well. The only incident that is really known of a player refusing to come play in Québec City is Eric Lindros and that was because he was being managed by his parents who were anti-French Canadians. When the nordiques left, they had most of the players who helped them win the Stanley Cup the very next year.

Players who played in Québec City always had, to my knowlege, just really good memories and good things to say of the city. Hell even some who didn't play here. I'd invite you to read a recent blog by former NHLer Bobby Holik. He has interesting points and even mention some of the challenges that awaits a new team in Québec. It's a good read:

http://holikonhockey.com/bobby-blog/les-quebec-nordiques/

And another point about "ostracize fans from outside the region". The Montréal Canadiens are the only NHL team in Québec province right now and they certainly have the most fans on the road. Their glory days created fans everywhere in the league and they regularly show up in the crowd when the Habs are on the road. And it seems like we find unusual MTL fans all the time to my surprise. When we drafted Mike Komisarek and Chris Higgins (2 Americans born in New York) they said their fathers were huge MTL fans and so they had adopted the team. You know the actor Viggo Mortensen? Who the hell would've thought he was habs crazy! Another born American. And there are hundreds like that. We have visibility as much as any other team in spite of the "Language barrier".

So I don't really know how the language barrier has anything to do with the problems that Québec had in the past.

Wouldn't the bold part be a response to your whole post? If Montreal is very bilingual, then that negates a lot of the troubles that QC might have had. The rest of your post has nothing to do with a team in QC because you're talking about Montreal.

Yes I used Montréal as an example. Can you please, PLEASE explain to me why the language barrier affects in ANY way the viability of a team in Québec City? And do you think that only the population of Montréal is making the team viable there? No! The whole region around Montréal (Made of 95% french speaking people) is supporting the team in majority compared to Montréal.

the $20 million is in an ESCROW ACCOUNT. the NHL can't withdraw it until the show accounting records to an auditor that the team lost $20 million or more this year.
Glendale can't remove the money without hte NHL agreeing to let them.
Glendale has requested the NHL give them their $20 million back.. and the NHL... ROFLMAO .. has yet to respond

The day the NHL gets that cash out of that escrow account is the day the Coyotes are as good as gone.

you guys are funny

Quebec is the 2nd most populous province in the Terran Dominion of Canada and can easily support 2 teams.
Hell the Ramparts draw 12,000 a game and are the biggest draw in the QMJHL.
I say we call the team the Quebec Coyote-Parts.
Here is the new logo

Eric Lindros snubbing his nose at francophone culture is why the team won the cup...
they got like 8 guys ... 15 million dollars and 2 first round draft picks for the guy.

As long as the people of quebec have money... the NHL will find a way to take it from them... even if they want to communicate in hyroglifics

The "barrier" in any english speaking city in the USA that currently does not have a team is that no one in Lexington, Sacramento, San Antonio, Spokane or Fort Lauderdale gives a crap about hockey. That "Barrier" is much harder to overcome in the internet age than this silly 'language barrier' thing. Hand each player a copy of Rosetta Stone.

Longshot?

The Coyotes are gone from Phoenix.

if Quebec is a "long shot" as you describe it then who is your favourite?

I don't care really. No one knows where Bettman will choose. A long shot I can say is Saskatoon (I will let you assume if i am super serious or not). Like I said I don't care and we won't know until it happens.

3rd period of the last game, Sharks vs Kings, was really intense and fun to watch. Overtime starting atm, a fitting dramatic end

no, i said if these 2 cities are "long shots" then who do you think the favourite to get the team

not another long shot.

as in the 1994 New York Rangers were the favourite to win the Stanley Cup that year.
The 1994 Vancouver Canucks were a longshot to win the Cup.

There is no favourite, Bettman knows and will not tell, the analysts know a little bit, but they do not know the ultimate decision. The favourite would probably be Seattle over Quebec in this case. I picked my favourite, now I don't really care to have to explain anything on my choice because I do not care.

I think the caps have a good chance against Boston if they would just be more consistent, especially at goaltending. They have a really great team they're just so inconsistent :\

Prediction time foos!

NYR --- Ottawa
Boston --- Washington
Florida --- New Jersey
Pittsburgh --- Philadelphia

Vancouver --- Los Angeles
St. Louis --- San Jose
Phoenix --- Chicago
Nashville --- Detroit

Note I'm callin' 4 "upsets" in west... also I feel bad for Nashville. Such a great season and how are they rewarded... with the Wings. West is so beastly.

You really think that Los Angeles could upset Vancouver before Ottawa could upset NYR?

And there's just no way San Jose is going to beat St. Louis. I'd be fucking blown away if that happened.

My pick:

NYR - Ottawa
Bostion - Washington
Florida - New Jersey
Pittsburgh - Philadelphia

Vancouver - Los Angeles
St. Louis - San Jose
Phoenix - Chicago
Nashville - Detroit

Detroit's been pretty shaky here at the end of the season, going 4-10 over the past month (since 10 March). I really don't see any upsets in the west. I'd say we're more likely to see Ottawa or Washington give upsets over the other two. Washington's been on a roll recently, and smashed the Rangers in their last game. They've got some momentum to face Boston.

Finals Prediction

Vancouver - Pittsburgh in 7

Vancouver's only gone up from last season, and if Luongo cracks like he did last season, Schneider has been amazing and is there to take his spot in a heartbeat, and the fans love him. I'd say that Vancouver has that hunger and wants redemption from last season. They won't let it slip away again.
A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else.

NYR - Ottawa
The Rangers always seem to choke in the post season.

Boston - Washington
The Bruins have had a great season, and will probably take this series.

Florida - New Jersey
The Devils have more playoff experience which should help them.

Pittsburgh -Philadelphia
I hate the Penguins, so go Flyers! Whoever wins this series will make it to the finals.

Vancouver - Los Angeles
The Canucks are strong, but this series might be close if Quick can stand on his head.

St. Louis - San Jose
The Blues had a great regular season, but lack playoff experience. Also San Jose knows what it takes to make it to the Conference finals!

Phoenix - Chicago
The Coyotes seem to have a consistent team of players you may have never heard of. They may not be the strongest but everyone seems to have their part to play in their success.

Nashville - Detroit
I like both teams, but the Red Wings are my favourite team, so that is where the bias comes in. Whoever wins this series will make it to the finals.

I would shy away from picking Philly or Pit to win it all. Hell I aint gonna pick either to make it to round two because these two teams are gonna kill each other. Theres gonna be nothing left in the tank for another round.

my picks:
NYR - Ottawa
Bostion - Washington
Florida - New Jersey
Pittsburgh - Philadelphia

Vancouver - Los Angeles
St. Louis - San Jose
Phoenix - Chicago
Nashville - Detroit
