Just look at how many points he'd have to spend to have enough mana, Blood Magic not only reduces nodes that you need to put into mana, it also can help your survivability because now you're encouraged to invest into more life and create a source of life from attacking so you can nullify the cast of your skills all the while healing yourself. Then for sticky situations you'd have pots, if he's also using endurance charges and possible a granite or two, he will take so little damage which will allow even better survival.

Pwere did a good build for you, except pick up Arcane Efficiency (10% mana reduc) then I think Leather & Steel outperforms the pure armor nodes near the start of the Duelist tree since you're going Iron Reflexes. Then I removed the two 15% fire resists, go around save a point then go into the Mana nodes above Leather & Steel. (Mana outperforms as a node than majority of the dps nodes)

Yeah thanks to Pwere, always has great advice and he was nice enough to craft you a cool build. Pwere what do you think of my minor adjustments? I still consider you more experienced based on your posts but the logic is through the Mana nodes to the right there are two life node circles that can wrap up your end-game points.
+40% Leather&Steel is not better than +50% armor if you use IR. The +40% doesn't apply twice to evasion anymore, so you end up with either 40% that applies to both Evasion and Armor, or 50% that applies to both Evasion and Armor...
About the resist, you're basically trading one point for 30% fire resist. It's worth it until your fire res is maxed.
About mana, I think Blood Magic is simply better in this part of the tree. It makes the game so much simpler and frees up points + flasks.

@startran, I agree that melee is simply harder to play at the moment. Physical vs Ele is not that clear cut, however, due to how good Sword passives are. But we don't know how it will be in OB, or how it will be one week into OB. So all I did was take the general idea of his build and optimize it to the best of my knowledge.

Even if melee is weak at the moment, the build isn't.

Phys Dmg vs Ele dmg is extremely clear cut. Ele Dmg blows Phys Dmg out of the water in so many ways it's not even funny. The only way Phys Dmg can maintain pace in terms of clearing + surviving is if you have the most baller gear possible and are running Vaal Pact. Ele Dmg lets you level extremely quickly because you get to invest basically almost all your nodes into defense while minimal offense, while still doing idiotic amounts of dmg, especially when you grab a WED gem.


The Ele Dmg Nodes + Item Mods + Gem make Ele Dmg way too good, especially when you start getting the proper links and getting silly stuff like ele pierce + ele weakness curse + 120% weapon ele dmg. The one thing Phys Dmg builds might have is that they have better sustain if they get caught in a sticky situation, but Ele Dmg builds hardly ever deal with that because they just blow the living snot out of everything anyways.

Lightning Strike. You get mostly attack speed nodes, grab a few phys dmg nodes, and then proceed to basically murder everything. You don't overdo the phys dmg nodes because you need to expend alot of nodes to survive as a melee character.

Obv grabbing WED nodes are a given.

Lightning Strike with chain, it murders rooms so fast. I wish there was more melee skills that are as good as LS.

What about weapons? Dagger/Shield? Sword? 2handed weapons?

Best class to go LS build should be Templar right?

what is the best class for a lightning strike build and why? can you pls make me a build for one? i still haven't played after having a key for almost one week. being a perfectionist sucks. i know i'm gonna mess up my class/build for sure.

Most safe would probably be a Templar that focuses on life and armor and bonus elemental damage passives. Then you got two options, do you want to go Eldritch Battery (turn all your ES into mana) so you can sustain more auras or have less auras and keep ES for defense. Whatever weapon you choose to use here you will want a fast one (as with all elemental builds).

Your other option is Shadow that used 2 daggers and relies on ES and Evasion for defense. His bonus damage does not come from bonus elemental damage passives but more and better critical strikes (why two daggers are used). This is a character that is less safe then templar but has potential for more kill speed.

Maybe for HC. For default more attack speed and more crit chance is better (especially since diamonds are getting nerfed in OB). Not to mention you can get even more crit chance mods for daggers that you cannot for a shield. You cannot get 40+% block without investing in block passives and I would rather invest more into life or ES.

Is Unwavering Stance + Iron Reflexes really not that good later on? I was planning on making a two-hander melee Marauder as my first OB character with US/IR/Resolute Technique. However, the first iteration of this build idea was a armor+evasion Duelist two-hander melee (with Arrow Dodging) and I decided not to run that build because it seemed like Marauder has a better position in the passive tree for two-handers and he doesn't really get much evasion anyway.

No, we don't have open beta patches or complete look of passive tree. What was leeked are old patch notes and Kripp didn't cover each and every change. Not to mention things can change between Kripp talked about changes and real OB.

Oops, well fair enough. However his videos of gameplay go farther than the patchnotes in explaining a lot of the changes. Thanks for the link, though!

EDIT: I realize things can change between now and OB, but there might be people that have literally heard nothing of the alpha or do not know of Kripparian's stream. I was linking them for those people and not really intending it to be the official final authority on every change.

Which still does not change the fact that better kill speed is often better then a bit more defense.
You need 3 to 6 passives to get 40% block with nerfs to block some patches ago.
I would rather take 15% block, more attack speed and better crit and use those passives in defensive bonuses that are less random.
