Every +% to critical chance increase the base critical chance of the gem or weapon. If you get a 25% and then a 10% increase to critical chance your chance of getting a critical strike is: Critical strike chance = Base critical chance * (25% + 10%) When it comes to understanding the game there is one thread above them all here. I would suggest that everyone wanting to understand the game more in depth reads it since it is not that long and it really is concentrated informations you will need to understand to really appreciate the game!

No, that's wrong. 25% increased crit chance on 8% would be 10% total, like you originally said.
When he says that increased is additive and more is multiplicate, he's talking about how they modify OTHER modifiers. Like, if you had 25% increased and 10% increased, the final value would be Base amount * 135%. If you had 25% more and 10% more, the total bonus would be Base amount * 125% * 110%.

oh ok. that makes soooo much more sense, thank you.
how high of base amount have you guys seen for crit chance? is that ever going to be worth getting?

Yeah don't listen to me lol, i'm too busy playing right now to check my facts/explain, but what they said is right, sorry for the confusion. =P
If anyone wants to add me feel free. Currently on my character named Raxmer.

reading the link radiatoren posted above now Some weapons can get as high as 7.5% or something around that. Also magical versions of those weapons can have a magic mod that locally increases the base crit chance. Then then modified crit chance is modified by all passives and global increased critical chance passives.
As for spells I think highest base crit is 6%, but Ice Spear has 2 forms, and 2 form has 600% bonus to crit chance (global bonus). 2nd form activates at about half screen range. 1st form pierces targets, 2nd form does not.

Early on crit is useless so you should avoid it unless it's to get to a node you want. You want to go for defensive passives on the skill tree rather than offensive generally so you can actually survive, especially on a first character. It's far better to go overboard on defense than it is to skimp and just die over and over.

so should you make a build to level faster planning on respeccing later?

No. You should plan out what nodes you're going for by using the skill tree on the website and get the things that will make leveling easier first.

from the week long hardcore race, Lvl 81 character running Lvl 68 map in a group gets close to 1 shot and dies with 4608 Life gone in a flash.
the character's energy shield will not recharge because the map has a "chaos damage / second" mod that won't let energy shield recharge.

Crit Chance/Crit builds in general are not worth it because of the overpowered nature of Diamond Flask. However, with the upcoming changes, that's probably going to change very soon. There's going to be some significant changes that is going to massively change the metagame, such as CI being significantly weaker (well; it's going to be weak until you get all the nodes, which means you have to spend alot more points to be defensive/tanky rather than like a handful and running and gunning with 30k ES + 10K DPS).
Just work on a safe build. Damage nodes are significantly overrated even in softcore. You can get tons of damage just from links and proper items. No need to go big time with like 50+ nodes into offense; you at most need like 25 or so (depends on the build of course). A vast majority of your nodes should be defensive nodes, mainly because dying sucks even in SC (it's like 15% penalty in Merciless I think, which is really, really, really shitty if it happens) let alone HC.

Build is alright although I would suggest not taking Unwavering Stance/IR and getting Armor/Evasion gear to double up on your ability to survive end game as a melee. If your gear and aura/skill passive setup is right, you can reach pretty good armor/evasion levels all while having a good stack of hp. End game you'll be able to survive alot of fights that you normally couldn't with pure armor/hp. Armor/hp is the worst defensive mechanic end game because of the nature of how hard things hit (increase crit dmg mobs for instance hit really fucking hard).
Also phys dps isn't something I'd recommend for a beginner. You can invest minimal points into offense with just attack spd = > weapon ele dmg (go into the templar tree and right to the ranger) and just mow things down with lightning strike. However, I am unsure of whether or not they are nerfing weapon ele dmg in the open beta (probably not). Phys dps requires you to be real ballsy and really know what you're doing, knowing when to back off, knowing when you can survive and leech, and which bosses you can fight and which you can't.
Also, if you really want to get nitpicky, the Ranger makes a better sword and boarder than the Duelist because you don't waste your first few points. That is unless you do the double stack of Steel Skin / Leather and Steel nodes, then the Duelist becomes significantly tankier with the correct gear.

Avoid +10 stat points as much as you can. They are basically wasted points. Also, don't plan for all the points. Plan for about 95, but your build really has to shine around 80.
Also, grab as much life as you can.
This is closer to what you'd want, by keeping your main trends: + Show Spoiler +Sword&Board DuelistNo reason to get Resolute Technique since swords have accuracy. No reason not to get Blood Magic. High Armor + Endurance charges work, and you grab one extra charge from a quest. More sword passives for more damage. Grab Point Blank if you end up using Lightning Strike. Protip: Log out and log back in to go to town.

This game feels more like work than a game. I just watched kripp video and I didn't understood a damn thing he said and I played like a char to 20 in a open beta weekend. If 1.0.7 for D3 hits I won't play PoE soon, if not I'll give it a chance at the 23rd.
|
Heh, I can assure you that he was doing just as much theorycrafting in the first few weeks of D3. PoE has more customization and more commitment, however, so that's why he's doing all the work before OB hits.

Told you Travis, have to plan this stuff. As for leveling you can invest in the early really good nodes (one's that have 20/20 in one point, then refund it after). Also like I said, plan on using 60-70 points for a decent build. Derp, didn't see BM.
Yeah thanks to Pwere, always has great advice and he was nice enough to craft you a cool build.

Also like I said, plan on using 60-70 points for a decent build. + Show Spoiler +Pwere did a good build for you, except pick up Arcane Efficiency (10% mana reduc) then I think Leather & Steel outperforms the pure armor nodes near the start of the Duelist tree since you're going Iron Reflexes. Then I removed the two 15% fire resists, go around save a point then go into the Mana nodes above Leather & Steel. (Mana outperforms as a node than majority of the dps nodes) Yeah thanks to Pwere, always has great advice and he was nice enough to craft you a cool build. Pwere what do you think of my minor adjustments? I still consider you more experienced based on your posts but the logic is through the Mana nodes to the right there are two life node circles that can wrap up your end-game points.
Dump the Phys Dmg nodes that don't have ASPD. Grab the 30% Weapon Ele Dmg and use Lightning Strike as the primary skill. People playing melee need to use that skill since it is significantly easier to utilize than going any kind of phys dps build revolving around double strike/cleave/etc.
Unwavering Stance is abit overrated, especially on maps with tons of arrow mobs. If you get a bad map with arrow mobs, you pretty much get blasted and die instantly.
In general, phys dmg based builds take ALOT of thought. Weapon Ele Dmg based builds are much more straight forward because you get away with alot more defense, and less nodes wasted on offensive nodes. Mainly because links + WED gem = gg
Actually in general, it's just better to not go melee even if you do the classic ground slam marauder. Melee seems easier to start off with at first, but ranged in the late game pretty much blows melee out of the water. This may change with the upcoming changes, but it just means ranged has to invest a few more points into defense than they used to, which means nothing really changed (especially CI Cold Witches who rely primarily on links + gem levels to deal their dmg).

So what is everyone planning to run for OB? I'm going to go Blood Magic Bowplar.

I still consider you more experienced based on your posts but the logic is through the Mana nodes to the right there are two life node circles that can wrap up your end-game points. +40% Leather&Steel is not better than +50% armor if you use IR. The +40% doesn't apply twice to evasion anymore, so you end up with either 40% that applies to both Evasion and Armor, or 50% that applies to both Evasion and Armor... About the resist, you're basically trading one point for 30% fire resist. It's worth it until your fire res is maxed. About mana, I think Blood Magic is simply better in this part of the tree. It makes the game so much simpler and frees up points + flasks.
@startran, I agree that melee is simply harder to play at the moment. Physical vs Ele is not that clear cut, however, due to how good Sword passives are. But we don't know how it will be in OB, or how it will be one week into OB. So all I did was take the general idea of his build and optimize it to the best of my knowledge.
Even if melee is weak at the moment, the build isn't.On January 21 2013 13:37 Tennet wrote: So what is everyone planning to run for OB? I'm going to go Blood Magic Bowplar. I'm going for Conduit/Power Siphon templar to play with friends, and probably physical bow Ranger for solo HC.
