CiV really ruined it for me by taking away government types and religion. Social policies don't give you even a tiny part of depth and possibilities the other two offer. And diplomacy in it has to be the biggest troll ever (and city-states in general).
I actually found spreading religion a pain in the ass in Civ 4. You have to create missionaries and manually move them to target cities. It was horrendous on bigger maps, especially spreading it to far away cities across oceans.

IMO, Civ IV is better than Civ V as far as strategic gameplay and thinking. I prefer to play Civ V, however, because the UI and game feel are much more friendly, and is more fun because of this. I believe there is similar amounts of depth as far as strategy choices and civ's, and I really enjoy the hex grid + no unit stacking, though I do feel the unit stacking made Civ IV a much more difficult and challenging game.

What are the traits of religion that make it adaptable to a strategy game?
Normally the different powers are competing on the battlefield and they’re competing for political control of the map. But if you all of a sudden, on that same map, have different religions in a separate layer of competition, where all of a sudden a religious battle for control of territory is going on at the same time, that’s sort of separate, but not entirely divorced from the political conflict, because sometimes, you know, the enemy’s armies will stop your missionaries from being able to get places, or they might clamp down on your religious activities so you can’t get your religious units into the areas that you want to, and it comes a really—rather than fighting a flat, two-dimensional game, it almost has a third dimension to it.
How is religion embodied in the Gods and Kings expansion for Civilization V?If you just built a new city in your empire, probably the religion is just going to creep over into that city normally from the pressure from the other cities you already have established with that religion in your empire. So you don’t really necessarily need to move a missionary over there, you can send your missionary out into other people’s lands and start to spread your faith there. One of the interesting dynamics with Gods & Kings in terms of how religion is interacting with the other systems in the game is, you’ll see that some people like religion being spread to them and others do not. ![[image loading]](http://killscreendaily.com/media/img/articles/2012/06/hereistand.jpg)

Diablo 2 is better then diablo 3 ... starcraft 1 is better then sc2 ... civ 4 is better then 5.. I think some people are stuck in time.. and they wanna the same game after 5-10 years.. why making something new.. Except that civ4 was better than civ3! and starcraft1 was better than warcraft2 and civ2 was better than civ1... ofc you will find a few people arguing this but seriously, civ5 is trash compared to civ4 :D You forgot to add in my opinion , not everything you write is a fact. Trash means Civ V is really bad.. you thing is really bad ? Anyway if you love so much Civ 4 , you can make easy Civ 4 from Civ 5 with few mods , will be the same game , with better graphics. IMO , with expansion set + some patches and mods , Civ 5 will kick Civ 4 ass really hard. You must remmember that civ 4 is old game , with 2 expansion and multiple patches , vanilla civ 4 was not that epic. Well that's just your opinion man

This is a highly succinct way of putting it. I hope the expansion adds some depth to it. My main gripe is the AI though, its just not at all interesting to play against in the current state of the game. Sure I can crack the difficulty way up so its cheating, but its still stupid as heck and only becomes challenging because it has so many resources to play around with.
Im hoping the AI gets better though. Civ 4 eventually became one of my favorite go-to games for wasting time and having fun.

Overhaul of combat and AI. Those were the words I really liked to hear in there.

I'm kinda disgruntled about this game, I'm a big Civ4 fan and I don't find Civ5 very enjoyable. Maybe because I tend to warmonger and 1UPT killed this game for me (combat system is worse in every way imo).
Think I'll wait until the next expansion.

Really excited by some of those new civs. They're really pushing the boundaries of their game, which is something I value a lot about a developer.

Think I'll wait until the next expansion. Yep, because they're totally going to get rid of the one-unit-per-tile rule and combat system in that expansion.
I'm a big civ4 fan, too, but its combat system was just boring and not strategic at all.

I haven't play Civ IV but I can't see how much fun it would be to build some ridiculous super army that can just kill everything because it has so many concentrated units. I like the idea and the look of "invasions" in Civ 5 alot. I think I will enjoy the expansion even more.

Really wouldnt mind a mod that revamped the combat system to resemble both good elements of civ5 and civ 4. I was not a fan of the stacks of doom, but it also feels dumb trying to scatter my army around to try to get through a mountain pass (dumb). How about limited stacks of like kind units? A sortie of horses would be sweet, just like a chinese cho ko nu battery.

I played Civ V for 274 Hours according to Steam and I just can't wait for the expansion. It seems like the game will be much more deeper than the original. I bought the expansion already and I'm just so excited. I'm gonna try Atilla first from Civs, because he was a Hun (Turks who came from Asia and kicked ass in Europe so much that he established his own Empire)

If you guys get tired of this easy stuff, try this one out: FreeCiv
It's free and works on many platforms (Windows, Linux, OS X).
Some features: Generally comparable with Civilization I & II. Up to 126 players! Artificial Intelligence (AI) computer-controlled players. Internet & LAN multiplayer (TCP/IP). Support for a great number of platforms; see Requirements. Premade maps & scenarios! More than 50 playable units and over 300 nations. Modpack support! Internationalization (i18n): translations for many languages available. In-game help system. Full Fog of War. Diplomacy. 30x30 & 96x48 sized tiles, or almost any size you feel like drawing. 2, 64, 256 and more colors!
And generally, even more established Civ players might have problems with beating easy AI in this one on novice difficulty.

Yup, you can have it in hexes too.

If they fixed the ai to not be soexpansionist and made them actually develop their lands far enough to sustain their inflated population then civV would already be worth paying full price for again. There's nothing worse than entering a 100 year war with and see your happiness plummet as U raze all 10 cities towards his capital and gain nothing from it. Also civs are too protective around resources and cities. Commerce can't really be used for anything other than city states and cheating so will always beat U at that. Just buying a foreign city ora luxury resource should be a positive trade relationship however if U are in a position to do such a thing the ai will usually all gang up on U for bullying.
|
Can't wait for the expansion to come out. I'm really looking forward to the AI revamp, since that was (in my opinion) the weakest part of Civ V. Anything that adds further depth to the game (religion, new civs, and the like) would only make it better so long as they beef up the AI, which it looks like they will. Maybe the AI will go along with the happiness system this time?

I like what I'm seeing, but the Carthage bonus looks pretty broke. I love that Haile Selasie is a playable leader now, haha. I want to play as the Rastafari messiah!

Did you guys notice how units have 100 hp rather than 10 hp? I wonder how that's going to affect certain scenarios and balance.
