You should try alternating between the standard games and the scenarios. Some of the achievements that require a deity win takes me weeks to finish lol. Yeah I absolutely intend to explore this entire game. The depth is incredible. Just the right balance for me. Surprised that this thread hasnt had any posts since 2015.
Everybody's moved onto Civ6 (although Civ5 is a super strong game and is in many ways better... and certainly more polished).

yeah, civ5 is really awesome. I played a 1 vs1 "experts" public game lately and we ended up Austria vs Portugal and it was super exciting. Had everything from early bow wars to xbow stalemate and frigate attacks. The game had also no lag, like offline, was fun.
There's basically only two things I'd change with civ5. - Great Generals take 2 turns to complete building a fortress (this way you have to build the forts ahead in time and the other player can't just rush / sneak in a General and steal your fort) - The city state system from civ6. Buying your allied city states one second before declaring war is way too lame.
I don't like the nq mod for example because it feels like civ5 on crack. I like the pace of civ5 and would prefer a few slight adjustments to some culture policies. But well...

I like the nq mod because of that . The games can take 5-8 hours even with the mod, i wouldnt want to play a vanilla game in multiplayer. The group has rules against buying out city states then declaring i think. You can also use a spy to try and get them back even when at war. Agree on the generals though, that mechanic is a bit lame.

City States are just about the only thing I am not a fan of in Civ 5. I typically remove them. Not only does the AI buy them from you right before declaring war, but they also buy them right before the world congress meets to enact/repeal laws or vote for a world leader. Its a pain. So far I really like going for the science victories with Babylon or just domination with Shoshoni on great plains. Bumped up the difficulty to the next level above king too.
edit: city states also take up valuable real estate that I want to expand to. I small map with 6 civs and however many city states make the map feel very crowded.

this game has been the highlight of my gaming experience the past couple of years - it's quite a journey going from knowing nothing to figuring everything out.
It's too bad it loses some of it's charm once you're min maxing constantly and abusing some of the silly AI mechanics, but still a great game and in my opinion more fun than Civ 6.
