i am starting to seriously rage at not being able to win a culture victory because (a) ideological conflict = no open borders = no culture bomb and (b) it takes at least 2 great musicians per 35-40k civ for me to break through and by the time i can faith buy all of them someone gets a space victory. This is after I caught all the culture great wonders too! argh.

Yeah, I've had had the same problem. If you go cultural, there invariably will be some autocratic asshole on another continent (*cough* Shaka *cough*) who will eat the culture of all of his neighbors and be impossible to get influential on peacefully. I've basically stopped going the cultural route because of this.

Religions need changed

Give each religion religion-specific bonuses, not just a list of bonuses that is open to all to be picked with the religion itself just being a name to tack on to your bonuses

The new culture/tourism mechanic is 1) useless until the industrial age really, it has no or very little utility for the first 3/5 of the game, and 2) what everyone else is saying above about it

I am begining to understand now what it mean to ' you need tourism to defend against other tourism'. This game i try to for domination using order path. Then every other civ go for freedom. Eventhough i have fairly high culture, i just ignore my toursim output. Then ,slowly, other civs start to become exotic to me and i suddenly get -30 happiness. This slow me down for almost 30 turn to built happiness building inevery cities.

because it's boring the way it is and there's no true strategic depth to your religion choice

well ya, that was the point. just like GK made the early to mid game more fun, tourism/ideology made late game more challenging. In general I like the changes a lot...except not being able to win a culture victory without already have won some other victory first and then standing by just for the accomplishment.

Diplomacy is still shit though. Hopefully one day Firaxis will develop a game that can rival Victoria II.

? I enjoy Victoria II but I dont really think the diplomacy in that game is any better or gives you more options. its more of a sandbox if you are any reasonably sized country.

Just won a cultural victory with Venice on Immortal at around turn 350, was one hell of a fun game. Once Harun Al-Rashid got the Great Firewall up I thought I was doomed, but some key Great Musician tours sealed the deal

Edit: Oh yeah, and I did it without the Globe Theatre, Uffizi, or Sydney Opera House.

i just want it to have a little utility starting in the early midgame, sure you can consume great writers for a culture dump for example but there were big religious pilgrimages in middle age europe the tourism of the day so i'd like to see something tourism-related in the midgame to reflect that

Ugh, that moment you get put alone on your own mini-continent (as Poland, random), 6 other AI civs together on the big continent (including Shaka and Genghis making it a total warfare mess) and you think everything is going smoothly. NOPE last AI Korea all alone on his superior little continent (salt op), spamming wonders and tearing the tech tree a new one. His army is also by far the largest.

Yeah, I have. You can culture bomb someone that you're at war with.

I don't even know how would one attempt a cultural victory on Deity
The only world wonders with theming bonuses you can reasonably get are Sistine Chapel, Broadway and later ones (Sydney Opera House). The rest are museums+landmarks+hotels and airports. And like 80% of the AIs beeline Archeology..
Really the most reasonable way to get cultural seems to be culturamination (the new dimplomation)

I feel like AI preferences are way out of whack. In any given game, almost all of them beeline aesthetics. There's not enough warmongering anymore, which kinda makes the game pretty easy. In my current game, I've not had one DoW made against me, despite the fact that I have no military and have basically gone full-builder mode in my four core cities. Now, I am sitting on a huge stack of gold, have filled out the commerce tree, built Big Ben, gone autocracy, and just researched flight. I also am an average of about 7 techs ahead of everyone else. I really shouldn't be able to get away with this.

I think they do not structure it in that manner, because that would display a religion specific preference or stereotype according to the games producers. For instance, if Islam gave a military bonus. I could see people getting pretty angry about this.
