Wow, it was really great! At first, I was bothered by what looked like a slow pacing pacing... but at some point, I realized that it contributed ALOT to the tension. None of the fights lasted very long, but by dragging it, it kind of created a feeling of how desperate the fights were : a single mistake = dead.
Kind of sad that it didn't explain some of the stuffs shown in Episode 1 (This anime uses the "flashback" story) Yup, it was great. And I believe it's not very well known outside (definitely not mainstream). Also the art style was perfect for that kind of story. Anyway, glad you liked it. Need to decide what to see next, didn't watch anything after that last Darker Than Black. So far I'm on "bad anime" losing streak, would be nice to break it. Was wondering if there were any other good anime portraying the samurai era? Basilisk is recommended by MAL. Worth watching?
Slightly after the samurai era, but Rurouni Kenshin? :D And similarly Peace Maker Kurogane.
Maybe you'll like Seirei no Moribito.

They finally added more after they randomly cut down their anime selection? I ended up just using hulu, much better for anime.

Netflix was cool for anime when they had Nana.

Kingdom 2 is understandable without S1?

Understandable, sure, but why would you want to miss season 1? It's excellent and definitely worth it. There are many characters and agendas so some backstory will probably be helpful

Basilisk is good, but it's more into fiction - still, enjoyable. Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuiokuhen - absolutely see it. For the rest of Rurouni Kenshin franchise, you can skip it as far as I know. Samurai Champloo is good too, even if you - like me - can't usually stand the rap/r&b or whatever it's called. Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto was solid, a bit disappointing, but it has lot of interesting story facts. Just don't expect too much.
I know of some other "samurai" anime, but these are the only ones I could recommend. Hope that helps a bit.

Because they dislike the Japanese Language. Because reading is hard.
Because it is higher quality

Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto is pretty mah, but it did have one of the best OP ever.
Some rec that others haven't mentioned:
Katanagatari Oh! Edo Rocket (one of my fav underrated show) Gintama (fun if somewhat overrated, but it's not your standard samurai) Juuni Kokuki (old and will never end T.T) Blade of the Immortal
Does Kyoukaisenjou no Horizon count?
Mushibugyou (ongoing) is also interesting, I wouldn't seriously rec it but can take a shot.
|
Horizon? A Samurai anime? Might as well say SRWOG: The Inspector, since it had Rishu, Zengar, and Wodan lol
|
Well, it has all the sengoku samurai charas. Also with it's historical reflection, It's closer to "portraying the samurai era" than alot other stuff suggested.
|
Its also has giant fighting robots and techno-magic, in a world where their flying airship fights against the Italians, Spanish, and British.

He also said "good" anime. Horizon is anything but.

My opinion on what is "good" or not is generally a lot more objective than anything that comes out of your mouth.

I still remember watching it and constantly trying to figure out all of the terms used. Anime with it's own wikipedia, that's for sure. ^^
