I started an account at Scarecrow video, a local video store with a HUGE selection, and have been renting films weekly from there. These are the one's I've watched in the last few weeks, I'll try to keep it quick:
Sunset Boulevard/Ace in the Hole - A pair of classic Billy Wilder movies, both damning indictments of popular media culture. Sunset Blvd. focuses on the Hollywood movie industry, lamenting the lack of creativity in film-making and the way older stars can be ignored until they are involved in some scandal. The narration by the disenchanted protagonist Joe Gillis was my favorite part, as it leads to much of the black comedy of the film.
Ace in the Hole sets it's sights on the news and a reporter who will do anything to get a big story regardless of the consequences. It's a very cynical film, almost none of the characters have any redeeming qualities, and by the time the main character (played by Kirk Douglas, a favorite of mine) realizes that what he is doing is wrong, it is already too late. This was a great supplementary film to the all time classic Sunset Blvd. and as with that movie, it is as poignant now as when it was released.
Fallen Angels/Happy Together - Having previously seen In the Mood For Love, 2046, and Chungking Express, I can easily say Wong Kar-Wai is my favorite Hong Kong director. Therefore, I decided to rent these 2 films by him which I had not seen. Fallen Angels has 2 plotlines: one involving an assassin and his female business partner, the other involving a mute convict who takes over people's shops at night to make money. Happy Together is about a dysfunctional gay couple living in Argentina who, despite the title, are anything but happy together.
I have not gone too in depth about the plotlines of either film because to me that is not what makes Wong Kar-Wai movies great. Instead it's the beautiful cinematography, the believability of character emotion, the natural (mostly unscripted) dialogue, the recurring themes of the elusive nature of love, and the clever use of music all conspiring to create moments of true beauty and powerful emotion. While good, however, I would not put either of these movies as my favorite from the director. If you are interested I would say check out 2046 or In the Mood for Love.
Down By Law - One of Jim Jarmusch's early films, Down by Law can almost be classified as a buddy picture, as the main characters start off hating each other, but eventually grow to depend on one another in some way. The three main characters, a pimp, a radio dj (played by Tom Waits), and an Italian immigrant (played by Roberto Benigni) wind up in jail early on, all for questionable reasons. After a brief stay, they escape the prison and wind up in the Louisiana bayou.
Unsure what to do from there, they get lost in the swamp and wander without really knowing what direction they are going. They do not really trust each other's decisions but individually they are unable to survive leaving the group. Eventually they do all go their separate directions, but without the disdain that they had earlier. It was good but Dead Man is still my favorite Jarmusch film.
Eraserhead - The debut film of David Lynch. It's a dark, disturbing mindfuck. It has to be seen to be understood, as descriptions are simply not enough. However, that's not to say that I necessarily recommend that everyone watch it. Almost every scene will either creep you out or confuse you. It's certainly memorable and entirely unique, but perhaps at the cost of any semblance of enjoyable entertainment.
edit: I guess I failed at keeping it quick haha

I don't see why anyone would recommend repo-men. It's nothing more than a pathetic hollywood attempt at a cyberpunk story, with each and every plot twist laid before the viewer's eyes 20 minutes before it happens.
The soundtrack is dumb beyond all borders, Jude Law believes he's starring in "the hulk" throughout 80% of the movie and Forest Whitaker is relegated to the role of the BBEG. The only character I managed to somehow relate to is coincidentally the bad guy, mostly because he's the only one with human feelings and reactions, since apparently in that world even children are so cynical they would decapitate a puppy in front of Dr House's eyes.
The gore is excessive and in most cases unnecessary, I don't feel like I need to add anything to this to avoid spoiling anything that anyone watching the movie will find out in the first 20 minutes.
Maybe just one thing, + Show Spoiler +WHAT THE FUCK was with the oldboy wannabe reference. Seriously I thought I wouldn't get any more annoyed than after the white room shooting scene but I almost felt offended by the corridor one.

Dude, have you seen the sci-fi movies recently? They can't really get anything right... The only glorious exception would be The Book of Eli, but all the others tend to be just pure bullshit. And in this light, Repo Men is actually watchable as it doesn't hurt watching it as much as seeing Nicholas Cage or George Clooney ruin yet another awesome sci-fi book with worst adaptation possible, completely missing the point. I liked Repo Men for the cruel world they created and Forest Whitaker. Besides that, I believe it was pretty dumb.
Let me list here the only good sci-fi movies post 2000:
Donnie Darko Equilibrium Primer Serenity The Prestige Moon The Book of Eli
Honorable Mentions: Sunshine The Island Children of Men

Although I have to agree on the low-tech cyberpunk world being somewhat interesting and not as bland as expected.
I also disagree on the book of eli being good. Way too cartoonish for my likings. Idiocracy is my answer to that kind of movies, Mike Judge never really fails to deliver.
I have to say I sort of liked s.darko, but it was mostly since donnie darko came out in my high school days and the I viewed the sequel as something adding much needed details to the time-traveling from the first movie. Also they managed to pull off a very good double ending, which is something that most non-asian directors attempting it just botch.
And since we could say they're sci-fi, as a CoC player I'm all for the newer romero zombie movies. Except ofc for Land of the Dead which was just retarded.
Oh and Sean of the Dead was post-2000 too and everyone agrees on it being great. Zombieland was decent too, although woody harrelson did most of the work. Resident evil is a fun movie to watch with friends, although from running zombies the series goes to "LOL zombies everywhere, everyone dies except for Alice because she's the main character and she can do anything".
Surrogates was interesting, and I wouldn't put that lower than The Island. Same could be said for the daybreakers concept, although it horribly failed to deliver.
Thinking about it, I might very well compile a good list of zombie movies by zombie type and date, I dedicated so much time to zombie RPGs I pretty much know my way around...

Most movies in general and not just scifi suck because they have to cater to the dumb masses. Add shitty movie going experience because you have yapping teenagers and crying kids.... fuck that ill just torrent this shit 6 months later.
I only rarely go just for sake of socializing. Cause my friends still think paying ridiculous amount of cash to get subpar experience is fun. (And they are precisely the mainstream target that the movie was made for) But its easier on your rage-o-meter when you decide to go knowing you're going waste money. So I just sit back and relax... watching my dollars burn.

Book of Eli better than children of men?

The one movie I'd like to share is Immortel (ad vitam)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314063/
It's quite bizarre, but once I started watching, I couldn't stop. It grabbed my attention, and even today I'm not sure what I saw. Definately worth watching if you like to tackle strange scenarios. It's a science-fiction movie.

I agree with Moon being one of the best Sci-Fi movies of the last decade. In fact it was one of my top five favorite movies of 2009.

Saw Dinner for Schmucks that was a pretty funny movie, and was actually better than expected

I saw Toy Story 3, Iron Man 2, Inception, Karate Kid, The A-Team, Expendables, and Predator in theaters this summer (in order of best to worst). I have to say, although I thought Inception was great, it wasn't all that. For some reason, it wasn't as immersive as I thought it would be. Perhaps its cause I expected it to exceed my expectation. Ah well. Toy Story 3 3d, however, was as good as I thought it'd be. A-Team, Expendables, and Predator were all wastes of money.

I don't know, perhaps it's because BoE seemed more 'classic' in its solitary guy struggling in a post-apocalyptic wolrd than CoM with its let's run away from everyone and protect the chosen one approach, which is being over-used and makes it too similar to movies like Babylon A. D.
@ r33k: I purposedly didn't include any zombie movies. I'm not a big fan of those, although I do watch them from time to time and sometimes even enjoy it (Shaun of the Dead - did you know they're making a sequel? - and Dawn of the Dead from 2004 are good examples).

Why are korean movies so good recently, just watched The Chaser, damn good thriller. Weird plotline too, not your usual pitch. At least 8/10, great watch
|
just watched THE NOTEBOOK, i thought it was ok
i didn't really understand the extremely low reviews from critics; it actually had like the worst score BY FAR out of my list of movies i was planning on watching (all except notebook were certified fresh league) it did however have a really high RT Community %, and actually was higher than the rest on the list, which is pretty crazy
i thought it was going great until like the last 10%, where a lot of weird shit happens like how the old Allie just blanks out during the dinner and then later, in the hospital she blanks in and remembers him again, that was very strange and killed the movie i think
also the way they unveiled that the old 2 were noah and allie, i think they might have done that better just a lil, but mainly it was the alzheimer's randomly kicking in and kicking out that took a point off
but overall it was ok and definitely so much better than what the critic score passed it for
def go with rt community on this one, as they're largely more dependable for me and casual viewers than the critic reviews (except for The Aviator which was still pretty high on community (i hated that movie) )
edit: and if anyone can recommend some nice post 2000 movies that aren't like 3 hours long (i hated dark knight too) that would be awesome. i don't care about all that classic shit that critics look for in movies and english professors look for in "literature" as long as its entertaining e.g. this movie
