For me, someone who rates his favourite show as The Wire, the pace of this show is intense right from the off. Changing scenes and moving forward in time without warning, changing characters suddenly and plot strings suddenly. There was loads of action and intrigue in the second episode. Right from the question of whether Bran would survive, to the assassination attempt, to that little douchebag Joffre's douchey attack on the ginger boy. I really like the tomboy girl actress, she is awesome :D. Although all that being said I am really put off by the nudity and sex scenes. Why can't they have some class, like the great and classic TV show 'I, Claudius'. There was far more implied sex in that show than there is in Spartacus, it was just that though, IMPLIED. I hate this modern style of showing tits and pounding flesh. If I want porn I'll get porn.
Were we watching the same show, where were these sudden changing characters and plot twists? The moment you see Bran isn't in a coffin you know he's going to survive, so sending assassins doesn't even evoke danger because you know if he was going to die before he could wake up they'd have just had him not survive the fall or they wouldn't have sent an assassin because Bran just simply would wake up. And what could be more stereotypical than the spoiled prince being a brat and picking on the good characters? Seriously who cares about the butcher's boy in the first place? They might as well have just had him wear a red shirt.
Or what about the lack of tension when Ned killed the wolf. It's not like they've shown any real attachment between any of the characters and the wolves. Hell,Ned just a few minutes back was all set to just straight up kill them when he found them and then he looks all sad that he has to put the thing down? great action and intrigue there It's not enough to have assassins and direwolves action is about context.
1. I said changing scenes and moving forward in time without warning. The first episode is full of that, transporting across continents and into locations (the courtyard with the Lannisters talking, or the place across the narrow sea where the blonde ppl were). And the bit where it moves forward in time and the only real indication you get is that the dire wolves are older, that IS a fast move.
2. From everything I've been told by my friends who read George RR Martin, I've been told to expect a cynical and depressing plot. So I wasn't sure if Bran would die or not, I was genuinely wondering about it.
3. It was an effective way of showing what a douchebag Joffrey is without dedicating too much screen time to him. And there are kids who behave like that anyway, I know some, it wasn't unbelievable.
4. For me there was loads of tension when Ned killed the wolf. I felt really upset and emotional about how the stupid ass bitch landed her dire wolf in the shit by not telling the truth. And why should Ned have that much emotion about it? For christ's sake, this guy executes people without batting an eyelid. I think he's probably tough enough to kill a wolf.
Either you should watch the show again, accept that your experience is going to be marred by your having read the books, or learn to appreciate good shows. Next you'll be telling me why can't this show be more like Tru Blood or Spartacus...sigh. I'll still wait to make my mind up on the show, because there have been loads that disappoint, but I am very optimistic about this. Especially because of the quality of lead actors, Sean Bean is a tried and tested master of war-based drama acting as evidenced by his epic character Sharpe.

@fraidnot - I like that. 'The moment you see Bran isn't in a coffin you know he's going to survive, so sending assassins doesn't even evoke danger because you know if he was going to die before he could wake up they'd have just had him not survive the fall or they wouldn't have sent an assassin because Bran just simply would wake up.'
You haven't read the books or you would know how callous Martin is with his characters :D Just one of many factors which make them awesome.
The show is suffering from a lack of screen time and a lot of source material. They're doing a decent job so far of keeping up with events, but I admit I was a little sad to see how little the wolves are in it. I know it's hard to have the kids show their connections to the wolves due to the little screen time they have, but still it must have made it hard to care when Ned had to kill Lady. Still the missus cried, so maybe they did a decent job and I'm just desensitised...
Can't wait for the next few episodes when a couple of armoured characters will be showing up. Also anyone from the UK notice the Hound is the Scots Oats porridge guy? And to everyone else, the 'Yarp' guy in Hot Fuzz?

I just watched the second episode tonight. I loved(/hated/loved) the books, though I'm not a huge huge fan of regular fantasy, in general. I've only read one book of the Wheel of Time, and one from Discworld, so I am not well-versed in fantasy at all, haha. But I ate up the books.
Why did they make the Drogo-Dany wedding night scene _less_ consensual in the show? The people I watched the 2nd episode with were like "why WOULD she want to please him?" and unwilling to accept that their characters were "growing to respect and love each other" haha. All I can say is that there's too much to get into too few hours of screen time, as someone above me said too...
Yay for our first line of subtitled Dothraki spoken by our beautiful khaleesi though. http://www.dothraki.org/ everyone!
I must be exceedingly terrible at talking about things I love. It's a good thing everybody around me already loves Starcraft =( I was so excited to get everyone to watch GoT with me and now everyone around me IRL hates it and derides it as a soap opera. How can I tell them how good it gets? Intricate political schemes? Comeuppance, betrayal, shocking revelations, revenge? Magic? Why don't they believe me when I say something is awesome?
I do enjoy watching Lena Headey, though. And that guy playing Jaime is totally hot enough and douchebaggy enough to be Jaime. It's pretty great.

Robert was like "whatever, sure Lannister woman, have the wolf killed, I'm past caring" and he's USED to having to cave to the demands of his powerful allies, because he's been king for some years already. But Ned is not used to this. Ned is furious that his friend Robert is caving to the demands of Cersei (which have the weight of the powerful Lannister family behind it), sad that their kids are fighting and the adults had to get involved (which would happen with any family. Even if it's your best friend who's kid hurt your own kid, you're gonna stick up for your own kid first and feel shitty about being mad at your best friend)... and it's worse cuz the relationship between the families is unequal. Even though Robert _needs_ Ned as a companion and advisor, Robert is the king. Also, Ned isn't stupid, and he knows his daughters: he can probably tell that Sansa is declining to stick up for Arya because Sansa doesn't want Joffery to think less of her (since she's all naive and starstruck and wants a perfect court life and to marry her prince and shit). But Ned can't just be like "shut up Sansa we can all tell your'e lying, I'm gonna defend my other daughter" because the prince is involved and they could have Ned (an adult) tried for treason if he opens his mouth against Joff. He's probably really disappointed in Sansa (since Ned values honesty so much), but he can't reprimand Sansa right there in front of everybody cuz they'd all lose face.
Most of all, Ned's sad that he's being forced to play their political games (AND only his own family is being hurt for it... nothing "bad" is actually gonna happen to the prince), and he's doing it all in the name of "duty" which Cat is already mad at him about.
Also yeah, you couldn't see with such limited screen time that the direwolves were part of the family (and all important and stuff cuz the direwolf is on the Stark sigil and bla bla bla). So even though he's really sad about the pet, he's probably really sad about what this represents, and dreading what else he'll have to sacrifice. This is a heavy blow for Ned.

Because this show ask for bit more of an attention span then that of an average american. Just consider yourself lucky you got it :D In all seriousness, this show is not for people that like the new Star Trek movie over the old ones or the new Star Wars over the old ones.

I could imagine the intro changes every time a little bit to reflect the main plot-hubs of that episode (on the other hand kings landing then would've had no place in the 2nd episode intro), but yeah, they definately change it at least a little according to the places in that episode.

I highly doubt that people in the middle ages took better care for their teeth than now. With advances in technology such as braces, retainers, X-Rays, and toothpaste.
Unless you are an expert on the subject, which then I must retract that last statement.

Hahhaa hooray =D
Yeah... I don't know whether to blame my friends for not being patient enough, or to blame the show creators for not ramping up the action in line with the sex (which I think there is almost too much of.... weirdly it's a turnoff for people in my immediate circle who expect violent/copious sex to at least come with violent/copious action or at least a "really interesting plot" ... which drives me nuts cuz the plot is ridiculously intricate... it's only that it takes TIME to explain and set up, and TIME to get you attached to the characters)... People in my RL circle are like "dude, is this show just bad stuff happening all the time? Ugh I'm done watching it" after 2 episode and I'm like =*(
Like it's so much to ask for, you know? "MAKE A PERFECT SHOW WITH A PERFECT BLEND THAT WILL KEEP AS MANY PEOPLE WATCHING AS POSSIBLE" ... I'm gonna keep watching it no matter what since I loved the books so much...

That's really neat. Maybe they'll change the intro models as the landscape changes!!!! =OOOO
I love the intro. Some people are saying it looks too CGI, but I don't care. It looks really fantasy to me =) Somebody who knows metalworking, go make a steampunk replica gooo!!! =)

turns out that in the seven kingdoms (and across the narrow sea) dental hygiene is VERY culturally important.

[Irony] Did you noticed the long stream of horses and stuff traveling through the tall grass, and the saddle sores of Danerys. [/Irony] Sorry could not help it.
Doratki are nomadic people, in first episode you saw the town where Iliryo was housing Visery and Dany, on the outskirts of the town took place the wedding and wedding night, after that they traveled far to the east away from Narrow sea and Westeros.

as was stated before the amount of sugar we eat today is vastly different from the amount that was eaten 1000 years ago. Sugar is the cause of the most common problems you can have with your teeth and you dont have to be a doctor to know that.
appart from the smell when you stick to a meat and vegetable diet you probably wouldnt have to take care of your teeth at all.

I think Vaes Dothrak was always a tent city, just one that doesnt move as illustated by the intro... that was my impression anyway. Although it's unusual for a nomadic people to even have a city, it would be stretching it a bit to pretend they also had heaps of engineers and architects.

that might happen. It would be quite interesting to know if there is a link between eating habits in early childhood and the growth of the adult teeth
